Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

Infrastructure week. at last.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

If you are still in the GOP, you are an extremist.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

This blog will pay for itself.

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

If you tweet it in all caps, that makes it true!

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

After roe, women are no longer free.

Morning, y’all. Cold and frosty here in north Atlanta, so I think I’ll just be lazy until the sun emerges and melts the rime on my car windows.

Mild here in South Carolina, but forecast for colder again tomorrow. Fixing to head to Charleston for an overnighter, with South Carolina Stingrays hockey thrown into the mix.

Cool and cloudy here. Tired as hell — methinks SamKitten is cutting a tooth, and he was up at 2:30 last night, which is unheard-of for him. And of course, I had only gone to bed at 12:30, because he normally gets up at 7, allowing me a good 6 hours or so of uninterrupted sleep.

BTW, I think that this last Sunday of the year is traditionally the day that CBS Sunday Morning always does their annual roundup of people who have died during 2009. Not just the celebrities that everyone knows about (although them too), but lots and lots of people you never heard of who made a difference. Always worth watching IMO.

Cool and wet this morning on the south Oregon coast, currently about 50 degrees out. IOW, the usual…

My personal odometer hits the half-century mark at 7:32 am, hopefully I make it. ;)

Plans for the day include cranking up the guitar and amp for some fun later today, powdercoat the few remaining items for the car, work with the son on his PC (new game installations) and clean up the garage before starting to bolt everything back onto the car. The wife is up to something but I guess I have to wait to find out.

That’s ok with me though, I learned long ago that she is worth waiting for. ;)

Cold and gonna snow here in the ‘Burgh. Getting ready to go to my sister’s for the family Christmas/Stillers celebration. My car is having some sort of electrical problem and I am pissed. Oh well. Anyway, Mr. Cole, I have a passionate defense of the great Franco Harris in the last thread that is in moderation. You, sir, are not well informed about the general of the Italian Army and should be ashamed of yourself as a self-described Stillers fan. Calling Franco names like that. Pshaw. Real Stiller fans would never say something like that. He may not be Sweetness but he is no wimp.

It’s a nice and cool 42 degrees outside here in LA. Inside, with one machine running, it’s a balmy 62. Good times.

You know, the funniest thing occurred to me while I was working. With the appearance of the pantsbomber originating from Yemen, doesn’t this shoot the whole Afghanistan buildup in the ass? With AQ coming from multiple places (including Africa where I remember one US raid earlier this year, but can’t remember where) what’s the point of the Afghan surge again?

Oh yeah, I think most of the wingnut pols — and for that matter the MSM — are bitterly disappointed that it didn’t end in a fiery explosion over a heartland city. Part of is is political (they are desperate for a terror attack to happen on Obama’s watch) but I think a lot of it is just that they get big hard-ons (hards-on?) at the very thought of disaster, inferno, loud noises, and terrified people running in every direction at once. Deplorable but quite human (I’m not meaning to make excuses for them, by the way, just trying to understand the motivation).

I get why the media is tantalized by violence and shocking stories of ‘terror’. But it is not hard to see King and his ilk are trying to blame Obama for something that could have happened but did not. What matters is that it did not, and yet they still want to play it as if it had.

One of the contradictions of the Republicans and neocons is that they think of themselves as hard asses on terror issues. People all over the world who have experience constant terrorism in their daily lives deal with it by moving on instead of screaming. They go to work, are vigilant etc. No one goes on and on about the tragedy that could have been only the dimwitted cowards of the republican party.

Happy Birthday, DougL! And welcome to the upside of 50 :)

RedKitten: The only trick I know about helping babies who’re teething is to wet a bunch of washcloths and freeze ’em, and then hand ’em to the kid, replacing each melted chewed cloth with a fresh one from the freezer. It’s not just the cold that helps the teething, but the texture, too. Good luck to both of you!

It’s a nice slow morning here in Seattle. Yesterday was amazingly beautiful: v. cold but oh so sunny and bright. So far today seems to be a repeat, with the sun outlining mountains and lakes and skyscrapers in gold. The kind of day that reminds me all over again that the Pacific NW is the most gorgeous place on Earth (OK, outside of New Zealand South Island :) and how fortunate I am to live here. One of the best teethers I’ve ever seen, though, is the Razbaby. It was the only pacifier my older son would ever take. It’s got great textures, is easy to clean, and comes out of the freezer with a nice chill that doesn’t border on the frostbite side. (I don’t think it was specifically designed to be in the freezer, though.) The bumpiness actually helped some of my son’s teeth to push through. Plus, it looks really cute.
