Chuck Open Thread by John Cole| March 1, 20107:55 pm| 81 CommentsThis post is in: TelevisionFacebookTweetEmailThank goodness the Olympics are over.
Chuck? Never heard of it.
Operation Repo, bitches.
I’ll miss the Olympics but I’m glad that Chuck is back. After reading Ford’s Op-ed piece in the NYTimes, I need to watch something that is based in reality.
In case it hasn’t already been noted: R.I.P. T-Bone Wolk, a wonderful musician and by all accounts a fine and gentle soul.
YAY Chuck! Boooo televised meeting. Unfortunately, teh electorate won’t edycate themselves, so I’m stuck in a broadcast booth.
Cole’s watching network TV while his Mountaineers are on ESPN? What kinda team loyalty is that?
So I woke up this morning and realized that I had intended to brew a new batch of beer over the weekend, and that if I failed to do that, my ingredients would really start to go bad. So…kinda stuck tending the pot instead of being able to watch Chuck.
DVR’d. But do enjoy.
I’m gonna miss the Olympics.
@Face: Picture in picture, Face. Welcome to 1994.
For some reason, I’ve been overcome by an uncontrollable urge to listen to the “Field of Dreams” soundtrack. I don’t know why, but that movie–and its music–has felt almost preternaturally sublime to me since I was a kid. Definitely James Horner’s best work.
Oh woe is me, this this this.
I haz a sad.
A song for Casimir Pulaski day. Sad and beautiful.
@John Cole: Coming from a guy who cant figure out how to get CBS? Too funny.
God damn does Georgetown look abysmal. Big East tourney gunna be a blast to watch.
Thanks for the reminder. My wife’s dad was named Casimir.
Lady Smudge, resting happily on my chest. Her reaction to being home has been the opposite of what I imagined. Very sanguine, almost at peace. Of course, I’m still awake, so there’s that…
Chuck’s Adam Baldwin is a big right winger. He writes for Breitbart’s Big Hollywood
anti-HCR, etc: http://twitter.com/AdamSBaldwin
Link Fu fail.
Casimir Pulaski Day.
Me and 13 sporting pals are already making plans to attend the Sochi games.
Just Some Fuckhead
My thoughts exactly. When Obama gets thrown out in 2012, Canadians will only have themselves to blame for not allowing America to be proud again.
I’ve been trying to work out why I barely tolerate the fact that the Olympics rear their heads every two years.
I think it’s less the Olympics, and more the sense that one HAS to pay attention, one HAS to be all up in whatever this athletic freak of nature can or cannot do. One cannot escape it to save one’s life.
I am a grump, it turns out.
PS Don’t tell my sister. She loooooooooves the Olympics and does not suspect me….
GET A JOB!!!
Dems REALLY, REALLY, REALLY need to worry about November. The G(NO)P keeps hammering home just how much they LOVE us. First Senator Warm Fuzzy Bunny giving 400,000 unemployed people the finger- what next, Mitch McConnell and John Boehner strolling by the unemployment office in silk suits yelling: “GET A JOB!!!”. Let’s try “Let Them Eat Cake” for our campaign slogan while we’re at it.
Stuffed I am.
Reason Ford is not running for Senate (lie): He doesn’t want to weaken the Democratic candidate.
Reason Ford is not running for Senate (truth): He made more mistakes in one interview than most politicians make in an entire lifetime.
To quote Dutch in Predator: “Run! Get to da Chawpa!”
Am I the only one who thinks that this Chuck is hilarious with or without Baldwin.
And I honestly don’t give a sweet shit about Adam Baldwin’s politics, religion, favourite recipes or choice of underwear. I just enjoy the man as an actor.
Tonight’s ep is pretty awesome so far. (SPOILER) That bit of impromptu dentistry — I couldn’t believe he did that!
JMC in the ATL
Ugh. It took me a baffled minute of trying to figure out why people were excited about the return of Chuck Todd to our television screens to figure it out…
Kinda amusing how so many of the tough guys in hollywood who’ve been playing slightly manic one note heavies are ….slightly manic one note wingnuts.
I thought h’wood was full of toxic liberals who were keeping the honest god fearing conservatives down.
Emo Pantload (fka Studly)
I’m a House of Sand and Fog man, myself, but in all fairness, I haven’t given FOD a listen, yet.
