I learn something new every day. Turns out the actual title of this John Singer Sargent painting is “Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose”. I nevertheless dedicate it to our bloghost’s best dogfriends.

I’m still here. Don’t be bitter.

When will the angry show up? When will they?
replicnt6
Wow. That Sheltie can go around the coffee table in both directions! Ours only goes in one direction, clockwise.
Little Boots
Can I just say, first, I do not hate John, or even dislike him. Can I just say that now, before the acolytes get here, and start getting angry?

You see something like this and wish you could bookmark to check on where that kid is 30 years from now — the level of engagement with watching the dog, and the sheer joy and fearlessness in crawling after the dog (and the parents’ trusting their dog and baby to interact and not be telling either to “be careful” or interfering with their play) makes me wonder if this kid will be grow up loving animals and wondering about the natural world and become a biologist or scientist traipsing around in the woods or jungle somewhere.
auntieeminaz
I missed the drama. Do I dare ask what happened?
General Egali Tarian Stuck
Great video, thanks CM. You don’t have to be a toddler to do this at home. I do the same thing with Charlie. I get down on all fours, and he flies around the apartment just like the pooch in the video.
And here is a photo I took this afternoon of one of our local wingnuts abode.
Little Boots
I was much abused. Okay, that’s prolly not the whole story, auntie, but it’s a start.

I absolutely love how the doggie is clearly cutting up for the baby, clearly working to get the laughs!
I love this doggy, and I love this baby, and now I must love Comrade Mary (and Anne Laurie for posting).

@General Egali Tarian Stuck:
Um, is it really honoring the flag if you hang it upside down? Or is this some new thing Beck’s telling people to do?
Little Boots
People don’t really listen to Beck, ever, do they? General, you’re not that stupid, are you?

He has more than a million viewers for his shite TV show. And I don’t even know the Arbitrons for his radio show. But yes, idiots do listen to him, and Limbaugh.
Little Boots
but actually pay attention? THat’s some sad shit, if anyone actually truly listens to the stupid jackass.
General Egali Tarian Stuck
@Mark S.: An upside down American flag is a recognized symbol of distress for the country, and maybe other situations. I wouldn’t be surprised if Beck is telling his Beckheads to do it. This guy a few months ago, before the flag, had one of those TEA signs in his front yard with Taxed Enough Already stamped on it.
Mark S.
@handy:
Uh-oh, everyone don their togas!
arguingwithsignposts
@Little Boots:
Look at how many GOP pols have had to back off when they said something against Limbaugh. And Beck is making *millions* off his books and assorted assholery. People aren’t buying shit they don’t believe in. Even wingnuts wouldn’t do that.
Little Boots
ya know, if we could have all our expenses paid for, and be taxed at 80%, i suspect most of us would be better off. It’s a stretch to imagine it, but 20% free and clear would probably be a great deal for the vast majority of Americans.
handy
@Mark S.:
Beck wouldn’t know an Overton Window if he jumped through one. The defining achievement of today’s GOP: language as a tool for confusion.

A lot of GOP pols will discover that listening to Glenn Beck was the stupidest thing they could ever have done, come November. Mark my words.

That is one cute and happy baby and puppy.
I was actually suprised to see the sheltie playing with the baby instead of trying to herd him . The only shelties I’ve ever been around seem to try to herd everything…grass, rocks, fences, people.
@General Egali Tarian Stuck:
What an asshat.
My happy event for the day was that I got to see my husband reenlist in the Navy in front of 500 cheering sailors. His oath was administered by a female Navy chaplain who is also a Catholic nun with 2 Ph.Ds. And Obama’s pic up on the wall of the gave me a good chill, last time he reenlisted it was W and Darth Cheney up there. No matter how screwed up things are they are still a damned sight better than they were under those two.

