Early Morning Open Thread

The last thread is getting too long to load, and my google-fu is not strong enough to retrieve a useable clip of the Olympic opening ceremonies. (Although if anyone wants to point me in the right direction — my email is at the top right of this page.) So you get the all-purpose feel-good post featuring…

HARP MUSIC!

and PUPPY!

(Commentor John O’s new puppy Dweezil)

Here’s for some good news this weekend…

    First! (Sorry.)

    I missed the Olympics; I went to Santa Cruz to catch Huun Huur Tu with Carmen Rizzo. Tuvan throat-singing blended with techno, sort of.

    What is it that isn’t sinking in about the late night OT being launched at 4-5-6am US time being ineffective?

    @John O, gorgeous puppy, hope you didn’t get any snot on him.

    @AL: Cue Rachel Maddow spoofing Hugo Chavez and his harp gimmick.

    Tomorrow, I set out on an epic artistic endeavor. I am going to watch the Hungarian epic masterpiece Satantango for the first time and in its entirety, all 7+ hours. The first shot of the movie is on youtube, and it is as mundane as it is intricate, methodical, and exciting.

    Something good has to come of it.

    @Angry Space Cadet:

    Nope, I have the same affliction so you ain’t alone.

    I am up late/early making my homemade cinnamon rolls for the wife and kids as a treat. I figure the wife will like one for breakfast and will take a pan to work to show off to share with her fellow wage slaves. She is taking the next week off and we are hoping for some clear weather so we can haul the motorcycle out and head up the coast for some fun. If the weather won’t cooperate then we’ll take the Mustang and do the same.

    We’re getting the winter itch and it’s time to scratch it. Today it’s supposed to be partly cloudy and around 60 out so I will be dragging the motorcycle out later on to clean and gas it up (plus a quick rip up the coastal highway to Humbug Mountain!).

    How’s your morning going?

    That puppeh is really adorable. And Dweezil, what a great name for him.

    I gave up on the Olympics thread not long after it hit the 300 mark. Too much for my BlackBerry to handle.

    There is snow everywhere and it’s lovely now in is early-morning crispness. But the roads are treacherous, so I’m just going to stay in until afternoon. Going back to sleep for a while, in fact, seems like a fine idea.

    (Yawn.) Later, y’all.

    I had horrible nightmares. I was being chased by a pink floating gumibear and Donald Southland kept trying to get me to smoke pot out of a big crystal bong-like apperatus and all the while Bob Costas was narrating and said, over and over, ‘just sayin’. I need coffee.

    Puppeh!

    I also call for good news. My friend is 41 weeks pregnant and would really like to not be so anymore. I also need her to have this baby, in that I’ll be the daycare, and my cats are taking over the bassinet. If that kid doesn’t get in there soon I’ll never be able to reclaim it. So good news in the form of uterine contractions would be welcome.

    John O, I guess you listened to the guy in the “rent-a-puppy” commercial and “got the lab”.

    But seriously, I don’t know if you had a lab before so I will give you a warning. They are most dangerous when happy. Their tails are lethal weapons able to inflict severe bruising on legs and remove any object, no matter its weight, from any low lying table.

    This photo gallery from the AJC is pretty amusing.

    projects.ajc.com/gallery/view/metro/atlanta/snow-atlanta-021210/

    I’m guessing that the Duke-Bucknell lacrosse game, which is supposed to be played in ATL this afternoon, is a casualty of the snow.

    Laettner celebrated Rivalry Week by going into heat. Mucho fun, which I mostly missed because I was in New York for work (me in the kind of trouble that only diamonds can fix). Caesar (140 lbs of lapdog) no likee. Caesar pee everywhere in house. Caesar banished to back yard. Kitteh wins!

    @Freemark:

    Freemark, everyone says “lab” when they see him, but the only thing we’re sure about is that his mom had some spaniel in her. The rest is just a guess. Seems like a good guess, but all in the litter from a high-kill shelter in KY looked pretty different from one another. His coat to me has winter dog traits, like Malamute or Husky or even Shepherd, as one of his sibs looked, but I don’t really care.

    He’s very good natured, no problems with the crate from day 1, and we’re doing hard core potty training this weekend.

    Plus, I’m one of those people who can’t get upset by happy dog damage!

  32. 32.

    John O

    February 13, 2010 at 9:23 am

    @Freemark:

    Freemark, everyone says “lab” when they see him, but the only thing known about his lineage is that mom had some spaniel. The litter (6) was rescued from a high-kill shelter in KY, and they all looked quite a bit different, including possibly shepherd, Malamute, Husky, which his coat has the feel of. It’s soft but thicker than most labs.

    I’m not one to get too excited about happy puppy damage, so that’s good, I guess.

    I lived in Atlanta for several years as a kid. I remember a couple of epic ice storms that had tree limbs and power lines snapping everywhere! Then there were the knuckleheads who insisted on driving at normal speeds on the hills. The towing companies will make killing hauling cars out of ditches.

    Spaying or neutering the kitties as soon as is possible helps to avoid the misery you describe. The howls they produce when in heat are just unbearable.

    @Robin G.: When I lived in Orlando, one of the radio teams had this tip for inducing labor that seemed to work for a lot of people.

    1. have the mom buy the blue box mac and cheese 2. the dad or partner or whomever needs to make the mac and cheese, while the mom relaxes 3. mom eats the mac and cheese with steak sauce on it (as much or little as is desired, as long as there is some).

    @WaterGirl: Heh. As I said above, I am helpless against the pleading look and thus cannot go to shelters. Chloe ambushed me at a pet adoption fair at the local Petco when I was shopping for cat food.

    Oddly enough, while I do sometimes yearn for a puppy, I can be happy with a snuggle and some puppy kisses before moving on. It’s the older dogs that break my heart and haunt me. I think that when our older cat goes, which may be a while since he’s 20 years old and still tussling with the 3 year old, I’d like to foster older dogs or cats for the shelter Chloe came from. But right now, we’re at our limit, pet-wise.

    (Said shelter is Second Chance: secondchancerescue.org/ and I really like the work they do. And just in case anyone in MN is looking, they’re having another adoption fair at the Petco in Roseville today.)
