I’d really like Sullivan to explain how Reason magazine has been functionally any different from FNC the past few months regarding health care reform (or, for that matter, any number of issues). Reason has been right there with Fox with the take our country back rhetoric, the fluffing of the tea partiers (including live coverage and nausea inducing videos with the Fonzi of Freedom Nick Gillespie), and their “expert” on Health Care reform, Suderman, got his start at… FreedomWorks.
The Koch Foundation and other Wingnut Welfare dispensers are getting what they want from Reason- it is just a different arm of the same PR machine that Fox belongs to, and Sullivan should know that by now.
I don’t know much about reason itself, but from the things I hear they are simply no different from any other libertarian I regularly interact with. That is that they are republicans, but republicans fucked up and they can’t admit they were wrong. That and saying you don’t belong to a party is the new fad.
@Warren Terra: I thought Dick was confined to a wheel chair by now. Is he actually out walking near ducks? Has anyone been shot in the face?
Slightly OT, but look at Peggy fucking Noonan and the rest of these fools talking about Brown and Coakley, if you dare:
General Winfield Stuck
Sullivan does not respond and is currently beaver busy digging Obamas political grave in Potters Field when Obama meets his Waterloo, Dien Bien Phu, and Pearl Harbor because he didn’t decommission that Killer Robot he promised to.
The Potters Field which lies beside the Village Potemkin within the great state of Masshole Choossits.
The only Dick Cheney Wheelchair material I can find is from the inauguration, so I don’t think so.
If it gets shot like a duck, it’s a 78-year-old Texas lawyer?
I think it is because Sullivan is desperate to find a trace of rational conservatism somewhere…anywhere. The problem with this is that the only nominally rational conservative left in this country is the one staring back at him from his mirror.
The stuff Sullivan SHOULD know, but does not, could fill the Library of Congress many times over.
How the heck is Koch = Coke?
@The Populist: Maybe Mr. Koch spent his entire childhood taunted by other kids?
“It’s pronounced FRAHNKEN-SHTEEN!!”
This was mentioned in an earlier thread, but some idiot was quoted by either the NYT or WaPo saying he’d “never seen the country this divided, and I grew up in the ’60s, with Vietnam.”
People like that need to be forced to go back and take a remedial history class, because they haven’t got a f**king clue. As I said earlier, those police dogs and tear gas canisters and National Guard bullets didn’t just up and attack the blacks, browns and DFHs by themselves in Selma, Chicago and Kent State.
This country really isn’t that divided right now, unless you count the 20-30 percent who watch FNC and listen to Beck and Limbaugh as “this country.”
F**k these people are stupid. I am praying to whatever superior powers there may be that Coakley walks with this thing in a landslide just so these people can drink a 64-ounce 7-11 cup of STFU. If she loses, I will disconnect from politics for the rest of the month, at least. I don’t know what I’ll do without my Juice fix, but i’ll have to manage, maybe only visit during open threads and pet rescue posts.
In OT food-related news: I just took my life in my hands by throwing some carrots, potatoes, onions and celery in a crock pot with some chicken leg quarters and spices. I hope it turns out okay.
But…….. that would invalidate his libertarian, objectivist credibility. Sheesh!!
@Bhall35: Deutsch and Noonan would never work again if there were any justice. Of course, MSNBC keeps Pat Buchanan on the air, so they apparently have some hidden racism in their ranks.
@Bhall35: Since the conservative southern white senators jumped ship to go to the GOP, the democratic party has never been close to a 60 seat majority until recently. It’s not the President’s waterloo unless the dems decide “just to grab their ankles”. (must credit that fat ass talk show host)
John, he agrees with you. About Moynihan’s piece, he said “This the voice of the FNC/RNC.”
Am I missing something?
Edit: He wants Coakley to win.
Sully’s mind is ripe for the taking.
I’ve always had good results, although it helps to add a a little garlic and oregano and a generous dash of rum for flavor.
Amen brother. If anything the country is angry. People like us are angry at those who think yelling and obstruction is fair public discourse. For those morons on the right, they are just idiots who buy into the idea that one day they, too, will be rich and are just looking out for those who have money.
If Coakley wins, I still have faith that people see through the nonsense that is this teabag movement. If she loses by just a hair, I see it as a message to Brown that he really has no agenda.
Now if he somehow wins by 5-10 points, I will just say congrats Massachusetts…you voted a guy in because a baseball player told you to.
OT. I’m watching Wall Street on netflix instant. Michael Douglas just delivered his greed is good speech.
Maybe this is not ot, after all we are discussing Reason Magazine and Fox News.
