It’s not exactly what I’d call a patriotic song, but I think a little Nanci Griffith fits the story of who we are now beautifully.

Other voices, angry voices:
Rage Against The Machine, Wake Up
Rammstein, Amerika (lyrics translated into English)

Simon and Garfunkel, America You are right about “some” of us. The State of Georgia had Friday off and the University System has today off?

I have off today. Which is nice. I could use the rest.

“Croooown thy good” (thumpa-thumpa geetar).

Well, my plans for yesterday went down the drain when my John came down with the horrid intestinal virus I had a couple days ago. Poor man. It is miserable. So no concert and no fireworks by Zambellis (except that I watched their spectacular display from the Point for the Pittsburgh Regatta on tv) for me. Spent the evening with the dogs, sitting on the deck, and trying to get some tea and ginger ale down the poor man. Today is my brother-in-law’s birthday, so the family is heading to his house for a birthday picnic. There will be an excess of delicious food (between us four foodie sisters and our gardens, we can really whip up a fantastic feast if I do say so myself) and much floating around on rafts in the pool. And thank the FSM for the pool, because they are talking about temps over 90 today.

I haven’t been around these parts the last few days because my old 1999 Mercury Sable, the first car I really loved and kept longer than I needed it, finally gave up the ghost with steering system failure at 216,491 miles. She died hard, too, with the repairs estimated to cost more than she was worth.
My new ride is a MUCH more fuel efficient Ford Focus SE with SYNC.
I got a great price and exactly the car I wanted through USAA new car buying service, got 0.0% interest, and 30gb of MP3 music.

@soonergrunt: Very nice. I hope it is a good car for you.
We took the kids last night and sat on a hill and watched the fireworks from Longwood Gardens. It was nice.
But I am off to the dentist now to get my crown adjusted. Fun, huh?

The State of New York and the SUNY system is off, too. They don’t want to pay us for Sunday and make it an extra day of the week being paid. We always get Monday off if a national holiday falls on the weekend.
Its 76 here now and the next 3 days will be in the 90s.
We sat on the deck and watched the fireworks display as far as Buffalo (we are on a hill) and the usual neighbors’ display.

@stuckinred:
That song gives me the same feeling every time I hear it, and I’ve been putting it on every one of my mix tape/CDs since it came out. I can’t describe the feeling though – their harmony kills in one way, and the words kill in another. The effect on me results in tears every. single. time. Even right now.

Fareed Zakaria is shrill.

@stuckinred: really? we’ve got some state employees coming over today to cook out… maybe the state divided them up in a strange way.

@Cat Lady:
Cathy I’m lost
I said, though I knew she was sleeping
I’m empty and aching and I don’t know why
tape mix when it came out? Reel to reel?
stuckinred
@jron: Yea, not sure, my bride is with the health department. Here’s the state schedule
Now I have to unass this blog an move a ton of lumber from one place to another!
mr. whipple
@stuckinred:
Great pic. I think this version is also nice.

In ‘Back to the Future’, Doc sets the clock in the DeLorean to a day 25 years in the future. Today is that day.
New Yorker
Finally watched “The Departed” last night, rather than trek to the west side of Manhattan to watch fireworks. I was struck by how much of the movie was filmed in New York, and not Boston. The “Park Luncheonette” is actually in Brooklyn (corner of Driggs Ave. and Lorimer St. in Greenpoint) about a 10 minute walk from my apartment.

@stuckinred:
for those working in the nexus between the two, its a 4 day weekend, they are the ones you have to watch out for.
Cat Lady
@stuckinred:
Boyfriend (now husband) and his friends were early adopter ’70s audiophiles and musicians. Tape decks were the size of suitcases, but they were tape decks nonetheless.
Punchy
@BDeevDad: How does one remember this stuff?
stuckinred
@Cat Lady: Coolio, I brought back and Akia reel to reel from the east but I can’t remember how we go the vinyl onto the tape!

What were we thinking?
We got an adorable 2-month-old border collie pup right before the 4th of July. I can no longer tell if I’m awake or not. We have clearly lost our minds.
fraught
@New Yorker: It’s about ten minutes from my apartment too. small world.
Svensker
@stuckinred:
One of the best songs, ever. Always brings me to tears, too. That whole album was amazing.
For something a little lighter but VERY HOT, here’s Arrow (the Hot Hot Hot guy) doing some wonderful soca. Almost makes me not care that it’s 90, we have no air conditioner, the car broke, and the groundhog ate all the food.

@eco2geek:
OK, I know I’m too old for Rammstein but I really get a kick out of them. Saw them live & the lead singer came out on stage completely on fire! Very impressive & the sort of human sacrifice Rock and/or Roll seems to require.
eco2geek
@frankdawg: Envy – I’d love to see them in concert – Till Lindemann, the lead singer, reportedly has a pyrotechnics license. They’re completely insane.
