Off to the doctor to see if I can remove the brace. Woo.
Also, I don’t think enough of you fully appreciated (or even noticed, for that matter) what DougJ did with the title to his post last night. We’re not worthy.

I spotted it immediately but was in the middle of fixing food, so I didn’t take the time for the kudos last night.
jlo
I only got it this morning. Brilliant.
russell
was scotty baio involved?
Svensker
I’m not worthy because I’m not getting it. Please someone explain it to the dumb kid in the back.
Steeplejack
@Svensker:
“Cronies love tchotchkes.” Joanie Loves Chachi. Dismally bad Scott Baio series from the early ’80s. If you were watching MTV–and this was when MTV actually played music videos–you probably missed it.

The man’s a genius.
Max
I’m headed to the airport to fly to Portland for a job interview. Fingers crossed for Maxy.
Steeplejack
@Max:
Good luck! And I hope it’s Portland, OR, not Portland, ME. Just sayin’. (Apologies to any Mainiacs here.)

We’re not all on prescription painkillers, John, even though Doug was quite clever. ;)
Good luck at the doc.

Why is Taylor Marsh defending Palin? Is she a PUMA?

@Max: Danny the Wheaten Terror wishes you good luck on your job interview (as do I).
Napoleon
@Steeplejack:
Oh, now I get it.
Chat Noir
@Steeplejack: Excellent analogy. Thanks for sharing.
Mr Furious
Both Portland’s are cool by me.
(Well, not Connecticut’s)
Good luck, Max!

Moron here who didn’t get the DougJ joke until it was spelled out for me…

Good luck Max! Another 60 degree day here…I’m so happy.

He was kicked around in the comments…

Portland, OR (well, Vancouver, WA actually).
Thanks for the well wishes. Especially the wheaten wishes. Max the wheaten is dead asleep on the couch and very unsympathetic to the cause.
I hate putting on the interview suit. Women’s suits never look good. I’m a separates kind of girl.
Comrade javafascist
Best of luck John! And yes, Doug is brilliant especially to us 40 something losers that remember that god awful excuse for a television series which appeared at a time when choices to switch to other god awful tv series were decidedly limited. Tell the kids today that, and they won’t believe you. Get off my lawn. Also.

@Max: sending good thoughts from east central Illinois! I always enjoy your comments, Max —
and John! hope the brace comes off!!!
A Mom Anon
@Max: Good Luck Max,and I totally agree w/you on the women’s suit thing. Unless you can afford expensive custom tailoring,most of that stuff fits women with curves about as well as a trash bag.
Steeplejack
Cole:
Good luck with the brace. However, if it comes off, do not take that as carte blanche to immediately return to your former vigorous lifestyle. It’s a gradual process, and the brace coming off is not an end point.

GOOD LUCK MAX!

Agreed. In a just world he could make a good living writing post titles only.

@Max:
I’m not a fan of suits either. Most just make me look like a large rectangle. Unfortunately the wrap dress (my best article of clothing) does not tend to translate well into interview-wear.
Ash Can
@PeakVT: LOL! Been there, done that!

@Max:
I hear ya. But I’m sure you look smashing.
Break a leg!! You’ll do great!!

Texas primary turnout… highest in 20 years. Which pretty much exposes your newest pee-on as a liar, Cole.
Xenos
@Steeplejack: IIRC, Joanie/Chachi was the third and least successful of the Happy Days spinoffs, the others being ‘Laverne and Shirley’ and ‘Mork from Ork’ or whatever it was called. There may have been others…
PTirebiter
My apologies to Mr. DougJ. It was brilliant, it was late and I’m not worthy.

@Ed in NJ:
What the hell is an “Oscar Gift Suite” anyway?
PHinSD
I’ve been lurking here for a long while, but what brought me out of the woodwork today is a typo I noticed on slide 10 of yesterday’s RNC document. According to the 1st bullet “In 2009, the RNC raised a total of $81,225,000 million.” Since their next claim is “The average RNC donor contribution was less than $40…” and $81.225 million million (or $81,220,000,000,000) is a really big number, the RNC may have already taken over the world and resistance is futile. (I blame Rahm.)

I was chuckling all evening over that title. The laughter abruptly stopped when I tried to explain it to my teenager.
I’ve decided that growing older bites.
But the title was truly inspired.
Kay Shawn
“Come on without” was purty darn good, too. Was that Dougj?
Chinn Romney
Major bummer.
I haven’t seen this mentioned here yet. Actually I think it deserves a thread of its own:

A watering hole for professional grifters – and Palin appears to be the queen grifter.

