Pens v. Habs, Game 4. Also, a picture:
I’m also proud to announce that the bird feeders are such a smash hit that I can actually watch the level of seed drop in real time. I had coffee this morning, filled the feeders, went in for another cup an hour later, and one of the feeders had already dropped an inch or more.
Carrie
Aww, that’s just lovely.

Hockey? What’s that? VIVA LOS SUNS!
Warren Terra
Funny-looking birds in that picture, I’d say. And big: no wonder the birdseed level drops in real time.

The dogs look so happy.
Bird feeding and watching us one of the great pleasures of my life.
Thanks for a post that doesn’t make me want to sit on the floor and sob!
Comrade Luke
I put up a feeder after reading about your experience and I’m getting NOTHING. NO. THING. Any suggestions?
LuciaMia
That is such a great pic. When you think of how Lily was when she first came to you. Now, that is one happy relaxed dog.
Comrade Kevin
Sharks, going for the sweep tonight!

Listen, once those birds get used to the feeders, they can be real hogs. What’s more, the little stinkers will sit on the feeder and plow through the pile of seeds to find their favorite ones, shoveling seeds onto the ground by the bucketful for other birds — not to mention lard-butt squirrels — to vacuum up. But it’s a hoot, and the cost of the birdseed is worth it.

You haven’t lived until you’ve been strafed by Baltimore Orioles (birds not the team). It’s one of the advantages of where we are in East Bumblefuck.
Go Habs! Crosby Sucks!

That’s the thing with bird feeders, John; build them and they will come. We are in 3rd season with ours (“cage” with suet blocks) and some days the birds are queing up on the shephard’s crook, trees and phone line to get their chance. We put up a hummingbird feeder in mid-season last year, and will patiently wait for the little rascals to “discover it’s there.
Yes, SIA, it is one of life’s pleasures.
Comrade Luke, the only thing I can say is ‘patience’. Not much help, but I guess that’s the way it is with some things.

I should add that that is a cute photo. I’ll see ya that one and raise you one of our four-week-old foster kittens:

What a wonderful picture. Thank you.

Dude, you’ll be bird seed poor soon enough. Once birds zero in on a feeding place they’ll be gobbeling up that stuff 24/7. You back yard will resemble St. Marks Square. Especially when the big birds decide to take over.

John,
Have you considered getting one of those little feeders that sticks to your window with suction cups?
Tunch would go mad.
Skepticat
Are you really not overrun with squirrels? Although my feeders are mobbed with birds, it’s only when the rodents get at it that the level drops so fast. Well, that and when the crazy nuthatch sits there and flings seeds all other the place.

@Warren Terra: Those are “bird” dogs. Get it. But seriously, bird Pr0n. John, good work on the feeders. Who is the popular/prolific visitor?

Bleg: Teh other day, Anne Laurie (I think it was) posted the name of a wildlife group that is starting up clean up operations on the Gulf Coast. The donations page was all hinky. Any one got that name?

That’s about as early as I have ever turned off a Sharks game. Bah.

If you haven’t already someone is bound to give you shit for fucking with the natural feeding habits of wild birds. Fuck em. We’ve already fucked with the feeding, sleeping, migrating, fucking, living in general habits of EVERYTHING on this planet. Bird feeders are probably net positives at this point.
Go Habs! Crosby is mindblowingly good. Go Habs!

@Comrade Kevin:
I was going to leave work early (west coast) to catch most of the game, but I checked the score before heading out.
Now I think I might as well stay and get some work done.

audio gift card ads? anyone else getting them??
Been happening for a few days to me on various home and work PCs, so I don’t think it’s related to spam/adware on one unit.
“CONGRATULATIONS!” ripping out of my speakers at random reloads is rather unpleasant.
LT
It’s fun to watch which birds don’t come to the feeder. Sparrows of every kind, blue jays (of course), but the rufus sided towhees only feed from the ground below. And the tiny finches never come, but live out in the blackberries.
Annie
@Warren Terra:
LOL…The pups are just waiting for the birds to get good and fat…And, then BBQ — yipeee…

I have this wide clay cistern on a pedestal that holds two gallons of water near the bird seed, and I’m surprised how much I like it.
Birds love the water, they drink and splash all day long. When they don’t happen to be around the aesthetic of still water and reflection is remarkable for such a small surface area.
I have to replace the water every other day, no big. Nice.

@RSR:
Just hoping John makes a bundle on the walcrap ad as it is one of the more annoying. Almost as annoying as the stores.
Of course it can be good for some laughs.

JC: The squirrels could be an issue down the line. I eagerly await your missives on how you deal with them since I found your dandelion jihad very entertaining. If you think the dandelions were stubborn, squirrels are major leaguers and they are AA…or the Pirates. :)
In the meantime, glad you’re enjoying the joys of bird watching at home. It’s one of the unforseen bonuses we discovered when we moved here.
Oh, and Crosby still sucks and Go Habs! And the Caps are still Choking Dogs. Sigh.

Wait until the starlings discover your feeder(s); you too will be able to watch the seed supply vanish in a day. And that’s not counting the raccoons…
