I’m so old that what little I know about soccer I learned from reading Whistle! in translation, but I’m all in favor of anything that makes so many people happy. And by “makes people happy”, I mean “Shakira videos”, of course.

So… anybody got plans for the weekend that don’t involve futbol?

Me no touchie parenting thread. And my dad got one year closer to 60 today. He’s going to have his knee
upgradedreplaced some time this summer, most likely in August.Also, this may or may not mean anything, but I got a phone call today at work wanting to verify an employment. I only bother to mention it because the lady who asked hesitated just slightly when she heard my name. I transferred to HR (standard procedure) and speculated the entire night.

@Yutsano:
That would be safer. Parenting thread bad. Anyway, apparently as childless persons we are not qualified to comment.
CaseyL
Trail walking, and lots of it: Kirkland Refuge Saturday, and Snoqualmie Valley on Sunday.
In between, I’ve got to work on an Access database for an internship project.
Any advice on how to write queries in Access 2007 would be greatly appreciated :)
Yutsano
@Tattoosydney: Hell I don’t even have nieces or nephews, so I guess I’m doubly unqualified. Even though I have changed many a diaper and minded after a child in my day. Oh well, I’d rather just indulge in some good Johannesberg music:

How’s you? So glad to be on my Friday.

All of my plans for this weekend do not involve futbol. In fact I can state with fairly high confidence that is true for every weekend for the rest of my life. And afterwards, for that matter.
jacy
Ah, mowing the lawn, grocery shopping, kids’ baseball games, laundry, more laundry, bathing dogs, more laundry.
On the plus side, child number #3 is home to babysit children #4 and #5, so mom and dad get to go out to the Brazilian steakhouse, or as we fondly call it “All you can eat meat!” Whoo-hoo!
I guess that’s somewhat futbol related, right? Don’t they play it in Brazil? I miss hockey already.

i wonder if the bp destruction of the gulf will add spice to usa england match up, but some how i doubt it…personally i wouldn’t have watched anyway, i would love to win just because its so much more important to them by and large, but i can’t overcome my general indifference….
fucen tarmal
@jacy:
that brazillian steakhouse thing is a fun deal, the servers carrying the steaks and whatever else around on poles….feels very much like the prelude to, or the party after, a huge roman orgy, back when they weren’t considered gauche.

That woman’s hip swivel puts Elvis to shame. I am going to bed now, and maybe, with any luck, will have sweet dreams. Thanks AL.

@Yutsano:
Touch the trolley.

i’m gonna be watching this promo for glenn beck’s new book all weekend:

@General Egali Tarian Stuck: Good to see you back Stuck. I can appreciate a bit better after tonight why you took a breather.

Just went to my music service and downloaded the song. Slammin’.
Thanks.

I’m probably getting a new grill for father’s day. We need some summer BBQ & drink threads to come along. I need recipes.
Yutsano
@Tattoosydney: Touch the galley…
I’m munching on kalamatas and only barely watching TV. I get the bizarre feeling I should be caring about something, but right now whatever that is escapes me.
@Martin: I’m a bit of a grilling idiot I confess. I can do sides like a madman however. I say let the man go out and char the flesh and I’ll take care of the rest.
Also: is BJ screwing up for everyone else?
Viva BrisVegas
What’s the word on the Mexican 14 year old shot in el Paso while running back into Mexico?
Deadly force on children who are running in the right direction seems a bit harsh. After all, this was not Arizona.
Nemo_N
@Viva BrisVegas:
They are still trying to figure out how big were the rocks the 14 year old kid was throwing to the armed officer so they can decide if shooting the kid in the head was excessive.
Martin
@MBSS: I wonder if we could launch a non-profit called the ‘Founders Keepers’ whose mission is to return the US to the godless, socialistic society that the founders originally envisioned, where pot and gay marriage is legal, and television pundits must be identified as such by wearing Hitler mustaches (even the women).
Martin
@Yutsano: No, but I slipped the ‘s’ word and put myself in moderation.
FYWP!
Martin
I can grill okay, but I’ve always had really shitty grills, so I never got too clever. I’ll be getting a nice one, so I want to make the most of it. It’ll have a rotisserie and everything. I want to do new stuff.
Yutsano
@Martin: If you are getting a rotisserie, seriously, check out Alton Brown’s gyro recipe. You can bake it in the oven, but its true splendor comes through with a nice long outdoor grilling. Actually not that long, total cook time is an hour. But I’m a major Greek food nut so that hits a weak spot for me. Plus I make a really mean spanakopita.

