For some reason, Comcast has decided I do not need half of my channels, including all of the ones with the Olympics. I do have Sci-Fi, though, and was wondering if anyone had seen Beyond Sherwood Forest.
Also, here is another open thread.

Another one bites the dust. Wow, with all these Republican retirements, how are the Dems going to hold those seats?
Incertus (Brian)
I have not, but if it’s on SyFy and original, there’s a 90% chance it will be epically bad, which means it might be worth watching.
And if anyone’s interested in some inside baseball sort of talk about poetry, here’s a piece I wrote about the current state of publishing for The Rumpus (though the link is to my site).
General Egali Tarian Stuck
NBC has ruined the Olympics for me. It just isn’t the same watching replays of events that happened hours earlier. Specially the skiing events that I like most. And dish network is carrying three separate special channels, that are of course controlled by NBC and are nothing but fluff pieces on the athletes and not live events. Blerg indeed. About the only thing I’ve watched live are Hockey and Curling, sports I know nothing about and don’t really like to watch that much.
But there is a great show I found on netflix instant of a series called Kidnapped that ran for one season a few years ago. Topnotch drama and teevee action. 19 episodes and I’m starting number 4 tonight.
I have been so drab the past week. Don’t care about politics or much else. Not uncommon for this time of year though. Ready for spring and warmer weather. And of course Base-A-Ball.

@RedKitten: For an unannounced sudden retirement? Something definitely smells fishy here. It’s a solid Republican district so I doubt it will flip, however if they find the right person it could still be used as a money sponge in a cycle where the Republicans are hurting for cash.

LOL. Did you ever see “Alien Apocalypse“?
cmorenc
@General Egali Tarian Stuck
Agree totally.
Among NBC’s many Winter Olympic coverage atrocities, one of the more egregious has been the time stolen from the athletes and diverted to Mary Perillo’s irrelevant junkets to e.g. visit Polar Bears, or train with the Canadian Mounties. Don’t get me wrong – as mini-documentary “60 minutes” style pieces shown at completely another time, they’d be just fine. However, when intercut with (and subtracting time available to show) Olympic competitive events themselves, it demonstrates that the idiotic jackass producers at NBC think: a) the athletic competition is incapable of holding our sustained interest without these completely tangential segues to bait us to stay tuned in; AND b) the athletic competition isn’t compelling or important enough to hold viewer interest on its own, without throwing all these puff pieces in there every 15 minutes.
Jeez, I wish the IOC would take a page from the organizers of the Masters Golf Tournament in Augusta every April…regardless of whether golf has any interest for you, you have to admire how tightly they REQUIRE the focus to stay on the golf competition. Limited commercials, no cutaways for “puff pieces” on the golfer’s kids and dogs, no cutaways about side junkets the announcers took to Stone Mountain, Georgia…just…the highest-level golf, start to finish. The IOC should make similar requirements on whatever network gets rights to broadcast the Olympics.
These jackasses think their show is more important than the athletes. When a network’s golf coverage is vastly superior to their Olympics coverage, they need to do some serious rethinking about how they go about showing the Olympics.

The worst teevee show in history was aired by SyFy and was called Lexx. I am certain it caused permanent brain damage and was why I switched packages in hopes not getting Scifi would erase that nightmare from my neural net. Comcast (soon to be called Xfinity, which always makes me think of Xe) is moving Comedy Central to the digital-only channel range in my market next month. I will most likely be dropping my cable TV service when that happens.
They’ve also started using this godawful “Domain Helper Service” on their cable internet service, which is really just a way of hijacking the usual URL auto-complete behavior of my web browser so when I type “amazon” it doesn’t just take me to “amazon.com”, but instead takes me to an ad-filled search page that asks if I really meant “amazon.com”. I’ve opted out of the service, but I’m seriously considering switching to a new ISP if this is the sort of crap they are going to pull.

@demimondian: I may have to pay more attention during this recess and see if any more retirements start cropping up. Even in safe districts that’s still a big money sink for the national party because odds are the contest will be starting from scratch and will have little to no fundraising done. And with Steele giving the RNC fits over his spending it could get very interesting if a close contest needs cash and they can’t spare the funds.
BTW Finns are dominating on shots on goal so far. Mostly a lot of slapping the puck around and Slovakia let a power play get by them without capitalizing.

