Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

A last alliance of elves and men. also pet photos.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

How can republicans represent us when they don’t trust women?

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

I really should read my own blog.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

The GOP is a fucking disgrace.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

… pundit janitors mopping up after the GOP

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Not all heroes wear capes.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

Jesus, Mary, & Joseph how is that election even close?

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

“And when the Committee says to “report your income,” that could mean anything!

Hell, it’s already broken. Your wide-ass YouTube video is overlapping the Balloon Juice Lexicon links.

Hmm, now where did I put my hyphen bombs . . . Or maybe I should just call in an asterisk strike by the Master of Accountancy.

For those who want to keep an eye on the ongoings of the Rachel Corrie from a different view, here is a Malaysian news site (in English). There are 6 Malaysians on board the ship, including an MP and a TV crew of 2, besides 5 Irish passengers and 8 crew.

At the moment apparently the ship has been intercepted by Israel but hasn’t been boarded.

I am trying to control my inner band geek here, but I had no idea drumline was an international phenomenon. Concussionists Percussionists can be hella fun to watch, but it’s even more fun when ordinary folks think all that shit is easy. It’s not. They may look relaxed, but they’re picking up on hundreds of cues from each other and adjusting their individual movements accordingly all while keeping within the unified whole. I did notice two big omissions there: no tuned drums (quads/quints) and cymbals. Amazingly enough I didn’t find myself missing it all that much. However I wonder if those additions would make a difference in their routines. Good stuff overall.

I saw these guys at the 2003 Edinburgh Tattoo. They just keep getting more amazing.

Fair and balanced reporting has now extended to the BBC

Hamas, which seized power in Gaza in 2007, is designated a terrorist organisation by Israel, the US and the EU.

In 2007, Hamas won the Palestinian elections which were in general considered by international observers to be fair and open. They didn’t seize power, they were duly elected.

@Steeplejack: Yeah, it sounded much like a dare to me, too. The vid looks fine, though, on Google Chrome.

@Yutsano: You win! I had an ex who was in drumline, and I KNOW that shit ain’t easy. How you be?

@asiangrrlMN: Vid looks fine in FF too. Latest iteration, forget the exact numeration.

Dinner turned out fantastic, although no good pics of it unfortunately. I’m getting a lot of pressure to do some baking, so that may or may not happen tomorrow depending upon my mood. I’ll get some brownie mix at the store and work my magic on it. Trust me I’m good at this.

Well, I saw the Black Watch on a regular basis in Buffalo, N.Y. in the ’50’s. My people were famine Irish and any chance or echo of the old country was water in the desert.

They were thinking bagpipes, music…no Irishman need apply.

Thank God the the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem liberated us, and after that a flood of Irish music.

Real Irish music. The elbow pipe and the sean nos.

    Una Bhan and Donal Og.

Who the hell are these bagpipers? A real regiment or just a bunch of players?

    @asiangrrlMN, @Yutsano:

Just got back from reading all the other threads I missed today. Should have known my fellow night owls would be up and about.

Vid looks fine–sh-yeah! I was talking about how the implant in this post spreads too wide, not what happens after you click linky. Try to keep up.

Having said that, I am mucho tired after a late shift and + many. May hang around for a bit, may pitch face forward onto the bed.

Allman Brothers Band, “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.” Maybe a little too old-school, but what the hell. It’s how I’m feelin’ tonight.

@Steeplejack: You were bouncing like a Mexican jumping bean. I figured at some point you’d settle down rather than try keeping up with you. If you pitch forward onto the bed, please make sure your hands are empty, that’s all I ask.

I’m kinda liking this not having a shit ton of stuff to do on my days off thing. I need to do this more often.

BTW the announcer in the video needs to DIAF. He’s interjecting superfluous anecdotes right during some of the coolest parts of the routine. Just let the guys play and STFU plz & TY.

Yeah, let the frackin’ music speak for itself. Top 40 DJ syndrome. Ugh.

Okay, now I’m really gone. Gonna read for a bit and use the book to break my fall into bed. Manaña. (Strip, Thomas Perry. Excellent crime writer. Up there with Elmore Leonard.)

@Steeplejack: I am keeping up! That’s what I meant, too. On MY laptop, it’s not doing a wide stance at all! Sheesh. I have seen ya all over the place. I just woke up from a nap. I’m groggy.

@Yutsano: That’s standard sports announcing shtick these days–and guaranteed to make me want to poke my eyes out with a stick. I really wish there was a way to mute announcers and just listen to the game–er, drumline. Oh, and my ex was in marching band, and he played the drums.

@Cookie Monster: Oh yeah! Happy Gotcha Day, Lily. Hope you get all the treats you can possibly eat.

@Steeplejack: I’m re-reading Lies My Teacher Told Me. Legacy book from my late uncle, who I realized I hardly knew who he was until after he died. I knew he had a longtime girlfriend (he and my aunt never divorced but they had separate bedrooms for decades) so that wasn’t shocking, but going to his funeral and hearing all the amazing things said about him shocked me to my core. It saddens me that my mom’s really cool brother is gone, but my aunt is cool and his daughter is growing into a wonderful woman.

@asiangrrlMN: I marched in high school and college, went all over the country (mostly) for free because of it, gained some very good life-long friends who have all gotten married around me, and enjoyed every single minute of that experience. It really is one of those things where you either know what it’s like or you don’t. Oh and we had no sexual pressure. The jocks and cheerleaders had to try to get laid, EVERYONE in band was doing it already.

@Yutsano: Yeah, I’ve heard the sex was off da hook. What happened on the marching band bus STAYED on the bus. I saw him march, and he taught the drumline at his uni, so I watched them march, too. Oregon. They weren’t very good, but it was still fun to watch.

@Steeplejack: Night, Steepman. See ya on the flip side.

@Yutsano: FYWP. I just wanted to add:

Oh, and there were plenty of opportunities to get laid in the theatre scene, too. I was a good girl back then, so I didn’t jump on the opportunities, unfortunately.

@asiangrrlMN: I know the current director of the Oregon band now, he was the TA of my band when I was in college. Interesting guy, he’s done some wonders for their program, so I’d call it a safe bet they’ve improved some.

Oh and I hope this isn’t pretentious, but I e-mailed a recipe to BHF. Hopefully she appreciates it!

@asiangrrlMN: In that case, if she asks for more, I’ll give her the stuffed Italian pork chops recipe I did for dinner tonight as well. I was very satisfied with the end result there, so I’d be more than happy to do a whole menu if prompted.

I’m gonna go eat a bowl of Cheerios and crash.

Yeah, the commentary for the Tattoo is pretty annoying. I got the DVDs for a couple years of it and they had an option to play it without the commentary. Much better.

@OriGuy: I would choose that in a heartbeat. One time, the HD audio gave out while I was watching a game, and I could only hear the game noise. At first, it was strange, and then, it was heavenly. And then the audio feed came back, and I engaged in my second favorite button on the remote–the mute button (FF is my fave).
