Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

They punch you in the face and then start crying because their fist hurts.

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

Today in our ongoing national embarrassment…

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Quote tweet friends, screenshot enemies.

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

Wake up. Grow up. Get in the fight.

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

This blog will pay for itself.

Washington Post Catch and Kill, not noticeably better than the Enquirer’s.

One lie, alone, tears the fabric of reality.

The “burn-it-down” people are good with that until they become part of the kindling.

Let there be snark.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Oh FFS you might as well trust a 6-year-old with a flamethrower.

If you’re gonna whine, it’s time to resign!

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

That’s excellent. I actually laughed out loud. After watching as many World Cup matches as I have, that sound is going to be the lasting impression, I think. Vuvuzela!

Jeebus, had my speakers turned up on high and got blasted by the sockpuppet vulvuzela.

That’s funny stuff, but the Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theater has nothing on the Welsh Light-Chest Legging Repertory Company.

    Just sayin’.

Funny as hell. Now, can someone tell me what the original tune is? It’s bugging me to death.

@asiangrrlMN: Layla, by Derrick and the Dominoes.

    Layla.

It was bugging me for a bit too. Those sock puppets threw me off.

    @asiangrrlMN:

Eric Clapton, “Layla.” (Originally it was Derek and the Dominoes.) And please do not mention the wretched “unplugged” version. Shudder.

I commented to a friend on saturday that the cheap trumpet-like instruments reminded me of the sound of a mosquito buzzing directly next to my ear drum.

Ta, Polish, Violet, and Steepman. I knew I knew it! And, Steep, of course I’m going to find the unplugged version. Heh.

@Steeplejack: Ah, yes. The POPULAR version of the song. It’s not…very good.

No, no, no! The horror, the horror.

Much better to try the other great song from that album–“Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad.”

    @asiangrrlMN:

Okay, if you must go light(er), try this–the Allman Brothers Band, “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.” Much better than watered-down acoustic “Layla.”

(Duane Allman played on Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, so that’s how I connected to this.)

@Steeplejack: OK. That is a MUCH better song! I really dig it. So upbeat for such a downer message.

@Steeplejack: As Yutsy said, associations are a strange breast, er, beast. But, yeah, that’s much nicer than the acoustic Layla. Then again, I don’t much care for the original Layla, either.

Probably old news by now, but: Hulu announces new service destined to be as successful as the NY Times attempt to charge people for access to the editorial page – tries to compete with free Bittorrent trackers by demanding money for less content.

@JGabriel: Well, if they were more like Netflix instant, I might pay (although they’re a couple of years behind Netflix). Instead, they don’t seem to be offering much more of value.

I am constantly amazed at the myopia of major network execs about the online world.

If there is any video that needs a vuvuzela button, it’s this one. Haven’t figured out why some videos have it and others don’t

@JGabriel: I was trying to figure out WTH they’re thinking is so amazing they should be charging for it. Three stinking networks? Gimme a break.

    Yutsano

    June 30, 2010 at 3:34 am

@Gina: Hmm…three networks? Maybe they’ll sell it as some sort of retro TV watching experience. This of course just means the shareholders are raising an unholy stink about the television money sinkholes. That stuff ain’t cheap to make you know.

Just as an aside; the South Eastern Conference has determined that the vuvuzela is not a traditional artifical noisemaker and they will not be allowed at SEC games. The only noisemaker that is tied traditionally to a SEC school is the cowbell at Mississippi State, and even then it’s only allowed in certain instances (after scores, pregame, between quarters, halftime, etc, etc). Considering the fact that the MSU mascot is the “Bulldog”, I don’t really see the connection with the cowbell (Texas, yes; MSU, not so much), but I guess they must have figured that it was better than a stadium full of folks blowing dog whistles.

Always amazing what you can find on teh Interwebs. The song is kinda meh (a little lyrical expansion would have helped) but you can tell the derivatives of their sound, plus it has Hermione in it and the ending is adorable:

Very much OT but my fat feet I mentioned last week were indicating pre-eclampsia. I’m being induced at the hospital now (it takes a long time and is hella uncomfortable, which is why I’m up). If we decide to have a second kid, we’re totes adopting. This sucks. Wish me luck.

Ki o tsukete kudasai. At least they caught this at an early stage when the treatment options are much better for you and the baby. And kudos to the adoption idea as well, there are so many kids who need good loving homes out there.

PS: It’s an open thread, you are very much on topic. :)

@Yutsano: Yeah, the interwebs are great! Particularly if you happen to be a old goob that doesn’t know what or who a Hermione is! I thought the video was quite cute, the song was so-so, but the band sounded a lot like The Outfield to me. But what do I know?
