The first episode pulled me in too. I am looking forward to finally getting in on the ground floor of one of these cable series. Usually I don’t hear about them until they are already acclaimed and I am way behind.
CynDee
Need pics and more pics of Teh Big Kitteh — better than ANYTHING on the teevee.
ThankMew.

I have a good friend on the show. He loves it. And he’s pretty sure he makes it through the first 13. They wrap 8/2.
SiubhanDuinne
I second CynDee.
Need moar Tunch!!
Thxbai.
Comrade Mary
I’m going out for a cooldown ride. Sure would be nice to have a little hit of Tunch when I come back.

This kind of writing and analysis is what Greenwald is best at.

The Yanquis game is on in 20, they dare to tread on the west coast again.
Ahhhhhh, the hatred. It is good.

The pilot seemed like a total mess for me, but the acting and atmosphere was enough for me to give a couple more episodes a try. There’s a chance it could turn into something really good.

I’m in NYC. It’s as near 100 degrees, if not in fact over, as makes damn near no difference. And I have no air conditioning.
So I decided to go to the movies and looked up the local theater listings, only to discover what the Hell Multiplex looks like:
More proof, as if any more were needed, that there is no God. Only Satan.

I am utterly astounded to see that SATC 2 is still in theaters. I thought that fucker bombed the bomb of no-audience bombs after its first weekend.

MikeJ
@JGabriel: The new print of À Bout de Soufflé is on at Film Forum. It’s one of my favorite movies.
Of course it was made 50 years ago.
JGabriel
@MikeJ: Sigh, I already have Breathless on DVD. And Une Femme Est Une Femme, Contempt, Pierre Le Fou, Masculin Feminin, … etc., and so on. You get the picture.
Also, I’m on the east side and wanted to stay within walking distance. So I’ll just plan on something for tomorrow instead, probably something at the Quad or Cinema Village, since they’re not too far a walk. I’ve read good things about both the latest Resnais (Wild Grasses) and Jaoui (Please Give) films, as well as Dogtooth and Amenabar’s Agora.
Winter’s Bone is another one I’d like to see, but I’m not really in the mood to hike down to the Angelika for it.
Yeah, I’m being a lazy slacker. Because it’s a hundred fucking degrees, that’s why!
.
MMM
Thanks. You are a true friend. But do not call me tonight.
JGabriel
3M, who are you talking to? I think you may have posted a reply to the wrong thread?

First Hummingbird pic this year, and first attempt at a night shot with flash. Not easy to manual focus on these quick dudes.

Rubicon: Not every conspiracy is a theory.
That’s the essence of global oligopoly by the Squid.
Pilot made sense to me, so the series should be compelling.
but then, I’m a sucker/believer in deep crap that controls all the levers. GS/JPM, Big Oil, Big Ag, Big Pharma, Big Lobbying, government for sale…. et. al.
MikeJ
@JGabriel:
Me too. Criterion edition. But if the new print plays out here in the stix, I’ll still go see it.

@General Egali Tarian Stuck: Yay! I did pretty well this afternoon by aiming at a spot where hummers often hover and clicking away when one came into the viewfinder. The autofocus can find the right focus faster than I ever could, tho it takes a lot of luck as well.

The television will not be revolutionized.
(+1, which is not nearly + enough)
General Egali Tarian Stuck
@jeffreyw: Nice images. Yea, I only use auto focus during the day, unless I am trying to catch a moment of two in combat, then I just pick a spot on manual focus and wait for the birds to enter it. I don’t even look thru the viewfinder, just eyeball it, and try to anticipate their next move.. The night thing though is tough, but I will keep practicing. The hordes are running a little late this year, but it is picking up some.

Now that I’ve gotten myself a decent car, I’m going to park it for a few months. I’m leaving in a couple of weeks to Afghanistan to do some relief work. I’ll check in when I can. Or I won’t, because I suspect I’ll spend what little internet time I’ll have with my family.
Stay well and safe all.
jeffreyw
@soonergrunt: stay frosty, man
Polish the Guillotines
@soonergrunt:
Please take your own advice, sooner. Good luck.

@soonergrunt:
bring us back some lithium, and some poppys just in case.
asiangrrlMN
@soonergrunt: Take care of yourself, you hear? Check in when you can.
Cole, I support the Tunchie photo-bomb request. Pleeeeeease?
MattR
@asiangrrlMN: I am gonna kick it up a notch and request a Tunch web cam (although I am a bit wary of the reaction from the commentariat here – there may be a greater decline in work productivitity than from the World Cup)
CaseyL
@soonergrunt: Stay safe. Hurry back.
asiangrrlMN
@MattR: If you can get Cole to do that, I would be ever so grateful. People have periodically thrown it out there, but alas, to no avail. I think Cole is afraid it will catch him mopping nekkid or something. Still, I can but dream.
MattR
@asiangrrlMN: Lame excuses from our host. There has to be a way to mount a camera to catch a favorite Tunch spot while maintaining some amount of privacy fopr John. But OTOH, I really don’t want to find out how many hours a day I would spend staring at a sleeping Tunch. And I think that would make Ellie jealous.
apistat
It looked mildly interesting but I’ve sorta decided against watching it due to two incredibly hacky parts:
1. The thing about his wife/kids dying on 9/11.
2. “You used to be great at cracking codes… until one day the codes cracked you.” UGH.
asiangrrlMN
@MattR: I probably would have it open all day long and peek in on him many times
a dayan hour. And, given that apparently, Tunchie’s fave place is the futon (or perhaps his new very own room), it should be fairly easy for Cole to put up a non-intrusive cam.Your last point is well-taken, however. I’m sure the boys would give me the stink-eye if I spent all my time cooing over Tunchie. “He’s not even black, bitch. Feed us.”
IndyLib
@soonergrunt:
Stay safe and good on ya’. The more decent people working over there on all levels, the better.
JGabriel
@MikeJ:
Oops, sorry for going on about the area theaters then. I figured you for a local from the reference to Film Forum.
.
JGabriel
@apistat:
BWAHAHAHA! That is truly terrible writing. Nice catch, apistat.
I haven’t watched it yet, but your observation has made it much less pressing.
.
MikeJ
@JGabriel: Displaced east coaster. Well, not dis so much as different. But Film Forum is an old friend.

