Fuking Dookies. When I got out of grad school in 85 and went to work for Club Fed back in DC, the last Great Recession was still lingering so it seems every Duke grad for five years also went to work for the gubmint.
I have *never* met a more snottish, obnoxious group of people in my life as I did with the several dozens of Dookies I had the misfortune of working with or meeting because of work in my life. The whole “our shit don’t stink because we went to a ‘special’ school” attitude of Dookies made everybody learn to have the school with the fervor of the most loyal Maryland grad.
I’m torn between WV and Duke. I’ve got ties to both. I get the Duke hate, but I’ve always had a soft spot for them. But I love WV as well.
I guess I’ll be happy no matter who wins. Win-win.

Hi,all. Nothing to do with basketball, but since it’s an open thread I really want to thank everyone who sent good wishes to my cousin and his family as he fights for his life. I went to see him this afternoon and he looked really awful but not, to my untrained eye, near death. It was hard to understand him — meds or the disease, I don’t know, but he was mostly mumbling. I had been warned that he probably wouldn’t know me, and he seemed to be unsure who I was, but as soon as I identified myself he said, rather petulantly, “I *know* who you are!” He would talk quite rationally and optimistically about getting back into [his sport] soon and then in the next sentence talk about how the ceiling was moving and “coming towards him” and it was all wavy like the ocean.
I called his mom after I left the hospital and she said they had actually been getting ready to put him in rehab on Thursday when he was diagnosed with severe liver failure. The doctors have told them to prepare for the worst. I guess they are trying to find the right medication that can halt the damage and allow his liver to start regenerating, but the fear is that there’s too much damage and it’s too late. If they can stabilize him, though, it’s off to rehab for however long it takes. His parents, both in their 80s, are beating themselves up and wondering where they failed, and my heart just breaks for them.
These are not close blood relatives — they’re like third cousins once and twice removed. I only met them about 17 years ago doing some genealogical research. But they live in Atlanta, they’ve included me in every Thanksgiving, Xmas and Fourth of July since 1992, and they took me in a few years ago to recuperate after my quadruple bypass surgery. So I owe them a lot. I’m sick at heart at what they’re going through.
Sorry for the long self-indulgent post, and thank you for your comments, thoughts, prayers, etc. I don’t really follow basketball but I hope *everyone*’s team wins!

I’m not doubting you but I have never seen any mention of that on any of his bio’s. They do indicate that he coached service teams and when I was in Korea, 67-68 we did have full blown hoop, football and baseball at the division and higher level.
Upon graduation from USMA, he was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Field Artillery. He served at Fort Carson, Colorado, the Republic of South Korea, and at the United States Military Academy Preparatory School. During this period, he began to hone his coaching skills by working with service teams and by serving as head basketball coach at the Prep School. In 1974, Captain Krzyzewski resigned from the Army and immediately joined Bobby Knight´s staff as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Indiana. That basketball season, the Indiana basketball team posted a 31-1 overall record.

this latest round of flogging the bishops, plundering the pope, creaming the cardinal….
as much as i have been, and will be, someone who sees the catholic church and most if not all organized religions as deeply flawed and destructive, i just can’t get into getting pissed off about it…
i mean, the catholics aren’t going to change, we know this, they might bend like a tall building sways in the wind, in a controlled manor consistent with its design. that is the most that can be gained.
in the mean time, i just don’t feel the rage, or the thrill of expressing it to an institution that blatantly, and truly doesn’t care what anyone outside a certain small group deep inside thinks.
i know there should at least be some shadenfrude, some sense of justice, some sort of something that makes me care. i just know it won’t change much, and the anger, the story, will recede until it cycles back again….
I’m curious- have any of you caught the new taglines yet? I put up about ten new ones today.
As far as basketball goes, I know that the current WVU team is better, but I just really enjoyed the style of play of Beilein’s teams. Just seemed so much more fun.
BTW- Watched a game with people the other day, and I was absolutely shocked how many people watching the game with opinions on the sport had no idea what a 1-3-1 or, for that matter, any kind of “zone” defense was. Just no clue on the concept.
Some Americans who say they have been sympathetic to Democratic causes in the past — some even voted for Democratic candidates — are angry with President Obama and his party
So in reading the story, they name 3 folks, only one of whom says she actually voted for Obama. Another guy who describes himself as a rapper and political activist said he liked Obama in the beginning, but voted for McCain.
But apparently this indicates a growing trend because people who never voted for Obama don’t like him now, and some of them joined the Tea Party. Good job CNN.

