Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

White supremacy is terrorism.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

I wonder if trump will be tried as an adult.

Take your GOP plan out of the witness protection program.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

I’m sure you banged some questionable people yourself.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

No one could have predicted…

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

Second rate reporter says what?

He really is that stupid.

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Their freedom requires your slavery.

We still have time to mess this up!

Thank you, Bad Horse’s Filly:

A little bit of comfort food (at least Ravioli is in my house) for what has been a very cold and busy week. I make fresh pasta for special occasions – my spinach lasagna being one of them. I have only made fresh ravioli once, and once was enough. Much like making my own steamed dumplings, effort vs. reward is definitely unbalanced. Especially when with a little bit of experimentation, you can find really good fresh or frozen ravioli at a reasonable price.

On the board tonight:

1) Ravioli w/ Rosemary Basil Cream Sauce
2) Tomato-Zucchini Confetti
3) Tossed Salad
4) Sorbet or Gelato

I had a shitty couple of days, so I am self-medicating with chocolate chip cookie dough that I made. Hopefully my nice organic eggs didn’t come with a free side of salmonella.

@James K. Polk, Esq.: Wasn’t it, though? I missed many of the early episodes, but my best friend Jen called me and basically ordered me to start watching the show. In our 10 years of friendship, I have never known her to be wrong about anything, so decided to give it a try. It’s definitely a fun show — and there is some serious talent on there.

1lb pork loin, cubed (aka 4 boneless pork chops)
    1/4 cup onion, chopped
1/2 cup Herdez salsa verde. you can use other brands, but Herdez is perfect for this
    1/2 cup water

brown the pork. add the onion, saute until soft. add salsa and water, simmer for 30 mins.

    dead-simple chile verde!

@Betsy: Yep. We had a cake auction for a fundraiser, and I just took a plain yellow cake mix, substituted brown butter for the oil, threw in a couple of handfuls of Skor bits into the batter, iced it up all fancy, and the damn thing sold for $140!

Thanks. I really appreciate it. I have no idea where things are going, honestly. I hope they resolve themselves soon, but I don’t expect them too. Just to move out of crisis-mode and back into limbo-mode. At least for a few months. (Not to be too cryptic. It basically involves me and my partner figuring out WTF we’re doing with our lives and how we will be paying rent. You know, no biggie.)

Can anyone explain why Obama is constantly playing King Solomon and butchering every baby that is brought before him out of fear of what Conservatives will say about him? The latest instance is his rude snub of the Peace Prize social event invitations. Granted, Norway is one of those dirty rotten “SOC1ALIST” countries that Obama is deathly afraid of being seen palling around with. And maybe I’m letting my Norwegian heritage cloud my judgement on this matter, but, What The Fuck?: http://www.americablog.com/2009/12/bit-more-about-obama-turning-down-lunch.html

“Obama has also turned down a lunch invitation from the King of Norway.

According to a poll published by the daily tabloid VG, 44% of Norwegians believe it was rude of Obama to cancel his scheduled lunch with King Harald, with only 34% saying they believe it was acceptable.

Especially since King Harald LIVED in the White House during WW II when he was a kid as guests of his god father – FDR.

I’m all for ignoring royalty, but King Harald is a somewhat different case. He still speaks English with a pronounced Tidewater accent, and calls people ‘hon’. He crawled out of his sick bed to accompany his father to President Kennedy’s funeral. Like his father before him, he has never invited a Republican President to the royal palace because they hate Republicans.

Does anybody in this fool administration know anything about anything?”

Nice to know he also gave a “Sarah Palin approved” acceptance speech for the NPP, which essentially was all about justification for “just wars”.

Change we can believe in, indeed.

So I got a friend who’s in China teaching ESL to grade schoolers. Upon hearing about the relevant story, he got his class to yell “GREEN BALLOONS” on camera. Yup, they’re going to be scarred for life.

I also have another friend who totally hates Keyboard Cat and wants to one-up it. End result:

    @FlipYrWhig:

I’m not a stinking PUMA, nor am I an avid reader of Aravosis, who I find to be way too shrill on too many issues.

I voted and phonebanked for Obama. And I know that he’s faced with a shitload of challenges facing the country and for him personally because he’s a Black, Muslim-named Democratic President having to clean up the mess left by his Republican predecessors. He’s also not getting much help from the establishment Dems. But enough of reaching across the aisle to those who will stab you in the back regardless of what you do. If you’re going to take your knocks, at least take them while doing the right thing. And caving to the opinion of Republicans or the media isn’t what I consider the right thing on any issue these days. They don’t deserve the least bit of respect or deference from him. If Obama keeps this up, the Republicans and the media will keep playing him this way, and his term will be a complete waste. He should ignore these assholes and work on the obstructionists on the Democratic side.

And, I’m sorry, but while I know Obama isn’t the second coming of FDR, he could at least show some courtesy to FDR’s godson.

    @Thoughtcrime:

Anything that comes near my cognitive processes by way of Aravosis’s involvement I have learned not to trust.

Here’s the thing. I know I’m not an expert on very many things. What’s killing me about the liberal blogosphere is that it’s getting _overrun_ by people who are _sure_ that they are experts on _very, very many things_. Woulda done this, coulda done that. They’d punish Lieberman, they’d bring home the soldiers from Afghanistan, they’d tell the “banksters” to fuck off and die. All very satisfying. All leading to massive disasters the next morning. Then what?

Clearly it’s damn hard to fix a truly fucked-up health care system or it would have been done by now. I don’t see why everyone is so gleeful about wanting to throw shit around so that they can attempt to prove that they’re the smartest, toughest, and somehow at the same time the saddest and most emo people in the virtual room. Enough already. Their disappointment doesn’t do shit for me, for us, or for the country.

Bully for you. And somewhere along your voyage of self-awareness you come up with…

Just out of curiosity, who the fuck did you think you were voting for? Did you not get that community organizers listen to every voice at the table no matter how insane or inane? Did it not occur to you that just MAYBE Obama would have his administration like that?

If Obama keeps this up, the Republicans and the media will keep playing him this way, and his term will be a complete waste. He should ignore these assholes and work on the obstructionists on the Democratic side.

And what, pray tell, makes you think he is not doing exactly that? Because you don’t have your magic unicorn now? Do you have the first FUCKING clue how our government works? We are from our very design incrementalist. Bush only got around a lot of that because he was a proponent of the unitary executive and had a pliant Congress willing to go along with him. Nothing in what I’m saying excuses the Democrats for how they’ve been acting on a lot of issues, but Buddha on a bicycle get a clue about how change happens in this country before you write off Obama as a failure barely one year in. Sheesh.

One of the many things I enjoy about BJ is the give and take exchange of ideas and opinion. But when I read this kind pissing match between progressives and radicals on the left, I’m left with the image of some wingnut in a basement somewhere reading this thread and popping wood and laughing up his sleeve, as visions of a GOP return to power in 2012 dance in his head.

On a lighter note, I picked up a small rotisserie chicken and brought it home and de-boned it and made a casserole with frozen stir-fry vegetables, CofC soup, and sour cream. Used black pepper laced potato chips and cheddar for the topping. Took about an hour and a half from start to finish and it came out great. Ate also half of it by myself. Left-over casserole is one of my favorites right behind left-over meat loaf.
