Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The fundamental promise of conservatism all over the world is a return to an idealized past that never existed.

Open Thread: Sunday Dinner Edition

First of all, Happy Birthday, RedKitten!

The new router is working, but not the Spousal Unit’s latest version of the home-built-from-parts PC. So I haven’t been able to access my email since Tuesday, but during a two-minute “here, see if it starts now” failtest I realized I’d forgotten all about Bad Horse’s Filly’s Thursday Night Menu. Which I am appending here, with my most sincere apologies to BHF, and in the hopes that some of you are still thinking about what to fix for Sunday dinner…

“This is an elegant dinner that looks like it took you all day to prepare. From start to finish I cooked the asparagus and gnocchi in 1/2 hour. The strawberry bread takes an hour to cook, but it’s a breeze to put together. So if you feel the need for something special, but still easy, this one could be for you.

On the board tonight:

– Baked Ricotta Gnocchi
– Broiled Asparagus
– Loaf of good crusty bread
– Strawberry Bread

Ohhh, I have one of those – Home built PC, not spousal unit, that is. I can’t love ’em enough. What’s under the hood?

I’m always amazed when once in a while, Thomas Friedman actually writes something that makes sense.

Of course, at least one graf is utterly ridiculous:

And, at the same time, that grass-roots movement went dormant on its own, apparently thinking that just getting the first African-American elected as president was the moon shot of this generation, and nothing more was necessary.

Right. Went dormant. Whichever side you stand on in the FDL/Kossack factions/etc wars, the last thing in the world I’d call it is “dormant”.

Frank Rich thinks its the White House, at least in terms of political smarts, who went dormant. And I agree. I think David Plouffe back on the job bodes nothing but well. God I hope so.

And that’s your morning NY times summary from the overseas Bureau.

@MTiffany: Oh good for a moment there I did read that as you having a home-built spousal unit. My thought was “Good God. I don’t want to even know…”

@asiangrrlMN: Yikes. See I said I didn’t want to know and that’s why!

It just confirms my theory that no matter how far technology and science advance, they’ll be used for the most absurd and retro purposes imaginable. Like Wingnuts using computers made possible only by hard-fought discoveries in quantum physics to write posts about how science is liberal propaganda and the Earth was created six thousand years ago by Ayn Rand.

@Bill E Pilgrim: That’s not even the worst of it. I did an article on the uncanny valley with robots awhile back (how the closer they get to human, the creepier they get). Yeah. Somethings are best left unimagined.

Ha! I love this. Thanks for the hearty chuckle.

And, just because I can, I don’t know for whom I will root in today’s game. As I speculated last week, on the one hand, the Vikings are my team. On the other hand, if they make the SB, they will have even more leverage to force the taxpayers of Hennepin County to finance a brand-new $800 M stadium. On the third hand, I really like most of the guys on the team and think they deserve a chance to go to the SB. On the fourth hand, fuck Brett Favre with a rusty pitchfork.

So, yeah, we’ll see come game=time for whom I will be rooting (probably the Vikes, but I won’t be heartbroken if the Saints win).

Oh, RedKitten, you bring back memories. The youngest of my three boys is 25, and I still remember how it felt to be absolutely obsessed with sleep. I lived for the moment when I could lie down on the bed and close my eyes without guilt. For a few years, it seemed that someone always needed something, day or night. I feel for you and wish for you a happy birthday and a good nap.

    Indeed.
I’ll match my new $1200 Core i7 860/8GB RAM/Radeon 5770 setup against any Dell or HP in that price range any day.

The key is doing your research and choosing quality (e.g.; Seasonic PSU’s instead of CWT models, Gigabyte over Foxconn motherboards, etc.) parts.

As for what’s under the hood, this is a shitty picture taken after I’d made sure everything worked but prior to the final wire routing.

I mentioned on Friday that I was making duck confit, so here is a flickr stream of the progression. I’ll blog it in more detail tonight or tomorrow, but I thought it went pretty well.

They weren’t completely covered by fat, but after making confit (or trying anyway) 4 or 5 times I don’t think that’s so pivotal… they always float up regardless. Criticism or commentary welcome.

Another day, another Global Warming Lie exposed. Faked temperature readings. Fake, non-peer-reviewed glacier data. Now faked, non-peer-reviewed “catastrophic weather” research. The “science” behind Al Gore’s fairy story keeps a-crumbling.

The Sunday Times has since found that the scientific paper on which the IPCC based its claim had not been peer reviewed, nor published, at the time the climate body issued its report.

When the paper was eventually published, in 2008, it had a new caveat. It said: “We find insufficient evidence to claim a statistical relationship between global temperature increase and catastrophe losses.”

Despite this change the IPCC did not issue a clarification ahead of the Copenhagen climate summit last month. It has also emerged that at least two scientific reviewers who checked drafts of the IPCC report urged greater caution in proposing a link between climate change and disaster impacts — but were ignored.

Do you all feel like suckers yet? Probably not. A sucker never knows he’s been duped.

@Bender: You know what? So fucking what if it is all a fake?

Can you honestly sit there and tell me that it’s a GOOD thing for us to be pumping tons and tons of pollution into the air we breathe, and the water we drink, and the land in which we grow our food? Can you honestly sit there and tell me that the constant smog hanging over many of our world’s cities is good for the residents therein? Can you honestly sit there and tell me that dumping industrial waste into our rivers and oceans has absolutely no effect on the fish that we ingest daily?

I don’t give a flying fuck at a rolling donut if climate change is real or a hoax. Our landfills are too goddamn full, and our water and air are too fucking polluted. For those reasons alone, we should be trying to stop making so much garbage and we should stop dumping so much crap into our air and water. Even if we don’t give a sweet goddamn about the planet, we should at least be selfish enough to want clean air to breathe and clean water to drink.

@Redkitten: Well, if Global Climate Disruption (the term I prefer) were a complete hoax, we wouldn’t have to worry so much about carbon dioxide, which aside from being a greenhouse gas is pretty harmless.

Of course, that’s a pretty huge “aside from,” and Climate Disruption is NOT a hoax, and you’re right about everything else IMO.

    And Happy Birthday.

    @Bender:

the scientific paper on which the IPCC based its claim

The IPCC report, the year it was the Nobel Prize recipient, was written by more than four thousand authors. “The scientific paper on which it based its claim” would refer to one out of four thousand, or probably one out of closer to seven thousand, since some authors cited and submitted multiple papers to the IPCC report.

I’m sure you didn’t mean to give the impression that there was only one paper that the IPCC report consisted of, instead of more than four thousand, right? Because that would be something that someone like George Will would do, or others who willfully distort “facts” in order to bolster some false claim.

My munchkin just turned six, and, though I now get enough sleep, I am still in that “always needs something” stage and it’s really taking a toll on me. With all her energy, I feel like I’m constantly being assaulted and having my space invaded. Stomping on my feet, climbing on me, kicking my seat in the car. It’s godawful annoying. I’m like, of ALL the spaces in the world, why is ON MY FEET the most attractive?

    Oh, wait. I forgot. Vodka.
