Wow off to bed early.
I’m gonna be out in a minute, but I just watched an episode of “Criminal Minds” where Gavin Rossdale played an alleged “vampire serial killer”.
Now you can count me as a “Twilight” hater. I could care less about any of the actors or characters, BUT…If the Twilight vampires looked anything like Gavin Rossdale, then I’m just gonna have to go over to the dark side.

Not that I care so much now that I moved out of the festering sore of a state, but Artur Davis is running for Governor of Alabama. I told her to spill something hot on his crotch. And then laugh.
I mean, he’s from one of the most liberal districts in the state (covering much of Tuscaloosa, a university town). What a loser. Good luck in the election, douche magooshe. I sent money to his primary opponent.

@General Egali Tarian Stuck: I was too! But now I’m not. Someone at TNC’s place said that I should write a book called “How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Twitter.”
For my own purposes, I only ever tweet my own blog posts, or links to articles/posts by other people that I believe to be useful or generally fabulous. I will cop to doing a little over-heated “wooo-hooo!” tweeting on Sunday night as the HCR vote played out, but even that was fairly restrained. I don’t want to tell the world that I can’t decide what to have for dinner or, you know, how I can’t go get tacos because I’m waiting for the plumber (both real tweets).
But I am, for the most part, finding it so useful and interesting and often laugh-out-loud funny! A) It’s like a clipping service — I follow a bunch of people who are even more obsessed with Israel/Palestine than I am, and I am now always up-to-date, and often made aware of information I would have completely missed otherwise and B) I follow a few people like Ezra Klein who, out of nowhere, will start tweeting these random things! (I will confess I stopped following Roger Ebert after a few days, because his output is so constant [who can blame him?] that it just felt like too much).
Anyway, you and Ezra Klein and soylent green! Quite the coincidence!

OK…
I’ve had a terrible day. I’m house-sitting for my parents, who are overseas on vacation until Easter; at the moment they’re traveling with a group on a boat, pretty unreachable for the next 5 days, and then another week or so of additional traveling on land, also in a small group but in a small capital city.
My mom’s cat didn’t come home last night, and this morning after a couple hours of searching, I discovered her body. The vet says car accident. My Mom loves this cat like a grandchild. I’m still in shock (she was partially my cat as well); and my question is: Do I contact my parents and let them know, or let them know when I get them at the airport in 10 days. Do I email them and have them call me when they are off the boat and in a hotel but still on vacation? I’d like to know what people think, I know there are many pet lovers here.
robertdsc
@Robin G:
I’m there. Keep your chin up. It’s difficult but a positive attitude does work.

@Ty Lookwell: IMHO, I wouldnt tell them until they are home or at least close to home. Don’t meant to sound harsh, but the cat is not alive and telling your parents is not going to bring her back and it will ruin their vacation. But, hey, its just my IMHO and you know your mom.

@Bnut: I’ve been really impressed by Artur Davis when I’ve seen him in action on the Judiciary Committee – I think he’d be way better than Conyers. I know he’s running for Ala. governor and so he’s been voting conservative but does he seriously think that Alabama is going to put in a black guy as governor? Are you kidding? He’d be better off pulling a Harold Ford and moving to NY and running for the senate.

KDP
@Ty Lookwell: How distressing for you that this happened while you were the responsible party. What a dilemma for you! On the one hand, you don’t want her to come home to such sad news; on the other, you know that if you tell her now, their vacation may be spoiled.
I think your decision should be based on their personalities. How do they normally handle the reception of bad news?
Me, I’d rather know up front so that I could resolve my feelings before I came home to a cat-less house; my sister, on the other hand, would be someone who should not be told till her return.
I asked my spouse, he said wait till they return as the news would just spoil their pleasure in the holiday and there is nothing you can do to change the circumstances.
Is this a situation in which you might tell your father and let him decide when to tell your mother?

