Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Nothing worth doing is easy.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

And now I have baud making fun of me. this day can’t get worse.

Peak wingnut was a lie.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

The words do not have to be perfect.

“Squeaker” McCarthy

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Let’s delete this post and never speak of this again.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Consistently wrong since 2002

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

Infrastructure week. at last.

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

Just got word that frequent commenter and registered Obot Genine is in the hospital, having suffered from a series of mini-strokes. Apparently she has a (and I am going to screw this up) dissection of the carotid artery and is on blood-thinners and will have to see a neurologist in the morning. She’ll probably end up having surgery. Right now she is resting comfortably in the hospital, and as she is currently unemployed, I would be remiss if I did not point out that the only reason she has health insurance right now is, as she has mentioned in the comments before, that the Democrats and our failure of a President (according to my political betters) managed to extend COBRA and she was able to keep her coverage. Keep her in your thoughts.

Picked up Season one of the Pretender for 15 bucks, so I’m off to give that a shot. Talk amongst yourselves.

May the FSM keep her warm in hir noodly appendages. Hopefully this story can be used to show that A) we need HCR so Pass. The. Damn. Bill. and B) that the Republicans need to stop dicking around with people while they are down. Not a ton of hope for the second event occurring however.

    Rest well Genine.

Count me as a member of the anti-firebagger bridge (the Fightin’ Firefighters?) – as soon as this whole HCR theater started last summer with the astroturf funded Ride of the Tea Baggers, it was pretty clear HCR was going to help a lot of people and likely screw the healthcare industrial complex in the shorts as a side benefit (although not a 100% covered side benefit).

Better than Ezra and others were throwing around back of the envelope numbers that of the around 30 million or so uninsured who were going to be now covered under HCR, something like 95% of those folks were getting covered merely by a stroke of the pen that raised Medicaid eligibility – which pretty much sold HCR for me. The rest of the nonsense around the public option, national exchanges, etc. was just nibbling around the edges for the remaining 5% and was more about keeping costs down in the future – as such, the left’s collective brown acid freakout over the public option was clearly so much bullshit by people who would rather be railing about George Bush than dealing with the fact that their team had to actually, you know, run the country and shit.

How Obama doesn’t just go on national TV and just scream “all you mothafuk*&ers just need to chill the eff out” is beyond me.

You know what- there really is no need for personal attacks on Jane. I disagree with a lot of what she is doing lately, but I still think she wants the best for the country and wants to advance the right causes. My problem is with her methods, and I still actually like Jane as a person. I’ve had nothing but positive conversations with her the last few years.

Additionally, as she is a multiple time cancer survivor, I find making fun of her hair absolutely disgusting.

So knock it off with the personal attacks. Does it make me more or less right about an issue because I am pudgy and my hair is turning gray?

Best of luck to you Genine! This is yet another of the millions of horrible stories of how our current health care system is failing us. Unfortunately, there are way too many people who hear these stories and can only ridicule and mock the victim, or worse, suggest that they’re all just made up to gin up sympathy for reform. Something tells me that if the Average Joe who thinks his insurance is awesome actually had to deal with a catastrophic illness, he’d come to the stunning realization that he’s totally screwed. Ben Feller, Associated Press concern troll:

President Barack Obama’s furious, final push to get a health care bill passed threatens to shove aside the message he promised would top his list this year: creating jobs.
Even as the White House juggles several enormous issues at once, the public takes its cues about the president’s chief concern from how he spends his time, energy and capital. As Obama himself put it on Wednesday, from now until Congress takes a final vote on a health care overhaul, “I will do everything in my power to make the case for reform.”
That kind of now-or-never campaign means the nation can expect a debate consumed by health care, again, for weeks.

Award-winning actress Angela Bassett will provide the voice of Mrs. Obama…

During the new episode Lisa Simpson’s classmates ostracize her for being an straight “A” student, and the First Lady comes to her defense. After being cast out by her friends, Lisa is thrilled when she gets a chance to meet the President’s wife. Ultimately, Mrs. Obama helps Lisa discover the joys of being an overachiever.”

