sweet, I’ll bring my Avatar responses up here.
lol, i do prattle on….sometimes on Sully’s frontpage.
;)
1) Avatar is already the 4th highest grossing film of all time.
2) Sequel in the works.
3) I meant…umm…Star Wars has influenced culture for 30 years. One way it influenced culture was in defining what kind of movies hollywood made. Star Wars made hightech space warfighting cool. That made console games, tv shows, action figures, cartoons, books.
Hollywood is verr sensitive to cost-viability. Extreme tech costs extreme bucks. But Avatar has ALREADY made a nice profit.
That is good for technodroids like me.
Ringworld, Snowcrash, Broken Angels, Diamond Age, Altered Carbon, Heretics of Dune…..just a few movies I’d relly like to see.
Avatar is the knee in the curve of full immersion film technology.
IMAX and 3D today, stimsuits and holodecks in the future.
Now consider.
The 13 year old that is watching Avatar today (PG-13) will be buying the dvd, playin the console game, watching Avatar II in 2012 and Avatar III in 2014.
In 2016 our 13yr old will be a 19 yr old first time voter. Who will he/she vote for?
Will Avatar make environmentalism and pacifism cool? Will it make genetic engineering cool? Will it make it make kids anti-military?
Will kids be playing with sentient trees and flying dragons and dire horses instead of X-wing fighters and death-stars? Will they be watching Avatar cartoons instead of Star Wars and GI Joe?
I dunno.

@matoko_chan: Listen, no one is saying you can’t like the movie. No one is saying it isn’t a *good* movie, or that it will not make major bank. It may end up changing how movies are made. It may change a lot of things about how entertainment projects are greenlit (lighted?), and all that jazz.
Not making an argument about any of that.
But the utterly ridiculous suggestion that such an ambiguously delivered message is going to shift the ethos of a generation of younger pre-voters – that’s just damned silly.
You like to go around citing all kinds of numbers (most of which mean nothing to the eligible voter pool), so I’ll ask you – you do know what the single most persuasive factor is for how you’ll vote, don’t you?

This is exactly what I thought about too after leaving the movie – the movie was shameless in its good v. evil plotline, but what little kid watching that movie wouldn’t want to be communing with the cool animals around them among pastoral surroundings? I think sensuality will beat out violence every single time, especially in 3D. The battles were cool to watch, but it was the beauty that actually brought me to tears. This reminds me. I’ve been having an ongoing argument regarding hobos with a guy I work with.
My contention is that hobos only have two names – Hobo Joe, Hobo Willy, etc.
He contends that he’s going to go Hobo and break the mold – by insisting on a surname – Hobo Joe Johnson for example.
I contend that a hobo is too poor to hold a surname and that by convention they must only have the transitory first name to go along with Hobo.

@Cat Lady:
Agree completely. The beauty.
My theory is that we humans have our senses — esp vision, mapped to our emotions in a big way and that movie, like the little tendrils at the end of the navi braids, wrapped us visually into a beautiful visual and emotional place. For some, the discussion around plot, etc is where they go. Maybe they just don’t have that stimulus center in the vision cortex. For me, however, I was wrapped in, waking up in Pandora looking at the little jelly fish like light creatures on the end of my finger — almost. And the wonder of it…
One of my favorite little pieces was when she led the guy to her horse like creature and you could see its flesh heaving in excersion and hear almost feel its breath . I love horses and I immediately loved that evocation of that feeling around a horse’s head and neck.. strong and yet wonderfully sensitive, alive. Of that connection to a being of power and beauty…
Sorry — Star Wars was not even close to this…

Modern stuff or the oldies? You mentioned Fear of a…, so it sounds like you need the whole magilla, not just recent stuff.
If you’re going back into the early/mid 90s, you can’t go wrong with Ice-T. Original Gangster really is a classic. I’m also a fan of Supreme NTM (often just NTM). The one to know is Paris sous les bombes. While on the francophone side, Diam’s is more recent. Dans ma bulle is the only one of hers I have, but she had an album last year that was well received.
Back with the classics, Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy were awesome, and they lead you into Michael Franti. Everything he touches is great. Possibly on the easier end to appreciate if you aren’t immersed in the culture too. SO yeah, check out spearhead too.
Also easy to handle and classic, PM Dawn.

