Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

The words do not have to be perfect.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

We still have time to mess this up!

Good lord, these people are nuts.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

This really is a full service blog.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Battle won, war still ongoing.

Do not shrug your shoulders and accept the normalization of untruths.

Impressively dumb. Congratulations.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

I can’t believe some people don’t want to pay for this kind of crack (fueled? it would be irresponsible not to speculate) analysis at NPR. I just listened to a report on how under the British National Health system, doctors make mistakes, and people die! I turned it off when David “Axis of Evil” Frum was about to offer his thoughts on terrorism.

Other than the earmark business, I thought to myself “Yes because the one demographic that’s so difficult for Obama is the youth and black vote.”

My god, why do these people continue to draw a paycheck?

‘WTF’ doen’t really describe the level of weirdness. I feel like I’ve seen an alien consciousness emerge from an alternate space-time continuum.

Yes, I think it would help Obama if he told young African American voters that their tax money is being spent on welfare queen farmers, old bucks that eat t bone steak while getting millions from the government. And then he should set up some death panels.

I thought the key to attracting African-American votes was to push for a cut in the capitail gains tax?

thinking of the object of our kudos below, this really seems a case for TNC’s superpowers to deal with.

I mean, I, a middle aged, middle class, mostly secular Jew have my views on this matter, but I gotta say that my analysis does not go any further than the twitterer above. For someone who presumably lives in one of the more African-American of American cities, Mara sure does seem to lead a rather hermetically sealed existence, by the evidence of this quote.

    In other words: WTF!?

Whatever it is that Mara is drinking causes diarrhea of the brain, nothing more or nothing less. Any drug that causes this level of stupidity without accompanying feelings of euphoria is something that should be avoided at all costs.

Why of course young African Americans want the budget to be balanced on their backs and the backs of their SS collecting grandparents while tax hikes for the wealthy to help pay it down are simply off the table.

After all, we wouldn’t want to damage the entrepreneurial spirit of our betters by actually taxing them, would we?

Otherwise we’ll turn into Soshulist France, where they don’t even have a word for entrepreneur. :)

First of all, a hearty FYWP.

Yeah, Obama really struggled to close the deal with young people/African-Americans in the last elections. And it’s only natural that young black people would be most concerned about pork at a time of high unemployment.

The WTF dial’s been cranked up to 11 and ripped off. There are conspiracy theories less headache inducing, less weird and which make more sense than this.

Sorry to tweet so rarely. We’re getting ready to shoot an awesome new music video for our new band, “Wolverines!”…

Extra bonus photo of Mr Molotov fondling a Kalashnikov assault rifle, apparently on his wedding anniversary. I kid you not.

For god’s sake…. well, at least Obama’s lock on the youth vote will make it stop some day. He has already got the Clinton voters, and anti-Bush voters (people like John). With his own newly enfranchised voters there is a 24 year-window of people that will vote against this kind of “policy” (Earmark reform solves the deficit problem! Tort reform solves all health-care issues!) And the Republican strategy to pit the old against the youth during the health-care debate will work brilliantly in the long term.

Holy shit. I can’t stop laughing at this. Earmark reform?? For real? And people wonder why I’m such a meanie for stopping my contribution to NPR. Now all I have to do is show them this and ask them why I should underwrite what is obviously a rather advanced case of massive drug taking on the part of the hired help there. I mean, aren’t we at war with drugs? Come to think of it, Obama never talks about the War on Drugs. I think the youth vote could possibly be attracted to a tough law and order message about that, too. Earmarks and War on Drugs! The kids love that shit!

Jesus. Did you know that even if we outlawed earmarks it would have absolutely no effect on government spending?

In United States politics an earmark is a legislative (especially congressional) provision that directs approved funds to be spent on specific projects or that directs specific exemptions from taxes or mandated fees. Earmarks do not create new government spending, but allocate existing spending for specific purposes.

This may be the stupidest political debate of the last few years.

Mara Liasson is a stupid bitch.

My least sort of person are these stupid turd Villagers to whom everything is just some cosmic dance. To them, the differences between Republican Party and Democratic Party doesn’t affect real lives. It just moves pawns on their big board. Bills pass, armies go to war, welfare is cut, infrastructure repair isn’t funded, etc. but it’s all just some gentlemen game played as they sniff port in their parlors.

When I went to school in Hollis, Queens-right down the block from the homes of the great rappers Run DMC, me and the gang used to hang around the school yard and rap about how much we wanted earmark reform. More & better school lunch programs, some health care, hell-some shoes-those were ok, but earmark reform really spoke to us round the way girls. Holla, yo!

This is crazy because when I was at my family reunion a few months ago (that was full of black people, which makes sense, seeing as how I am black and all), I was hanging out with my cousins (also black) and all they could talk about was earmark reform!

My one cousin was like “This gross extortion of federal largesse needs to end, dawg!” And I was like “Whoa, Jerome. Enough with the earmark reform! Do you want to eat some chicken or buy some spinning rims?” And he was like “These muthafuckas (ed. note: The As are because he is black. Duh.) be wastin’ all dis money on “overhead projectors,” B. THIS SHIT IS MADNESS, SON!”

Clearly, this woman not only has her finger on the pulse of the black community, she mush be gripping the pulse of the black community with white-knuckled enthusiasm. This woman knows black people, you guys. We should listen to her. Are you listening to her, President Black Guy?!

It kills me that my husband keeps donating to NPR. She’s just a Republican shill. She cannot possibly think this is true; she’s just putting out there. No one cares about earmarks except teabaggers and Republicans who are told they care. Most people probably don’t really know what they are.

I really cannot understand the outrage. Doesn’t congress have the power of the purse? They can fund/or not fund as they see fit.

The feds waste money. How about paying $22,000 for a toilet or putting up a guardrail around a dry lake? http://www.stimuluscigars.com/whatsburning

This colossal waste of the people’s money has got to stop. We must start at the top…Mr. “I won’t allow any earmarks” Obama and clean house.
