This is great news for President McCain.

Aw, shit, John. Don’t make me get all weepy this early in the morning.
sniff.
chrome agnomen
but some people would rather pay 20$ to watch ‘the christmas sweater’; this country is f*cked.

Congrats to the Crimson Tide. They thoroughly whupped the Gators. That was one of the first games I’ve seen where one of Urban Meyers’ teams didn’t seem to be as well prepared as usual. Congrats to UT also. Looks like it will be them and the Tide in the BCS championship game. Gators in the Sugar against Cincinnati. I didn’t think Tebow, McCoy or Ingram had “statement” games, however, I bet the Heisman goes to Ingram now.
I’ll be damned. Edit is back in Firefox.

Wow. That video clip. I’m going’ along grinnin’ and then I have tears rolling down my cheeks. Thanks for the early morning test of my mirror neurons. Whew. That lady packs a punch.
jwb
@smiley: The Heisman certainly shouldn’t be going to either Tebow or McCoy after yesterday’s games.

Consumer tech question:
My 3 yr old laptop is showing age. Been looking around and thinking about buying a 2nd (actually 3rd) laptop. I have been wondering about getting a sub-notebook “surfer” at the $300-$400 range. The higher end of that range usually gets 2 GB ram
Any suggestions or thoughts?
Comrade Darkness
@smiley: And the Texas-Nebraska game, where my only wish was that they would both suck.
smiley
@jwb: McCoy accounted for 160 yards of offense and threw 3 interceptions and no TDs. Ingram accounted for 189 yards and rushed for 3 TDs. Tebow accounted for 310 yards, threw one TD and one interception. Because of who won and lost yesterday, I predict (again) that Ingram will be ‘Bama’s first Heisman winner.
Montysano
@jwb:
McCoy came within exactly 1 second of making a monumental fuckup.
Nick Saban is making a football fan out of me. When the Tide is rolling, they’re a fun team to watch.
jwb
@Montysano: I stand by my prediction that come January UT will stop the Tide.
smiley
@Montysano:
They’ve got to be the favorite in the championship game now. Not that I care anymore.

@Keith G:
My beloved 13″ Macbook is also dying. I’ve been asking the same question. I know Asus is the company that introduced the concept of netbooks, and so they’re the most experienced.
What I’m trying to decide is whether there is any capability I’d be missing, especially regarding video/movies. One thing I’d like to start doing is playing Netflix movies on the TV.
jwb
@smiley: I think the voting on the Heisman is going to be a bit of a mess because at this point I don’t think there is any consensus winner, but I agree that Ingram will most likely end up on top, and I’d be most surprised if either McCoy or Tebow ends up winning.
Montysano
@jwb:
Maybe. I don’t know enough about the game to have an opinion. I’ve always been a basketball and volleyball fan (played volleyball at Purdue).
Just Some Fuckhead
Thanks for bringing up another painful memory, John.

You may be right about that, but that would be an injustice.
Forget about who plays for what team, and ask yourself the question that Heisman voters are supposed to be asking themselves: who is the most outstanding player in college football this year.
There are only two possible answers: Gerhart and Spiller.
Keith G
@Randy P: Yup. There are trade offs.
A friend who knows I am looking just im’ed me:

@Keith G:
I think mine might be on its way out. Or maybe it’s just the battery. Some weeks ago, I took it into the Apple store after it said that the battery needed to be serviced. The guy told me that it would still work but I needed to have it plugged in or the life would be much shorter than normal. That was fine, since I don’t travel with it often, and I didn’t see the point in paying money for a new battery if I planned to buy a new laptop when I hopefully go to law school next fall.
Now the damn thing won’t go on, and I hope that when I take it to the Apple Store tomorrow, they tell me it’s the battery or something else minor, since I’m going to be pissed if I have to buy a new computer. Unless, of course, I can buy a new one now and then resell it at about the same price as I bought it and then just eat a much smaller amount of money.
As far as you original question, I don’t have any opinions as to the quality of the netbooks, but I’d look around for a deal. I think The New York Times, among others, is offering a netbook for free or for a reduced price if you subscribe to its electronic edition.