For that, TS, I feel like paddling across the pacific and throwing my kayak through your goddamned window.
Dee Loralei
@Ty Lookwell: Ty, I’m so sorry. This has to be hard for you and will be doubly hard for your folks when they learn of it. Mom might even feel guilty about leaving town. I wouldn’t tell them til they got home. Don’t ruin their vacation, and there is nothing they can do at this time.
Ask the vet if they can keep the body in the freezer til your folks get home and mom can decide to cremate and recieve the remains, to bury the body at home or in a pet cemetery or to let the crematorium dispose of it. Or if they’ve chosen a way to deal with other animals you can make an educated assumption that they’ll go the same way this time. But still I think better to leave the choice to them.
But if she calls and asks a direct question about her baby, then I would tell her the truth. So, I’m suggesting a lie of ommission as opposed to a lie of commission.
And I am so sorry that you’re having to deal with this. Not only the guilty feelings you must be having, but most especially your own loss of a beloved family member.
mr. whipple
@mai naem:
Agreed.
ajr22
@ellaesther: Ebert has a great twitter feed, he does tend to post a little much, however i enjoy his shots at palin and rush. I don’t think anyone tweets more than Markos however. I follow about 65 people, and there are still times when Markos has the last 11 tweets in my deck.
Dee Loralei
@Dee Loralei: FYWP won’t let me edit. Ty, I was going to add that it might help ease your mom’s loss having some say in the disposition of the body. I don’t really mean closure. But something akin to that. Something more like being useful and doing that final loving act we all must do for our 4 legged family members. Maybe it will help her feel less guilty.
Ty Lookwell
@KDP:
I’ve considered emailing my Dad with the bad news a day or two before the return flight. I don’t want to email him right away because if he decides to tell my mom it will effectively ruin the trip for them and, perhaps, others in this small group (my mom will be devastated regardless, but it will be really difficult in this small confined group) , and if he decides not to say anything then he caries this burden of lies and deception. So I’m tempted to wait and let him know just before the return and let him judge if he’d like to say anything or wait for me to tell my mom on her return.
Its really hard because I’m still in a kind of shock myself and everyone is giving me different advice on what to do.
mr. whipple
I agree. That places him in the middle and isn’t fair. I would wait until they come home.
Ty Lookwell
@Dee Loralei:
Thanks for the kind words. After I found her I took her to the vet to have her cleaned and put into cold storage; it seemed very wrong to do anything without my Mom’s knowledge and ability to say goodbye. I think I’m pretty much in agreement with all of your suggestions and advice.
Fern
@Ty Lookwell: Personally, I would wait at least until they are on their way home. No sense ruining a perfectly good vacation. In person is better than email, I think. Plus the airport is no place to get bad news. Maybe on the drive back from the airport?

I’ve got my own kitty dilemma – I have to move (building’s gone condo) and I can’t find a suitable apartment that takes cats. And I think the girls are pretty much unadoptable, given their age – all three are over 14. So my choices are trying to see if I can get them into one of the no-kill shelters (kinda unlikely) where they will be stuck in cages, or having them put down. I feel guilty as hell.

Resume the drive home when the news has sunk in. God, what a horrible accident. I wish you luck.

KDP
@Ty Lookwell: I feel for you, I do. It’s hard to lose a creature that you love, whether skin, fur, feathers or fins.
I think waiting until just before their return to tell your father makes a lot of sense, particularly since they appear to be traveling with a group.
And, I am glad you agree with @Dee Loralei Dee Loralei’s suggestion about the body. I think it will be helpful for your mother to be involved in that final decision. I know when my sister’s Rottie died last fall in a freak accident, it was important for her to have that last moment with Bella’s body.
Please take time for yourself, and know that we will be thinking about you.
Ty Lookwell
Thanks, everyone. (gbear your suggestion on finding a quiet place near the airport beforehand is a good one, thanks)
This house is so big, weird and empty with that cat gone… I worry about my parents living here without any pets and I don’t know how long it will take for them to be ready to adopt another.
Fern
@Dee Loralei: Vacancy rate is well under 1% – so it’s hard to find something decent, period.
But I will give the shelters a try, and hopefully they can find a foster home – but the no-kill shelters here are kinda picky about what they accept.
Fern
@MikeTheZ: So, will it the reconciliation thingie get passed tomorrow, then?
MikeTheZ
@Fern: Depends. Reid is grilling McConnell right now on if the ReThugs will continue offering up pointless amendments as a delaying tactic. He sounds like he’s been taking lessons from Pelosi, actually.
And Bunning just proposed another Amendment for Seniors to opt out of Medicare. Wow, can you be any less discrete in wanting to waste time?
KDP
@MikeTheZ: They are still running the tally on the Roberts motion to commit. Once this is done, the bill goes for the final vote, yes?
Wasn’t the timeline 20 hours debate, vote-o-rama, and then final vote on the bill?
Reid is talking now about the 23 amendments from the 20 hours of debate have been finished. None were adopted, all offered by minorty, average number of amendments is 21, all chairs agreed to move forward, House worked through the weekend, we need to move on. Wants McConnell to inform them of Republican plans for tomorrow. McConnell says we can look at this bill and the next in the next few days. He wants to talk off the floor. Reid wants to focus only on this bill, HR 4872. Reid points out that this bill is an improvement to the ‘law of the land.’ House waiting for action, so let’s continue.
Bunning proposes an amendment for seniors allowing them to voluntarily opt out of Medicare Part A without negative effect on their Social Security income.
So, more amendments to come it appears.
Arclite
@ Kristine
Yeah, I’m only familiar with the movie, maybe that’s why. As for Reeves, I find him good in some stuff and not so good in others. The movies that worked for me are the Matrix, Constantine, Speed, Devil’s Advocate, and The Gift. I thought he was totally out of place in Dracula and Little Buddha, however.
MikeTheZ
@KDP: The shocking thing was McConnell had the gall to point out that they’ve added more amendments here then they added to the healthcare bill in December. Well no shit, Sherlock, hard to add anything to a bill you’re obstructing on a party line via the filibuster.

