Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Found liable for massive fraud, is required to post a massive bond, gets a break, then files a *fraudulent* bond!

There is no compromise when it comes to body autonomy. You either have it or you don’t.

Glad to see john eastman going through some things.

Russia bombs Ukraine’s maternity hospitals; Republicans in the House can’t sort out supporting Ukraine.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

In my day, never was longer.

Even though I know this is a bad idea, I’m off to do it anyway!

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

This really is a full service blog.

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

Let there be snark.

The choice is between normal and crazy.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

Beyond bondage

This post is in: General Stupidity, Good News For Conservatives

I don’t think BondageGate or any of this is a scandal, but it is incompetent:

At the Republican National Committee, the term “office supplies” seems to have taken on a whole new meaning. If you take its recent filings with the Federal Election Commission at face value, the RNC, it seems, requires thousands of dollars worth of pricey clothing and more than a splash of booze to run its office.

Listed on the report in the category of “office supplies” are purchases from a New England winery and a Capitol Hill liquor store, as well as more than $3,800 from a Florida clothing store. The category of “meals” also seems to extend to the sartorial, with a $450 purchase from a high-end Manhattan boutique — one that has no restaurant or take-out shop on the premises — falling into that category, as listed on the RNC’s reports to the FEC. That purchase, as well as one for more than $500 from the Florida clothing store, are attributed to RNC Deputy Finance Director Debbie LeHardy, who, according to the report, was reimbursed for them.

The Anchoress and the child molester

by DougJ|  April 2, 20109:43 pm| 75 Comments

This post is in: Good News For Conservatives, Green Balloons

I found this genuinely interesting:

The child molester was also a brilliant, generous, talented man — the only person who ever read me a bedtime story. I will love him forever, for that, even when I wake up gasping and afraid.

[….]

Having survived sexual abuse in the family and the public schools, I identify deeply with the pain, the sense of powerlessness and abandonment that the victims of some of our priests and administers have endured. I grieve for them — and for my church, and for my pope, and for all of the countless good priests and religious who are tarnished by the actions of a depraved minority.

I am saddened beyond words to know that these very real sins of commission and omission will repel people, who will miss the consolations of the church in light, out of concern for its shadows.

I think the Anchoress is nuts in general, but I much prefer this to the “we’re the real victims” bullshit the Church hierarchy is spewing. This is honest, even if I don’t think it will convince many people.

All In The Game

A lot of chatter about this latest outburst from CNN’s newest hire:

ERICKSON: This is crazy. What gives the Commerce Department the right to ask me how often I flush my toilet? Or about going to work? I’m not filling out this form. I dare them to try and come throw me in jail. I dare them to. Pull out my wife’s shotgun and see how that little ACS twerp likes being scared at the door. They’re not going on my property. They can’t do that. They don’t have the legal right, and yet they’re trying.

Anyone who is surprised by this needs their head examined. Seriously. I know Erick, chatted with him for years while I wrote at Red State, and he knows that 90% of what he spews is utter nonsense. James Joyner got at his (kind of) the other day. You can say a lot of things about Erick, but he isn’t this stupid, he knows what he is doing. You at home can do your own math on the stupid to evil ratio.

Regardless, I’m sure there are people who are surprised that Erick would continue to say explosive things after his hire, including probably some of the clowns at CNN, but they shouldn’t. At this point, he has every single incentive to keep saying explosive and incendiary things. CNN hired him in spite of everything he had already said, so that was a de facto green light to continue in that vein. It will drive the ratings, and is clearly what he wants.

And should he accidentally go too far (and God knows what would actually be too far for CNN at this point) and get canned by CNN, then this is an even bigger win for Erick. Now he gets to be the victim who was silenced by the evil liberal media, and anyone who has been paying attention knows that this is the route to real riches- playing the martyr for the wingnut welfare gravy train.

In fact, as the current incentives are set up, not getting fired by CNN just gives him a steady job and the opportunity to mainstream right-wing bullshit. Getting fired is a path to riches, whether it be in the form of a book or a syndicated radio show or maybe just sympathy checks from the teabagging public. It really is a win-win for Erick, no matter what happens.

Thanks, liberal media!

From the front page of the online NY Times:

It is official: Barack Obama is the nation’s first black president.

A White House spokesman confirmed that Mr. Obama, the son of a black father from Kenya and a white mother from Kansas, checked African-American on the 2010 census questionnaire.

I’m going to start drinking now.

We’re All the Politico Now

This post is in: Clown Shoes, I Smell a Pulitzer!, Manic Progressive, OBAMA IS WORSE THAN BUSH HE SOLD US OUT!!

Steve Clemons has a piece that will generate lots of links because of the title: “Communications Corruption at the White House.” Sounds exciting, until you read it:

What I have learned after discussions over the last several days with several journalists who either have regular access to the White House or are part of the White House press corps is that there is a growing sense that access is traded for positive stories — or perhaps worse, an agreement that things learned will not be reported in the near term.

The White House is working hard to secure deals that yield fluffy, feel good commentary about the Obama White House. One American White House reporter used colorful terms to describe the arrangement. The reporter said, “They want ‘blow jobs’ first [in the press sense]. Then you have to be on good behavior for a bit or be willing to deal, and then you get access.”

That’s quite a catch there, Steve! Hoocoodanode that a WH communication operation might offer more access to people who will write positive stories? SHOCKING! I wonder if Bob Woodward knows this!

Meanwhile, the entire piece is based on “unnamed sources” who have lots to say, none of it on the record so we can verify. This is inside baseball at its absolute worst. A sensational headline with a charge of corruption, a nothingburger of a report with not one piece of original information or a shred of verifiable evidence, all allegedly supplied by anonymous insiders.

Pathetic. I wonder if Robert Gibbs is the new Rahm for the manic progressive set.

*** UPDATE ***

I’VE JUST LEARNED THAT THERE IS AN ENTIRE BUSINESS OPERATION IN THIS COUNTRY DEDICATED TO MAKING PEOPLE LOOK GOOD. THEY CALL THIS CRIMINAL ENTERPRISE PUBLIC RELATIONS, OR PR FOR SHORT. WHERE’S MY PULITZER!