I just read this article at the NY Times.
For Buyout Kingpins, the TXU Utility Deal Gets Tricky
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/28/business/energy-environment/28txu.html?hpw
Back when I was a paralegal working in utilities regulation I learned a lot about utilities and the economics of the sector. This deal is a perfect example of the financialization of the US economy and why were in the trouble we are in. No way was this deal going to work out for investors and the company down the road — just too much fucking debt and the only people who made out and made profits were the bankers, the hedge funds and the lawyers in dreaming up the deal and implementing it. Greed, lots of greed was present. /rant over

The earthquake reminded me of this book I read a couple years ago, A Short History of Nearly Everything. The two things that stuck out for me from the book:
1) Yellowstone is actually a supervolcano that could blow anytime; and
2) Tokyo is on three plates and it is inevitable that there will be a huge earthquake there killing god knows how many people.
The whole book isn’t that depressing and I highly recommend it.

I am really glad my city started our own cable/Internet service. Smoking fast Internet and a great channel lineup for a reasonable price. The main competition here is Cox and I am so glad I switched. Yes, the Yellowstone caldera is still active, and, yes, someday (in the near future, geologically speaking) it will blow, covering the western half of the United States and Canada with white-hot pyroclasm, incinerating everything in its wake and asphyxiating everything it can’t scorch. HOWEVER (and it’s a big however) the crater will first need to refill before any of that Hot Volcanic Action can take place. So we will actually have adequate warning.

Anyone watching Caprica? I decided not to get hopelessly lost like I did with BSG and so far (Up through episode 4) I am enjoying it. 1) Our household loved Lexx. Silly plot, but great looking females for spouse and Macolm McDowell for me. Great Art Direction.
2) Bruce Campbell is a god. If you haven’t seen Bubba Hotep, DO IT NOW!
3) If you want to see Robin Hood, rent the DVDs from the 1980’s Legend. Yes, bad 80’s hair, but great performance by Ray Winstone as Will Scarlett and sound track by Clannah.
4) Tin Man was okay (spouse likes Zooey D), but Alice was teh awful. Sci Fi has gone downhill since they did Dune and showed FarScape.
5) Always watch Ed Wood Movies via MST3K. My favorite MST3K is not an Ed Wood, but rather Manos the Hands of Fate, which is a classic of the American silly cinema.

Lexx is basically a sarcastic, half-assed Farscape on acid; with worse actors, fewer muppets, and a lot more gratuitous nudity (though the jack-booted prudes of “Syfy” censor it). The viewing experience is significantly improved by being mildly stoned and in the company of copious gigglers.

There is one ad I keep seeing on TV during the Olympics that is driving me nuts. It is Chris Matthews congratulating himself on being teh awesome:
Does anyone know how I can get this channel? Because this is not the version of Hardball that I see on regular MSNBC. In fact, I quit watching Hardball because it is like the opposite of shaking anybody up. Yeah, occasionally Tweety will go all schnauzer on somebody’s pants leg when they get his dander up, but that is erratic, rare and not usually related to anything substantive. And when does he “work toward” anything? Usually he’s talking over or interrupting the person’s answer, or else he lets the most bullshit assertions just float on by with nary a grumble. So when does he ever “catch” anyone? Ugh.
EL
I am sad tonight and am inflicting it on fellow Balloon Juicers.
I started 2009 with two cats that I’ve had since 2000. One died of cancer December 14th. The other stopped eating a few days ago, and was discovered to have advanced lymphoma. I held her while they put her to sleep today.
It’s the first time in a decade I’ve been without a cat. Pictures of Tunch and others will have to sustain me until I’m ready to go to the shelter and find another.
Give all your cats out there an extra pet or two for me. And then send the purrs my way.
Yutsano
@wmsheppa: It’s probably a good thing for Finland that this is the last game they play, because they can’t do power plays to save their skins. It’s not even Slovakia defends them well: they just don’t seem to get the concept of using superior numbers to get the goalie to commit to an error. I wonder if that had anything to do with the Us whupping them so easily. But for pure physicality and excitement this one has been a helluva game.
@EL: warmest wishes to you in your time of loss. I’ll scritch both my kittehs tonight for you (they both sleep with me) and hopefully you’ll find a new dear soon.
Steeplejack