Does this mean Tunch has a new nickname? Or that another addition to the Cole household is upcoming?
Little Boots
Thank you, MarkS, that was very … wait, was there some message in there?
arguingwithsignposts
@Little Boots:
I’m taking you as not a DougJ troll, so I’m just giving out advice here, but as I said earlier, you came on strong as a new nym asking questions and being rather dogged about it. Cole’s transition from red to blue is pretty well-traveled territory, to be frank. As I said, search “Terry Schiavo” and see the archives.
This is a pretty tight-knit community, and we put up with pissing matches between regulars – Corner Stone, JSF, the general, etc. (even me), but when someone who’s an unknown comes in like you did, some of the regulars can get bent. We deal. If you want to hang around, I’d recommend you do so as well.
Little Boots
I did come on strong. I think people overreacted to some pretty mild criticisms. But I did come on strong for a newbie. Yeah, I can see that Arguing, and I will stop that. I know how that goes, and in other places I might react exactly how people reacted here. But I don’t think I’d be quite so defensive. At any rate, you have a point and I will try to stop. I really will.
Little Boots
Can I still laugh at Glenn Beck? Isn’t that in the Constitution somewhere?
arguingwithsignposts
@Little Boots:
I would laugh at Glenn Beck if I didn’t think he was destroying a portion of our population. Art Bell, I can laugh at. Beck, I wish he would go away. Even the strongest Jon Stewart-fu has no effect on him. Ditto Rush Limbaugh.
Mark S.
@Little Boots:
I don’t know, Beck’s kind of a sacred cow around here.
Little Boots
Arguing, you’re okay, you really are. But sometimes you just have to laugh at the clowns, like Glenn Beck. Especially Glenn Beck.
SiubhanDuinne
@MarkS #36: Just don’t let ngusTheGodOfMeat catch you calling anyone a scared cow.
Oh wait. That’s not what you said, is it?

Gina

asiangrrlMN
I’m just gonna say it. The kid got on my nerves. Loved the dog, but couldn’t watch the whole vid. Now I will with the sound off and see if I like it any better.

Ailuridae
@Little Boots:
No. In this thread you are being annoying and passive aggressive. I haven’t even read the other threads.

Fair enough, and sorry about the NBA draft, and especially the lack of beer. I feel no similar lack, but that’s just me. (Or was that passive aggressive?)

My NBA teams are NJ and MIN. Both woeful with no signs of getting better from a management standpoint and NJ’s only help for improvement is FAs conning themselves into playing there. Again, its been a long day.

@Ailuridae: Damn damn damn damn damn! Sigh. Another futile year for the ‘Wolves?
Mark S.
The Hawks drafted somebody named Quincy Pondexter. For some reason I really wish this guy’s name was Poindexter. Anyway, at least he doesn’t have to be a rookie on a team with Charles Barkley, like some guy named Elmer Bennett was:
I love Charles Barkley.
Ailuridae
@Mark S.:
There is a story behind this. I grew up in Upstate NY here and became a fan of the Nets because the Knicks went to pay cable in the early 80s and we couldn’t afford it.
While growing I followed the local CBA team whose coach, Bill Musselman went on to be the first Timberwolves’ coach. I then lived in MN (and my partner still does) and had seasons etc but that was a decade and change ago (when they had some hope)
So yeah I invested about 230 hours just this season in watching otherwise unwatchable basketball to be rewarded by two franchises demonstrating they have no idea how basketball games are won.

@Ailuridae: I hate the ‘Wolves management. And, St. Paul. DUH!
Little Boots
Might wanna rethink New Orleans, at least for awhile.
scav
@Ailuridae: You wrote “NBA drat” which I thought brilliantly summed up what I took to be your feelings on the subject. And that was several infinities ago, so I think I read those aright.

Me too re: Wolves management.
I LOVE St Paul but I already struggle with the lack of sunlight here in Chicago. Losing an extra hour a day, given that I don’t control my work and sleep schedule would be rough. Regardless of what I do this winter I will almost certainly be in Lowertown full time on 5.1.2011.
Are you in the Twin Cities? Where-ish?
asiangrrlMN
@Ailuridae: I can sympathize if you need heat and sun. We get lots of the latter, but not so much of the former. I’m about fifteen minutes north of St. Paul/Minneapolis. You coming here for work (as well as for your partner)?
Ailuridae
@scav:
I thought you were referencing my mimicking Little Boots self-involvement through my own (half-mocking) self-involvement about making you all discuss the NBA draft.
I don’t use drat enough. I recently watched Justice League/JLU with my nephews and was explaining to them what Superfriends and live-action Batman were like. Neither of them (one 9 this fall the other 9 next spring) had ever heard the word “drat”
Now can we please get back to discussing the NBA draft? That’s what this thread is for, after all.
Beer has been put away. Almost moved on to a bottle of wine that would be wasted on my drunkeness but instead made myself a largish vodka soda (with lemon and lime – we call it adult Sprite here) from the Costco purchased bottle of Svedka. No way I finish it before laying my head to the pillow but its excellent.

