If Eljero Elia starts for the Dutch today, expect to see a fast game.

he claims that his father named him after Al Jarreau.

    The Dutch didn’t look particularly awesome in the first half. This is my first look at them, and I was hoping for more… I presume they’ll get serious for the second half… but that’s what I thought about England.

    Altogether too lonely in here. Given that I understand exactly 1.78475 atoms more than nothing about the game, they seem evenly matched in at least this game and they can pass and the Dutch apparently ordered Indian takeout or maybe just grabbed a quick satay at the bar instead. Is it fair to say that the Dutch seemingly making sure that their goalie is not lonely? Non-stress situations. They just seem to pass more to him than other teams. Hey, seeing we’re back here, let’s give to ball to the goalie to keep him awake, oh, ok, hi, how you doing? How are the kids? OK, yeah, let’s go the other way, I’ll send your regards to the other goalie.

    It is not a fast game so far. If the Netherlands lose, it will totally ruin father’s day for my husband. They need to step it up.

    I really hope the Dutch win, because I live in Japan and if the Japanese team wins they will go on about it for the next four years. I’d really rather not go through that. I don’t mind when the baseball team does well here, but the soccer team just rubs me the wrong way.

    @J.W. Hamner: England did get serious in the second half: seriously crappy.

    Solid goal for the Dutch.

    It’s interesting how the Japanese are doubling anything on the wings.

    It’s hard to believe the Dutch can’t own the middle.

    Well, the Dutch did get serious at the start of the second half. A fair amount of pressure and number of half chances within a few minutes result in a quick goal. As is often the case in those situation, the pressure is suddenly released.

    I only just woke up, so haven’t had the chance to watch. Looks like the Dutch are finally doing something.

    That was a nice chance… I’ve got a lot more respect for Japan after this,

    Fairly easy win for the Dutch. They didn’t get out of second gear except for the first 10 minutes of the second half that resulted in the goal, but they didn’t really need to either.

    If there is any player in world football with a more indefatigable work rate and greater commitment box-to-box than Holland/Liverpool’s Dirk Kuyt, I have yet to see him. What an inspiring player!!

    So. Korea/ManU’s Park “Three-Lung” Ji-Sun is often (and rightly) credited with these qualities, but I don’t believe he possesses Kuyt’s offensive skills (e.g., did you see that bicycle kick in traffic in the first half?!)

    In an era littered with pouting, flopping, erratic, multi-millionaire footballers, Kuyt is a marvel to behold.

    @handsmile: Agreed.

    @J.W. Hamner: I don’t know why the Dutch coach kept Elia out of the game for so long.
