Happy Father’s Day to all of the Balloon-Juice dad contingent!
SamKitten got his daddy a hammock on a stand for Father’s Day. So yesterday evening (it was so nice out that it would have been a shame to make him wait until today for his gift), Mr. Kitten got to lay out on it, looking at the river, with a glass of bitter in one hand and a Cuban cigar in the other. I think he enjoyed it.

As a current father whose son turned 3 yesterday, and with a daughter due in 3 weeks, I commend all the fathers who are stepping up and doing their jobs.
I gripe about people in my generation (X) and the millennials a lot for various reasons, but I have to say that when in comes to fatherhood, I am impressed. So many young dads in their 20s and 30s are really rolling up their sleeves and embracing fatherhood. It’s really nice to see.

My dad taught me how to read when I was four, never stopped me from reading anything I wanted to (including The Exorcist at age 12) and spent a small fortune trying to satisfy the hunger of my insatiable inner bookworm. He screwed up other aspects of fatherhood in myriad of ways, but he gets a pass on all of that because he taught me how to read.
John, on behalf of Dads everywhere….You kids knock off that racket!

Honors to all the Dads out there. Today my husband and two of my sons will go to my parent’s house for a cookout. My dad is in his late seventies, my husband’s stepdad is about the same age. The weather is hot but sunny and I expect we’ll have some games going outside.
My dad worked in a printing company, running a press that was as big as our house. He went partially deaf in the process, but he stayed there for 35 years. We kids only saw him after 6 during the week and then on the weekends and sometimes we didn’t know what to do with his sarcasm (Is he kidding? Is he serious?) but he’s been a great dad with a great sense of humor.
My husband is also a great dad. My three sons have always gotten his full attention and care, from poopy diaper days through thousands of hours of pee wee soccer to all the trials of high school and college. He’s a hugger and he’s never been afraid to tell them right to their faces, “I love you”, something my dad has never done.
I want my sons to be like their dad. I think that’s the best compliment I can give him.
A sad Father’s Day for me: my brother and I took a trip to Gettysburg because he’s doing so badly. (Personally, I blame his mental difficulties on overmedication with statins, but interested parties can google their own conclusions– “space doc” “lipitor, thief of memory” and “dr mary newport”.)
But he was a great dad in his day, and that’s the important thing.

Happy Fathers Day to all you Dads. I am going to take a roadtrip in a few minutes and go get my Dad his favorite brownies.
Happy Father’s Day all you dads! Make sure you give yours a call and/or a kiss. You sure do miss them when they’re gone.

Happy Father’s Day to all critter dads, too. We well know what they are willing to take on for the good of the creatures in their care.

I got the morning off from taking care of my 4 month old son to go mountain biking. Hoorah! Coffee at end to keep me going after the workout and am enjoying my first Father’s day!

My daughter is 16, cute, and has just started dating. Yeah, Happy Father’s Day.
Thanks, and happy father’s day to all the other dads here!
My son is turning 21 next week–it’s been a long tough slog with a lot of painful issues, but he’s getting himself together and moving forward now, and he’s happier than he’s been in a very long time. And we love his girlfriend.

Happy Father’s Day to all BJ’ers.
And a special happy day to my dad, who introduced me to P.G. Wodehouse when I was 12, so we could spend summer evenings together outside laughing our asses off.

@AkaDad: Mine is 9, cute, and gives me nightmares about her starting dating. My sympathies.

My fil is 90 & a gem. He still drives, very active, cuts firewood, does wood carving & never stops talking. He is a lifelong democrat, keeps up with current events and loves to talk about politics at a drop of a hat. He is constantly annoyed with the tv news pundits but he is an ardent fan of Rachel Maddow. His memory is getting a little less sharp and doesn’t have as many filters on what he says so it can get amusing when he pops off with whatever is on his mind politically when his one republican son is around. Republican son doesn’t seem to enjoy it so much though. You can see him gritting his teeth.
It’s an odd thing for me, celebrating Father’s Day with my immigrant husband-and-father-of-my-kids — he doesn’t much care about the day because he comes from distant shores, but they do, and I don’t know what to do really, because I grew up with a mom. Today the day revolves around soccer!
I love watching him with our kids. It’s a marvelous thing to see the love he gives, and watch them thrive under his care. He’s a good one.

Thanks John! My daughter turns two in September, but gets her feeding tube taken out this month. Been a long road, but we’re getting there.
@Redkitten: Hmm, I don’t foresee a hammock or a Cuban. I’ll keep up hope for the big piece of chicken though!

Father of two brilliant, beautiful talented daughters in their 20s, one of them getting married nanoseconds (well, a week) from now.
Had steak and eggs for breakfast at my favorite breakfast joint. Later might have that Hefeweisse Dunkel that’s been cooling in the fridge all week.
But mostly it’s wedding preparation chaos around here. So I have to enjoy those moments when they occur.

To all who have lost their dads – my condolences, as I get a bit weepy with you.
Nick Kristof lost his 91 year old immigrant father the other day and ran what amounts to a lovely memorial to him in today’s paper.
And to all the dads – Happy Father’s Day!
