Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

’Where will you hide, Roberts, the laws all being flat?’

Let me file that under fuck it.

Republicans are radicals, not conservatives.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

Everybody saw this coming.

He really is that stupid.

Since we are repeating ourselves, let me just say fuck that.

If America since Jan 2025 hasn’t broken your heart, you haven’t loved her enough.

Fight them, without becoming them!

Republican also-rans: four mules fighting over a turnip.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Republicans don’t lie to be believed, they lie to be repeated.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

Black Jesus loves a paper trail.

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

Fear or fury? The choice is ours.

White supremacy is terrorism.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

Take it away, Bad Horse’s Filly:

Couldn’t sleep the other night and was channel surfing when I stumbled upon my current celebrity chef crush, Ming Tsai. He had me at sesame seeds. I love sesame seeds and since that was the theme of the entire episode, I was hooked. I tried two of the recipes and decided they’d be good for tonight’s menu. One thing I really like about this dinner it is a one-pan meal. Quick and easy to cook and quick and easy to clean up. And dessert is a breeze to make and addictive. These are my versions of his, I didn’t change much because they were already simple and tasty.

On the board tonight:

On the board tonight: One Tombstone pepperoni pizza. Tastes best if baked until just before it starts to curl up like a potato chip. Best cheap pizza ever.

Has everyone seen the story about the married, anti-gay, family-values legislator in CA that got stopped and arrested for DWI in his state car after leaving a gay bar with another man? I love seeing jerks like this go down (so to speak).

The man named as the Pentagon shooter, J. Patrick Bedell, is apparently the creator of openinsurgent, among other software. So I assume we’ll now be seeing if the well-known rule that the word “terrorist” can never be applied to white guys has exceptions if the guy in question uses the word “insurgent” and Arabic text on a web page.

Have you ever had a bunch of stuff in the fridge you had to use up and just thrown it all into a pot and mixed it all up? That was dinner tonight, and it turned out unbelievably tasty. I even got to use the whole wheat linguine I ended up not caring for (I think my whole wheat pasta will be limited to spaghetti now) and it’s a very strange blend of textures and flavors. They say you can never argue with results though!

    @KCinDC:

And supposedly this is his Amazon wish list… :/

Incidentally, that thing you link… I’m sure that would in various ways say interesting things (especially to prosecutors) about the shooter’s mindset but just so you know he never actually appears to have written any “software” there, there’s nothing in the source tree except some PDFs that look like design documents (and it’s not been updated since 2006). There are a zillion pages like this on google code, people start a project and then never do any work on it after they create the google code page.

@mcc, true. He does have various other projects on Google Code and SourceForge and maybe elsewhere and posted messages on mailing lists related to Linux and other topics related to software development. I haven’t checked to see what’s in the other projects.

Thankfully, Allahpundit sets the record straight.

A Pentagon official tells NBC that the shooting appears to be “random” and not some sort of terrorist attack

Yup, some random dude walks up to the entrance of the Pentagon and randomly opens fire at random Pentagon cops.

    March 5, 2010 at 1:29 am

@mcc, also, I don’t think the PDFs are all design documents. As MikeJ says, one is a copy of “Man, Economy, and State” by the libertarian thinker Murray Rothbard. Another is titled “Investigation of the Death of Colonel James Sabow, USMC” (someone who apparently died in 1991 in what was ruled a suicide).

For anyone who wants to paint Bedell as a teabagger (to me he’s looking like another crazy whose philosophy, such as it is, doesn’t line up well with standard political movements), here’s a passage from the Rothbard book:

It should be understood that, praxeologically, there is no difference between the nature and effects of taxation and inflation on the one hand, and of robberies and counterfeiting on the other. Both intervene coercively in the market, to benefit one set of people at the expense of another set.

Does anyone else think shallots are the secret weapon for improving many dishes? I can’t get enough of these — the virtues of garlic and onions combined in an evil way.

My other vice: Double the amount of garlic called for in any recipe. Add more as taste requires.