Well, this shouldn’t be so surprising with Sully. Sullivan — he who doth not allow comments on his posts — is confusing a few posters at The Seminal (some of whom don’t like Coakley) with Jane at FDL (who has backed and still backs Coakley). Apparently he thinks that all diarists on Daily Kos are in lockstep with Markos, or the people who comment at Balloon Juice all have pictures of John Cole (with Tunch) over their beds.*
*Well, I confess to the Tunch picture, but hey, it’s Tunch.
When did Sully break into my apartment?!?!?
Wile E. Quixote
And I’d like a shiny pink pony that shits rainbows. In your listing of the usual suspects you forgot Matt “I Prefer French Health Care” Welch.
Have we ever even seen a picture of John? Or should I say . . . Joann?
Why is Sully still writing for The Atlantic? Did something–anything–happen that would have forced him to resign? I’m sure it will, so why doesn’t he simply resign right now to get it over with.
I don’t usually read Reason, so perhaps I missed something, but maybe someone else has and can answer: have they been writing about HSA/MSA-style plans? Outside of simply giving vouchers to use in the current insurance market, it seems to be the only alternative to anything like what the Democrats are proposing. (I know that’s a fairly big group of suggested policies.) If not, why not? It’s not exactly a new idea. Expansion of them was included in the Medicare Part D bill. Milton Friedman was taking about the idea decades ago. I’m skeptical if it would work as a primary policy, but perhaps it could do some good as part of an integrated package. And if they weren’t talking about that or some other solution, what was the magazine’s contribution? Surely they can’t defend the system as is.
Reason is one incredibly misnamed publication. The tagline should be: “I don’t think that word means what you think it means.”
@Wile E. Quixote: Matt Welch being a prime example.
@Demo Woman: I saw your recommendation earlier today. I don’t know if I’m brave enough to queue it up though. Just so depressingly familiar.
what a pitiful joke you Janebots are, trolling all over bloggerdom to wave your swords in defense of Queen Jane.
So Her Eminence deigned to toss a few crumbs Coakley’s way the night before the election. Woohoo.
It was an honest mistake for Sully to make. You see, people have come to equate voting for Brown with killing HCR — and guess where Jane fits in to that concept.
@Bhall35: Well, that was barfworthy.
@eemom: Now you are sounding unhinged too.
@arguingwithsignposts: You are better off with dark meat in the crock pot, since white meat cooks faster. In any case, chicken doesn’t need as much time as pork or beef; I take it out sooner because it actually needs some texture.
Hello to Smudgie!
So sorry, but I couldn’t care less what I sound like to you. I’m sick of FDL’s bullshit. She came here to defend Jane’s “honor” when that wasn’t even the topic of the post.
@arguingwithsignposts: I agree with you here. I am not an everyday commenter (I just don’t have that kind of time, as much as I would like to) but I am constantly checking the six or seven blogs I regularly visit, and basically since November things have just gotten crazy as a cut snake no matter what the political story. I do agree that all this pales in comparison to the political climate of 1968 or right before the secession, BUT the populist hate lately on display make a beggar of belief, and all the modern conveniences we have just makes it all seems so very PRESENT in our lives. I roam between several offices everyday here in the South where I work as a network guy, and everyday for me lately is lke a GOP rally, because one office will be blaring Fox News, the next will have Rush on the AM radio, the next will be listening to Neal Boortz, and maybe one in ten will have CNN or MSBNC on. Let there be no doubt: our very slightest of leans to the left nationally have RIALED THESE GIES THE FUK UP.
When Brown inevitably wins this evening (I say inevitaby, in the hopes that the longstanding Curse of the Mistaken Certainty of Jason will come into effect), that is going to be my cue to take break from this shit for awhile. Not forever, but just long enough to come back to it fresh. Besides, all the people I work with who know I’m a lefty (surprisingly few) will be rubbing my face in this anyway, and I’m just going to keep my head low and wait for some good news.
@eemom: Yeah, well FDL couldn’t care less, either. You and Jane make a cute couple.
Sullivan’s links are down. Flooded with people stocking up on outrage?
Isn’t Suderman the Future Mr Meghan McArdle?
On an unrelated note, I’d like to send a big thank you through to tubes to Russ Feingold, for confirming my meh opinion of him.
That Russ, so boldly going his own way by joining Olly Snowe, Mitch McConnell and the rest of the Back To The Drawing Board Caucus.
Yea, verily, the Running of the Panicked (or Opportunistic) Blue Dogs hath begun.
@Bhall35: Nope. That is all.
@eemom: WTF is with the personal hostility? I can remember Phoenix Woman commenting here sometimes quite a while back, so she’s not “trolling”. Also, I’ve been more than a little critical of some of the stances of Jane Hamsher and others on FDL, but some of the direct hating in that direction here is getting extremely tiring. That sort of bile should be reserved for the wingnuts.
