Tomorrow night I’m going to a fundraiser for the Open Hearth Foundation, a pagan community organization. Sunday I’m going to the Earth Day NASA tweetup at their pavilion on the Mall. Oh, and dinner tonight was vegetarian.
At this rate, I think I’m only a gay marriage and an abortion short of a librul royal flush…
Yutsano
@Redshift: If you’re not gay, you can always get one of those instant ministerships and just officiate at one, that should work just fine. Abortion you would need certain physical parts for and the need to make that very tough decision, or go to medical school and learn how to do them. In other words, there are solutions to these problems.

Might get myself in some hot water here with some commenters, but since moving to NYC I have not had the time/money to get to a gun range (been here since August). Finally found a work buddy who has land in NJ. Going to get to kill some paper Sunday. The dog will also enjoy some non-asphalt land again. I guess you can take the man out of Uncle Sam’s Misguided Children, but….
Yutsano
@Bnut:
Say no more. Explains it all right there. Or to put it another way, there is no such thing as an ex-Marine. Lord help you if you care for one still in though, that’s even rougher.
Bnut
@Yutsano
My deepest fear is that my eventual children will wind up Marines. Or even worse, the Chair Force.
Mnemosyne
@Bnut:
My husband can tell you from harsh experience that if your friend says it would be really cool to shoot a jar of rancid mayonnaise as one of your targets, it will take you about 6 months to get the smell out of your shoes, assuming you don’t have to throw them away entirely.
MTmofo
@Mnemosyne:
Heh! Did you know Marines are referred to as “jar-heads”?
Chair Force 76-82.
Yutsano
@Bnut: Better Dawgs than Zoomies in my opinion. I work with a couple of Chair Force vets, they have some severe mental breakdown issues somewhere I swear. They both pretty much act like children, then again they don’t have much of a boot camp. Golf courses? SRSLY?
@Mnemosyne: You have once again eloquently highlighted yet another reason why I think mayonnaise is one of the most vile foodstuffs on the face of the planet. Not only does it taste nasty and off to me, it’s pure fat, really can’t be cooked (I don’t buy the crab cake thing), and serves little purpose than to add calories to anything it touches. I’m not forgiving my ancestors for that culinary atrocity any time soon. Although it is supposed to be better if you make your own I guess. I don’t feel like trying.

Marines like to golf too, apparently.
Yutsano
@MTmofo: It’s Hawai’i. Once you’ve seen all the tourist traps, what the hell else are you going to do there? According to my non-golf playing mother, not a whole helluva lot.
@Bnut: Predator/drone pilots are pretty damn cool too, we have one who posted here for awhile but either downgraded to lurker status or is off doing other things. His nom de Internet escapes me at this juncture.
Bnut
@MTMofo
I loved A-10 pilots till I got strafed by one. Worked with a Combat Controller who was the shit. Other than that, AF guys are just the dudes with clean uni’s who cut in the chow hall line when I got back to the FOB.
MTmofo
@Yutsano:
Look at a simple search result
http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=en#hl=en&source=hp&q=marine+base+with+golf+course&btnG=Google+Search&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=marine+base+with+golf+course&gs_rfai=&fp=467c3568f2eec009
They are wide spread.
Bnut
One of my best friends is a serious golfer and serious Army brat (dad a CSM in the Army, 7 bases as a child). I hate golf, but he tells me military golf courses are notoriously difficult.
Yutsano
@Bnut:
Again, no need to speak further. I wanted to shoot my TV every time a single mention of Tiger Woods showed up. I freely admit I just don’t get the appeal of the game.
MTmofo
@Bnut:
FWIW: If I had been in that line I would have encouraged the REMFs to get out of your way, regardless of branch of service.
Bnut
I get the appeal. You can drink and play at the same time. My problem is I swing the club like a baseball bat. The ball goes far. Three holes over….
bago
Bnut, were you in Charlie Company up in an-Nasiriyah?
MTmofo
There is one thing that I can appreciate my last ex-wife for. Introducing me to the sounds of Nanci Griffith (saw her in Butte, MT), Joe Ely, and Robert Earl Keene (saw him in a town south of Austin).
Yutsano
@Bnut: I went golfing with a co-worker once (I later found out this was his way of trying to get me to seduce him, but I digress) and he tried his damndest to explain all the subtleties and skills behind golf. I just couldn’t get past the whole absurdity of hitting a white dimpled ball over a large green meadow over and over until it lands in a hole. I get that sporting contests are contrived (BTW you can drink while curling and among amateurs it’s even encouraged) but it just seemed a stretch too far for me. Different strokes and all that.
(See what I did there?)
I need to get to sleep and try to shake this cold I picked up in Arizona. Night y’all.
Bnut
@bago
No, i was in 4/14, an arty unit running convoy security all over, mostly from Fallujah to the KV. Then went to SOI and did my grunt shit in Haditha. Crazy times.
Alex
Two Mizzou Tigers baseball games, hopefully. It’s an itch I’ve been waiting to scratch since August. And maybe call Bob Corker and scream at him if I’m feeling frisky.

