Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The worst democrat is better than the best republican.

In short, I come down firmly on all sides of the issue.

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

Republicans can’t even be trusted with their own money.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

“woke” is the new caravan.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

I was promised a recession.

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

đŸŽ¶ Those boots were made for mockin’ đŸŽ”

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

… among the most cringeworthy communications in the history of the alphabet!

Thanks for reminding me that Van Jones needs to be slapped.

We’ll be taking my thoughts and prayers to the ballot box.

It’s the corruption, stupid.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Despite his magical powers, I don’t think Trump is thinking this through, to be honest.

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

DeSantis transforms Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

Trump’s legal defense is going to be a dumpster fire inside a clown car on a derailing train.

An unpunished coup is a training exercise.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

He’s being smart, though. I’d be perfectly content for Republicans to start taking this approach.

C’mon, Cole, he was just playing eleventy dimensional chess with his own caucus and all those grandmas getting heart palpitations over plug-pulling were his pawns.

That gives me a thought! Instead of all these cheesy back-room deals and arm-twisting, what if a center-right Democrat–say, Max Baucus–could have sat down with an old-school Republican like Grassley and worked out a health care bill that reflected a consensus view? :P

Well, somebody’s got his finger in the wind. How long until the rest of the idiots on the SS GOP all run to the other side of the ship and capsize the thing for good?

BTW — got a Bobby Jindal plea for funds email telling me to read my Consitution and quick send money to repeal healthcare reform before the gopocalypse. I’ve written him a return letter stating I’m be using my money to instead purchase the insurance I’ll now be able to afford for the first time in 10 years. I tried to remain civil, but that’s never been my strong suit. Motherfuckers.

While I’m sure the GOPers will be spinning this so hard they could be an alternative energy source, I don’t think it’ll be as easy for them as the stimulus flip-flop a lot of them did. For one thing, most people had no idea the “American Recovery and Reinvestment Act” written on the big checks was in fact evil soshulist stimulus. But more important, that wasn’t happening during an election campaign. For most of them, if they try to pull a Grassley, they’ll have an opponent asking “then why did you vote against it?” and perhaps more important, pointing out to the teabaggers that their Republican is saying nice things about the anti-American Obamacare instead of demanding complete repeal and is therefore a RINO who must be destroyed.

But I’ve always been an optimist.

(Not that I think any of this will cause trouble for Grassley; he’s too well entrenched, but I doubt anyone who isn’t already a lock for re-election will be able to get away with it.)

    @Edward G. Talbot:

yeah, he also supported mandates before he opposed them too.

Even more fun is the inconvenient truth that Republicans used to love mandates (and not just the Larry Craig kind): “Health bill included big Republican idea: individual mandate”.

“The truth is this is a Republican idea,” said Linda Quick , president of the South Florida Hospital and Health care Association. She said she first heard the concept of the “individual mandate” in a Miami speech in the early 1990s by Sen. John McCain , a conservative Republican from Arizona , to counter the “Hillarycare” the Clintons were proposing.
    …
McCain did not embrace the concept during his 2008 election campaign, but other leading Republicans did, including Tommy Thompson , secretary of Health and Human Services under President George W. Bush .

So is the GOP going to twist itself into a knot and suggest that health mandates are cool if they come from the state plans, but un-American if they are part of a federal plan?

Oh yeah, and Mitt Romney loved individual health mandates when he was pushing for the Massachusetts health care overhaul.

I think the Republicans are starting to put their little noses in the air and realize that the stench is coming from them.

As the public becomes more educated about the bill, and starts to feel some relief and benefit, more and more Republicans will start taking credit for bits and pieces. I think they are begining to realize November may not produce the results they thought they had in the bag…

OT: I spent the day emailing fellow Virginians to start an email and phone campaign against our out-of-control Attorney General. So, we will begin against our Governor.

I like to take Republicans at their word. (ha ha) Haven’t they told us time and time again that they were locked out of the process and that hcr was not bipartisan? If they didn’t have any input, how did Grassley’s idea get in? Care to answer that Grassley? No, I didn’t think so.

This. It’s coming – and probably within days. Grassley didn’t say exactly what’s being bandied about here (his opponent’s campaign manager did), but it’s still close enough, and a precursor of what’s to come.

BTW – his opponent is Roxanne Conlin, and in light of the millions of dollars Chuckles is getting from out of state, a few dollars her way would be greatly appreciated. I’ve known Roxanne for years and years – she’s a solid, competent progressive.

I really don’t think that they’ll be able to pull off the Good Ideas = GOP, Bad Ideas = Dems dance. Not after they fought so hard and so long against this bill. People will notice. Hell, their own constituents will notice. Or maybe I’m underestimating the power of the Republican lie machine.

I gotta say, Alex, I think it won’t matter if they think they can pull it off. They always go for it anyway. And I think we’re both underestimating if not the power of the R lie machine, then at least the force of the reality nullifying density field that surrounds so many American voters.

My deepest wishes that everything turns out well for you. If you do not have insurance (and it reads that way to me), get on a fresher thread and tell people what’s happening. There are a lot of very smart people hanging out here, and very nice ones too.
I assume you are a lurker because I don’t really recognize your handle. Don’t be shy. I’ll be reading on this thread for awhile if there is anything you want to say. And God’s good graces upon you.