So far as the Olympics, I’m gonna miss me some curling (and not just the ladies’ curling — well, OK, maybe somewhat more). But I’m thrilled that there’s a two-hour Law & Order, tonight. Damages, meanwhile, will be getting DVR’d for immediate viewing afterward. In other words, big drama in the Pantload household, tonight!
Yes, we know. No one’s perfect, and as long as he’s not running for office …
Plus it helps that the show essentially mocks his Reagan fixation.
Yeah, that pretty much describes Baldwin’s character in Firefly/Serenity.
I don’t watch Chuck*, so I can’t comment on that.
*I don’t watch television at all – DVDs from the library is the only way tv set is used
Is anybody excited for “Parenthood” tomorrow night? I’ve only seen a couple of commercials for it, but apparently, chubby balding guys like Mike O’Malley can get with hot ones like Lauren Graham. And since television never lies…
Tell me about it. I live in Toronto and have been patiently trying to explain to people that yesterday’s hockey game does not in fact validate their collective existence. It’s been tough slogging.
I’ve also had to argue with a lot of people using the “Olympics are all about the hard-working athletes struggling for years to pursue their dreams” line – after their biggest and most enthusiastic celebration came in support of a bunch of big-shot NHLers winning a game against another bunch of big-shot NHLers.
Dweezil is getting a little sneakier and bolder. It’s very fun to watch.
He’s going to miss Stella a lot.
The White House is pre-emptively blaming winter for the unexpectedly bad upcoming employment release on Friday.
It’s kinda like Jimmy Carter’s second term.
Emo Pantload (fka Studly)
Yeah, I’m of the mind that if I selected what I watched or listened to by whether any of the primary participants is a right-winger or just a plain ol’ arsehole, I wouldn’t get much watchin’ or listenin’ done.
@RedKitten: “Because I like cupcakes, that’s why!”
Just because it’s stupid to mention politically doesn’t mean it isn’t at least a bit true.
@John Cole: LOL! I loved that bit.
“I take pride in my work. I want to be the one who kills him, not some secondary infection.”
Why is this bad? Lots of people have been saying it has a negative effect. Take a look at what Brad DeLong, Dean Baker, and Flyod Norris have said about it. I’d rather the White House get out in front of this now rather than later.
The Global Warming Denialists are gonna have a field day with that one.
The guy on Chuck is Adam Baldwin, he is not related to the Baldwin brothers.
The born-again evangelical Republican Baldwin is Stephen. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Baldwin

No more women speed skaters, or biathletes*. Fortunately, I still have some on the DVR, including the only game they showed of Moe’s.
*”Bi” as in skiing and shooting. Get your mind out of the gutter.
@San: Yes, we know. But Adam is a wingnut, too.
We just live with it, and don’t think about it too much.
@Phil: Dude, I work in retail real estate and the weather had substantial impact on our properties and retail sales in general.
Think about the days the malls were closed in the DC area during the storm. That hurt the retailers and will have impact on the YoY numbers.
It’s why we always log weather conditions from one Black Friday to another.
@Phil: So, the blogs conclusion is that a slowdown in spending because there are fewer shoppers is a ridiculous excuse for businesses to not hire, but I’d be willing to bet that tax cuts allowing businesses to keep more of their profits would be the perfect stimulus to creating jobs.
Honestly? I will run interference for anyone who can quote the original Predator to me.
Hold up a second…I need to adjust my pen1s to reflect my CHL business.
@Max: But that’s important when a white Republican is in office, not a black Soc!alist. When there’s a Dem in the White House, you’re just making excuses for failed policies.
Don’t care about Baldwin’s politics. He is so funny. Like him in Chuck, and his Jayne was hi-larious. Although Wash is my favorite…
@J. Michael Neal: We here are all pretty clear that you are one sick honky mofo.
South of I-10
I just learned that among the other important programs Bunning allowed to lapse is the National Flood Insurance Program. It seems to me that when half of Louisiana can’t close on a house, even the wingnuts might get a bit annoyed. I sure hope no policies renewed March 1. We are supposed to get a lot of rain tonight.
@Martin: Ah, you are correct sir. I forgot the GVB caveat.
*governing while black
Is it me, or has Candy Crowley’s neck lost weight?
Edited to add: Mitch McConnell is a fucking asshole.
