Ok,it’s super cold here(in the teens and a bit lower with the wind chill) and I have to housetrain a puppeh soon. Any thoughts? She’s a German Shep mix but does not have the deep coat of that breed. Her coat is smooth and short, not fluffy with an undercoat,so she’s gonna get cold out there pretty fast. She’s only about 8-9 weeks old, maybe 10-12 lbs.. Since I need to take her out at least every three hours or so,I don’t think a little jacket or sweater is going to be practical during this process. Carry her to the potty spot in the yard maybe? Or will that create an issue of me having to always carry her out the door? Am I overthinking this? Probably,I do that.
Also, what should I feed her? The shelter isn’t feeding the best quality food(most likely what’s been donated by local animal charities),and I will have to change her food to something else. Preferably something that won’t be too hard on her little tummy.
I understand there’s some football to be played this evening…

What I used to do with housebreaking is to put a leash on the puppy and tie the other end to my belt. This does a lot of great things, but for housebreaking it means we discover exactly what our puppy does to ask to go out… they just don’t know it yet.
By paying attention and using the leash to make sure we don’t lose sight of them, they will not be able to hide and go with privacy, so we can catch those first sniffings and whisk them out the door.
And that’s the most important thing; they want to learn that they ask to go out and then they go out, and then they go, and then the Puppy Parent goes happy happy joy joy, and they want to do it again.
My personal record? Two days, with a four month old Newfie mix.

@Pasquinade:
Good to hear she’s so sweet. Smudge is definitely not deaf. Half the pictures I have are from me clicking my tongue and her looking back at me.
I think you are overthinking this a bit. My brother’s Italian greyhound doesn’t have a problem getting his bony little ass outside to do his business, and last night, on my walk home from work at about 23°, I passed a guy who was laughingly complaining that he couldn’t get his aged pug to stop sniffing all the good snow smells and go back inside.

As for food, I always bought something that I could get conveniently. Trader Joe’s sells a pretty good dog food but I don’t know if they have a puppy formula. There has been a lot of discussion on the benefits of soft food but I always used dry. See if you can bring home a few cups of whatever they are feeding her. That way you can mix half and half a few days. It makes it easier to switch the foods. I felt that the munching was better on their teeth. @A Mom Anon: Related to puppies, I am going to recommend something I did with Max when I got him @ 11 weeks. I can’t remember where I read it, but I’m glad I read it and did it.
For like 20 minutes a night, when you are sitting on the couch, watching tv, do the following:
– pick up the puppy and place him/her upright, solidly against your side, under your arm. Make sure he/her stays upright and hold tightly while they squirm. Hold his front paws with one hand, if you can.
It establishes you as the master, and I swear, I have conquered the terrier in my wheaten terrier (not a small feat), in part because of this.
I did it every night for a couple of weeks. I’d recommend it with the large dog you are getting. Establishes those alpha human traits early and it a really great way to bond.
A former Bush legal counsel is onto bigger things (a vicious beating of his wife and $2 million bail)
This is one of the saddest things to stand out from this sordid mess:
Mr. Farren, who had last served as the deputy counsel in the White House under President George W. Bush, exploded in rage after Mrs. Farren would not rethink the divorce, the police said.
TPM/AP reports the new hill to die on for the House progressives is the insurer antitrust exemption.
You know what? I like this hill to die on! This is a pretty good hill to die on. Let’s run with this.
The Associated Press reports that House Democrats have largely abandoned their efforts to pass a public options in negotiations with Senate Dems, and are instead pushing for other reforms of the insurance companies: “House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other senior Democrats told President Barack Obama in recent meetings they want the legislation to strip the insurance industry of a long-standing exemption from federal antitrust laws, officials said. That provision is in the House-passed measure, but was omitted from the bill that the Senate passed on Christmas Eve.”…They also want the final measure to include a House-passed proposal for a nationwide insurance exchange, to be regulated by the federal government, where consumers could shop for private coverage. The Senate bill calls for a state-based system of exchanges…Additionally, House Democrats want to require insurers to spend a minimum amount of premium income on benefits, thereby limiting what is available for salaries, bonuses, advertising and other items. The House bill sets the floor at 85 percent; the Senate-passed measure lowers it to 80 percent for policies sold to small groups and individuals.
The excise tax is not mentioned, which seems to imply Pelosi at least is not pushing hard on that at this point. And I wonder, if the progressive side of the House is trading away the public option and the millionaires tax after making it clear how important both are to them then this seems to imply they should be able to get something fairly significant in return.
Henri has threatened to eat you all for dinner, while Momo’s reaction is that “we are not amused.”