Should I put away all the cat dishes, the cat litter box, and her bed before my parents return? @Fern: That is truly a sukky position for you and your cats, too. Will your vet’s office let you post a notice looking for a new home for them (who knows, maybe someone will even have a lead towards a new apartment where you can all stay together)? If you expand your search outwards (work backwards on Petfinder?), is there a no-kill kitty facility where your cats could live out their days together in a somewhat less restrictive environment? Worse comes to worst, are your old guys even flexible enough to make a transition to a new environment, however positive?
Whatever happens, remember that you HAVE given them each 14+ years of a good life (which is at least a decade more than they’d have experienced “in the wild” as strays)…

I’m tempted to open up C-SPAN in a new tab, but I’m enjoying the music I’m listening to (the new Dave Holland Octet record, “Pathways”) way too much. So I’ll just hang out here.

About the many pointless and time-wasting amendments:
I remember the Young Americans for Freedom at my university objecting to student council funding for every student activity group on specious grounds, one at a time, long into the night. That was in 1972. Some thing never change.
Example: All the outdoor sports groups were accused of affiliation with a notorious subversive group known as the Sierra Club.

@MikeTheZ:
Oh they are such merry pranksters! For the next amendment, why don’t they emulate O’Keefe and dress up as pimps and prostitutes?

@Nutella:
As a longtime Sierra Club member, thank you for the compliment.

What’s next, an amendment to sell Sequoia National Park to Weyerhauser?
MikeTheZ
@Mark S.: I’m half expecting #47 to be the public option, just to see if they can catch the Dems off guard.
gbear
You know, after this is over, the democrats should introduce every one of these fricking ammendments as a stand-alone bill just to watch the republicans freak out and vote against it.
MikeTheZ
Republicans just announced that they have no less than 5 more amendments to come.
#27-Risch proposes his amendment like a used car salesman. Trying to make it sound like there’s a new tax on the poor. Baucus points out that Risch is full of crap.

So that coffin on Carnahan’s lawn? It was put there by Gateway Pundit and some of his fellow teabaggers. They claim it was for a “prayer vigil”. Here’s his post about it:

@Ty Lookwell: The litter box, yes, but the food bowls, no.
We catholic-types are coming up on Maundy Thursday, where we strip the altar of all frippery and clean the altar to receive the body of Christ.
It doesn’t sound like much, but it’s incredibly moving to prepare for the dead body of someone you have loved so much*, even in a 2000-year-old ritual.
Maybe your mom will find comfort in cleaning the food bowls herself.
*The Holy Litter Box is not cleaned as part of the ceremony.

@Anne Laurie:
Thank you for that comment.

The President Pro Tem sounds like he’s utterly sick of this.
Kay Bailey Hutchinson looking to make the marriage tax repeal permanent, as well as the sales tax deduction for #28. Baucus just says she’s using stimulus funds to do it, and we’re up to another point of order vote.

@MikeTheZ: You’re watching this circus on cspan? You must have one hell of a strong stomach.
MikeTheZ
@Fern: Its perversely amusing, in part because the ReThugs are utterly failing, and in part because I wonder just how long they’re going to keep it up.

