Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

75% of people clapping liked the show!

This chaos was totally avoidable.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

When they say they are pro-life, they do not mean yours.

SCOTUS: It’s not “bribery” unless it comes from the Bribery region of France. Otherwise, it’s merely “sparkling malfeasance”.

Republicans do not trust women.

The revolution will be supervised.

A tremendous foreign policy asset… to all of our adversaries.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Why is it so hard for them to condemn hate?

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

She burned that motherfucker down, and I am so here for it. Thank you, Caroline Kennedy.

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

“What are Republicans afraid of?” Everything.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

One of our two political parties is a cult whose leader admires Vladimir Putin.

People are complicated. Love is not.

As Long As You’re Phone Banking

31 House Republicans voted to declare that wingnut wiretapper James O’Keefe was “owed a debt of gratitude by the people of the United States”. Since you guys in Republican districts have been asking me what to do, why not ask their staff how they feel about O’Keefe now? Republicans who support wiretapping in general (that is, most of them) ought to stand by their vote proudly. List after the flip.

Todd Akin [R-MO2] Roscoe Bartlett [R-MD6] Joe Barton [R-TX6] Rob Bishop [R-UT1] Jo Bonner [R-AL1] John Boozman [R-AR3] Paul Broun [R-GA10] Henry Brown [R-SC1] John Campbell [R-CA48] John Carter [R-TX31] Howard Coble [R-NC6] Tom Cole [R-OK4] Michael Conaway [R-TX11] John Culberson [R-TX7] Mary Fallin [R-OK5] Trent Franks [R-AZ2] Louis Gohmert [R-TX1] Kay Granger [R-TX12] Ralph Hall [R-TX4] Jim Jordan [R-OH4] Steve King [R-IA5] John Kline [R-MN2] Doug Lamborn [R-CO5] Blaine Luetkemeyer [R-MO9] Daniel Lungren [R-CA3] Kenny Marchant [R-TX24] Joseph Pitts [R-PA16] Bill Posey [R-FL15] Phil Roe [R-TN1] Jean Schmidt [R-OH2] John Shadegg [R-AZ3]

OK, Tim. My congresswoman is Jean “Patriotic Scrunchie” Schmidt. Haven’t called her because, well, what’s the point?

Would love to ask if she’s interested in renouncing her own vote on that resolution, though. Should I? Hmmm…

We get to test my hypothesis that support for wiretapping, waterboarding and everything in between is inversely proportionate to the number of white, conservative, middle class Christians arrested for the alleged crimes.

IOW, when the children of Republicans are involved, the civil rights questions suddenly become much more relevant and the wingnuts start to pay attention to the concerns expressed by the hippies.

This is depressing me. Remember in the sixties (or for me, documentaries on the sixties), when hippies would be doing crazy stuff like blowing up buildings for peace and stealing books and protesting and marching in the streets and all that?

It seems that the right has really stolen the left’s political street theater, aided and abetted by a compliant MSM. As a well-groomed leftie, I don’t think I’d try any of that sixties stuff now; I’d probably be thrown in Gitmo for terrorism and disowned by everyone but the Communist Party of America.

I think this is info on the resolution:

At the beginning of the month, with very little fanfare, Rep. Pete Olson (R-Texas), a freshman member who holds Tom DeLay’s old seat, introduced H. Res 809 to honor James O’Keefe III and Hannah Giles, the young conservatives who filmed the ACORN sting that grabbed headlines last month.

The link indicates that it lacked support. Don’t know if it actually passed.

I think we should do something else in addition to phone banking. Since the Supremes decided that ads by anyone, foreign countries and the like is free speech I think we should start asking the government of france, germany, and anybody else to start giving money to our congress man to pass healthcare. Hell if they get money from them they don’t need to worry about healthcare insurance companies right? I mean, it’ll work.

So while phone banking tell em that you’re also talking to the ministries in france and germany to help lobby for this bill. Do that especially to republicans haha…

Anyone remember newsmaps? They were the rage in the early aughts. What they do is measure how big a story is by hits, number of articles, etc, and assembles them all on a map so you can see what the big stories are.

I find it really helpful to know that the things I was blogging about avidly were 8-point font news items.

I haven’t heard anybody talking about them in a few years, but they’re still out there, if anyone’s interested:

Newsmap for US National News. (you can add sports and business on the bottom right.)

Its good to see that politics is outscoring the Kerrigan family feud (though, of course, my thoughts and prayers go out to the Kerrigan family during this difficult time).

And, please, please, don’t transport him to the US for trial. Because our legal system is not designed to convict the guilty. The last thing we need is to give him a platform for a “show trial,” where he will have the ability spew his political beliefs. Nooooooooooooooo

“Individuals who lawfully expose wrongful activities by an entity like ACORN receiving federal tax dollars should be praised,” Olson told The Hill in an e-mail. “However, if recent events conclude that any laws were broken in the incident in Senator Landrieu’s office – that is not something I condone.”

Back on topic, my own critter, surprisingly, is not on the list. I’m actually kind of amazed there are only 31 repunks listed. Someone wasn’t paying attention when that particular memo went out.

P.S. @Mark S. #19: I have to confess an unhealthy fascination with Virginia Foxx and not in a good way. First of all, it’s really hard to believe she holds a doctorate. In anything. From any accredited university (no offense to any Juicers from UNC-G, but come ON!). Second, and I know this is risky, but she is only 66 years old? Really? *Really?* I’m nearly two years older chronologically but — and I *truly* don’t think I’m delusional here — I promise you, if you put the two of us together, there is nobody who would think that she was younger. Gods know I’m no beauty and I look my age and not pretending otherwise, but I swear Foxx looks like someone in her 80s. Am I just in denial? (And yeah, I’m guilty of ageism and lookism here.