Advice for anyone scared of cooking chicken:

    – Buy a good instant-read digital thermometer. They’re cheap, will provide you instant peace of mind, and over time will teach you what color and texture to look for in cooked meat.

    – Buy good chicken. Free range, air-chilled chicken is much less prone to salmonella contamination and tastes better.

    – Learn to love the dark meat. Chicken thighs work in virtually any recipe that calls for breasts, and are much, much harder to overcook. They’re also more flavorful, and if you learn to render and reuse or discard the subcutaneous fat correctly, are just as healthful.

    @SIA: It’s so easy…

1 lb of italian sausage (I use sweet, but you can use hot if you like)

    1 lb orchetta pasta

    2-1/2 cup chicken broth

    Red pepper flakes

2 to 3 heads of broccoli rabe (depending on size)

couple cloves of garlic (depending on your preference)

    4 tblsp butter

1-1/2 cup of grated, fresh parmesean cheese

Cook pasta to al dente and set aside. Blanche broccoli rabe (after removing stems) and set aside. In large saucepan, brown sausage (remove from casings). You can season up the sausage with some dried basil, onion powder, etc. if you like. Once the sausage is brown, add minced garlic and red pepper flakes. Cook for a few minutes to open up the pepper and garlic flavors. Do not drain the grease, I know it would be healthier, but not more flavorful. Then, add chicken broth and bring to a boil. Chop up the broccoli rabe and add to the pot. Let it simmer for about 10 minutes. Then, add the butter and parm and pasta, and let it simmer until the sauce is to your liking in thickness. Garnish with more parm, if you’d like.

I’m sure you have a good, competent neurologist. If you wanted a second opinion before any possible surgery, you might consider finding one the way my SO did last month. I was in a nasty traffic accident. At the hospital, SO went to a nurses station in an ICU area asking them if their husband or family member had a head injury, who would they want examining and treating them. Her reasoning was nurses see the results. She may be a pain in the ass sometimes, but my SO ain’t dumb.

    Here are some other suggestions:

    (1) when you cook chicken, wash the vegetables you serve with it. In fact…always wash the vegetables you’re going to serve, even if you’re cooking them. The majority of food poisoning cases in the US arise from contaminated vegetables, not contaminated meat.

    (2) The only kinds of meat which carries a significant contamination risk is ground meat; those need to be cooked to death. (I like my meat very lightly cooked, and even I cook hamburgers hard.) If you want to serve undercooked ground meat, there are mechanisms for greatly reducing the risk, but they require that you prepare the stuff yourself.

Me, I love steak au poivre…and I just don’t eat it.

    (3) DerrenG is right about chicken thighs. In fact, I prefer poultry thighs to poultry breasts in almost all cases. They have a richer flavor and a much more luscious texture, and, properly handled, are no fattier than the breasts are.

Personal attacks against outsiders? Yeah, maybe not so much.

I think Jane’s current goal is to kill HCR. That’s not about tactics, that is existential regarding a vital piece of legislation, that if killed, like she wants it to be, will become existential to tens of thousands of sick Americans whose lives hang in the balance. Big stakes, and Jane doesn’t back down, and neither do I on something like this. But anything to do with her personal appearance, and especially as it relates to her cancer, is not in bounds. It is stupid and counter productive in defeating her wishes, which need to be defeated with prejudice. It is not a matter of liking her, or her methods, this is a life/death struggle we are in right now, and there is no room for such personal sentiment, nor personal attacks, even if she does them, and she has, repeatedly. It is bidness, the bidness of government by the people and can we make it work to save lives. Jane has good healthcare I presume.

Her words and actions have buried her and are all that is needed to make her look too stupid, ego-driven, and viciously indifferent to others to be taken seriously. Which is what has happened. Unlike Stuck, I have no fear of Jane Hamsher derailing anything other than her own credibility and to inflate her into some sort of power player with skeery mad powers over political outcomes is hysterical melodrama. Hell, as we all know, I’m a reluctant fan of this particular bill, but Jane couldn’t even convince me that killing the bill is a good idea.