Here’s something I wouldn’t understand about conservatives’ opposition to the mandate if I didn’t understand that conservatives don’t argue in anything remotely resembling good faith: Since when those who can afford HC coverage but don’t buy it pass their medical bills on to us if they wind up in the hospital, the new law mandates — wait for it — *personal responsibility*.
sigh…

Oh, how touching. They were crying over all the people who are going to die because of the death panels. It was worth it for this:
MattR
@MikeTheZ: Just flipped on CSPAN to watch while I was taking care of a couple final work tasks. Did not realize the coverage ws on CSPAN2. CSPAN is showing a repeat of a hearing on Internet regulation in China. When I flipped on there was a woman answering questions with the caption “Go Daddy Group”. I had to watch for a few seconds to make sure it wasn’t some weird new commercial.
MikeTheZ
@MattR: Thats pretty funny. #28 fails.
MattR
Has the entire Democratic caucus stuck together in defeating these ammendments? Or has the vote total been in the low 50s?
MikeTheZ
@MattR: Bayh, Nelson, and Lincoln have splintered off a few times. Olympia Snowe has actually voted WITH the Dems on more than one occasion. High score for the night was a 61 a few amendments back. Its also worth noting that a lot of these have been under point of order votes that require the ReThugs to get 60 votes.
MikeTheZ
Al Franken now serving as President Pro Tem. Sherrod was so done.
Vitter proposes #29, allowing for mobile mammography units or something to that effect. Also said that the bill already was going to have to go back to the House anyway, though if it is, its because of something the parlimentarian did.
Baucus objects on diverting funds from the highway funds, and we go to a simple majority vote to kill.

My advice, let them come home before telling them. It’s only a cat. Nothing ruins your vacation like getting off a plane to find out some maniac just blew away a bunch of your friends right after you get off the plane. The cat can wait.

This is an Open Thread, so I can bitch about whatever, right? Good.
So, I’ve decided to take a Rovian approach to arguing with wingnuts lately – attack their strengths. You know, the way that Repubs attacked Gore’s smarts and Kerry’s war record and Obama’s speechgiving (TELEPROMPTER BLARRG)? Yeah, basically I go out of my way to tell wingnuts that they’re cowards and traitors for supporting the things they support. It’s a hobby.
This has led me to do some historical research lately, because nothing’s more fun than telling a teabagger “The Federalist Papers disagree with you, asshole. Why do you hate America?”
So, funny thing – turns out the Declaration of Independence specifically spells out the exact things that England did that gave them the right to declare independence. And the first several are all based around the King’s refusal to allow the colonies to create law. The very first one:
In summary, Thomas Jefferson supports health care reform, and teabaggers hate America and its founding principles. Discuss.
MikeTheZ
General consensus at GOS is Vitter’s full of crap on saying the bill is going back to the House. And the vote moves on.
MattR
@MikeTheZ: I feel bad for the clerk. Hopefully she has help and has not been going all night. Imagine the amount of time saved if she could just say “who is breaking with their party or is not going to vote? anyone? ok. great.”

@FormerSwingVoter:
So, is this approach making them extra livid with livid berries?

@MattR: She seems to be as sick of this as anyone. Senator Whitehouse just brought in snacks, which has caused a delay. Hope he brought enough for the whole class…
PeakVT
WTH does each Senator’s name need to be called out? Narcissistic jackasses.
MikeTheZ
@PeakVT: Some kind of tradition I suppose. Definitely slows things down. House would be through with this nonsense by now (then again, there’s way more wingnuts there to come up with way more amendments…)

Harry Reid up now asking to adjourn for the next 7 hours. Apparently McConnell has agreed that amendments can only go up to 2 PM
tomorrowtoday. So the end of this nonsense now has a set time. And I’m off to bed.But before that, don’t believe the AP reports floating around that the bill is going back to the House. They just played stenographer for Vitter without fact checking.

@Arclite: The books are awesome. I haven’t seen the show. Full disclosure, I love me some vampires–but I fucking hate Twilight.
@Kristine: I am a huge fan of the original comic. I didn’t hate the movie–in my review, I said if one could watch it without knowing the material source, it was a decent movie. However, Keanu was completely wrong to be Constantine for so many reasons. If one thought of it as Constantine from the comics, one could easily want to poke someone’s eye out with a pitchfork.
@Cain: Um, I watched that, too. I don’t remember any vampires in it! Oh, wait, sorry. That was Moonlighting!