@Nemo_N:
Shooting kids in the head is automatically self defense. We know this via Israeli example.
Comrade Kevin
So, what is everyone on Twitter freaking out about that Stephen Colbert said?
jacy
@Martin:
We’ve been grilling fresh pineapple every weekend – wow, I had forgotten how good it was. I’m a pitiful griller, though, pretty much just ribeyes or chicken-on-a-stick. Some fancier recipes would be swell.
Martin
@Yutsano: Oh, yeah, I hadn’t even considered gyros. I cook a lot of Alton’s stuff, and I lived in a Greek neighborhood in NY some decades ago – great food.
[starts a list]
Mart
They must of cut that video with Shakira before Columbia was eliminated. Otherwise no way she could smile and shake like that. She’d be all torn up inside.
Martin
@Comrade Kevin: What did he say? I just saw the show, I didn’t note anything.
Steeplejack
@CaseyL:
I’m your Access/SQL man. Let me know specific questions. Although, er, I am going to bed right now. But I will check back in the morning.
I would say 80 percent of the time you’re going to be querying a database, and your query will take the form:
select [fields you want] from [tables that have the fields] where [some condition holds that gets the data you want, e.g., STATE = CO, or links the tables together, e.g., Invoice.InvoiceNo = InvoiceItem.InvoiceNo]
Comrade Kevin
@Martin: I have no idea, that’s why I was asking.
Tattoosydney
@Yutsano:
Back to the trolley. Touch the trolley. Make hand signals towards the galley.
Martin
@jacy: Ooh, pineapple. [adds to the list]
I can make tacos al pastor for the wife now. And I like making pizza on the grill, which I can attempt again.
R-Jud
Aaaaaaand the young sailor girl has been found alive and well.
I am making about 6 liters of ice cream today for a party tomorrow, at which I will be the sole USA supporter during the England-USA match. That, and 23 miles of running, will be my contribution to human events this weekend.
CaseyL
@Steeplejack:
Hey there hi there, glad to meet ya.
I should be toodling along to bed, too (been caught up in the Abby Sunderland drama – BTW, she’s been found, alive and well). I may pester you Saturday, when I’m actually working on the thing. Thanks in advance!
fucen tarmal
@Martin:
sounds like a plan, but may i add that all people who appear on tv on a recurring basis, must make every 5th appearance naked…helps us overcome our fear of public speakers…
also, movie actors and actresses should all have to apprentice in porn to get a union card. there should be no secrets.
Yutsano
@Tattoosydney: Get the coffee. Get the VERY. HOT. SCALDING. COFFEE.
(You think anyone else is gonna get this?)
@Martin: I’ve never been brave enough to grill a pizza, even though I appreciate the concept and I LOVE crispy thin pizzas. Then again I don’t grill much as it is, so perhaps that’s the FSM giving me a not so subtle hint.
@R-Jud: I just watched Alton make banana ice cream last night. I’m not much of one for making it myself, but it was almost enough to make me buy an ice cream maker from Amazon. Almost.
Tattoosydney
@Yutsano:
So busy!
Yutsano
@Tattoosydney: I’m so bescheftig!
Mark S.
@Yutsano:
Well, I did learn something from that thread. To properly sail around the world, you can’t use any canals and you have to go around five capes. I don’t know why; it seems if you went through Panama and Suez it would be closer to the damn equator and longer. I don’t know why this pisses me off.
And anyone who lets their 16 year old do this should be sterilized.
hamletta
@R-Jud: Thanks be to God!
Yutsano
@Mark S.: And it hit 420 comments, all seems to be ending well, and they STILL feel the need to discuss it. Sigh.
Bill E Pilgrim
@General Egali Tarian Stuck:
I don’t know, Pavarotti, Carreras, and Domingo had some pretty hot moves though.
We’ve come a long way from Nessun Dorma, baby.
By the way I’m experiencing the rare intentional, or at least conscious, Mondegreen with this song. The first time I heard it yesterday, I heard the chorus as “Vodka vodka”, but pronounced the Russian way. Even once I knew what it really was, my brain won’t switch over.
It is now forevermore the “wodka wodka!” song to me, with images of inebriated Slavic futbol fans ordering another round.
Que la fête commence, les camarades!
Bill E Pilgrim
@Yutsano:
You better believe that if I had a blog, I would never permit my regulars to discuss anything that long.
It’s all a question of maturity.
Yutsano
@Bill E Pilgrim: Laissez les bon temps rulez, as the good folks in Nawlins like to say.
Bonne matin mon ami. Comment ca va? I did a French translation call tonight so I’ve had francais on the brain all evening.
Mark S.
@Yutsano:
Silly me. I thought that 350 comment thread about Bill Halter was excessive.
Coincidentally or not, both threads contained about 200 comments from Corner Stone.
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: Without doing a fucking thing! Person going to the loo? Stop trolley, walk away, and do fuck all for two hours! P.S. good luck on the j-o-b. P.P.S. You are gonna get me addicted again to Pam Ann.
I touched the parenting thread, but I washed my hands with disinfectant afterwards and didn’t touch it again. I like the vid you posted. Catchy.
And, is Anne Laurie channeling TBogg now that he’s on vaca?
FH#1 is here, too! Along with my own personal comedian (Bill E).
Bill E Pilgrim
@Yutsano: I had to use the French French because “Laissez les bons temps rouler” would be word salad here.
Do the Cajuns actually write it “rulez”? That’s actually a cross-language pun I had never gotten, if so.
I’m good, thanks. French translation call? Splain pls?
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: I guess someone has to fill in the slack, although this will mean papillion blogging instead of bassets. I think it’s a fair trade-off however. In fact, has Anne Laurie ever shown pics of her extended fuzzy family?
It irritates me that everyone thinks all 16 year olds are the same maturity wise. The fact that she was found and had the skills and tools to be found alive shows as much about her parents as her own maturity level. You would think they stuck her on a raft and pushed her out into the ocean naked with no supplies. And I’m leaving any further commentary right there.
Methinks FH #1 is losing himself in legal briefs. Or Pedro kisses. Only one of these options is acceptable.
R-Jud
@Yutsano: I don’t have an ice cream maker. I just have a home office located next to the freezer.
My only comment about the parenting thread will be to mention Lynne Cox, who twice held the overall record for fastest Channel swim, aged almost 15 and 16, respectively.
Yutsano
@Bill E Pilgrim: Actually the spelling was a typo on my part. Please disregard.