My daughter went to a magnet elementary right up the street from NC State, so she got serenaded a few times by their cheerleaders and Mr and Mrs Wulf. One time I just had to take her pulse, and asked about her feelings on Carolina basketball–she responded like a typical 7yr old girl, ” I dunno, they’re okay I guess…” But a second after “Duke” came out of my mouth, she erupted “BOOO DOOOK!” I was stunned, my sports allegiances lie some 500 miles north of here–they really do get to ’em early in these parts.
I told this story to a Carolina grad, who said, “Clearly, she’s a very intelligent girl.”

I think that the officials did a good job. What a great game! Butler U only has 4200 students. So there is something to this Cinderella stuff. It’s been a good tournament, very hard on the favorites (although Butler was favored in this one.)
Got no dog in the hunt, so it will be interesting to see who I want in the second game. I want WV because I’m sick of Duke, prefer Butler winning it all, and I want Duke because I admire sustained excellence and am suspect of Bob Huggins except as a basketball coach. (No offense, John.)

Except for Woody Strode and the actress who played his sister. But I guess they ran out of persistence, because they had Woody playing two roles. First he’s the king of Ethiopia, but later he’s an ordinary litter bearer for Bithia.
Surely, SURELY the king already went home. You don’t suppose those Egyptians accepted all that tribute and then pressed him into service?? Oh, wait, that’s Washington.
Don’t have it on Blu-ray, but I’ve got it safely tucked away on the DVR–along with Kagemusha and Stray Dog–from the Kurosawa-fest on TCM last month. One of the few movies I would consider getting a Blu-ray player for.

The four corners sucked but it forced a positive change.
burnspbesq
Michigan State is in a bit of trouble. Butler is getting the tempo it wants, playing solid D, and getting to the free throw line.
Can I just say that these Miller Lite commercials suck the big one?
General Egali Tarian Stuck
Just cleaned firefox completely off the computer and getting Bj info back on clipboard.
And BTW, Duke is a bunch a trust fund pansies. GO WVU!!

this latest round of flogging the bishops, plundering the pope, creaming the cardinal….
as much as i have been, and will be, someone who sees the catholic church and most if not all organized religions as deeply flawed and destructive, i just can’t get into getting pissed off about it…
i mean, the catholics aren’t going to change, we know this, they might bend like a tall building sways in the wind, in a controlled manor consistent with its design. that is the most that can be gained.
in the mean time, i just don’t feel the rage, or the thrill of expressing it to an institution that blatantly, and truly doesn’t care what anyone outside a certain small group deep inside thinks.
i know there should at least be some shadenfrude, some sense of justice, some sort of something that makes me care. i just know it won’t change much, and the anger, the story, will recede until it cycles back again….
John Cole
I’m curious- have any of you caught the new taglines yet? I put up about ten new ones today.
As far as basketball goes, I know that the current WVU team is better, but I just really enjoyed the style of play of Beilein’s teams. Just seemed so much more fun.
John Cole
BTW- Watched a game with people the other day, and I was absolutely shocked how many people watching the game with opinions on the sport had no idea what a 1-3-1 or, for that matter, any kind of “zone” defense was. Just no clue on the concept.
John Cole
I’m starting to get really nervous.
flukebucket
“This blog will pay for itself” was a new one for me

@John Cole:
Just saw one. Han DID NOT shoot first! :)
Mike Kay
Not yet. Still getting the old taglines.
Mike Kay
okay, just got the new one on “all your bases..”

My Dad always used to say that Yul Brynner and Charlton Heston were two actors who never looked right in actual clothes.
That ends the similarity though. Yul Brynner was teh hawt.

