Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires

I’d try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

I was promised a recession.

Bark louder, little dog.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

He really is that stupid.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

Some judge needs to shut this circus down soon.

    Ugh, man…

So I woke up this morning and realized that I had intended to brew a new batch of beer over the weekend, and that if I failed to do that, my ingredients would really start to go bad. So…kinda stuck tending the pot instead of being able to watch Chuck.

    DVR’d. But do enjoy.

For some reason, I’ve been overcome by an uncontrollable urge to listen to the “Field of Dreams” soundtrack. I don’t know why, but that movie–and its music–has felt almost preternaturally sublime to me since I was a kid. Definitely James Horner’s best work.

I think it’s less the Olympics, and more the sense that one HAS to pay attention, one HAS to be all up in whatever this athletic freak of nature can or cannot do. One cannot escape it to save one’s life.

Dems REALLY, REALLY, REALLY need to worry about November. The G(NO)P keeps hammering home just how much they LOVE us. First Senator Warm Fuzzy Bunny giving 400,000 unemployed people the finger- what next, Mitch McConnell and John Boehner strolling by the unemployment office in silk suits yelling: “GET A JOB!!!”. Let’s try “Let Them Eat Cake” for our campaign slogan while we’re at it.

Tell me about it. I live in Toronto and have been patiently trying to explain to people that yesterday’s hockey game does not in fact validate their collective existence. It’s been tough slogging.

I’ve also had to argue with a lot of people using the “Olympics are all about the hard-working athletes struggling for years to pursue their dreams” line – after their biggest and most enthusiastic celebration came in support of a bunch of big-shot NHLers winning a game against another bunch of big-shot NHLers.

I remember having to rcord the weather along with sales figures in a big ole ledger book when I worked for a B. Dalton Bookseller. Considering we were in an enclosed mall and nowhere near any outside doors, it was an ‘educated guess’ most days. It was also Florida, so clear and sunny was a safe fallback. We could usually hear the hard thunderstorms on the roof anyway.
