The panic is beginning to set in just a hair with regards to my lost job. I was totally fine until I realized that OH MY GOD I was going to have to come up with money to get the cats their litter on an ongoing basis. Not to mention food. Apropos of nothing in particular: All the taglines are great, but I wonder if “shock troops for the Unitarian jihad” shouldn’t be “shock troops for the United Church of Christ jihad.” That is Obama’s denomination (or was, until he had to distance himself from Rev. It’s been four days since the Legion of Doom has triumphed, and I can already see the changes.
Imagine my surprise waking up this morning to discover that my only options were to drive on tax-funded, government built, centrally planned ‘free’ways (an Orwellian term designed to hide their true cost in blood and money), or ‘public’ (ala socialist) transit. Granted, the trains generally run on time, but you know who else made the trains run on time? Mussolini, that’s who. And he was best friends with Hitler. So it all comes full circle, Comrades.
So, I recommend putting a reinforced steel battering ram on the front end of your car and refusing to use the ‘government’ planned roads. I’m a free American, gosh darn it, and that means I’ll drive where I want, even if it’s through 16 backyards, my neighbor’s living room and den, and over Mrs. Henderson’s dog Fluffy. Hey, not my fault. He was free to dodge my car, and he was a useless parasitic sponge anyway. Always begging for food, sleeping all day, and refusing to even look for a job. He probably voted for Obama too.

The only advice I can think of to share from my experience of moving 5 times in the last 15 years is for you to have someone keep Tunch and Lily out of the new house until you’re actually moved in. That way no tails get tromped on and no pets get into the street. This advice is translated from my conviction that I only stay sane if my husband and my kids are in a different part of town or even better, a different state, when we move into a new house. That way my kids don’t get stepped on, tripped over or run over in the street, and my husband and I stay married, because we don’t argue over where everything is going in the house when it’s just going to end up where I want it, in the end, anyway.

J.C. really should have Trademarked “Peak Wing Nut” – keep things like this from happening without him getting a piece of the action.
Morning folks. Just got back from Gin and Tacos – and they have a new terminology that is relevent to the present era.
It’s called “peak wingnut,” and references the concept of peak oil (that we’re at the peak of our oil reserves and soon will be drawing on the remaining 50% of oil).
bemused
I called Michele Bachmann’s office & asked when we were going to hear her come out strongly condemning the violent rhetoric & incidents that she herself has been stoking.
I called John Boehner’s office. His staffer played that equivalency game, Viet Nam protesters, etc do the same. He said his boss & R’s have been on tv & sent press releases numerous times condemning violence & what more can they do. I said too little, too weak, too late. The staffer said they don’t want to make too much of an issue of it by talking about it too much & increasing the incidents. I then said that after unleashing & encouraging the crazies, is he saying the R leadership can’t control them?
Interesting morning.

HCR Question –
I’m beating down some Repubs on another board and the following has happened from several posters.
The question is will Congress have to be in the new HCR plans?
I post section 1312, section D, specifically this part:
“(i) REQUIREMENT- Notwithstanding any other provision of law, after the effective
date of this subtitle, the only health plans that the Federal Government may
make available to Members of Congress and congressional staff with respect to
their service as a Member of Congress or congressional staff shall be health
plans that are–”
Several people then pull this little move and quote this part:
“may
make available to Members of Congress”
and say it’s all a big trap and Congress MAY get this insurance but is not REQUIRED to get it.
I’ve beaten on them with my ugly stick for a while but I’m guessing Hannity or Rush has called this talking point because they just won’t back off it.
Any thoughts on shutting it down?

Reconciliation Bill passes Senate, will move back to the House.
Martin
@Corner Stone: It means that the federal government, if it provides health plans at all, must provide such plans.
‘May’ doesn’t mean they can offer alternate plans, but it does mean they can offer no plan at all, which dumps everyone into the same individual mandate as everyone else.
These idiots don’t even know what ‘may’ means.