FYI, for anyone interested, there’s an good blog post by Krugman on the insurance excise tax — he thinks it’s a good idea in principal, but that most of the criticisms of it need to be addressed.
Surprisingly, Krugman doesn’t have a big problem with way it might hurt some union deals:
The last argument is that this hurts unions which have traded off lower wages for better benefits. This would be a bigger issue than I think it is if the excise tax were going to kick in instantly. But it won’t, giving time to renegotiate those bargains. And bear in mind that this kind of renegotiation is exactly what the tax is supposed to accomplish.
That would seem to be a pretty winning strategy to me, at this point.

FYI, for anyone interested, there’s an good blog post by Krugman on the insurance excise tax — he thinks it’s a good idea in principal, but that most of the criticisms of it need to be addressed.
Krugman is rightfully acknowledged as an expert on macro economic issues, but he is clueless on how this translates into business and tax policy. A few items:
The argument for limiting the tax exclusion is that the tax break on health insurance encourages over-spending, so limiting it could help in the process of “bending the curve”.
WTF? Krugman offers nothing to support an argument that the health care spending here is for unnecessary care. He even fudges here, wrongly implying that the US “spends too much” on ineffective health care, which is not the same thing at all as another possibility — that we spend too much for over-priced health care. A tax does not necessarily translate into more efficient health care.
Second, there’s the argument that any reductions in premiums won’t be passed through into wages. I just don’t buy that.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid apologized Saturday following reports he had privately described then-candidate Barack Obama during the presidential campaign as a black candidate who could be successful thanks in part to his “light-skinned” appearance and speaking patterns “with no Negro dialect, unless he wanted to have one.”

OT, but this it toooo good. From the “Conservatives Are Assholes Everywhere” file, an Irish politician (also married to a political leader) has gotten herself into some trouble:
Even before the scandal, [she] had caused her husband political problems when she condemned homosexuals as revolting and called on them to seek help from psychiatrists and Christianity.
__
“Just as a murderer can be redeemed by the blood of Christ, so can a homosexual,” she said.
So what was the scandal? Oh, nothing big. Pretty tame by conservative scandals, actually: she had an affair. With someone of the opposite sex. Who was 39 years her junior. She’s 58, he’s 19.
Which, by itself, would normally just provoke the reaction: “Damn. You go, girl!”
But then she had to compound the problem by soliciting about $80,000 from donors, not reporting it, and giving it to her lover for a new restaurant.
@Sanka: What, so you’re telling me that old white male Democrats can be racist, too? What a fucking surprise. Talk about your damn strawmen. Go play in the sandbox with your weak shit.

The Robinson’s tried for some sympathy by suggesting that she had a bout of mental instability caused by the strain of, well, banging her young stud. And a suicide attempt. And agony as her husband struggled to understand and forgive her transgressions.
But when details about the financial shenanigans began to emerge, it turns out that Mrs Robinson had sought a kickback of some of the funds that were funneled to her toyboy. And she also demanded money back from her young lover when the “romance” soured.
And then there is the little thing that she broke the law in not reporting the help that she sought for her lover, since the restaurant was in her district, and also that her husband also broke the law in knowingly keeping quiet about the financial favors, whether or not he knew anything about the love affair.

It’s probably an old wives tale but my dogs have always had healthy teeth.

TPM/AP reports the new hill to die on for the House progressives is the insurer antitrust exemption.
You know what? I like this hill to die on! This is a pretty good hill to die on. Let’s run with this.

His name is being tossed around as a possible candidate to run for Kay Bailey Hutchison’s seat when she resigns.
News 8 talked to James who confirmed he is interested in getting involved in Republican Party politics, and he’s not ruling out a run for office.
James said in addition to his role as a college football analyst, he’s also been in business as a real estate broker and investor.
He calls himself a conservative and very concerned about government intervention in business and health care.

Anyway — as someone who expressed skepticism regarding the excise tax, and was generally against it — I thought it was worth mentioning here, seeing as how it supports John Cole’s previous post criticizing activism against the provision.

Krugman is rightfully acknowledged as an expert on macro economic issues, but he is clueless on how this translates into business and tax policy. A few items:
