I am pretty sure these ‘journalists’ were not always such a bootlicking sycophants.

I deleted Jane and her Firebaggers from my bookmarks today. No more of her shit.

It took 4 tries but I got the car smogged and tagged for the next year, 12 days until the deadline. In between the 3rd & 4th smog tests? $1500 in repairs to the engine. /eyeroll

How’s this for a pickle? On March 1st, I sent in my continuing claim form for unemployment. On March 11th, when my first check was due, I received a letter from the EDD notifying me of a telephone interview. No check. Not happy, was I. I dial in to the federal court last Sunday night to check my availability for the jury duty and it was HELD OVER for a week. So I have gone 18 days without any new source of funds and I’m entirely tapped out. The kicker? I can’t look for work until the jury duty summons has been fulfilled and I either get on a panel or get released. My unemployment insurance terms dictate that I must look for work but I can’t because of the jury duty. I’ve about had it with everything. The car hijinks were solved with a loan from friends, but it’s a terrible drag to not be able to look for work.

    Oh, and PTFB. Please.

Completely stupid question that might belong in the “Get Off My Lawn” thread: when did razors become so damn expensive? I mean, I get that they aren’t really cheap, but just the replacement cartridges are like $15 for 4 of them. It’s almost enough to make me investigate options to take hair off my face on a more permanent basis.

Bad day for the Big East. G’Town gets massacred by Ohio, ND comes up short against Old Dominion, Marquette blows it against Washington, and the only team to win needed ref calls and a FT streak to put away Robert Morris, and even then, RMU looked like the stronger team in everything but the scoreboard.

Much as I do not like Louisville or Pitt, I want them to win just to salvage the conference’s standing. Oh, and WVU win, of course.

This is a subject you do not want to get my husband started on. Nor the tendency of the manufacturers to discontinue razor models so that you can’t buy refills anymore, have to start over with a new one. The corporate conspiracy rants can go on for a very long time. An old trick, find the 800 number on the back of the package and call them and politely complain about something, the price or the switching or the whatnot. They send coupons, good ones.

McLaren Park is the second-largest park in San Francisco, named after the man who made the largest, Golden Gate Park, what is is today. It’s tucked into the southeast corner of the city; tourists and other-towners often never have heard of it. The amphitheater there was renamed Jerry Garcia Amphitheater in 2005.

C&L takes a special moment to appreciate Sarah Palin’s hair on Hannity tonight. In addition to the hair, I would like to also draw attention to her jewelry. Frankly, the whole ensemble looks like a mom, or maybe a kindergarten teacher, from a particularly low quality Alaskan production of the ABC Afterschool Special circa 1977.

I don’t know what state you live in, but being on call for jury duty does not disqualify you from receiving unemployment compensation in California. I even had to postpone an EDD telephone hearing because I couldn’t guarantee that I wouldn’t be required to report to the court on that day and it was not a problem. Check your state’s EDD website.

@General Egali Tarian Stuck: I’ve ALWAYS been annoyed with it. Disagreement on tactics is not punching someone; the goals are the same, the values are the same—the disagreement is about how to get there. It’s just self-aggrandizing, phony martyrdom to call it hippie punching, particularly when the so-called puncher has been at it longer and has spent more time on progressive causes than the “punchee.”

Oh man, I could never do that. I’m pretty sure I am going to shave my head in more of a military-style cut in the next week or two. It’s short now, but not short enough. I also can’t stand having a lot of hair on my face. And not that it’s related, but I also can’t imagine having a tattoo unless I was in the military at some point.

Funny, as liberal as I might be, I am pretty conservative when it comes appearances.

    @PHinSD:
Until the summons has been dealt with, either by discharge or seating on a panel, I have to keep my days open. I can’t commit to any applications due to the possibility of getting selected for a panel next week. What killed me was the layover for jury selection until next week. I’ve had my days free for 18 days now. It’s nerve-wracking.

Corner Stone, I could skip out on the summons but the Court sent me a letter on March 3 strongly stating I reply to their questionnaire for eligibility because I’d let the original questionnaire slip my mind. The wording was strong enough that i don’t want to chance skipping out, especially since my previous excuse, that I would lose my job if I took time off to serve, no longer applies.

I was on call for federal jury service for the entire month of January.

Here’s what California state law says about it:

    California Unemployment Insurance Code Section 4554 ( c )
An individual shall not be disqualified under this section for
any week solely because the individual is before any court of the United States or any state pursuant to a lawfully issued summons to appear for jury duty, or the individual is hospitalized for treatment of an emergency or life-threatening condition.

If you’re going to start shaving your head, you’re definitely going to want to start springing for higher quality cartridges, shaving cream, etc. My fave shaving cream is from L’Occitane, but it only comes in a metal tube that is bigger than what TSA allows you to carry on, so I use The Art of Shaving’s shaving cream when I travel.

You’re also going to want to exfoliate your head periodically. Kiehl’s makes a pineapple-papaya scrub that’s really good for that purpose.

Interesting post on the constitutionality of “deem and pass”:

The text of Article I would seem to require a vote on the bill, and language in two Supreme Court opinions, INS v. Chadha and Clinton v. New York (the line-item veto case), would seem to interpret the bicameralism requirement in a fairly rigid and formalistic way. This is the legal authority that gives even many supporters of health care reform great pause.

There’s some case law on the other side: an 1892 Supreme Court case and a recent DC appellate ruling.

I think it would be pretty risky to pass the bill this way, because I think there’s a pretty good chance the Court would follow the Chadha and Clinton line of cases. And there will be challenges to it.
