So sad to hear the news. Daddy did a lot to rehabilitate the image of pit bulls in America. What a gorgeous and gentle beast he was.

I’d give anything to have 16 years with my dogs though. What a gift!

    RIP, Daddy.

The seriousness of the title doesn’t match the actual event, as much as I love dogs. Uncool. You’re going to give loyal readers a heart attack until that link fully loads.

Went to the Bergen Co (NJ) shelter yesterday to get a cat. Ended up getting two. Will post pix.

Also, am I the only one who calls John’s well-marbled cat, “Lunch”?

Christ, John. For a minute there I thought your father had died.
Well, this man has lost his best buddy, and for most of us that is losing a cherished friend.
Our dog, small white 2-year-old attention-seeking Bichon has a 1.5mm black bump on the side of her head we found this morning while bathing her. Off to the vet’s tomorrow, and a few prayers for my playmate would be appreciated.

@soonergrunt: I’ll be thinking of you! If it helps at all, a lot of times, those black bumps are just cysts, or masses of fatty tissue. Hope so much that it’s nothing to worry about.

I remember you saying Daddy was your favorite dog on Cesar’s show, John. He was a big ol’ sweetie pie, lumbering along all cool and unconcerned with those neurotic dogs he had to calm down. He just had “what? me worry?” in his body language.

I know there are folks here who take issue with the Dog Whisperer’s methods, but I have always felt that 90% of what Cesar does is train people. I think he is brilliant at that.

Hope Daddy will be chillin’ as usual in doggie heaven.

    Jesus Christ, Cole!

First I thought something personally horrible had happened, and was all “OMG, that’s so shitty, doubly so considering the whole I Bwoke My Bestest Arm incident.”

Then I thought, hang on, I don’t think Cole is likely to call his father ‘Daddy’, so why would…? OMG, that’s a fucked-up thing to call your former Drill-Sergeant, how embarassing for him. This should be funny.

Then I clicked on the link.

Then I came back here to roast your inconsiderate ass for putting me in a panic when I’m just about to retire to the big TV in the boudoir.

Then I saw the post was tagged Dog Blogging.

I feel silly now, Cole. And it’s your fault. Or it’s Rahm’s, or maybe Shrumm’s. I’ve lost track of who exactly is to blame, but I know someone is. And I like dogs.

    +5, BTW.

That’s sad but on the same site that John linked to I found this story

Last night at the end of Celebrity rehab it was revealed that Heidi Fleiss was in a car accident on her way back to Pahrump Nevada. On the show Fleiss left rehab early after a confrontation with a staff worker about her parrot. She was seen leaving in a blue Toyota, which later reportedly swerved off the road and crashed. Fleiss was not driving. VH1 tried to keep it under wraps until the air-date of their show but TMZ was able to sleuth out the story. Fleiss who is well known for being “The Hollywood Madam” has struggled with addition and been in and out of court for years. Its unknown if she will return to the Pasadena Recovery Center where the show is filmed and finish out her last week of rehab, you will have to watch next week to find out.

I bet there are several folks here that would be willing to tutor her in math.

I never watched the show, but I’m always sorry to hear of someone losing a beloved creature, human or otherwise.

The sweetest, most wonderful dog I have even met (aside from the one I grew up with, of course) was a pitbull named Kira (or maybe Kiri). I have never, but never, met a more loving, smart, happy, and inquisitive pooch. She seemed to be smiling all the time. I don’t have time or space in my life for a dog right now, but when I do, I will strongly consider getting a pit bull (after extensive study).

I hope my 2-year-old rescue pit bull, Budley, makes it to 16. I wouldn’t mind lasting that long too, in people years. They are a maligned breed alright. Budley, is actually an American Bull Terrier, the larger, taller breed. 75lbs. He’s just a big playful, likes everybody kind of dog. Uses his nose for everything, including nudging me along from behind and especially nudging on shopping bags filled with shoppings. “What’s in it for me?” RIP, Daddy

I *love* Cesar’s show. I never felt a particular attachment to Daddy, but my heart breaks for Cesar. I guess it sounds morbid, but I hope he does a show on grieving for a pet.

Not so much for people whose pet’s have died, but for people who can’t understand pet owners grieving for the loss of their beloved pets.

I realize it is too much to ask. Cesar is such a warm, communicative person, so it seems like if anyone could help the pet-love unimpressed it would be Cesar.

RIP in piece Daddy. Thanks for being with us.

    Common Sense

    February 21, 2010 at 3:52 pm

I’ve owned several breeds, including many that are (rightly) considered people friendly, such as a labrador and a golden retriever. I am currently doting on a boxer/pit mix (I think — she was a rescue dog and completely deaf when I found her). I have never had a dog that was sweeter and more eager to please. She completely changed my view on pit bulls, along with her playmate, a pure bred Razor’s Edge. They are not for the lazy, and require a ton of exercise, but the rewards are immeasurable.

Good luck! Taking her to the vet right away is definitely the best call. We waited too long with our cat Natasha (though, to be fair, breast cancer is very malignant in cats and we probably couldn’t have bought more than a couple of extra months even if we had taken her in right away). As others said, fatty deposits are very common in dogs, so hopefully it’s something as simple as that.

One of my friends at work just lost a pet that she loved very much, but people don’t really get it because her pet was an iguana. I say, a pet is a pet and if you’ve had that iguana for 16 years, you’re going to be attached to it even if it’s not the “right” kind of pet.

    Thanks to all. Really.
My daughter got Melody for a present when she was 8 weeks old. She’s a lot of fun and extremely smart. I wanted something a little more masculine like an Alaskan Wolf or something, but when the decision is left in the hands of the 9-year-old daughter, you get the small white fuzzy thing and not the large imposing Walking Testosterone Booster. It took me about five seconds to fall in love, so it’s all good.
I’m sure it’s nothing, but I’m not taking any chances.

That is sad, but 16 is an awesome age for a dog, particularly a rescue one.

I frankly do not understand the way people bash Cesar, when he has an accessible and sensible approach to dog training that most people can grasp, even if they need practice implementing.

His point about training people is spot on.