Had a call from a Quebecois client. We have French speakers on staff, but they had all left for the night, so I had to call our translator service. The translator wasn’t all that good, but he got the job done, the really funny part is that if my own French skills were just a bit better I wouldn’t have needed the translator at all. Hell half the time I already knew what she was talking about before the guy translated it. I listened just to be absolutely certain, but I was pretty proud of myself.
@R-Jud: That very similar to the technique for making a granita. Interesting. I wouldn’t think something like that would work.
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: Oh noes! You and I might have to mix it up ourselves because we have a difference of opinion! FH#1 got lost in WHOSE briefs?
And, no, we have not seen Anne Laurie’s fur family. Papillions! Want now!
“Add a little hop in there”
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: “And stare at a passenger…”
Meh, we disagree. Not the first time, most likely won’t be the last, opinion wouldn’t change even if she were lost.
Anne Laurie, the gauntlet has now been laid. The demand for papillion pictures is growing by the minute. I suggest you comply with the wishes of your crowd immediately or face dire consequences.
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: Yup, agreed. And, mine hasn’t changed even though she’s been found! Ah, life. Where would we be without our differences?
“What’s that? Turbulence!” And, for everyone else, this link.
Bill E Pilgrim
@Yutsano: Well done.
Professionals are not all that they’re cracked up to be sometimes.
Quebecois is amazing stuff. I hope the translator was actually Quebecois and not just French, because they can be miles apart. Not so much as written but just in sound.
@asiangrrlMN: Oh, er, good morning, and do try the veal.
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: “Look around, look important.”
I will take the differences and run with them. Anyone who agreed with me exactly I would A) get bored with and B) think they were mental in some capacity. You have a fucking unique DNA structure and life experiences, USE THEM YOU FUCKTWIT!!
(I think I have discovered why Republicans annoy me so much. I shall now bask in the glow of my epiphany.)
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: Agreed. I would be verrrrry suspicious of someone who was just like me because my freakiness, it cannot be exactly duplicated. Therefore, I would think the person was either mocking me, placating me, or blowing smoke up my ass. I do not like any of the above choices. And, nice epiphany. Republicans annoy me because they are amoral, lying, conniving assholes, but each to his/her own.
Yutsano
@Bill E Pilgrim: He wasn’t, even though I had asked for French Canadian specifically. The number of times I heard her say, “Pardon?” was astounding to me. I learned standard French, mais mon pére est Québécois. So I know the differences can be quite stark. And our French speaker is all kinds of awesome, even if she does have a wonderful parisienne accent.
Bill E Pilgrim
@Yutsano: Ah so you have the ear for it, that’s why. That young experience changes everything, especially in terms of sound.
Ah yes those parisienne accents. I have a weakness for those that defies logic.
Cross cultural communication is often tricky, in any case.
asiangrrlMN
@Bill E Pilgrim: Thus, your exile in France?
Yutsano
@Bill E Pilgrim: What is really bizarre is I have an Avignon accent when I speak French, which is altogether another different animal (rougher consonants, vowels a bit more pure like Italian), which is even funnier when you realize I have a slight Carolina accent speaking English. I’m sure there’s a joke in there somewhere, I think I’m just too tired to fish it out right now.
@asiangrrlMN: Has to be because of a woman. At least I’m pretty sure it’s because of a woman. It’s one of the few reasons why I would expatriate myself. Well, wrong gender, but you get what I’m saying. That or a really good job. Even if the country went full-on lunatic I’d still stay, if for no other reason than to be a thorn in the side.
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: I’ve considered expatriating myself, but in the end, I am a creature of habit. However, if I really fell in love with someone from a different country (a sockulist one), who knows?
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: Someplace Scandihoovian perhaps? You’d have love, lust, and all the cold you could handle then.
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: Not my seen. Northern territories of Canada.
Bill E Pilgrim
@asiangrrlMN: Well no actually. That’s my weakness for Paris. The other was an er, acquired taste.
@Yutsano: Nope. I actually moved here with an American, the first time.
I was never one who had a thing about that, as many do I realize. Though it’s funny, once I actually had been with someone from here, I was suddenly remembering a period of adolescence in which my crushes were all French. Or well, Quebecois actually, in the case of the biggest one of all:
http://thebsreport.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/bujoldbday04.jpg
asiangrrlMN
@asiangrrlMN: Gah! Scene! Scene! I can spell. Aaargh!
@Bill E Pilgrim: She’s HOT!
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: Whitehorse. Trust me. It’s the only place you want to even come close to considering. It’s about the only town anywhere in the Northern Territories that has anything resembling civilization. There is almost literally nothing in Nunavut, and Yellowknife freezes solid for about five months of the year, so basically nothing happens. Otherwise Whitehorse is your best bet, even if it is rather close to Alaska.
@Bill E Pilgrim: Hell it never entered my brain that I’d fall for a Canadian, mostly because I didn’t really know any until the wonderful world that is the Internet. Then I met Kurt, and everything changed. Truth be told, if push came to shove, and we could work out some issues in ourselves and between each other, we’d do pretty damn good. But that may be part of another quantum string than the one I’m on.
I’ll poke about for a bit more then head on up the stairs.
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: Who says I want anything to happen? If I have snow and a hot honey, that’s all I need. Aw, I hope you reconnect to Kurt again.
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: Cause I know you and I know that you bore easily and you will want something resembling an arts and theater scene where you can interact with fellow thespians and aspiring writers? I do take these matters into consideration you know.
And with that, I wish you all good night and good luck.
/Edward R. Murrow