Eric Cantor is claiming that somebody shot at his office a few days ago.
Only it’s not an office of his, it’s a consultant group.
Only there’s no bullet hole in the building anywhere.
Only there’s no police report aparently.
Only nobody in the vicinity has any information on this.
That guy has always reminded me of a used-car dealer stereotype, so I’m not the best person to evaluate this, but as we used to say in the Army, if it smells like bullshit, looks like bullshit, piles up like bullshit, well then…
Sentient Puddle
@Corner Stone: I’d point out the word “only” that precedes “may” in that part. That word makes it kind of unambiguous.
MikeTheZ
@soonergrunt: You forgot he waited 3 days to discuss this.
Calliope Jane
@Corner Stone:
I’m thinking “only” in that sentence makes it pretty clear that that’s the only insurance offered to members of Congress by the Federal Government. “May” in this sentence might imply, actually, that the Federal Government is not required to offer health insurance. If the Federal Government chooses to do so, then the only plan must be this plan. Plus, there’s a “shall” in the latter part of that sentence — that’s the absolute portion. “Shall be health plans that are . . . ” whatever follows that quote is what the health plans are required to be.
Calouste
@Corner Stone:
Well of course Congresscritters are not REQUIRED to buy the Congressional plan. They can go onto the private market and buy a plan like everybody else is allowed to whether they have employer covered health insurance or not, except most of everybody else can’t afford to buy health insurance on the private market and most millionaire Congrescritters can. If the law FORCED Congresscritters to enroll in the Congresssional plan to the exclusion of everything else, now THAT might be approaching the communism the right wing is going on about but doesn’t know what the term exactly means. But it doesn’t.
Corner Stone
@Calliope Jane: That was my first tact as well.
They keep repeating that Congress “MAY” be put in this plan but nothing “REQUIRES” Congress to be in this plan.
I have yet to coax out what they think else will happen but I think they don’t care what the answer is as long as they can say, “HA! Congress isn’t REQUIRED so they could go off and do something better because they know this plan is crap!”

@Calouste:
I guess my other question about this is – if your employer offers a plan don’t you have to take it? You can’t opt out if it’s offered right?
That was one of the complaints some people had – that a smaller number of people would be in the exchanges because their employer may offer a plan, no matter how crappy.
So, if the Federal Government offers Congress and staff a plan that fits under the law’s definition – don’t they have to take it? Or other option for them is?
Seanly
Someone shot at Cantor’s DC office – now the police will pay attention to tea bagger violence! The shooting is the fault of the Democratic Party of course –
This has me full of confuse. How have Democrats used the threats made against them as politic weapons? Reporting threats (and actual acts) is the proper response…
Sounds to me like someone has a little problem with projection. His folks have been fanning the flames of half-crazed tea baggers. He shouldn’t be surprised when the fire leaps from the fireplace and the drapes & couch catch fire.
bemused
@soonergrunt:
The new spin from Cantor is that Dem’s are fanning the flames by talking about the incidents. That’s just what Boehner’s staffer said to me earlier this am.
Calliope Jane
@Corner Stone: Well, they sound delightful :-))
How bizarre, really. I’m going with Calouste; nothing requires members to accept the plan. Don’t this repubs also use “may only” in their normal lives? You tell a kid — “You may only ride your bike down to that mailbox and back.” They don’t have to ride that far, or they can choose not to ride at all, but if they do choose to ride, they can’t go past the mailbox. “You may go to the mall only if you call first.” You’re not ordering them to go to the mall, but, if they go, they have to call.
YellowJournalism
@bemused: You were probably very polite but firm, and now your call is listed under “serious threat” so they have something to bawl about during their next Fox appearance.
@soonergrunt: Really? And of course the news media is all over that part of the story, not the press conference Cantor gave…

They see liberals getting threats and publicizing them as wrong when it is not. Let’s say this did happen and Cantor’s office was shot at. First off, we don’t know for sure it was a far left extremist that did this. It could be a tea bagger mad that Cantor let this vote happen, it could be somebody attacking his ethnicity or it could be that he has REP. in front of his name regardless of party.