ok guys, tell me what you think. i know a glenn beck fan. he brought me this article:
he was laughing and he loves to bash the government, so i guess he was trying to prove that the government and the stimulus are stupid.
here are my thoughts: in a way doesn’t this prove that the stimulus was effective? first off all, in the context of the stimulus, isn’t it stupid to criticize government spending? the point is to get people working, and to keep the economy on the whole afloat. and what better “shovel ready” job is there than something like this?
also, isn’t it somewhat ironic that the people who criticize the stimulus the most are the ones are helped the most by it. after all, it did keep the gdp and wall st. going, and that is great for people who have millions of dollars to invest or play with. people like glenn beck.
glenn beck was bashing the stimulus the other night, and he said that the economy was shot and the only thing that was propping it up was the stimulus. then he showed a chart which showed how much of the spending was back-loaded and the tax cuts were front-loaded. he was trying to show how the stimulus was mostly set up to help barack obama get reelected. but actually wasn’t he offering a counter-argument to his own argument? isn’t he saying that the stimulus worked, and it’s only going to become more effective as more money comes online?

Wow, did BS say something that I might actually agree with? I must admit that the second I saw him on my screen I switched channels for a few minutes. My dislike for him is acute. So now I understand that maybe I should be willing to expose myself to other POVs.
Got it. Lesson learned.
So what did he say?

I am a happy owner of a Toshiba NB 205.
My caution to anyone thinking of buying a netbook: spend as much time as you can typing on it before you buy. All netbook keyboards are compromises, but different models compromise in different ways, and you should make sure you can live with those compromises.
SiubhanDuinne
Okay, this has really gone beyond parody now. I was just scrolling around the channels for a minute, and damned if President McCain isn’t on MTP. Again. For the umptieth time this year.
Why the hell doesn’t NBC just name him co-host and be done with it? I can’t even mock this any more.
Napoleon
@MBSS:
Well 10 seconds by me with Google found that it is the worlds largest enviornmental clean up project so I am going to go out on a limb and guess it involves way more then just rabbit poop.
valdivia
@SiubhanDuinne: well isn’t he President of the Village? And they are the only ones who count no?
Napoleon
@SiubhanDuinne:
I saw an ad for that last evening on TV and they pimped it as an “exclusive” interview (seriously).
Noonan
Gates just said on MTP that more troops have to die now so less troops have to die in the future. Interesting.
Dork
@gnomedad: Apparently not here.
Elizabelle
You know, valdivia, that’s a good point.
John McCain, President of the Village.
MBSS
@Napoleon:
but, in a way, isn’t all that beside the point in the context of the stimulus? the government could have hired mystics to count the pixies in my garden, and as long as someone had a job and money was flowing, then the objective was fulfilled. it seems to me the priorities were speed and jobs, and this fulfilled those objectives. so even if this was “wasteful governmental spending,” isn’t it a still a bit of a moot point?
valdivia
@MBSS:
well if aside from counting the pixies in your garden those pixies were also generating other jobs, the multiplier effect, then yes, you are absolutely right.
gnomedad
@MBSS:
Um, this all sounds ingenious and worthwhile. Does Beck think he pwded them because he gets to say “radioactive rabbit poop”?
valdivia
@Elizabelle: I think the Village will never forgive Obama that he denied *their* President the presidency of the rest of the country.
MBSS
@gnomedad:
actually, that article was from roland sweet, who does a odds and ends type weekly article in my local free liberal rag.
i was mixing in some other thoughts about beck. but, no doubt that dipshit will pick on this story and rail about it.
JD Rhoades
@valdivia:
And if those pixies were radioactive, you damn well better count them and get the little bastards out of my damn garden.
Haw haw haw! Glenn Beck said ‘poop”. Also.

Toby cat finally shows some prowess.
Edit to add: Mrs J sez prowess my ass, his sister Bea caught it and he stole it from her.

@MBSS:
Yeah, but 98.5% (also know as the vast majority of those that vote) of the general public doesn’t look at it that way so you better have some kind of an argument for why you are not basically coming up with make work.

@jeffreyw: Toby must be so proud!
I can’t watch MTP anymore. It’s just too frustrating. Far from an lively discussion, it’s the same old crap, only rewarmed.