CNN has a great story about “Disgruntled Dems” joining the Teabaggers:
http://www.cnn.com/2010/POLITICS/04/02/democrats.tea.party/index.html?hpt=T1
So in reading the story, they name 3 folks, only one of whom says she actually voted for Obama. Another guy who describes himself as a rapper and political activist said he liked Obama in the beginning, but voted for McCain.
But apparently this indicates a growing trend because people who never voted for Obama don’t like him now, and some of them joined the Tea Party. Good job CNN.

First one I have seen:
“Where tasty lettuce and good mustard aren’t elitist.”
Got about 10 different types of lettuce planted today. :)

I’m starting to really like Gordon Hayward.

Re new taglines: I saw “Dinky Hocker shoots smack” and thought, the kids won’t get that one.

Everytime I see that “Obama Akbar” thing, I want to respond with “Allahu Obama”. Guess it must be my unique Commie Worshipper of the One mentality.

For the movie buffs … Ran is now out on Blu-Ray.

Hey single fellas, beware, scientifically proven that women are more attractive when they are ovulating.
TMI???
John Cole
Dinky and the Dingo are both new, as well as Han Shot First.
The all your base and tasty mustard are old.
And if the tagline gets more people to read Dinky Hocker Shoots Smack, one of my favorite adolescent lit novels, more power to it.
mr. whipple
Also, too.

Watching Ten Commandments during commercials. First time I’ve seen it on H def.
Wow.
I now hate ABC for counter programming with this.
Maxwel
Worst FF game I’ve ever seen. The JV game.
Mike in NC
We’re watching while tossing out lots of lewd comments about this corny classic. Chuck Heston, E. G. Robinson, and Vincent Price in the same flick?!? Awesome.
Naturally, we’re going to go to hell, and I’ll drink to that.

There’s a game on? I’ve been busy.

@comrade scott;
can you still see the shadow of the passenger jet that flies over them wandering in the desert?
that was my favorite part of the ten commandments….but edited it out of some versions.

More from Science of Sex Appeal:
Sexiest female body shapes: waist should be average 7/10 as wide as her hips!!
EDIT: Of course for men, the more narrow is more sexy, even though any less, and it’s not likely to actually exist in nature!

I agree with the “wow,” but it’s not ABC’s fault. Blame the canonical calendar.

I told this story to a Carolina grad, who said, “Clearly, she’s a very intelligent girl.”
arguingwithsignposts
Wow, this game is exciting! WTG Butler.
lamh31
speaking of the ten commandment, it still tickles me how back in the day rather than hiring some “naturally tanned” actors, they just darkened the skin of the usual white actors.
Though for the life of me, I still don’t know how Yul Brynner got work, cause he wasn’t from America maybe…
arguingwithsignposts
Again, mid-major in the championship game! Unbelievable!

The Butler did it!

GO BUTLER !!!!!!!!

Worst FF game?
I thought it was a great game, and that the Zebras gave the benefit of the doubt to Michigan State for a good 5 minute stretch up to about 2 minutes left.
Of course, I like defense and team hoops.
fucen tarmal
butler, damn…
go get it!
btw wvu and duke, whomever emerged from butler/msu was going to be my rooting interest anyway…
go duke!
actually can we start the stanley cup playoffs yet?

Tremendous game. Butler vs WVU for all the marbles would be wonderful
burnspbesq
@MikeE:
The butler did it, in the paint, with the brass knuckles.

I think that the officials did a good job. What a great game! Butler U only has 4200 students. So there is something to this Cinderella stuff. It’s been a good tournament, very hard on the favorites (although Butler was favored in this one.)
John O
Got no dog in the hunt, so it will be interesting to see who I want in the second game. I want WV because I’m sick of Duke, prefer Butler winning it all, and I want Duke because I admire sustained excellence and am suspect of Bob Huggins except as a basketball coach. (No offense, John.)
But a personal favorite always emerges.
Can’t wait!

@burnspbesq:
Don’t have it on Blu-ray, but I’ve got it safely tucked away on the DVR–along with Kagemusha and Stray Dog–from the Kurosawa-fest on TCM last month. One of the few movies I would consider getting a Blu-ray player for.
