Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

Happy indictment week to all who celebrate!

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

🎶 Those boots were made for mockin’ 🎵

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

Make the republican party small enough to drown in a bathtub.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Take your GOP plan out of the witness protection program.

Not all heroes wear capes.

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

The willow is too close to the house.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

White supremacy is terrorism.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

    @Demo Woman: He’s not quite up for cake just yet, sadly — we just started him on bananas last week. Although it probably won’t hurt him to have the teeniest, tiniest, taste of frosting. I got some nice pictures of him recently with my mom, and so will be uploading those soon. His newest trick is to stick his tongue out the side of his mouth and go “Pbbtttt!” It’s pretty cute…except that he keeps doing it just as I put the spoonful of food in his mouth. It’s like trying to feed a ceiling fan.

    No offense to anyone else, but if it’s kay that would be good with me – I look for her take on most things discussed here, and if for no other reason than she deserves it for being the warrior princess in The Greenwald Epic.

    Today on Sunday Morning, Bill Geist visits Embarrass, MN which is about 30-40 minutes from my home.
    There were about 4 partridges sitting in the tops of maple & birch trees in our yard just a little while ago. It’s fun watching those big, round birds move around on those upper thin branches.

    Well, the wine is bought and the white is well chilled. All is ready in preparation for another epic dinner from my John. He won’t tell me what we’re having other than at least one course will be seafood and another beef. I am fervently hoping for some more of his outstanding orange zest pound cake for dessert. I plan to be eating on a royal scale as I cheer for the Jets and Saints. Kinda nice to have no dog in the fight as I can cheer for whatever team I wish or change my loyalties at the slightest whim. With the Steelers in the hunt, it’s more emotionally fraught and there’s almost always a great payoff, it being the Steelers and all. But it’s also fun to not have any anxiety attached to the outcome.

    *MIL sold house, didn’t bother finding new place to live, hasn’t done a thing about packing up, so we’re doing it all, against a horrendous deadline. And then I end up with MIL living with us in our very small house until she finds her own place. Round the clock nightmares.

    Oh and I’d be thrilled if it was Hilzoy or (doubtful) TBogg who is coming to the front page. I’d also welcome some BJer being promoted, but it would depend on the person whether it would thrill me or not. If it’s anyone that’s in or should be in my pie filter (but I just can’t bring myself to do it yet), count me as not so thrilled unless they don’t mind me saying so. I await with baited breath, regardless.

    Two things on this suprisingly warm Sunday morning, at least where I live:

    1. This article, describing how David Plouffe will be returning to take a firmer grasp of political operations for Democrats nationwide, makes me smile. Leaving aside the fact that it’s good for me because I’m a Democrat and want to see them win, it’s part of what attracted me to Obama. He’s great in a number of ways, but certainly not perfect, so he will make mistakes. But that’s only bad if he lets them drag him and others around him down. He’s not doing that here. As far as I know, instead of panicking, he’s trying to keep his cool and move forward. Now we just need to see more of this on the policy end.

    2. Paul Krugman for Federal Reserve Chairman? Not going to happen, if I had to bet, if only because (a) Bernanke probably has the full support of the White House and (b) Krugman both wouldn’t want it and, because of his “partisan” past, wouldn’t take it. But according to Simon Johnson, he’s not just an expert in trade theory, he’s also an expert in monetary policy. I’d prefer some guy named Joe Gagnon, who according to Brad DeLong and Mark Thoma, has presented a very solid plan for jump starting employment. I have no idea how to assess this stuff, so take my opinion for what it’s worth, but if there’s something that we haven’t tried that could potentially work, it’s nuts that we haven’t given it a chance. Plus, it’d be nice to stop the idea that the Fed Chairman is The One and, Gagnon was a Democrat, that would be nice, too.

    It would be amazing and a wondrous thing if it were Hilzoy. I don’t know why I didn’t know this before, but I just found out (from Mr. Google) that she is IRL the estimable Hilary Bok, daughter of Derek Bok and granddaughter of Gunnar Myrdall. Those are some incredible intellectual chops she inherited (to say nothing of her own contributions).

    But truly? I trust John to identify and nurture someone who will give as much pleasure and provocation and humour and outraged sensibilities as John himself, DougJ, Tim F, and Anne Laurie. Whoever the new front-pager is, it will be fun to see what kinds of changes happen, and to be part of them.

    David Plouffe has an op-ed in the WaPo. He says to Dems….

    “– No bed-wetting. This will be a tough election for our party and for many Republican incumbents as well. Instead of fearing what may happen, let’s prove that we have more than just the brains to govern — that we have the guts to govern. Let’s fight like hell, not because we want to preserve our status, but because we sincerely believe too many everyday Americans will continue to lose if Republicans and special interests win.”

    January 24, 2010 at 10:05 am

    @Ana Gama:

    I’m not sure if anything meaningful can be done in time, and maybe it’ll start to improve enough on its own to help the White House anyway, but the No More Mister Nice Guy blog made the point yesterday that simply passing a health care bill won’t save the Democrats. Creating jobs, on the other hand, will. I don’t entirely agree, but at the very least, he’s right that jump starting employment will help the Democrats. Not that mediocrity should be the goal, but I’d go so far as to say that it doesn’t have to be anything major. A couple of months where, say, 50,000 jobs are created each month would probably reap enormous benefits. That’s well below where we need to be, but probably good enough to change the mindset of many.

    @Brian J:

    the No More Mister Nice Guy blog made the point yesterday that simply passing a health care bill won’t save the Democrats. Creating jobs, on the other hand, will. I

    Plouffe makes a similiar point. His multi-point prescription for Dems is:

    Pass a meaningful health insurance reform package without delay.

    We need to show that we not just are focused on jobs but also create them.

    Make sure voters understand what the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act did for the economy.

    Don’t accept any lectures on spending.

    “Change” is not just about policies.

    Run great campaigns.

    No bed-wetting.

    Seems like good advice to me.

    @geg6: If you can’t say anything nice….

    Seriously, if the best one can do is criticize the common wisdom and suggest one person (and sure, I like aimai too, but whatever), I’d say one clearly suffers from a lack of imagination. I would be perfectly happy with any number of people from the comments, ten people at least. I’m not going to name names though because this just strikes me as an unwise thing to do, but mostly because my cute little recommendations would have zero pull.

    But while we’re making dick moves, here, I’ll admit that I really didn’t think that Anne Laurie fit in well here at first. And I still don’t always “get” what she is trying to do, but she is growing on me and I appreciate the huge effort she brings to her posts. So I’m going to keep an open mind even if it does end up being Cornerstone.

    I’m a little choked up ***sniff*** by the many, many vociferous endorsements, but it’s obvious Mr. Cole does not enjoy my sense of humor nor my perspective.
    Cole doesn’t do anything half-way. When he mops, he goes for The Full Monty mop and when he breaks a shoulder he wrecks The Whole God Damn Thing. He was a full throated asshole Republican and now he’s a full throated asshole Democrat. Point being, when he goes for a thing he Goes All In and his narrative is The Way It Is.
    So, kids, don’t be a wanker and learn a lesson from Uncle Corner.