I just can’t get jazzed up over the NBA. It’s so market-driven and product-driven, it might as well be a bad kid’s cartoon. Now we get the spectacle of the select group of max FA’s crowning the next dynasty in convos with each other about which franchise they’re going to beggar. In the meantime, a solid two thirds of the league hasn’t seen a profit in 10 years. At this rate, they’ll be the fourth league by the time LeBron retires.
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: I shall attempt to make up for his absence. Although I shall miss him terribly as well.
Hi hon. And hi y’all. I see you’ve been quite dramatic while I’ve been putting in the mandatory overtime.
@NobodySpecial: Here’s my big issue with the NBA (and I thought this was true even before the great rip-off of the Supersonics): it’s just not good basketball. When you watch how these grown men play, even in championship series, they act lazy and focus on flash over fundamentals. Of course the coaches can’t exactly order the gigantic egos to focus on what the hell they’re doing, so the end result is, to me, an overpriced inferior product. Professional athletes may all indeed be spoiled assholes the world over, but at least in all the others you can tell they at least TRY. I don’t see that in the NBA at all.
Ailuridae
@asiangrrlMN:
As long as I have a major airport nearby I am completely mobile. CHI is the same as Austin is the same as NO is the same as MSP. I would love to live in Key West for a winter but that, sadly is untenable.
St Paul is going to win for non climate reasons related to another person’s awesomeness. I just like to pretend otherwise and want to grouse about the draft.
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: YAY! FH#2 is in da house! I missed ya last night. Yeah, all the drah-ma! I missed it, too, fortunately.
@NobodySpecial: Yeah, well, most sports are these days, sad to say. Basketball is actually the sport I watch the least (because they don’t show the playoffs on regular TV until the finals and because my team sucks).