By the way, this whole “why isn’t congress required to get on the plan?” shit is a red herring argument. It’s a meta-point. You demonstrate nothing useful if you can somehow successfully prove section 1312 doesn’t actually bind congress to the exchanges. All you have is a shaky implication that glibly presents itself as a Serious Point.
If I’m arguing with someone and they insist on pressing this, this is probably where I’d go. Haven’t gotten that far yet. They usually shut up once I go 1312 on them. Only one who pressed on said “Well wait, do we even know what these ‘exchanges’ are? They could be anything!” Which was even more moronic than these Washington Times/NY Post articles.

Frum is invited to leave the Enterprise Institute after he went to town criticizing the GOP. They really do not tolerate dissent eh?
I see JenJen got there first.

Tea Party Blogger Hints That Pelosi’s Life Is In Danger, Warns of “A Thousand Little Waco’s”
This is the guy that told all his followers to break windows; and who happens to be on Social Security disability payments while he rails against the big bad gummint.
MikeTheZ
@licensed to kill time: He hates the gummint so much, lets cut off his social security payments.

So, the Richmond police put out a statement
I doubt anyone in the MSM will call out Eric Cantor for his misleading statements.
******************
The Richmond Police Department is investigating an act of vandalism at the Reagan Building, 25 E. Main St., Richmond, Virginia. A first floor window was struck by a bullet at approximately 1 a.m. on Tuesday, March 23. The building, which has several tenants including an office used by Congressman Eric Cantor, was unoccupied at the time.
A Richmond Police detective was assigned to the case. A preliminary investigation shows that a bullet was fired into the air and struck the window in a downward direction, landing on the floor about a foot from the window. The round struck with enough force to break the windowpane but did not penetrate the window blinds. There was no other damage to the room, which is used occasionally for meetings by the congressman.
The Richmond Police Department is sharing information about the incident with appropriate law enforcement agencies.
At this time there are no suspects.

@licensed to kill time: A thousand little Wacos? Do they remember which side won?
It’s a pity Sherman didn’t finish what he started.

@Rhoda: Was just about to link that as well. Cantor is a turd.

@Martian Buddy:
Do you trust them? I don’t.
What if by “work on the bill” they mean screw around and hold it up until next December?
Olympia Snowe seems to move at a glacial pace, and she seems to be indecisive.
What if they put their finger to the wind and decide this is not popular?
What if Rush Limbaugh issues a directive to that effect?
It’s nice that they’ve come around to trusting Democrats, but they’ve completely lost my trust in the process.

His other quote from that TP post:
How considerate of him. Just like Mookie saved Danny Aiello and his sons in Do the “Right Thing” by throwing the trash can through the plate glass window.

This sounds like an “I shot a round into the air, it fell to earth, I know not where” kind of thing.

Judd Gregg could get offended and storm off….hold another one of those weird press conferences where denounces the President, and rejects his offer. That was interesting to watch. Obama responded how? One slightly raised eyebrow? It was the Judd Show.
Really. I can’t stand the drama swirling around conservatives.
They’re constantly overwrought. I don’t think they’re productive, working in groups.

Looks like Obama is getting into the whole “I dare you” thing:link:
Looks like bipartisanship has been shelved for the time being.

This is amusing: Mich. Governor directs AG to intervene against HIMSELF!
Summary: Michigan’s AG, Republican Mike Cox — which sounds like a Porky’s joke, “We have a phone call for Mike Cox at the courtesy telephone! Has anyone seen Mike Cox?” — has decided to jump on the Fox Party / Al Teada gravy train, and join the Florida suit against the new HCR law.
Jennifer Granholm, in response, and in her capacity as the Democratic Governor of said state has ordered my cocks – sorry, I’m puerile, I mean Mike Cox — to intervene AGAINST the same case on behalf of the state of Michigan.
Surely, you can see the dilemma. And don’t call me Surely.

