Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The only way through is to slog through the muck one step at at time.

He really is that stupid.

They don’t have outfits that big. nor codpieces that small.

If you are still in the gop, you are either an extremist yourself, or in bed with those who are.

If you’re gonna whine, it’s time to resign!

Usually wrong but never in doubt

JFC, are there no editors left at that goddamn rag?

I would gladly pay you tuesday for a hamburger today.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

Jack Smith: “Why did you start campaigning in the middle of my investigation?!”

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

Damn right I heard that as a threat.

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

Text STOP to opt out of updates on war plans.

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

A tremendous foreign policy asset… to all of our adversaries.

Find someone who loves you the way trump and maga love traitors.

If you don’t believe freedom is for everybody, then the thing you love isn’t freedom, it is privilege.

Rupert, come get your orange boy, you petrified old dinosaur turd.

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

White supremacy is terrorism.

These days, even the boring Republicans are nuts.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

I’m puzzled. I am a sports maniac and have my favorite teams but, when they are eliminated, I watch because I live the game(s). Hockey is not one of my favorites but damn. . .this is pretty cool.

Wait, is this the sport where a bunch of dudes move around on grass for a long time, never scoring, or the sport where a bunch of dudes move around on ice for a long time, never scoring? I need to measure out how many bullets I am going to pump into my brain.

flyers squeeze-out blue collar goal to tie it up, 1-1, after first period. Flyers talent chasm to hawks def show in rushes up ice and on the PP. If flyers get in Nemo’s crease they’ll win. got to keep him on his back. Bufflin starting to find groove. he scores when prongs off the ice. i’m hoping for a game 7! that’s when hockey players put all other athletes to shame. hockey is too fast for american tv viewers. they want slowness so they can eat and pretend to understand fantasy leagues.

The unis may be ugly, but their effort to get to this point has been beautiful. Lotta heart, these Flyers, but the ‘Hawks are built for the 2010 Cup. Kinda reminds me of when Iverson led the 76ers against the Shaq/Kobe Lakers, they ran out of body parts. @Steeplejack They actually look a lot better than they did in the second. They went back on their heels after the tying goal, but before that it was all Flyers for about 5 minutes.

    @wmsheppa:

I watch Olympic hockey but never pay much attention to the regular season until the playoffs start. To me it seems hard to watch on tv, the action moves fast and the puck is hard to see. Plus I don’t know enough about the subtleties of the game. But I can say that this game is quite action-packed!

So now what? An overtime period, or straight to penalty shots?

  50. 50.

    SixStringSlingr

    June 9, 2010 at 10:57 pm

@madmommy: no penalty shots in the playoffs. 20 minute overtime periods until somebody scores.
ETA: By that I mean, sudden death overtime with a break every 20 minutes of game time.

    SixStringSlingr

    June 9, 2010 at 11:04 pm

@madmommy: The shootout is hated by many long time hockey fans and I can’t honestly see them ever implementing it for the playoffs.

I like the traditions of the Stanley Cup. How the teams let each player take it and do pretty much whatever with it over the summer. Then they take it in and buff out the scratches and dings for the next year. Even in the opposing team’s arena there are a lot of fans still there watching the ceremony.

If every player for the winning team gets their name engraved on the Cup, do they keep adding rings to it over time?

@madmommy: They used to until the Cup got unwieldy. Now they have five big bands at the base of the trophy. When the bottom band fills up, they remove the topmost large band and add a blank one at the bottom. The removed bands go into the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, along with the original Cup.

Anybody else see Jeremy Roenick break down and cry from the NBC broadcasting booth? Couldn’t help but be a bit touched by that. I’m such a sentamental guy.

Yes, well done Hawks. At least you aren’t the Sharks!

Chicago Fans had to put up with Bill Wirtz, too, so I don’t begrudge them some fun. Just this one time!

OK, my girlfriend (whose 40th birthday was yesterday) and I just got back from standing outside of Harry Caray’s restaurant in Rosemont and cheering the Hawks as they got off their bus from the airport. The guys headed into the bar for a private party, and brought the Cup with them. When I saw the boys getting off the bus carrying Lord Stanley’s silverware, I lost it. ::looks skyward:: Maggie, you are avenged!

The Stanley Cup is beautiful. And so are the 2010 Chicago Blackhawks.

::staggers off to bed for two hours before she has to get up and get Bottle Rocket to school::

I must be mellowing with age because I’m just happy the Flyers overachieved and played their hearts out throughout the playoffs. That was some great hockey.

Congrats to the Blackhawks–loved Hossa’s face as Toews handed him the Cup.
