Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I was promised a recession.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Bark louder, little dog.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

We cannot abandon the truth and remain a free nation.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

Hot air and ill-informed banter

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

An almost top 10,000 blog!

We are aware of all internet traditions.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Even dumber than the Rahm Emanuel “retarded” controversy?

Consider this an open tread.

More like the woman has a knack for getting herself on Sullivan’s blog.

This is about as controversial as…oh, name something nobody should give an nth of a shit about.

At this point Sullivan’s Palin obsession has to point to the fact that he is head over heels in love with her.

What Sarah Serendipity saw through the looking glass

    According to White Wabbit

    The Queen of Hearts,
    she made some tarts,
    All on a summer day:
    The Knave of Hearts,
    he stole those tarts,
    And took them quite away

    Shame of that Brown man
    for stealing Sarah’s tart

Sigh. Bible Spice’s political career is over.

No one can maintain the excitement necessary for a successful political campaign and appear on TV as regular, daily, mundane, correspondent. By the time 2012 rolls around, Sarah will discover that she has all the political appeal of Glenn Beck combined with Laura Ingraham or Greta Van Susteren or Nancy Grace — which is to say, just enough to win a time slot on Fox News, but not enough to win an election.

I’d like her to maintain enough political appeal to make a third-party run in 2012 and siphon off enough votes to throw it to Obama, but that’s about it.

It is good to see some of those dumbass conservatives who went after Clinton for years with fake scandals now on the side of Obama. Hopefully Sullivan will call it ‘Palinphonecall-gate’, and later a special prosecutor can impeach Brown over it.

My problem with the former scenario is that a) no one would forget if the Wasilla whack-job called them up and spoke with them on their night of victory

Sully and Lady Starburts need to get a fucking room already. She seeks to push the boundaries of her limited fame, and he’s been more than happy to oblige her. If he wanted her to go away, he’d ignore her.

@jeffreyw…that’s perfect! We got 10 pounds of large shrimp yesterday direct from Pt Aransas. Had some lightly fried last night…heaven!… and was planning on a shrimp/garlic/pasta something for dinner tonight. mmmmmm

Some of the rest of the shrimp are going into my Super Bowl gumbo on Sunday. I had been planning a thematically appropriate food for the game and had secretly been rooting for the Saints just so I could make that gumbo.

    Thanks for the recipe.

I’ll be very interested to see what persona Brown adopts as a Senator. My guess is that the only way he gets more than three years is by becoming like 2002-vintage McCain and by being a pain in the ass of the GOP leadership by cutting deals with Democrats all over the place. If he does that right out of the gate, I’d expect him to have a chance at another term. If, as I expect, he doesn’t do this, he’ll either lose in 2012 when Obama’s at the top of the ticket, or he’ll run for governor or something like that.

I’m still incredulous that he won, and shocked at how bad Coakley was. Her main messages seemed to be: healthcare (which is irrelevant in MA), this is Ted Kennedy’s seat (?), Scott Brown is a bad guy because he doesn’t pay for his workers’ health insurance (?), etc. Were it not for the Dem wave in 2006, would she have ever held an elected position?

Does this mean that a Brown/Palin ticket is unlikely? Or does it mean that a Palin/Brown ticket is more likely? Or does it mean that a Palin/Brown ticket is unlikely? Or does it mean that between now and 2012 that the Mayans were more likely right? The dumbitude that is our discourse must mean we’re in the outer reaches of the Wingularity, where all rational thought ceases.

I would like to think that Brown decided not to talk to Sarahcuda and instructed his aides accordingly. Maybe he figured out that she is the kiss of death and didn’t want her hanging around.

I do think that Sarah may be just what Sully needs but they should get a room first.

And a shameless plug for the how to cook the above page.

Thanks jeffreyw! I always wanted instructions on how to cook a page. If I were you I would send a copy of it to Mark Foley. He might stop chasing pages and decide to cook one some day.

Let’s play the tape through to the end:

    1. Palin releases her phone records; there either (a) was or (b) wasn’t a call.
    2a. Andrew Sullivan is disappointed.
2b. Sarah Palin makes a whatever face, maybe blames the whole thing on Todd or the liberal media.
    3. Nobody gives a shit.

    bad Coakley was

This is a very important point.

    Coakley was a horrible candidate.

    Carly Fiorina bad.

Didn’t help that her “tough on crime” reputation was earned at the expense of the Black community, who, not surprisingly didn’t turn out to vote for her.

@Mike Furlan: Yeah, Carly Fiorina is bad. I don’t know why any Republican donated to her after her surrogacy for McCain.

But at least Fiorina has been in the ballpark of what the public wants to hear about. Coakley? Pretty much every theme of her campaign was specifically designed to appeal to the Hillaryites and noone else. How else can you square the focus on health care (irrelevant in MA), on Brown’s staff’s health insurance (only Brown’s staff cared) and how he tried to keep rape victims from getting help? I don’t know if any of that stuff was true (the latter seems stretched), but how much resonance was that going to have outside the Girl Power! types? Meanwhile, she had nothing about the environment. Nothing about Brown’s macho asshole persona on torture. Nothing about his bullshit “I hate the banks so much I want them to keep their money, plus not have any new restrictions!” populism. Nothing! Except for third-rate gender cardism! I wonder if she even got 30% of the male vote in the Dem primary.

Coakley didn’t deserve to win. She seems to be a constituency-obsessed, unimaginative seat-filler. But Brown absolutely doesn’t deserve to be a senator.

    @Cat Lady:

Does this mean that a Brown/Palin ticket is unlikely? Or does it mean that a Palin/Brown ticket is more likely? Or does it mean that a Palin/Brown ticket is unlikely? Or does it mean that between now and 2012 that the Mayans were more likely right?

It is to Palin’s benefit if she can convince people (defined as the 28-percenter base and the Media Village Idiots) that she is the Queen of All Teabaggers, someone whose imprimatur is required by any self-styled “independent” Republican who wants access to “her” pool of voters. It is to Wrentham Grifter Brown’s interest to pretend he’s never heard from — barely heard of — the Wasilla Grifter. If he’s trying to keep his new job as Senator Masshole, he needs to stay as far away from the Teabagger spokesmodels as possible. If, on the other hand, he decides to go for broke and court the Fox News low-information demographic in search of national office, accepting Palin’s phonecall and her implicit claim to be the Teabagger gatekeeper gives her an advantage.

Either way, the sensible thing is for Brown (or his handlers) to keep insisting that they never got that call. The only interesting thing, for those of us not Andrew Sullivan, will be seeing whether the Wrentham Grifter gets to ignore the Wasilla Grifter without being reprimanded by the rightwing wingnut wurlitzer. If Brown’s people don’t have to “walk back” his I-never-heard-from-her declaration, it means Palin’s losing some of her Number One Queen of the RW Idiots credentials.