@soonergrunt: Be safe! And let us know what you’re doing there.

@soonergrunt: Ki o tsukete kudasai Sooner-san. Don’t worry too much about us, we’ll be snarky as ever when you return to the home shores.

@soonergrunt: You stay well and safe yourself, and may the time pass quickly for you.

@stuckinred #41: Enjoy. We’re back in the mid-90s by tomorrow. But I must say the last five or six days have been very pleasant.

What has Obama done to moderate the heat wave. The former president would have issued statements and sent the guard out by now. Gee.

President Mitt warns that Kenyonesian America-weakener Obama wants to let Russia kill us all with his seditious new treaty and Obama tried to marry Hugo Chavez when he tried to mess with a fine military coup in Honduras which threw their President out of power.

@SiubhanDuinne: I enjoy every day.
SiubhanDuinne
Apropos of nothing (since there’s no sign of a morning open thread), I just heard an interview with MoDo on NPR. I don’t think I’ve ever heard her speak before, and I was honestly shocked at what an *old* voice she has. Quite a contrast to the persona that she conveys in her columns and the photos I’ve seen. Just a total mismatch to the kind of bridling, simpering, aren’t-I-a-clever-little-girl image she works so hard to cultivate.
stuckinred
@SiubhanDuinne: Funny how that happens. I love Natalie Goldberg’s books and when I heard a recording of a presentation she did I was dumbstruck. What I thought Natalie Goldberg from Joisey was going to sound like I don’t know but it shook me up.
SiubhanDuinne
@stuckinred: Interesting. I’ve also never heard her, but I’m a big fan. I had a friend who spent a week in a writers’ workshop with her, right about the time *Writing Down the Bone* was published.
So, uh, what *did* she sound like?
Maybe related, I worked in radio for years (on air) and as such often came across people who “knew” me without ever having met me. I’ll never forget one guy who, on meeting in person, blurted out “Oh, I’m so disappointed! From your voice, I always thought you’d be a tall brunette!” (For the record, I had light brown hair at the time — and I’ve never been taller than 5’2″ in my life.)

@stuckinred:
Mid 90’s in DFW today, but mid 80’s the rest of the week….unbelievable and very welcome. Should make my A/C bill lower this month.
stuckinred
@SiubhanDuinne: Like a nice Jewish girl from Joisey! It was dumb of me to expect something different. This clip is actually less pronounced, maybe years in Taos have taken the edge off or maybe I knew what to expect.

that new series “Rubicon” is the “Three Days of the Condor” turned into a tv series. About time.

OT: interesting article via antiwar.com: “Thaddeus Russell argues that it’s time to ask if [Israel] makes Americans safer—even if the answer makes everyone very uncomfortable.”

Stage 3 of Fox-driven freakout about another fake right wing alleged scandal.
Of course Fox is pursuing its normal high levels of journalistic professionalism.
Maybe if a couple of white kids dress up in black clothes and dark sunglasses and berets and go to a New Black Panther office — or maybe just a Waffle House and claim it’s a New Black Panther office — and ask for help building weapons of mass destruction, the billion dollar news media can follow its ACORN action line, demand action be taken against this hideous dangerous organization, and then quietly make a few ‘corrections’ some months later as the story turns to shit.

@El Cid:
with enough boehner bronzer, i’m sure o’keffe could pull this off, and boehner would give o’keffe the special whole body application, which won’t hurt o’keffe’s career any, you know, having that kind of unfettered access.
Alice Blue
The first time I heard this New Black Panther party intimidation story was when I was working the polls during the Presidential election. I woman I know (who is a rabid wingnut) came in hyperventilating about “voter suppression by Black Panthers” at a precinct in Philadelphia. I assumed it was something she had heard from Rush or Faux news.

Don’t quite know how to break this to people…
… but they crossed the Rubicon in this country about two generations ago. See also: CIA, NSA, DIA, plus the rest of the alphabet soup of “secret” police agencies we’re not allowed to know the initials of.
Talking about any sort of conspiracy — corporatist, governmental, militarist, Boy Scout-run — supposedly running things in this country from deep behind the scenes is about as silly as Hillary talking about the vast Right-Wing Conspiracy. They’re running things from out front!
It’s not a conspiracy if you don’t even have to bother to hide the thing anymore. You can’t keep crossing the Rubicon in your march away from a republic if that border is now 60 years in your rear-view mirror.

Bought some vanilla beans from Amazon. Due in today, hope they are as nice as they claim. Going to make some vanilla extract with some vodka, or maybe dark Jamaica rum. Maybe both.

i watched it after the season finale of breaking bad, and i did not really like it, though it may be because anything compared with that masterful hour of television is obviously not going to hold up so well.