I think I have sort of posted that my boss and good friend had a stroke, and at the risk of sounding like a broken record, the short story is that in November we lost our group coverage after my wife had surgery. BCBS claimed that since we had 50% of our company out of state (2 people in Oregon, 2 in Cali) they could legally drop us, so they did. We scrambled for new coverage, and by the grace of the FSM, we found some. Three weeks later, he had a stroke and is fighting for his life. His ICU bills came to $800,000. He is facing long term health care costs and honestly, we don’t know if he’ll ever be a functioning person again.

Right now, United Health care has someone working nights to find the loophole that will drop us again so they can stop paying for his care. Right now, no law prevents this, and when they drop him, his family will go bankrupt. This is a fact.

So when Jane Hamsher says kill the bill, I want to see her DIAF.

I don’t think lots and lots of people will read it (which is too bad, because it’s plain language, personal and easy to understand) but maybe members of Congress will read it.
I went to the local Democratic meeting here week before last, 3 counties, and I don’t know if Democrats in Congress know this, but no one here among the rank and file is even seriously considering failure. They don’t follow every twist and turn. They think it’s on a slow and incredibly annoying route to passage. I didn’t share my doubts.
They’re assuming it’s going to pass, and they are ‘the base”, here, anyway. They are going to be mad as hell if it doesn’t, after all this.

that is actually a good movie, imo, once you get past the cringe-inducing 70sishness of it. A decent representation of what it was like to grow up in that kind of family and that kind of neighborhood in those days, and the acting is pretty good. The little subplot tragedies are well-portrayed also — the poor kid who got his girlfriend pregnant, and the poor chick in unrequited love.

Best wishes to her. But even if she has good insurance, this sounds like a couple thousand $ out of pocket.

Best Wishes, Genine. And I thank the President.

@geg6: I’ve said before, peeps who get themselves on the teevee with regularity, have them some power. Take Jane off of teevee and she is just another internet wanker and no threat worth considering for affecting anything.

Get Well Soon Genine. I hope you have people to take good care of you at home when you’re recovering. God this makes me so sad.

Monday will be three weeks since my husband was laid off. Our insurance died on the last day of Feb and the company still hasn’t sent us any COBRA info or paperwork. The husband just had to get his heart and diabetes meds refilled and the Plavix alone was almost 200 dollars. I guess we’ll eventually be reimbursed for that, but it hurts right now. Anyone who wants to kill HCR can diaf, fuck them and their good insurance coverage.

Then,I got a bill from the optometrist for an additional 230 bucks for glasses I paid for in freaking November. I asked them if that was the final total and they said yes. Now it turns out they made a mistake and want me to pay for it. Um,yeah, good luck with that,we have no income right now except for 300 bucks a week in unemployment benefits.

    Hi Everyone!

Thank you so much for the positive thoughts and energy. I really appreciate it. Yutsano is right, it really does lift my spirits. For, that, I thank you. It means a lot that so many people are pulling for me, online and offline. (All of my friends, online and off, have been great.)

This whole thing has been freaky. (I’m not even 35 yet) and I don’t know what I would have done without my insurance. I am so glad the COBRA assistance was extended. I didn’t think I had anything that serious. I was dizzy and felt like I was in a dream-state. The most alarming thing was the numbness and lack of coordination with my left arm. Initially, I thought I just had low blood sugar. I am glad I had the resources to catch this before it got out of hand. (The doctor said that if I waited, I would have been paralyzed on my left side.)

But I can easily see how someone who did not have insurance would put off going to the ER because it didn’t seem like a crisis. A friend’s sister is dying of brain cancer. She had headaches for a while but did not have insurance. She did not go to the hospital until she collapsed at work. They found the cancer then, but in stage four. Not much can be done at this point. Things like this is why health care reform is so important.

I wish you the best of luck in your situation, A Mom Anon. I feel you, trust me.

Sorry, I am late to the party, but I just got my laptop a little while ago.