I remember having to rcord the weather along with sales figures in a big ole ledger book when I worked for a B. Dalton Bookseller. Considering we were in an enclosed mall and nowhere near any outside doors, it was an ‘educated guess’ most days. It was also Florida, so clear and sunny was a safe fallback. We could usually hear the hard thunderstorms on the roof anyway.
@South of I-10: Not just Louisiana, but anyone within probably 50 miles of the Mississippi or any of it’s major tributaries. I just found that 12% of South Carolina homes are covered by the program.
If one home in 8 can’t close, that’s pretty huge.
@John O: Thanks, Dweezil’s found home.
J. Michael Neal
@Corner Stone: Yeah, like that makes me unusual around here.
While you’re at it, what color is the sky? Who is buried in Grant’s Tomb? Is Michael Moore fat?
@South of I-10:
Are we sure ACORN isn’t to blame for this?
ZOMG, I wish I didn’t know that :)
Well, I got some bad news today. After bravely struggling, after 2 dialysis operations and antibiotics, my grandfather passed away to the next world. We asked a lot of a 100 year old man, and he did the best he could but in the end he had no more energy.
He had a good life. No regrets.
Yes. He’s a happy little dog.
And I’m a very happy daddy.
Cain, sorry that you’ve lost someone that special. But really, what a way to go, with no regrets.
Yeah, I knew it was an obvious thing to say, but then I decided: You know what? You can never say often enough that Mitch McConnell is fucking asshole.
You just can’t. It’s one of those things that never gets tired and never gets old! Like Juju Mints!
My condolences on your loss, Cain.
Olympics? That was the worst coverage of the Olympics I ever saw and I have watched a lot of them. Their flipping back and forth to events was disgusting. As were the commentaries and interviews when there were competitions going on. I hope NBC never covers them again. BTW, first time I did not watch the closing ceremony of an Olympics.
What I enjoyed most was seeing Vancouver. It is awesome.
Did anyone see this new meme “Obama doesn’t know how insurance works”?
@Splitting Image: Well, hmmm. So I don’t know if I should tell you what this American said to her husband upon learning that Canada had taken the gold (“oh, good!”).
My family has figured out, however, that in spite of a lifetime of effort, I really only care about the Cubs insofar as the Cubs make said family happy or sad.
If my family were to see the light and stop caring, I would be that much happier.
He is also one of the Quarians in Mass Effect 2; one of the Marines you encounter, I think…
The ads for Parenthood have been creeping me out. Ron Howard and Brian Grazer feel like they’re really straining and overselling it. And how is it a good ad to have the two producers sitting there telling you, “Yeah, it’s good. You should watch it”? It makes me feel like putting it on my “to don’t” list (h/t Psych).
@Cain: Oh my. All my sympathies, cain. I’m at the edge of saying goodbye to a younger man who has been like a father to me. He, too, has had a good life, and is at peace with his imminent passing. I wish we could get a few more years.
Thinking of you and your family.
Emo Pantload (fka Studly)
Condolences. Glad you seem to have found some solace.
Where is Stella going?
Home, SJ. I’m just sitting for Stella, for my nephew. They’re driving back to Chicago via GA from AZ for vacation as I type. I had committed to the dog-sitting before I got the pup.
Crap. I was trying to put 2 teaspoons of chili powder into my chicken chili, shook the bottle too hard, and ended up with something closer to two tablespoons.
Hopefully it will still be edible because that was my last chicken breast.
Mike in NC
They did an episode of “Chuck” that spoofed his pathetic Reagan-love. Maybe the (not-related) Baldwins can team up with Voight, Hopper, Grammer and the rest of the Hollywood wingnuts and gift us with “American Carol 2”.
And bingo!, Drudge is on the job!
Why can I not resist looking at Drudge? What is wrong with me?
Ah. I had thought Dweezil was an addition to the (dog) family, not the only one. I bet he will be sorry to see her go. They get along so well in the videos.
South of I-10
@Martin: I have flood insurance, although I am “Zone X” and I’m not required to carry it. I just can’t imagine the nightmare if you were supposed to close this week and couldn’t because of this.
@Brian J: ACORN is to blame for everything!
Can I post?
Dweezil is going to suffer a bit emotionally, SJ.
More or less a key stage for daddy to step up.
hopefully, last test post.