Yes. All that.
But I dont think that you have to disparage yourself about being “a 13 year old”. You are 13. 130 and 1300. No apologies — it was enjoyment and entertainment and something very neat — wonder…what is it like to fly, to see and feel yourself on the back on a winged dragon soaring —
Not too much more complex than that. Does it have to be? Does it have to provide an apologia for all bad things done by whites, males, Americans on this earth, not a made up Pandora? This of course does not invalidate or make false any of those issues…but just why must everything have to cover every grievance with a self conscious, regretful storylines — to ask permission to BE because it is animated and I am sure someone must have worked at Disney among the people who undertook this project.
We are liberals. That to me used to mean, no blame — be who you are, see and know what you know and believe. We support what you see, what you enjoy and creativity and openness – the arts — whether simple or complex. Instead, all this permission seeking seems necessary…to be permitted to enjoy something without endless recrimination and extrapolation from an animated planet to this one…
I have never experienced the sense of wildness like that in an animated or created visual reality. I enjoyed riding, flying and sensing it all.

I wonder how many of us know about a small program that King George the Idiot signed? It’s called the Terrorism Risk Insurance Act. It covers every business that is insured. Sounds pretty good no? It was enacted in Nov 2002, due to expire in 05, extended to 07, extended again to 2014. This year is the first year I have seen the standard form which gives me the cost of coverage. My business policy is around $2500 per year, not including workers comp. The cost of coverage is $7 per year. That means the insurance company has determined that if there is a fire I will be totally covered for $2500. An act of terrorism which does the same amount of damage costs $7. From that info I’ll bet pretty good money the chances of my business getting any terrorist damage is so close to zero as to be non existent.
Thanks for reading along so far. A big deal to me is that for a non existent risk I have to pay the insurance company not to cover me. The amount is minuscule, actually only a buck, that’s $1, but now I have to pay for coverage I don’t want, don’t need and is for most businesses utter lunacy.
But this leads me to the following – WTF is wrong with this country that we are so afraid of the world that every business needs to even be asked if they want terrorist coverage? What sort of international publicity could a person get from terrorizing a very, very small business basically in the middle of nowhere? If I had hair would it help cushion the blows from constantly smashing my head against the wall?

@Elie: That’s fine. You liked the movie–there is no need to apologize for that. But to flip that, why must I apologize or feel bad because I don’t want to see the movie because it smacks of white man saves noble savage to me? One reason I don’t like movies in general is because I find them to be too removed from reality. For me, part of the enjoyment I get from a movie IS the plot or how much I can relate to it or the characters. Why should I have to feel bad about that or defend that?

@J. Michael Neal:
As a dj with his own hip-hop radio show I will give you a list with a few notes:
1. Run D.M.C._Run D.M.C.- Early hip-hop at its best. Simple but effective rhymes. Rick Rubin on the beat.
2. Beastie Boys – Licensed to Ill (that’s i.l.l.) – see above, only with a Hebrew twist
3. Eric B. and Rakim – Paid in Full – Rakim Moved the game on from simplistic party rhymes. Key because it introduced 5 percenter Islam to the hip-hop world outside New York
4. Big Daddy Kane – Long Live the Kane – Another game changer. Kane, like Rakim was operating on a higher level than any of his predecessors with the bonus of some of producer Marley Marl’s best work
5. A Tribe Called Quest – Midnight Marauders – The two previous tribe albums are also great, but this solidified the formula: Solid rhymes, and gorgeous jazz infused beats.
6. The Main Source – Breakin’ Atoms – Extraordinary in its workmanlike approach to hip-hop. Makes the list because it includes the debut of then future rap heavyweight Nas on “Live at the Barbeque”
7. N.W.A. “Straight Outta Compton” and Dr. Dre the “The Chronic” – everything you need to know about gangsta rap, the ‘hood in LA circa 1991 and Dr. Dre’s skills in two albums. Plus a young, angry, pre-film career Ice Cube is always a good thing.
8. Nas – Illmatic – This album is to hip-hop what “Kind of Blue” is to jazz, except without the fawning. Offers a surprisingly insightful glimpse into life in NYC and more explicity the worlds largest housing project; Queensbridge Houses, during the crack era.
9. Mobb Deep – the Infamous – See the Illmatic above, only with darker production and even grittier tales. Cameos by
10. Wu-Tang Clan – Enter the 36 Chambers – Started a whole new era of dexterous rhyme skills mixed with a hybrid of kung fu lore and knocking beats. The RZA at his best.
11. Slum Village – Fantastic Volume 2 – The Detroit underground breaks through with this gem. Worth acquiring for Jay Dilla’s (R.I.P.) amazing production. Apart from cameos from Busta Rhymes and Q-tip, the rhymes are forgettable but the beats will stay with you for a while.
12. De La Soul – Buhloone Mindstate – There whole early catalog is worth, especially the hippy, dippy “3 feet high and rising” but this is the album where their thoughtful, non-gangsta rhymes melded perfectly with sublime production.
13. Public Enemy – It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back – Chuck D and a more sane Flavor Flav make black nationalism….palatable. Production by the Bomb Squad is so far outside the hip-hop vernacular that you often wondered if these guys should have been making rock records instead. It’s a good thing. “Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos” remains a classic song.
14. Notorius B.I.G. – Ready to Die – Cinematic, dark, beautiful and funky, this album was perfect in every regard. Biggie more than holds his own with top drawer production by Easy Mo Bee, DJ Premier and other heavyweights.
15. Gang Starr – A Daily Operation – Speaking of DJ Premier, don’t let the name fool you, Gang Starr weren’t thugs. They were the ’90s best hip-hop group. Premier’s jazz and soul infused beats and mc Guru’s lamentations on the state of the black community, hip-hop and the world never get old.
The above are a list of classic albums for anyone wading into the world of hip-hop.

