Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

Trump’s cabinet: like a magic 8 ball that only gives wrong answers.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Text STOP to opt out of updates on war plans.

Shut up, hissy kitty!

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

“I was told there would be no fact checking.”

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

In my day, never was longer.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

Dear elected officials: Trump is temporary, dishonor is forever.

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

When I was faster i was always behind.

It is not hopeless, and we are not helpless.

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

Compromise? There is no middle ground between a firefighter and an arsonist.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Disappointing to see gov. newsom with his finger to the wind.

There are a lot more evil idiots than evil geniuses.

It’s easy to sit in safety and prescribe what other people should be doing.

You know, there were times back in the day when I was into gaming and I would have a ping over 350 and I was ready to kill someone at Adelphia/Comcast/whoeverthehellIwasusing. Even then, though, I probably would have though launching nuclear weapons was an over-reaction for a cyber attack.

Don’t forget the now-classic Pat Buchanan response: “I wouldn’t nuke someone for hacking into my computer, no.”

When you’re to the right of Pat Buchanan, you know things aren’t going too well:

Matthews: If something is happening to our computer system, we just strike with nuclear weapons.

Buchanan: I don’t think I’d strike with nuclear weapons if they hacked into my computer, no.

Seriously. Let us not forget that the man is a recent author of some of the grossest historical revisionism to date.

    Was the Holocaust Inevitable?
    __
If Hitler were out to conquer the world, why did he not build a great fleet? Why did he not demand the French fleet when France surrendered? Germany had to give up its High Seas Fleet in 1918. Why did he build his own Maginot Line, the Western Wall, in the Rhineland, if he meant all along to invade France?
    __
If he wanted war with the West, why did he offer peace after Poland and offer to end the war, again, after Dunkirk?
    __
That Hitler was a rabid anti-Semite is undeniable. “Mein Kampf” is saturated in anti-Semitism. The Nuremberg Laws confirm it. But for the six years before Britain declared war, there was no Holocaust, and for two years after the war began, there was no Holocaust.

And this guy thinks Michelle Bachmann is the loony one.

Mackenzie Eaglen, defense analyst at the Heritage Foundation, does not agree with Squassoni[:]

The Nuclear Posture Review unnecessarily takes sovereign U.S. options off the table when responding to various types of chemical or biological attacks.
Americans intuitively understand the flaw in this approach. Special agent Jack Bauer of “24” had to thwart terrorists attempting to steal nerve gas. If this had actually occurred, the President should not tie one hand behind the nation’s back when evaluating the appropriate response to defend American citizens.

While limiting the declared use of nuclear weapons and response options, the strategy rests faith in the United States’ ability to deliver devastating conventional attacks against perpetrators. This increases both the role and value of conventional forces.

Yet Obama is busy reducing U.S. military conventional capabilities held for the past half-century.