PeakVT
@MBSS: We could hire mystics, but it’s better if the deficit spending be aimed at things that increase future productivity. Cleaning up rabbit poop may sound as silly as hiring mystics to some people, but if the land can be released for other uses then it will (eventually) make us richer (or at least prevent some negative consequences like cancer, deformed children, etc.).
Uloborus
The rabbit poop thing sounds like a perfect example of the stimulus and of right-wing thinking. A little money not only created jobs, and got a useful company through hard times, it made a very necessary job much faster and more efficient. That is exactly what the administration has been trying to do all around.
But the right-wingers literally (and I mean that) do not think. They gut react. Cleaning rabbit poop = worthless waste of money. They don’t bother to research, analyze, or know anything about processes of bio-concentration or the dangers of radioactivity that make me get really, really worried when I hear rabbits are digging this stuff up. They utterly ignore the ‘months to days’ part. Part of a larger problem? Who cares? They don’t get past ‘rabbit poop = funny’ and ‘dems are always wrong and should be mocked/attacked’. They are not thinkers and do not analyze.
This was always a problem and the centerpiece of McCain’s anti-pork arguments. Now, anybody who DID think has been booted for message impurity and made fun of for nuance.

@Noonan: That is basically the logic of war.

this guy has a dad who has MS and a girlfriend whose dad nearly died due to H1N1, or something similar. he still doesn’t understand the importance of health care reform. he bitches about being young and healthy and having to get insurance. but he never mentions the scenario where something major happens to him, and you, i, and the rest of society have to subsidize his million dollar health care bills.

That would be the same Italian criminal justice system that recently convicted a bunch of CIA employees in absentia for kidnapping a Muslim cleric off the streets of Milan and renditioning (is that a word?) him to the Egyptians (who, to no one’s surprise, tortured the guy).
The Italians may play the world’s most boring football, but they’re not all bad.

Missed your response last night..Yeah if you are gonna wear blue in nc…dark blue is the right color. As far as NCSU sports goes I have my own theory. Our athletic program and its leaders have a self loathing that they cannot shake after the Jimmy V controversy. (FSM rest his soul) They do everything they can do to possibly kneecap our programs. From refusing to pay for a tier one coach to having significantly higher academic requirements than NCAA requires. (granted some of that may be a lingering legacy of the ncaa sanctions we were under for awhile) Even if ncsu were a small school with no aspirations for national prominence, (which they’re definitely not) the league that we play in ALONE would get you on national tv week in week out…and that gets top talent. That is….if you dont have a strong masochistic streak.

Aetna - sucks to have met ya
Hey Sarah Palin was right! Death Panels DO EXIST – They’re better known as “Health Insurance Companies.” These are the same malignant trolls who are spending millions to derail health care reform. The only thing more arrogant than announcing you’re raising your prices and probably losing 600,000 customers at the same time you’re saying “There’s nothing wrong with our system” is the amount of money they pay these bozos. Seriously what does one man do to to earn $23 million dollars a year? – defecate gold bricks? No wonder they have to raise their prices, their CEO is probably getting tired of his house in the Hamptons & wants a bigger one.

Forget about health care reform – let’s all get our pitchforks and head down to Aetna’s headquarters :^)

@MBSS:
What strikes me about this discussion is how much we seem to buy in (even unconsciously) to the right’s default framing that government spending is always wasteful, stupid or corrupt in some way.
@As Gnomedad pointed out, the “wacky” helicopter survey for radioactive rabbit scat appears to be an ingenious solution to part of the massive cleanup problem. From your original quote: “Dee Millikin of CH2M Hill Plateau Remediation Co., the company responsible for the cleanup, said the helicopter survey would shorten the cleanup from months to days.” [Emphasis mine]
How do we skip over that–an ingenious, efficient solution to a gnarly problem–and go into a sort of defensive crouch of “Well, even if it’s mystics counting pixies, people have jobs, and that’s the point, really”?
I would tell your Glenn Beck fanboy friend that this appears to be an ingenious solution to the problem, which shows that the stimulus is working on both levels–funding jobs and solving real problems–and that he is a grade-school-level nimrod for thinking that giggling about radioactive rabbit scat somehow makes a valid point. Would he prefer that the company spend much more money to do the survey some other way? Or would he just prefer that we leave all the radioactive shit (real and metaphorical) and not clean up the site?
Seriously, mock this ass-hat and mock him hard.
