Things broke my way this morning. Now that I have my car back after a month in the shop, I’ve been trying to get the cats to sleep an hour later, now that I no longer have to catch the bus.
For once, DST worked for me.

We had 70 mph winds last night and lost power a couple of times for a few minutes, but otherwise unscathed. Even the garbage cans didn’t get blown out of place. My next door neighboor — 20 feet away — lost his fence and part of his roof and his back yard looks like a war zone. The strangeness of microclimate.

Drizzly and colder than it was yesterday. We had our first thunderstorms of the year here on Friday; lots of thunder and lightning. The heavy rain combined with all of the melting snow made for some flooding here; the Miami river is pretty busy right now.
Hope to get my latest art rug finished today. I’m not getting much help from my skylight since the clouds are thick, but it’s better than it has been all week.
Drizzly and blah here too, but an improvement on the strong wind and rain yesterday and last night…everything is clean now, that’s for sure.

I am work, on time, thank you. Beautiful day in Houston, sunny & mild – it’s why we live here. Too bad it goes away in 3 months.
Anyway, back to opening the kitchen and baking many goodies.

Has rained, is raining, will rain. Can’t find the source of the water in the basement, and it’s driving me mad. Thank goodness for wet vacs.

Anybody know how to use Adobe Audition?
A bit random, I realize, for a Sunday morning.
Except it’s not morning here and it’s driving me nuts.
Everything seems okay except it won’t playback any midi input from this keyboard I just bought. Just trying Audition for the first time, but if I can’t do that with it, it’s sort of lost the whole point.
Must be missing something but I can’t figure out what.
Off to the airport in an hour or so (conference in Portland). I’ll be taking the train back (~48 hours through the mountains and across the Great Plains), which should be an interesting experience.

@Svensker: I went to one of my regular cafes a few days ago and the telephone booth on the sidewalk was gone, surrounded by little roadwork barriers, and all that remained was shattered glass on the ground and a sort of metal stump.
A truck or car must have hit it, I figured, but when I asked the guy at the cafe he said “Nope. Wind did it.”
I had been at that cafe the day before and the wind was extremely strong, the awnings were flapping around and so on, but sheeesh.

@dmsilev: I’m taking the train from here (Mayberry, basically) to DC and back for a conference at the end of the month. I can’t hardly wait. Your trip sounds fantastic.

Overcast and drizzly here. However, I shall not let that keep me from the first bike ride of the year. But first, chores must be done.
16.
dmsilev
@SiubhanDuinne: Will do. I’m carting along a DSLR and a few lenses in anticipation of the ride, and hopefully should get some pretty pictures.
I will say that I don’t understand Amtrak’s pricing structure. The Empire Builder train starts in Seattle and Portland, and the two halves join up in Spokane and proceed east to Chicago. Turns out to be cheaper for me to take the train from Portland to Seattle and then the Seattle half of the EB rather than just get on the EB at Portland. Weird.

Three solid days of gray, gray, gray. What is this Spring of which you speak?

This has been the grayest, coldest winter that I can remember here in north Alabama. Usually we have regular days of 60-70 degrees and sunny. Not this year…..
But…. after saving my pennies, I was able to buy a great Epson scanner that will do medium format negatives! I’ve got hundreds of MF negs that have never been printed, so it’s been fun to finally get a look at them.

Still raining here in Richmond. Probable flooding in some parts of VA, starting Tuesday.

Gloomy here in sw Michigan, too. Sheesh. Pete Hoekstrass is on the teevee being interviewed on our local MTP about his run for Governor. I think I’ll go back to bed.
Sunny over here. Had to stop for drovers herding sheep this morning on my run. I have this baking in the oven right now. I added 1 T fresh rosemary, and the smell is rocking our world.

You may know that Google has a competition to bring ultra high speed fiber optic broadband to one or more communities in the US. Duluth, MN community is working hard to to be chosen and Al Franken is showing his support by making a youtube pitching Duluth. Al included some footage from when he & Tom Davis actually did do tourism spots for Duluth years ago.

Amtrak has nothing on the airlines where incomprehensible pricing is concerned. On my flight from SF to Hong Kong last week, the unrestricted coach fare was $1,000 – business class was $14,000.

I just had the same thought. Think I’ll take the canines out. I feel like a mole.
The sun is trying to peek out after a week of clouds, fog, drizzle and rain. Most of the snow is gone.
Amtrak’s pricing is pretty good if you book your trip WAY in advance. It seems like prices go up every week and get really expensive if you book at the last minute.
I’d love to take The Empire Builder from the Twin Cities out to the west coast. I sometimes drive along side of it on my way to work as it heads off down along the Mississippi River towards Chicago.
The Empire Builder does have one big flaw in that, in one direction (can’t remember which) it spends the day getting across N Dakota and goes thru the Rockies at night. You miss some of the best scenery along the trip.
Let us know how the lemon cake is. Although I use olive oil, I have yet to try it in a cake.
It was … oh. It was wow. It was really good. I didn’t glaze it or ice it, just threw some whipped cream on there and some raspberries. Perfect with tea.
Things I did to change the recipe:
Swapped 1/2 cup almonds, ground to powder, for 1/2 cup of the flour.
Added 1 TBSP rosemary (lemon thyme would work too).
That recipe will make awesome muffins. Took about 15 minutes longer to bake than indicated on the recipe, but that could be down to my oven, which is in its last days.
In re the Bean: She’s tall. Mr Jud takes her swimming once a week with his sister and our nephew, and he’s always telling me how much taller than other babies she is. Didn’t believe him until we were at the park today, and a little girl not much bigger than Bean ran up to her and said “Hi, I’m Alice! What’s your name?” Naturally, Bean couldn’t reply, since she’s only a year old. Alice was three. Whoa.
