Corker, Cornyn and Mark Kirk are running away from repealing healthcare reform.
Cornyn yesterday:
Asked if he advises Republican Senate candidates to call for repealing the law, Cornyn said: “Candidates are going to test the winds in their own states. … In some places, the health care bill is more popular than others.”
“Democrats think by passing the bill they’ll be able to get it behind them and change the subject to something else like jobs,” said Texas Sen. John Cornyn at a news briefing Monday. “But this will do the opposite. This will make sure that health care is the number one issue that the election is won or lost on in November.”

after 18 months of telling us that HCR was being enacted against the will of the people, now they tell us they need to go test the wind ?
they were lying then, or they’re lying now.
or both ?
Said the straight man to the late man
Where have you been
I’ve been here and I’ve been there
And I’ve been in between.
I Test The Wind
My words are all carried away
I test the wind
The wind does not hear
The wind cannot hear.

See what happens when you are able to force Republicans to confront reality? All those strident words just melt away like they were never uttered in the first place. This is what happens when you ignore their histrionics and do what has to be done. You force them to play catch up but just when they are catching up Obama opens another front for them to deal with.
Our Pres is far from perfect but I am liking what I have seen so far. IMO he sure beats the hell out of the last 5, 6 or 7 presidents we’ve had but I will wait until the end of his term to declare him a success.

Of course health care is more popular in some areas than in others. And when they say they are going to “test the winds” they hopefully mean they are going to ask questions of their constituents and actually listen to the answers.
It would be nice to see those folks actually have representation.
Still, it would be fun to watch the Republicans march out in lock step and endlessly repeat stuff that will not get them reelected.
And speaking of “lock step,” there are some subtle signs that some Repubs are starting to think for themselves and acting accordingly, instead of slavishly following the party line. I think this may be because being so strong against health care reform was such a losing game for them. Who wants to conform to a losing strategy?

No fair winning the thread with the first comment.

They’re a bunch of hypocritical bozos, plain and simple. I love that during the Bush years it was “polls don’t matter, leadership isn’t about polls, real men don’t care about stinkin polls” and now it’s “a few polls show that it isn’t popular enough for us to support at this time.”
The GOP assumes that most Americans don’t pay much attention to notice how much they completely contradict themselves from year to year. Unforutnately for the rest of us that has been a pretty safe bet.

@Linda Featheringill: I googled around for a “we don’t rely on polls, we rely on principle” quote from Cornyn, but couldn’t find one in the few seconds I looked. I’m sure he’s said it a million times, especially in relation to HCR. Now, he’s poll-testing.

This is going to be a fun summer. Watching the teabaggers show up at townhalls screaming for repeal.
And then you add in the demension of the RNC epic fail and energized bases on both sides and this could be a really fascinating election year.
Comrade javafascist
I would love to know what the GOP thinks is going to happen to all that rage and paranoia they fed for the last 18 months. Bygones? They’ve unleashed a world of crazy and it won’t go back into the box quietly.
Peter J
Time to troll the teabaggers. Join your local teabagging club and start a movement demanding that they should push their republican congresscritters to support the repeal. And if the congresscritter won’t, start a campaign for your local teabagger leader to run in the general election, or just a campaign to make teabaggers stay at home.
Probably shouldn’t use the term teabagging though.

When danger reared its ugly head, they bravely turned their tails and fled…
Cornyn: I didn’t!

We’ll get to watch what happens when someone dismounts a tiger in real time, methinks.

Two GOP Senators: Repeal isn’t going to happen.

HCR is more popular in some places than others…
…Hmmm, are they suggesting that what flies in the states of the old Confederacy and the sparsely populated cowboy states like Wyoming aren’t necessarily indicative of where the entire nation’s votes are?
Unpossible.

Ah, yes, brave Mark Kirk. I had no doubt he would slowly back away from repeal. The Senate campaign should be fun.
Comrade javafascist
@Cat Lady: And the tiger doesn’t much care who it eats. I’ll watch from a distance, thanks.

King Crimson! Nice!
Sorry, please continue with comments regarding the actual post.

A lot of the anger last summer was generated by the seniors. Each week that goes by that life continues as normal for them will make them less fearful. By November a significant percentage of them will either have received cheques or know someone who has to help with the donut hole. Try selling repeal to them then.
Imagine an ad running in a place like Florida saying:
Republicans love the donut hole
In 2003, republicans voted to open the donut hole
In 2010, democrats voted to close the donut hole
Republicans want to repeal that law
Republicans love the donut hole

@Toni:
The dim amongst the electorate will think you are talking about breakfast pastry, and after all, who doesn’t love a big bag of donut holes? Let’s not run ads that associate Republicans with yummy but fattening little treats. They make give us all heart attacks, but not in that way.