@Chinn Romney:
2 threads already about this
@gnomedad:
The gift suite is where celebrities help themselves to all sorts of free swag, as if they needed it. Jewelry, high end cosmetics, electronics, etc. The stuff of normal working-class hockey moms.
According to the article I linked, Palin forced them to open the suite 2 hours early and with an entourage of 20 or so, including her daughters, proceeded to clean them out.
Brachiator
Best of luck to you with this.
Funny, I didn’t notice it yesterday, but it hit me immediately when I scanned the threads this morning.
Meanwhile, in another part of the forest, Republicans continue to do what they do best, getting caught with their hypocritical pants down. Family values, also too.
Ashburn, a father of four, is a Republican Senator representing parts of Kern, Tulare and San Bernardino Counties with a history of opposing gay rights.
Mnemosyne
@PeakVT:
I’ve seen that look on Keaton’s face many a time when the kittens decide to tackle him.
@Brachiator:
Fun fact: When gay marriage was legalized by the California Supreme Court, Kern County stopped having courthouse marriages at all rather than allow teh ghey to infect their employees. Kern County is full of assholes.
Tom Hilton
I didn’t get it until you pointed it out. All I noticed was that ‘tchotchkes’ was misspelled (or rather, not transliterated in the way to which I’m accustomed).
@Pasquinade: she was one of the more vituperative anti-Obama/pro-Clinton voices during the primaries, but she didn’t drink the PUMA Flavor-Ade in the general or afterwards. Still, I’m guessing that attacks on Palin are somehow triggering flashbacks for her.
Steeplejack
@Xenos:
You are correct. And thanks for reminding me of those apocalyptical drought years that were ’80s television. Really.
russell
Actually, Portland ME is a pretty cool small city. Great museum, very good opera company, good live music and clubs, good food. Nice place to live, fun place to visit.
Just saying.
Good luck Max!!
Good luck John!!
Steeplejack
@russell:
Not dissing Portland, ME, so much as expressing a preference for Portland, OR.
gogol's wife
@Steeplejack:
There’s nothing wrong with Portland, CT, either (comment way up at the top).
Svensker
@Steeplejack:
Ahhh. Thank you. Never watched MTV.
MTV doesn’t do music videos now? What do they do instead?
licensed to kill time
@Svensker: “Reality” tv. I was there when the very first video was played on MTV and we were all excited about it (though there was the usual concern about video images replacing our fertile imagination) and it still seems like a good idea, though I guess YouTube has pretty well replaced MTV.
I haven’t watched MTV in years, FWIW. And somehow “Joanie Loves Chachie” sailed right over my head as well.
ETA – DougJ and his titles are fucking brilliant, whether I get them or not!
Steeplejack
@Svensker:
Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! Oh, you lovable, naïve bastard. An occasional music video program still slips in, but now they’re all about mining the dregs of disposable pop culture. And not even real pop culture–it’s weird, corporate-lab-spawned fake pop culture. Cf.:
– The Real World: Six or eight unstable, self-absorbed young people live together in one house–hilarity ensues.
– MTV Cribs: Plush residences of hip-hop royalty. Poster art from Scarface mandatory.
– Jersey Shore: Guidos at the beach. See The Real World above.
– Sixteen and Pregnant: Self-explanatory.
– Taking the Stage: Everyone
wantsdeserves to be a star.– Dance Crew: Ditto.
God, I can’t believe I know this much about a channel I don’t even watch. Shoot me now.
Quicksand
Heh, and you didn’t even mention The Hills, The City, Laguna Beach, etc.
MTV would deserve our scorn simply for springing Speidi upon an unsuspecting world. Even if everything else were top-shelf. Which it ain’t.
Tom Hilton
Does anyone else miss Martha Quinn? (As far as I know she had no subsequent career, apart from a small part in Chopper Chicks in Zombietown.)
Steeplejack
@Tom Hilton:
Martha Quinn? Not so much. Daisy Fuentes, yes, and maybe–what was her name? Duff? Duffy? Went on to write a cookbook and be a survivor of and spokesperson for some disease, I think.
asiangrrlMN
I got the title after reading the thread a few times. He is brilliant, for sure. Good luck, Cole! Hope you get the brace taken off.
@Max: Good luck to you, too, Maxy. But, how is Vancouver the same as Portland, Oregon?
russell
Steeplejack, no worries.
Tom Hilton
@Steeplejack: Daisy Fuentes was long after my time.
Get offa my lawn, you kids!
alhutch
@asiangrrlMN: Vancouver, WA is just across the Columbia River from Portland. Lots of folks live there and work in Portland.
