Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

In my day, never was longer.

The line between political reporting and fan fiction continues to blur.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

“I was told there would be no fact checking.”

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Everything is totally normal and fine!!!

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

T R E 4 5 O N

We can show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

Hey hey, RFK, how many kids did you kill today?

… pundit janitors mopping up after the gop

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

If you voted for Trump, you don’t get to speak about ethics, morals, or rule of law.

One of our two political parties is a cult whose leader admires Vladimir Putin.

When we show up, we win.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Roe is not about choice. It is about freedom.

It really is rough trying to figure out just who is a terrorist and who is a patriot these days. I say we send ’em to Gitmo and subject them to some frat boy pranks. Ya know- splash a little water in their faces.

    Let me help you, patriots are white and terrorists are brown. A coloring book could really help illustrate it.

    Don’t forget to crush their children’s testicles. You know. Just to play it safe.

    It’s not that hard to tell the difference.

    White, Christian, militiamen = freedom lovin’ Murkins.

    Brown, Muslim, doing anything = terrorists.

    What’s so hard to understand?

    Love the comment from Riehl:

    Just three days ago, members of the group were assisting LE in a rescue search. Must be some really evil people there, what?

    Hamas also runs food banks and free clinics. Guess all those rocket attacks and bombings were carried out by a completely different group.

    @Violet:

    Works for me…Too bad my kids are grown, otherwise I would have bought them the book, “My Daddy and Mommy are Freedom Fighters.”

    That goes with the second book in the series, “Mohammed’s Mommy and Daddy are Terrorists.”

    No matter that Mohammed’s parents pay their taxes, faithfully pray, own their homes, and follow all laws. As the book explains to young children, their coloring is a bit off. A sure sign….

    @Violet:

    Exactly. Is anyone really surprised by the reactions? Remember, these loons who were arrested are Real ‘Murkans who love Jeebus and hate the commienazimuslimtraitor from Kenya who seized the country in order to turn it into a replica of Democratic Kampuchea.

    Jose Padilla was a filthy moooslim wetback who should be waterboarded on general principle.

    This isn’t difficult to grasp, people.

    While you’re at the “water splashing,” see if they can tell us where Jimmy Hoffa is buried. If they claim they don’t know, keep “splashing water” until they do remember. Also don’t forget some photographs of a little hiney-weeny action as mementos of the frat boy fun housing.

    This is what it’s boiled down to after 200 plus years as a country and as the lone superpower in the world. A left right pissing match on who has the craziest crazies. The results aren’t all in, but the wingnuts seen to have the upper hand. No wonder the world both fears us and worries what stupid shit we’ll do next.

    @General Egali Tarian Stuck:

    “Seem to have the upper hand”? Other than some nuts running around the mountains setting fire to ski resorts (where they deliberately avoid killing anyone), since when has the left been violent in this country? It’s been 35 years since the Symbionese Liberation Army met its demise.

    Last time I looked, wanting to start a civil war (insane as it is) was not a crime.

    I doubt that, but a conspiracy to kill law enforcement officials certainly is.

    No no John, if they are sent to gitmo that means they ARE terrorists. Let me explain. Being a person accused of terrorism by the government + physical presence at the detention facility at gitmo = Terrorist. These people thus having been definitively established to be terrorists we are then free to do anything we want to them for any length of time and anyone who says otherwise obviously agrees with the terrorists and wants to support their goals.

    I know it can be a little hard to adjust after years of hearing all that assumed innocent until proven guilty and habeas corpus clap trap so I hope this helps.

    @Comrade Mary: Slade also did Cum On Feel the Noize first, which Quiet Riot then covered as well.

    And, obligatory posting of my fave Slade song. Where’s my lighter?

    This reaction from the right is predictable and boring.

    I’m not quite sure whether to see this as a good development or a bad one. One the bad side: We are back to the 1990’s with right wingers defending every law abiding citizen’s right to plot violent rebellion against the government.

    On the plus side: At last right wingers are waking up to concerns about civil liberties. Maybe we can work with them to help reign in the abuses of the PATRIOT Act (at least in domestic application).

    On the plus side: At last right wingers are waking up to concerns about civil liberties.

    But remember how quickly they morphed from militias-are-patriotic to shutup-conform-obey-you-traitor-hippie as soon as Bush took office? Along with the neck-snapping turn from Klintoon’s-dick-must-be-investigated to Preznit-is-unquestioned-emperor. They have no sense of shame about their hypocrisy and inconsistency, and I’m not hopeful that they’ll develop one.

    Everything switches 180 degrees when one of their tribe is in the White House. It’s the difference between a principle and a tactic.