@Pennypacker: Shallots, at least in my local store, are one of the big hidden bargains. They’re $3.99 a pound, but a pound of them is like the whole basket of them plus. I don’t think I’ve paid more than 75 cents for six or seven and their flavor is simply amazing. Delicate enough for fish but tough enough for beef dishes and just about every thing in between. Try it as half the replacement of a traditional mirepoix (there’s a French term for it but my inner Julia Child is asleep right now), it will change the character of the dish.

@freelancer: It’s all good dude. If anyone thinks there’s some malice behind your jest, you’re right, they’re coming from ignorance of your character and honestly fuck em. The Internet is not for wusses.

@Steeplejack: I have an eerie addiction when it comes to flatbread pizza, and it takes a huge leap of faith for most folks to try it. Once they do, though, it gets devoured even by the most devoted carnivore. The Pacific Veggie Pizza from Domino’s is by far the best veggie pizza I’ve ever had, and you put it on their thin crust and it’s close to culinary paradise.

I can’t say that my refrigerator these days it quite that sparsely stocked but– there have been times, that would have been about it.

I lived in an apartment once for three months before I realized that I didn’t have an oven. Just to sort of give you an idea.

I was walking around with something all ready to cook one day looking for it, and suddenly realized that there wasn’t one. A female friend asked “How long have you lived here”? and I said oh, I think three months now.

Better now, as I say, I actually like to cook these days.

    @Yutsano:

I’ll admit that I don’t know if shallots are a bargain or not at my store, I buy them with unconditional love and indifference to price. Whenever I see onions in a recipe I substitute some amount of shallots for the simple love of that half-carmelized sugar/half garlic-y flavor. Chili, chowder, stir-fry — they work in just about everything.

Had a neighbor just out of law school who I asked if he had an onion one night as I was making up a new eggplant recipe. He said let’s go check. He opened the crisper and all that was there were about 5 or 6, well I didn’t have a clue but they looked like pencils. Of course they had been carrots at some point in time but not for quite a bit of it. He of course did not remove the offending veg but closed the crisper and I’ll bet they got thrown out when he moved, which was after me, and I stayed for about 3 more years. Maybe. Well probably not.

    Bill E Pilgrim

    March 5, 2010 at 4:42 am

@Ruckus: Well the “just out of law school” makes it sort of natural, my story on the other hand was from well into my late 30s.

Living in places with great restaurants and being on the road a lot made it all more possible I guess. “You really are a bachelor” my friend said with a smile once, shaking her head. This was after I served her dinner –which included a pizza that I had made myself, by the way, I mean rolled out the dough from scratch and everything, plus a salad– on the other hand when I “set” the table I realized I only had one fork.

@burnspbesq: Does anyone also think that this WH needs a new PR department, even when they are standing up for what they believe in?

This current noise machine talking point about HCR reform is that it’s being “jammed down our throats” because polls show that a current bill is “unpopular”.

So the way the White House has chosen to respond is with “Well if you ask people about the particulars of the bill, they’re in favor of those!”

Which just strikes me as not only lame, but leaving it wide open for idiots like Charles Krauthammer who writes today something along the lines of “Well people would agree to ice cream delivered to each citizen every day too, but if you tell them it will bankrupt the country, then well, that’s a different story!”

Now granted, Krauthammer is a feckless mercenary so he’ll find some idiotic thing to claim about anything Democrats say. However a better way to respond to the idiotic “unpopular” charge in the first place is to point out that polls showing people opposed to the bill include progressives, a lot of them, who dislike it because it’s not strong enough reform, and that polls also show that support for reform is huge, including even very strong reform with a public option.

The “Yes but you see, when asked about each issue separately…” approach seems far too fussy, complicated, and Kerryesque.

Yeah yeah, we’re all critics I guess. This one just seems obvious.

The most hilarious comment came from Friedman. He believes that democracy is trending in Eye-rak, with Sunnis and Shia walking hand in hand. He must have missed the news on the bombings. Hmmm … bombings right before the election. What does that suggest? Well, it suggests to me that some faction with a vested interest in the continuation of chaos is concerned that the elections might result in a government being formed that is actually capable of, like, governing.

Let’s wait and see what happens on Sunday, and thereafter, before we jump to the easy conclusion that Friedman doesn’t know what he’s talking about, ‘k? Even a broken Friedman is right once every Friedman Unit.