@eemom: I’m with you. In fact, I’ll just go a step further and admit that I have pretty much always stayed away from FDL. I’m not annoyed by everything about it, maybe, but the Jane Hamsher commentary part is just not much fun for me. She’s just such a walking stereotype of the Hollywood liberal (And I say this even as a total fan of Alec Baldwin). She may be a angelic human on a personal level, and if she is that’s great, but I know that I’m instantly turned off when she’s on the news. I also read the post she made about her dog dying (this is pretty terrible of me, I admit) and it literally made me cackle with misplaced delight. Dogs are not Buddhists, Jane.
Excuse-o-meter option #38: Marcia Coakley lost because of the Undie-bomber. Seriously.
That sort of bile should be reserved for the wingnuts.
You have not been here for a few days. No?
General Winfield Stuck
It’s not hating. Jane’ politicking has done gone over the deep end for evermore, jumped shark, crossed the Rubicon. She can no longer be defended as anything but a destructive to dems nut, the day she appeared on Fox News with Grover fucking Norquist. Case closed.
Funny, I seem to recall a little event about 139 years ago that involved Americans actually shooting at each other and burning down their cities.
Not that a few Republicans probably wouldn’t like to go back to those days and forgo the whole election pretense.
Kerry Howley and Julian Sanchez are the only libertarians I bother with, and that’s because they seem like actual libertarians and not just Republicans who want to do drugs and fuck.
@Neutron Flux: Oh yes I have and I’m disgusted with much of the internecine warfare. I like it here, it’s my main blogospheric hangout, but Glennzilla and some parts of FDL and other parties that are regularly derided harshly here are in my RSS reader. And I maintion that the important enemy is the wingnuts out there on the far right, not so much the sometimes-too-purist on the left.
Yes, but so has pointing it out.
Not all that new.
Sean Hannity has been claiming for a while now that he’s really a conservative and that party labels don’t matter to him.
Of course it’s Sean Hannity so you can assume he’s lying through his teeth. :)
right. We’d do much better to just suck it up.
General Winfield Stuck
@AhabTRuler: That’s your opinion and you are entitled to it. Others differ.
As long as Jane keeps going on the teevee to do her thing, I will continue to point it out. If she stops that, then she does a lot less damage, and mine and others criticism will wane accordingly.
@General Winfield Stuck: I guess this is the thread for that Obot v. Prog flame war you arming up for. lulz
@eemom: No, not at all. In fact, it’s really much better to belabor the point.
General Winfield Stuck
@scudbucket: LOL, could be, could be, though I was mostly kidding, but since it was already going, no need to waste the opportunity.
Yeah, Jane Hamsher is (IMHO) annoying, and she incarnates a kind of insularity that is way too prevalent in the blogosphere, but I don’t think we should exaggerate the influence of the ‘sphere, much less of Jane Hamsher and FDL. I believe 10% of registered Dems say they regularly read blogs.
Just caught Reihan Salam on the News Hour. Man is he a noxious prig. Dude uses precise diction to spout a rapid fire nutter CW faster than Cheney eats puppies.
I will pay not to have to see him again – another Atlantic Alum.
JaJim? Why was I JaJim at @JaJim: Fat fingers, I guess. maybe I should keep it to distinguish myself from the other Jim.
Moron. This is not going to go down well for you, Jane or anybody at FDL. Your tears will taste like puppy kisses as Jane has to go out and find real work.
@Jim: Yes, after breakfast.
@General Winfield Stuck: I call it hating. And you, General, are one of the commenters here I have a bit of a problem with. Look at what you’re doing here again, reducing parts of the liberal left blogosphere down to one person. As I said, I’ve disagreed with many on the left side of the spectrum and criticized specific views and actions, but i refuse to engage in hippie-bashing cliquish trench warfare. Leave the casting to the teabaggers.
@Nethead Jay: It should of course be casting out in the last sentence. Also, I want to be specific that I’m accusing you, GWS, of direct hating, but @Michael has just provide a wonderful example of what I’m talking about.
@Michael: How about not being a sexist asshole in the first two words. And how the hell do you justify that directly hateful last paragraph. It’s close to wingnut methodology.
srsly. And those EYEBROWS.
Ooh, ooh, Excuse-o-meter option #64: It’s all the fault of angry white guys.
@Michael: Now that’s just fucking stupid.
General Winfield Stuck
LOL. you’re not the only one. The line forms over there.
Yes, Sullivan, please explain so that you can get another pointless link and that Reason Magazine’s inordinate sway over the gears of government can finally be broken.