Never understood why liberals have a problem with guns.
Apropos of nothing in particular, this is hysterical: a researcher trained a bunch of rats to trade oil futures by putting ’em in a Skinner box.
http://www.artmarcovici.com/rat-traders
Turns out the rats wound up doing better cumulatively than most hedge fund managers.
bago
@Bnut Ah. Thought you might have known my brother. He had the pleasure of recieving GAU-8 friendly fire. Small world.
Comrade Kevin
@mclaren:
Go watch the Teabaggers, and you might understand.

My plans are to keep reading on my Jonathan Haidt book, and to do some light Warcraft playing. Trying to figure out a cute name for the Worgen hunter I’ll be rolling in the expansion. Unfortunately, “WorgenLeFay” was already taken. I do have “Lunachick” reserved, but I’m not thrilled with it. Any suggestions would be welcome :)

Abby the pup and I have our second puppy school class today. Then it’s yard work and time to dust off the grill and cook something yummy.
Tommorrow we’re loading up the kid,the dog and the car and spending the day at one of the parks so the doggie can go for a long walk and we can put in some hiking time.
Also too,The Husband got word from a company in Milwaukee that they want to fly him up there for an interview at the end of this month. If that goes well,we might be moving from ATL to Wisconsin this summer. Pending sale of our house at a decent price. I have mixed feelings about this,there’s ALOT of logistical stuff involved(like me driving 800 miles with a cat,a dog and a teenager stuffed into a Honda Fit,lol),but I’d love to get out of the South. Anyone here ever lived in the Land of Cheeses? What’s it like?
Libby
Good choice. I love Nanci Griffith.

I’m off to the nursery to buy herbs, maybe a pepper plant, and plan my garden–almost all tomatoes this year, and most of them already purchased via the local co-op. Yay!
Was going to plant, but it looks like it will be dropping into the upper-40s again this week, and I doubt the soil is warm enough. At least the herbs can go in this afternoon.

@A Mom Anon: Well, I live in Minnesota, so I am acquainted with the Land of Cheese Heads. However, I am familiar with the more urban side of Wisconsin; ex in-laws had a cabin on the north western side for years so we spent a lot of time in Wisconsin. Nice people, good cheese, fantastic fishing, liquor stores open on Sundays. And Russ Feingold would be your senator; who wouldn’t be happy with that? (Naturally, MY senator, Al Franken is even more awesome, but Feingold runs a close second.)

Some great pictures of the volcano in Iceland, including several of lightning in the ash cloud.
Erik at Eruptions has a bunch of good links.
Anyone here stuck in an airport?
matoko_chan
Anne Laurie I have an entry for the Lexicon.
The common denominator of teaparty attendees is christian.
But if the American electorate realizes this it will be a PR disaster for the teabaggers and their pathetic quest to prove they are bipartisan, multi-racial and multi-ethnic.
debit
@debit: I said urban but I meant rural. DOH! I need more coffee. (Have I mentioned that the Caribou’s new Lacuna blend is the best coffee ever? Because it is.)
Allan
Excellent choice. Nanci is a treasure.
Tickets to the Sunday matinee of “Little House on the Prairie” a new potentially Broadway-bound musical currently touring, with Melissa Gilbert all grown up playing Ma. It will be here in Sacramento for two weeks.
Props to them for a partnership they made with Habitat for Humanity. A portion of the proceeds from the show benefit the organization, and in each city the tour visits, members of the cast join the local Habitat on building a home.