I believe the official reason Frum left Dick Cheney’s favorite speechification throne room is to “Spend more time pallin’ around with terrorists.”
I’m beginning to think Bachman was half-right–the Republicans have re-education camps. They probably have their own better-than-ordinary rendition transport system too.
But who gets to be Pol Pot?

Well, I have applications in with my company in Florida, Georgia, and California. The problem with staying local to OKC is that nobody’s frickin hiring right now. The only job offer I’ve had was at $13.50/hr, w/o benefits. That’s less than half what I make now.
My wife was unemployed for a year until just recently, so we used up our savings. Something’s gotta give.

Whatever you think of The Mordor Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (and I too have some problems with it, no public option for starters), death threats are completely uncalled for.

@kay: I think Captain Jack Sparrow said it best: “Me? I’m dishonest, and a dishonest man you can always trust to be dishonest.”
When it comes to doing the right thing, I trust the GOP about as far as I could throw Limbaugh–but I do believe they have a sincere desire to be re-elected. They thought that lockstep opposition to HCR would do the trick, and, well, we’ve seen how well that worked out for them. Right now, I’d imagine that at least some of them are pondering the fact that even the teabaggers hate the banksters, and wondering if maybe they aren’t marching lockstep into another ambush.
In fact, I think I’ll give my wingnut congressman a call about finance reform. Stranger things have happened.

If you moved to Georgia, you’d have to change your handle to peachgrunt. But that’s a small price to pay.
Seriously, good luck with hearing back and having something well-paying (and interesting!) come your way. I feel dreadful for anyone who’s unemployed, or underemployed, or about to be laid off, or looking for work right now (or has a spouse/partner in that situation). I know that includes a lot of people who are regular posters here.

@Martian Buddy:
I’m talking about deliberate bad faith here :)
Ya know, A PLAN to hoodwink the affable Chris Dodd into screwing around for months while they accuse him of wrecking the financial system, all the while pretending they are working.
I’m really patient, it’s my only good quality, until…I’m not patient. I think watching Olympia Snowe dick around for 6 months did me in.
I have had it with them. They’re like overly dramatic 15 year olds.
Some people can’t function in groups. Conservatives clearly are not suited to productive, positive forward motion within a group.
Mark my words. Judd Gregg will have some epic hissy fit.

Good luck John, and be very careful with your shoulder!

I have been out most of the day, so haven’t caught up on the threads around here; has anyone commented on David Frum’s firing/ resignation from AEI?
As a former conservative myself until the mid-90’s I honestly empathize- not agree with, just empathize.
I like the comment from Bruce Bartlett, via Sullivan:
But now I see that I was just the first to suffer from a closing of the conservative mind. Rigid conformity is being enforced, no dissent is allowed, and the conservative brain will slowly shrivel into dementia if it hasn’t already.

Anyone else see the twitterfight going on between Ezra & Glenzilla right now?

I was only following Glenn, so it had this weird one sided thing, like Robert DeNiro talking to his mirror-
“you tawkin’ ta me?”

@kay: Perhaps I’m being too optimistic, but I don’t think that Dodd is anyone’s fool. He passed the bill out of committee on a straight party-line vote when the GOP members tried one of their 500-amendment crapfloods–that suggests to me that he’s not a Baucus and he won’t pursue bipartisanship to the point of self-immolation.
Don’t get me wrong; I’m sure the GOP will try to shiv us at some point or another because they suffer from chronic backstabbing disorder and zero-sum is the only game they know how to play. On this issue, though, I don’t think they can afford “kill the bill” or “indefinite debate” levels of obstructionism, so they’ll have to be satisfied with tax cuts and watering the regulatory mechanisms down.