It’s too late now–I got home late from work–but, seriously, any channel-guide blurb that reads “The Sheriff of Nottingham uses a shape-shifting monster to destroy Robin Hood” is a pretty clear indicator of whether you should watch the program. You should not. The only exception would be if this were an episode of Dr. Who.
wmsheppa
@Yutsano: Looks pretty intense so far. Honestly I thought what killed the Finns against the US was their PK/Defense/Goaltending/lack of physicality. I’m glad that they’ve been playing a physical game, and that they went back to Kipper. He’s a better goalie than he played last night. Then again, so is the entire Finnish team… glad to see the loss didn’t destroy them.

Olympics: Yeah, fucking sucks. The coverage. I hate all the jumping back and forth. I hate the fact that if I see seven people in an event, I know that three of them are the medalists, and the other four are Americans/Canadians/hard luck stories. At least I can watch five hours of coverage in an hour or so. Still.
@EL: I am so sorry to hear about your loss. My deepest condolences to you. It’s so hard to lose a loved one, and to have lost two in such a short span of time is heartbreaking. I hope they check in on you from time to time to make sure you’re doing ok. I will give my boys extra-love for your missing friends tonight.
@Incertus (Brian): Awwwww, sniff sniff. That’s a heartwarming story and Gladys sounds like one heck of a kittie. She’s a cutie, too. Good on you for taking her in.

@Yutsano: They really do not put the ‘A’ team on any broadcast that starts after 7 eastern or so. Still, not as bad as Milbury’s eurotrash comment following the Russia/Canada game.

Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: Somehow I highly doubt they’d be doing this if the US weren’t in the gold medal round. But I just think it’s my cynicism coupled with the ass coverage so far.
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: Well, no shit. But, I read they also got a shit-load of criticism for showing the…semis? Quarterfinals? One other important US game on tape-delay in the West, especially as they streamed it live online. So, they learned a little bit. I would have liked being able to watch the women’s finals, though. Harumph.
wmsheppa
@asiangrrlMN: Yeah, next thing you know they’ll be acting like hockey is a real sport that NBC sponsors year round! Because they show ice dancing every weekend…
@Yutsano: They actually said coming into the games that ‘the medal round would have broadcasting flexibility’ for men’s hockey… translation, if the US is playing, it may get on NBC!

@asiangrrlMN: Ice dancing is NOT figure skating! They are two totally different animals that only share a style of skate.
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: No shit. Especially in the days of the internets when results are instantaneous.

wmsheppa
@asiangrrlMN: One day hockey and curling will get the respect they deserve… until then, we’ll be stuck watching them on MSNBC and shooting daggers at the jackasses who think that a Russian couple in aboriginal costumes is better for their ratings.
The sad part? They’re probably right. Does this say more bad things about the US or about NBC? I’m not really sure.
PTirebiter
@PurpleGirl: And it all started with the underpants gnomes of deregulation. TU Electric, now TXU, was a great company when I moved here in ’91. But the rates have never been lower, wait strike that, no savings were ever realized.
asiangrrlMN

asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: To quote Steeplejack, political punditry is not for the faint of heart.
@wmsheppa: Well, we will never know, will we? They keep saying that bullshit, but they never test it. Seriously. I would like them to show one curling competition just to see what kind of ratings it would get.
Don’t get me started on the ‘ethnic’ ice dances–don’t even.
@PTirebiter: 36 hours? That’s outrageous. But, yeah, who needs regulation? Free market, bitchez!
Yutsano
@PTirebiter: I live in a fairly Republican area. About five years back or so they proposed privatizing the public utilities here. The backlash was so severe that no one dares propose messing with the PUDs here at all. They are also efficient and responsive when things go wrong.