asiangrrlMN
@Bill E Pilgrim: Holy crap. She is smoking hot. Not only is she physically gorgeous, she’s luminous as well. Oh my. I think I’m going to retire with her image in my mind.
Bill E Pilgrim
@asiangrrlMN: You’re far too young to retire. But sleep well.

Morning thread indeed!

A barbecue tomorrow followed by supporting the USA against England in the World Cup. As a Scot having to put up with the British media going on about “we” winning the world cup I am following the time honoured tradition of supporting A.B.E…. otherwise known as anyone but England, or whoever is playing England.

Wow, I missed a nutty thread last night. I’m on site with work, the on-site got extended yesterday (no, it’s not a good thing, it means we were behind schedule) and I’m hoping to get home today. Then immediately (literally, like as soon as I drop my suitcase) off to NYC to rendezvous with my wife, then back home tomorrow, then off Sunday on a day trip to Gettysburg with my daughter who’s about to get married. This is like the last 24-hour slot our lives intersect for about the next year.

Shakira’s great. A great performer, a great singing voice, beautiful, a terrific dancer, intelligent, backing good social programs, and not inserting herself without a lot of background knowledge into Colombian politics.

How are you, by the way?

In other news, I am going to see Goldfrapp play live on the 21st. Should be interesting.

I haven’t heard much of this new album.
I also don’t have anything new and exciting to recommend.

Thanks.
I will have a look through my recent purchases and see if anything stands out.