Except to those of very little imagination, and/or those who are more interested in a “trophy” than an actual sexual partner.

Art (music, literature, painting, whatever) about violence isn’t necessarily a turn-off. It depends upon how it’s done. It’s more that I know too much about the real life background in Biggie’s case not to let that distract me from the art. That seems like a silly way to develop an appreciation for hip-hop. I’d rather be able to let the albums tell themselves to me.
Keep in mind that I think the five most evil words in the English language are, “Based on a true story.” I realize that a lot of people think that the fact that a lot of hip-hop is based upon the artists’ personal experience makes it stronger, but it doesn’t work that way for me. The art needs to be able to stand on its own, and that’s how I like to approach it. If it interests me, I will often go out and learn the background afterwards, but that’s not the first step.

@Comrade Luke:
I hope Suh ends his career in their rookie season. Play from your fucking heart.
James K Polk, Esq.
And Texas scores… This isn’t over?
Recovered onsides kick too!
Comrade Luke
@freelancer (itouch):
I had a feeling that when he did went in the locker room and there was no official word for a long time, that they might be talking about whether to go back in.
I just hoped it wasn’t the case.
Corner Stone
Time to make the donuts!
Comrade Luke
Thank god. Now Alabama will have to actually run plays.
The Dangerman
@James K Polk, Esq.:
If Texas wins, Saban should be fired before they get off the field.
Corner Stone
Oh, now that’s just ballsy considering the Bama running game.
Sentient Puddle
Alright, for the WoW-heads, how about we try to meet up tomorrow at (let’s say) 8 p.m. EST to get this guild going?
Again, Eitirgg server horde side. My name is Mazog. Send me a whisper then. I’m also on for at least a little while longer tonight if you want to get it out of the way now.
J. Michael Neal
@James K Polk, Esq.: And recovers another kickoff.
Corner Stone
Catch a freakin pass.
Ash
The fuck is with the refs!? Two blown pass interference calls in the exact same place? Really now?
James K Polk, Esq.
Never stop watching the National Championship game… this one has a crazy feel to it.
freelancer (itouch)
Srsly? I start watching Up in the Air and this game has legs? Fuck me.
And Corner Stone, find yer Jiminy Crickett and quit going scorched-earth on everybody.
ajr22
@J. Michael Neal: I understand. I would just like to recommend Nas’s Illmatic again. It is probably considered the best hip hop album of all time. Its really a brilliant album. Nas is one of the greatest writers/poets to ever pic up a microphone.
Notorious P.A.T.
@freelancer (itouch):
How many of the people in John C’s “following” list are posters here? sarahelabance or Cody_K are you here?
Corner Stone
@freelancer (itouch): Don’t remember asking you touchie.
Notorious P.A.T.
@Sentient Puddle:
I will try to be there.
freelancer (itouch)
Okay, how much fucking crap is Christine fucking eating that she LOSES weight on Taco Bell’s diet menu?
Gawd Bless America.
flukebucket
@Corner Stone:
No shit. Hard to believe he has never lost a game he has started in high school or college. Tells me that he has been surrounded by some damn good football players.
As far as the game is concerned it would be just as exciting if both teams just took a knee three times and punted on every possession.
What a fuckin’ snoozer.
James K Polk, Esq.
@freelancer (itouch): If you eat 1250 calories a day (the fine print), you are nearly guaranteed to lose weight.
Corner Stone
Now that was just a really horrible call. 12 yards away from that guy. Bad pass and worse ref call.
J. Michael Neal
@ajr22:
That was actually a part of my order. I just failed to list it here. Consider your job done.
freelancer (itouch)
@Corner Stone:
Just some friendly advice that you’re welcome to ignore.
gwangung
Who are paying off the refs? Because that was a horrible personal foul call.
Corner Stone
@ajr22:
-Eminem.
Hard to argue.
J. Michael Neal
Fuck me. The Red Wings finally get Cleary and Zetterberg back, and now Holmstrom is going to miss 3-4 weeks with a broken foot suffered in practice. We don’t need another forward; we need Dr. House.
Corner Stone
@freelancer (itouch): You obviously do not subscribe to my newsletter.
It’s just not me, but thanks.
James K Polk, Esq.
52 yarder? WTF? Why would you do that?
Corner Stone
@freelancer (itouch):
But it’s from the Fresco Menu!
