Paterson’s bombshell is hanging out in a bar with Sarah Palin’s bombshell, the one Sully promised us but never delivered. Nothing worse than juicy gossip denied.

Okay, I remember when this guy stood up for his first presser after taking office and said: so, my wife and I have a VERY open relationship, oh, and I’m a fan of cocaine. So let’s move on.
I figured after that opening, it was going to require satanic ritual or something to touch him.
Rumor has it that it involves a pretty transparent and egregious awarding of a multi-million dollar state contract in return for waiving his gambling debt. In other words, big-time official misconduct, rather than personal.

Steve
The NY papers have been going nuts about this for days. I realize a lot of reporting is nothing more than passing around rumors, but I can’t remember the media ever being this brazen about the fact that they’re doing nothing more than reporting on rumors.
No one I work with has the slightest clue if there is any substance behind all this or not. The typical reaction is something like: well, Paterson is a pretty weird guy, so who knows.

…but I can’t remember the media ever being this brazen about the fact that they’re doing nothing more than reporting on rumors.
While the political wrangling over the ethics bill was going on, Paterson’s office continued to deny rumors that he could be forced to resign as a result of rumored scandals. A New York Post report on Jan. 30 stated Paterson was caught by state police in the mansion with a woman other than his wife. Paterson lashed out at that report, saying it was fabricated and the room in which he was reportedly caught doesn’t even exist. He denied all sexual relationships and drug use that are among the accusations.
__
“Rumors of resignation and scandal are just that — rumors. The governor has not engaged in any inappropriate or illegal behavior and suggestions to the contrary are entirely false and deeply irresponsible,” said Paterson spokeswoman Marissa Shorenstein.
Yes, AmericaBlog, this is probably Rahm’s fault too.

@licensed to kill time: Not remotely comparable. It’s entirely different when you have a breaking situation and the media is giving you the best information it has, with the understanding that it hasn’t been confirmed as yet. Here, the media has no firsthand sources at all, they’re just telling us what “other people” are speculating. You don’t have one person, named or unnamed, saying, “Here’s what the governor actually did wrong.”
23.
MattF
I get the feeling that the political class in NY just doesn’t like Patterson very much, don’t know if the voters also feel this way. Besides that, it’s kinda peculiar– going crazy with what everyone agrees are rumors. And if you read the NYT, none of this is happening, which is pretty funny.
24.
DougJ
The rumors are the ones I talked about yesterday.
Honestly, it pisses me off that all these places are saying “there’s something big” without mentioning what that big thing supposedly is. Just come out and say it’s rumors about the Aqueduct gaming contract and swinging.
A lot of is that the NYS Assembly — the heart of the state Democratic party — is pushing these rumors hard and (I think) really believes some version of the Aqueduct gaming rumors.

@licensed to kill time: OK, following NY politics is one of my guilty pleasures. There is an epic nastiness of Borgia proportions to it that makes Chicago look like amateur hour. Meh, the tabloid junkies will love it, it’ll get plenty of media attention because it’s NY and teh secks!, but all-in-all nothing will come out of this. It’s not Spitzer-level material with madames a knee-high black socks. A few articles said ‘state worker’ so some nobody secretary with low morals was putting in some ‘overtime’.
The Aqueduct thing, reportedly, was a contract given out to somebody for endorsements/donations etc., but there will never be any solid proof/smoking gun, so it’ll just be an annoying meme floating around for a while.

@J. Michael Neal: I think many would love to have Spitzer back-but his problem, which is true for anybody, is that you can’t fuck with the rich and powerful and have any sort of skeletons in your closet.
Right now the Lt. Gov is Richard Ravitch (I know nothing about him).
After that I believe it’s the AG (Cuomo), but I’m not sure, Doug would probably know.
BTW, Fuck Harold Ford. I hope a nest of African Termites infest his ballsack.
That said, the whisper campaign about the alleged bombshell is working perfectly. This whole thing is designed to get Paterson to drop out of the gubenatorial primary before Cuomo has to spend a dime running against him.
It’s actually very ugly, and anyone who thinks this isn’t the Dem Powers that Be and the NY Media gunning for Paterson’s drop-out is wrong. The only thing that’s surprising is that the “Harlem Clubhouse” is utterly silent on the matter.
BTW, if Paterson resigned and Ravitch took over and, God forbid, anything happened to Ravitch it would be Governor Espada.
I’m certain I saw this morning a report from a “real” news source that the NYT article was set to run tomorrow, and that Paterson would meet with the NYT’s editorial board about it today.
I tried to look around on Google News to find the article I’d seen, but after a few minutes realized I was trying to look for a cite on a claim that a newspaper had published a story that another newspaper was going to publish a story about a subject as of yet unknown, and realized it probably wasn’t worth it
The “bombshell” is allegedly coming tomorrow.

Patterson pretty much gave the metropolitan NYC area away today with his bullshit proposal to reweight the mass transit payroll tax so that the suburbs get hit for a much smaller bite than do city dwellers. News about who he is/might be screwing these days won’t matter one way or the other.