Never, ever believe an NBA or other pro sports owner’s claims of poverty unless they are willing to open up their books to forensic accounting. Pro sports teams, in all but the worst economies, basically print money.
I won’t argue for their on court product but we likely disagree why it stinks.
Yutsano
@Ailuridae: I’m biased, I admit it, but I love SEA. Not only is it a wonderful airport, especially after its huge remodel, but I have never had a bad take-off or landing. Plus if you get really lucky you’ll land on a clear day by flying around Mt Rainier while coming in right over the Space Needle and downtown. I always find that view breathtaking.
@asiangrrlMN: I’ve decided I want to be as drama free as possible tonight. I just want peace and a little snuggle in your soft pillows. And for FH #1 to return to consciousness long enough to chastise us for ignoring the election Down Under. Though you think he could have told us it was happening too. Sheesh.
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: Did you see the thread devoted to it? FH#1 said unlike in some countries, their elections actually last a couple of weeks. And, you know my pillows are always fluffed for you.
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: We are actually unusual in that our voting happens all in one day. In fact in India an election can take as long as a month before it’s decided and certified. It makes sense if you think about it, after all you’re talking about getting the opinion of almost a billion people there, and India takes its democracy VERY seriously. No restoration of the old monarchy there any time soon I’m betting.
Ailuridae
@Yutsano:
When I was deciding where to move I made a matrix (sorry, math dork) and SEA was really high up on the list. Walkable, cosmopolitan, etc. As were POR and DEN. But in terms of places I need to go on short notice or regularly there is MSP, Upstate NY and my CoLo on the east coast. So SEA, POR, DEN, SLC, SD, Long Beach and Santa Monica and the Bay Area fell out pretty quickly.
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: His point, though, was that the campaigning doesn’t last eighteen months. Ugh.
@Ailuridae: WTF CoLo? Headquarters? I would like to live in NYC for a year before it totally destroyed me.
Ailuridae
@Yutsano:
If you ever want to mess with a reasonably astute conservative aski him or her:
1) Would they support a shared national holiday for Veteran’s day and election day?
2) Would they support a full week of elections including a weekend in its entirety?
Its a fun game because they know they can’t win without disenfranchising “lesser” voters but they themselves can’t admit that their path to power is essentially that.
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: Eighteen months? Did we shorten the election season while I wasn’t looking? Hell look at the number of people who are accusing Obama of starting to run for 2012 now. It’s just gotten more and more ridiculous, and after Citizens United it’s just going to get worse. Corporations as superpeople. I think I’m choosing the right time to say fuck it to the corporate world and become a mindless government bureaucrat.
@Ailuridae: MSP from what I understand (and wifey can confirm this) is pretty high up on the livability list. I think you’re missing a golden opportunity here though. Upstate New York leads one right to Toronto, which is a fantastic city and very livable and cosmopolitan. Not that I’m necessarily putting thoughts in your head, just making conversation…
Ailuridae
@asiangrrlMN:
CoLocation. If you are an IT dork it is where they keep your servers. Mine are on a racks (basically a closet) in reasonably rural VA in a vast facility unlikely to be robbed or hit by a hurricane or a tornado etc. I guess I go there about once ever 5 months or so. But its always last minute and always urgent – the difference between getting there in 8 hours door to door and 12 is a lot of stress that seems unnecessary to me.
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: That was just FH#1’s estimation. I would say it’s all elections, all the motherfucking time. Motherfucking snakes on the motherfucking plane! Who wouldn’t be upset by that? Sorry. The Daily Show from last night.
And, yes, the cities are a good place to live. We have a good theatre scene and a great music scene. Decent food and funky neighborhoods (if you know where to look).
@Ailuridae: Ah, got it. I was trying to work Corporate and Logo into the abbreviation, which made absolutely no sense.
Ailuridae
@Yutsano:
MSP is highly livable. Not overly walkable in Saint Paul (lack of density almost anywhere) but livable. I loved my two years there and miss it a lot.
As for TOR, its basically every American progressive’s dream, right? And their weather is so much better than the rest of the Midwest.

@Ailuridae: I’m southeast of Seattle right now in the conservative armpit pustule of eastern Washington State. That may be changing very soon however, I have a job interview next week in Seattle proper that I may have very good odds of getting. I think as long as I show them I’m not a total idiot (which is most days) and I didn’t lie on my resume (I didn’t) then I may indeed haz me a new gig. My airport of choice is always SEA, even though PDX is just as convenient for me. It’s not entirely a logical choice either, since I have an aunt who lives in Vancouver, but such is life.
@asiangrrlMN: That’s pretty much my estimation of PDX, SEA, and YVR (Vancouver for those of y’all airport-code challenged), all three are very charming and beautiful and extremely livable. The three jewels of the Northern Pacific.
@Jeroen Janssen: Is that a white GSD? WANT!!
asiangrrlMN
@Jeroen Janssen: OK, that is just way too cute. The video is being finicky right now (stopping and starting), but I certainly can understand your worry about Midas and Soda wanting some alone time.
@Mike Kay: It’s my favorite American city, but all the things I love about it (noise, crazy art scene, tons of people, able to do anything at any time) would eventually drive me to my ruins. But oh, it would be a glorious ride! At least, that’s how I felt when I was there, ten years ago. I hate crowds, noise, and people, but I loved NYC the minute I got off the bus at the Port Authority. It was MY town.

There wasn’t an election in Oz. Well, not a national one, just a leadership election in the majority party, and as the sitting PM (Rudd) couldn’t find many MPs to support him, he decided to not even stand. The whole thing took less than 12 hours, which is probably a record for a leadership change in a democracy and most likely even beats the majority of coups.
National elections apparently will be called soon, possibly to be held as soon as August.
The approach to SeaTac can be good, but it doesn’t beat flying from Amsterdam to Heathrow and flying almost straight East-West over Central London.