freelancer (itouch)
@gwangung:
It’s all about the benjamins aka ratings, and maintaining the legitimacy of the status quo. UT almost didn’t make this game because the last play of the Big 12 Championship was revised on an official review.
ETA- It was just like how the Bush WH planned 9/11!
Comrade Luke
Alabama has been without their Heisman-Trophy-winning running back all half.
Amazing that Ingram AND McCoy aren’t playing.
Corner Stone
Musberger going all Zen on us…
ajr22
@Corner Stone: Unless he was on 8 Xanax bars, but ya that is a good list.
Siddhartha
What’s the name of the guild? I’ve got a 80 undead warlock and haven’t played for a while as my old guild disbanded.
Corner Stone
Shipley’s doing his best Wes Welker routine.
FU Herbstreit! I got there first!
Ash
Well…….holy shit.
James K Polk, Esq.
Man, the new Texas QB looks really, really good.
Corner Stone
We’ve got a ballgame!
Come on D!!
The Dangerman
Saban’s working on his resume.
Ash
@James K Polk, Esq.: Has anyone checked to make sure it’s the same kid that went into the locker room at half time? I’d be suspicious.
J. Michael Neal
Holy moly, it’s a 3-pt game.
Notorious P.A.T.
Yeehaaw!
ajr22
Wow I come back from the Daily Show, and we have ourselves a ball game. Pretty impressive that Texas can compete for a national championship with a freshman at qb. Iowa couldn’t even beat Northwestern when our qb got hurt, and we had to play his freshman back up.
James K Polk, Esq.
Can you fair catch a kickoff?
The Dangerman
@James K Polk, Esq.:
sure
J. Michael Neal
@ajr22:
Wow. A Minnesotan getting hip-hop tips from an Iowan. You don’t see that every day. Somehow, Straight Outta Mankato doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.
Corner Stone
God in motherfucking Heaven! The fucking Bama QB isn’t throwing shit unless the ref’s are letting him! Stack it to stop the fucking run!
Corner Stone
No flags this time you weasel beeschays!
The Dangerman
odd timeout
Morbo
Wow, I watched the Daily Show and a football game broke out. What the hell is Texas doing calling timeout there though?
PTirebiter
That shovel pass/ pick six at the half is looming large.
ajr22
@J. Michael Neal: I’m from Chicago. Went to University of Iowa undergrad. I got street cred don’t worry haha.
James K Polk, Esq.
And that would be game.
Mark S.
Oh fuck.
Think any AP writers will vote Boise St. #1? I bet a couple of them do.
ajr22
They needed to molest that blitzing linebacker.
Comrade Luke
Really happy for the Texas QB. No matter what happens now there’s no way he’s at fault.
Mack Brown on the other hand…wow…
Comrade Luke
BTW, Vegas is shitting themselves right now :)
Morbo
@James K Polk, Esq.: The announcers gave Texas the kiss of death discussing how few sacks they had allowed. Next play: BAM!
Notorious P.A.T.
This sucks.
The Dangerman
what was line?
Mark S.
Mel Gibson is crazy! Don’t mess with me sugar tits!
Comrade Luke
@The Dangerman:
I thought it was 5
Corner Stone
Give me a break.
Comrade Luke
I used to think it was a little awkward when announcers would talk about college kid’s children. Now we’re talking about their incarcerated parents.
Notorious P.A.T.
Screw you, Saban! If I ever see you, I’ll smack you!
James K Polk, Esq.
Colt McCoy showed great heart tonight.
He hearts the NFL.
Comrade Luke
@James K Polk, Esq.:
If he admits he probably could have played, Texas will go insane.
Wait…
You Don't Say
Saban looked pissed.
J. Michael Neal
Eh. The Gopher hockey team would kick the ass of whoever either of these schools could put on the ice.
Mike Kay
We’re all Texas Longhorns, now.
Mike Kay
Texas losing the ball with 3 minutes left to play is like 9/11
freelancer (itouch)
Jebus, I put on my hoth gear and head out for smokes, and the game gets real.
And for fucks sake, when are we going to get to the point where an atheist player is like, “Jesus is a great moral role model, but fuck God! Seriously, we won this game out of sheer human talent and effort with the impeccable support of our coaches and leaders!”?
Ash
@Mike Kay: LMFAO.
Something about the last 3 or 4 minutes of that game just felt wrong.
J. Michael Neal
@freelancer (itouch): Jesus, you are a wuss. It’s Minnesota in January. Tonight barely qualifies as chilly. It sure as hell isn’t cold.
James K Polk, Esq.
Wow, that post game interview with Colt was heavy.
flukebucket
Mercifully over.
At least McCoy didn’t cry.
Ash
Why the hell are they talking about that guy’s father being in jail? Dude got busted for money laundering.

