Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

An unpunished coup is a training exercise.

We are builders in a constant struggle with destroyers. let’s win this.

Maybe you would prefer that we take Joelle’s side in ALL CAPS?

Bark louder, little dog.

“Why isn’t this Snickers bar only a nickel?”

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

Narcissists are always shocked to discover other people have agency.

There’s always a light at the end of the frog.

Let’s show the world that autocracy can be defeated.

We’re not going back!

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

Republicans don’t trust women.

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

Republican obstruction dressed up as bipartisanship. Again.

Donald Jessica Trump found guilty as fuck – May 30, 2024!

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

The gop couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

Paula Deen Makes KFC Look Like Slackers

by $8 blue check mistermix|  April 28, 20108:24 am| 193 Comments

This post is in: Food

Look at this, KFC Double Down, and despair. Paula Deen’s Lady’s Brunch Burger is 1/2 pound of ground beef, topped by a fried egg and two slices of bacon, on a Krispy Kreme donut. It’s a myocardial infarct and type 2 diabetes on a single plate!

Paula’s Food Network show is “Paula’s Home Cooking”, which makes the point that the shit people slap together at home can often be far worse than anything KFC, Burger King or McDonald’s sells.

(via The Bygone Bureau, which has a whole Paula Deen dinner party.)

A Cheerful Quote to Start Your Day

I’m wondering how Obama will be blamed for this:

Ángel Gurría, head of the O.E.C.D., said ahead of the meeting that the euro-zone countries had to act “very fast.”

“It’s not a question of the danger of contagion. Contagion has already happened,” he told Bloomberg television. “This is like Ebola. When you realize you have it you have to cut your leg off in order to survive.”

The problem is that it is not just Greece, which expects to receive international aid, but Portugal, Spain and other countries that must issue more debt soon.

Christ.

Dead To Her

This post is in: Open Threads, Blogospheric Navel-Gazing

I’ve got nothing, and it’s open thread time, so let’s talk about my Mother. She’s 74 years old, brown (US citizen from Mexican parents), and tough as nails. She spends her winters in a small town near Tucson, a few miles from where she grew up.

Since the Arizona immigration law passed, I’ve been thinking about what’s going to happen the first time she’s pulled over and asked for her papers. The results of my thought experiment aren’t pretty. To say that she’ll be unintimidated by the local cops is a gross understatement. My concern is for the officer who pulls her over, as well as the police department and town that she’ll sue. Life gets a little dull for the retired, and the family joke is that Mom has a titanium grudge carrier, so I expect she’ll do her part to bankrupt her local municipality, and enjoy doing it.

Mom’s a proud Goldwater Republican. She was happy with Reagan, voted for Bush II in 2000 (but not in ’04), and has long been active in the local Republican party. But I can say with absolute certainty that she will not vote for a Republican, for any office, ever again. She’s the proudest person I know–proud of her family, her achievements in life, and her Mexican heritage. And, whatever else this new law is, it is profoundly disrespectful. I don’t know if this law will kill the Republican party in Arizona, but I can assure you that they’re already dead to her.

This picture was taken in Portland, Maine.

I like the conclusion to the article accompanying the picture:

Jeremy Haskell was out walking his black Labrador retriever, Jeter, when he encountered the rally.

He said he is a lifelong Mainer and hunter but doesn’t have a need to flaunt a gun in public.

“I just don’t get it,” said Haskell.

It’s not about the right to bear arms, is it?

Update. Another article about this:

The flying of a large Confederate flag at a gun rights rally at Back Cove startled onlookers Sunday, even causing an African-American teenager to refuse to leave his vehicle out of fear, witnesses said.

Thank God we now live in a post-racial world.

This post is in: Dog Blogging, Open Threads

For those of you in my neck of the woods (WV), it is going to frost tonight so make sure you cover your plants and/or bring them in.

That is all. I’m tuckered out.

Also, one of the dogs from on of my favorite reader pics has passed away:

I’ve had hundreds of reader pics sent in, and posted a lot of them, but hands down, besides the dog in a bucket, this is my favorite. I think before I said they reminded me of Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon. At any rate, RIP, Onion. Although I have been informed that Tater has a new friend to pal around with:

I’m off to fold clothes and relax in front of the boob tube.

*** Update ***

I’ve also added “A dilettante blog from the great progressive state of West Virginia” to the rotating tagline because it is so full of win.

This post is in: Democratic Stupidity, Manic Progressive, Show Me On the Doll Where Rahm Touched You

Read this:

Although U.S. registered voters are closely divided in their 2010 congressional election preferences, those who say they are “very enthusiastic about voting” this year show a strong preference for the Republican Party.

Gallup has consistently found Republicans expressing a higher level of enthusiasm than Democrats about voting in this year’s election campaign. Theoretically, those who are enthusiastic about voting would be more likely to turn out to vote than those who are not enthusiastic. This fall, Gallup will be better able to measure the potential impact of turnout on the vote by applying its “likely voter” model to the generic ballot results. That model takes into account a more complete set of factors related to voting, including interest in the election, intention to vote, and past voting behavior.

The read the three blogposts below this. Then factor in everything the Republicans have done the past two years. Then think about the fact that today, they voted against, for the second time, even debating financial reform.

If you idiots are not enthusiastic about going to the polls to vote for the Democrats and against the Republicans, you deserve what you get. And so help me, if one of you says you just haven’t gotten enough change from Obama, I’ll come to your house and punch you in the neck and kick you in the junk. And if I so much as hear one of you whine about the public option, I’ll go all Marsellus Wallace on you.

There’s a war on, and you don’t get to be Switzerland, sitting on the sidelines nursing your butthurt.

They Open Their Mouths and the Lies Fall Out

This post is in: Assholes, Blatant Liars and the Lies They Tell

It just never stops:

I just love me some “self-correcting blogosphere”:

Did HHS sweep score under the rug? No

And Ben Smith finishes the nonsense off for good:

The Chief Medicare Actuary, Richard Foster, called “completely inaccurate” a report that the Department of Health and Human Services buried a report on health care in the days before a crucial vote.

I’m sure the wingnuts will all have corrections on their blogs in no time.