Lol, good sir, SADs has made you mentally ill. Seek help. Tomorrow, it will be so cold that the gaseous elements in the air will precipitate. It. Might. Rain. Liquid. Nitrogen.
I agreed to be born on Earth, not Saturn’s moon Titan.
Seek a professional, my friend.

@Corner Stone:
And you mock someone for hugging their inner 13 year-old?
I got nothing.
J. Michael Neal
@freelancer (itouch): Look, just because I’m mentally ill doesn’t mean that you aren’t exaggerating. It’s five degrees *above* zero. I might switch from the fleece pullover to the leather jacket. Tomorrow night, when it’s supposed to get to -16, maybe I go with the sheepskin, but there’s no need to go to the extreme of wearing a hat or anything.
There’s a place for people like you. It’s called Los Angeles.

@J. Michael Neal:
I assume you’re referring to Arizona Bay? I’d just assume wipe my ass with it.
But look into KiD CuDi, you won’t regret it.
J. Michael Neal
@freelancer (itouch):
Well, that is the proper attitude to California. That’s why a bit of cold weather every year is a good thing. It keeps THOSE people from moving here.
freelancer (itouch)
@J. Michael Neal:
Well, I’d apply that strictly to LA, as the Mythbusters, C. D. Payne, and my closest true friend hail from central and northern CA. Geography is one thing, the magnetism of shit and false sincerity and imitation of true living is another.
moe99
Well that did it. Every single team I supported in a bowl game this year lost. Haven’t been that good at predicting evah.
Then veering to another topic, here’s the best review of Avatar that i have seen yet:

Welcome to the guild John!

@Anne Laurie:
I bet it’s a nice little pot of free money for the insurance companies, though. Remember the outrage, OUTRAGE I TELLS YA, when some poor schmuck who hadn’t drunk sufficient Cheney-Aid suggested that New York City might “deserve” more federal anti-terrism funds than the fourth-largest city in South Dakota?
Yea that’s part of my outrage about this bullshit. It’s one thing to make money off of shoveling manure because it’s useful but to make it by legitimizing bullshit is a whole nother order.
Anyway side story on barbie dolls. When I was a kid working for my dad we did work for Mattel and built the first barbie doll molds. Talk about screwing up a kid, even as a young teen I knew that no women looked like that, ever. Well they can but there is plastic involved and it’s not quite the same.
ET
As a Bama alum….. ROOOOOOOLLLL, TIIIIDE! ROLL!
Ok now that I have that out out my system…. Wish Bama’s play was better in the 3rd quarter but I am already sick of Texas fans saying Bama would have lost if McCoy had played the whole game. Please. If Texas needed one particular player to win, then maybe the rest of the teams wasn’t that good. Saying that, Gilbert may do well for Texas. He made a few big mistakes that Bama was able to capatalize on, but he brought the team within 3 points which is damn good for someone with little in the way of playing time.
flukebucket
Yeah. McCoy is good but he was not going to make 16 points worth of difference. Alabama was able to just fuck around and still win the game. The only question left now is which SEC team will win the National Championship next year?
PTirebiter
@ET:
Okay, as a Texan, let me say congrats, and pay no attention to what we refer to as the Whiny Orange. It would have been a better game with McCoy, and they may have even won, but Alabama was the better team. I think the Florida game made that obvious.

Transferred my priest “Bokeh” to Eitrigg. See ya soon, Mazog.

Hope to see some of you on Garrosh, where I roll with the GOS crowd.
