Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

“Alexa, change the president.”

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

Museums are not America’s attic for its racist shit.

Just because you believe it, that does not make it true.

This chaos was totally avoidable.

Hell hath no fury like a farmer bankrupted.

People are weird.

“Perhaps I should have considered other options.” (head-desk)

Giving in to doom is how authoritarians win.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

They think we are photo bombing their nice little lives.

“I was told there would be no fact checking.”

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

You cannot shame the shameless.

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. do not touch it.”

Shut up, hissy kitty!

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

If a good thing happens for a bad reason, it’s still a good thing.

You come for women, you’re gonna get your ass kicked.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

    Hanging out at the Stockholm airport after a 12 hour layover has turned into a 16 hour layover. I guess once you make it past 12 it doesn’t matter right? At least the the coffee is good.

    @valdivia: Holy crap. Yeah, no. I did a…twelve hour? Fourteen? I block it out–it was supposed to be two. Something like that shift once. NEVER EVER THE FUCK AGAIN. Good luck!

    @asiangrrlMN:

    Thanks! Actually I am on my way back from a wedding in Koln and I never really quite got any sleep while there (yeah, it was that kind of wedding) so I finally gave in and took a room for a few hours and caught up on my sleep. The room was like a cell and it was the most expensive 4 hours of sleep I ever got but I feel better for it since it looks like by the time I get to the US and manage to get on a train to get home I will have been traveling for 36+ hours. Fun!

    @valdivia: Urrk, and if I remember correctly, there’s not much at Arlanda. At least you enjoy the coffee and can maybe eventually boast of enjoying (sic) a near midnight sun — certainly an overly late sunset — on an overly long layover.

    @valdivia: Is it too complicated to go through Customs and get out into Sverige? At least your flight isn’t canceled due to volcanic ash and you’d be forced to stay in a sociaIist paradise. Quelle horreur!

    @asiangrrlMN: I don’t do layovers beyond three hours if I can avoid it. And I try to avoid it like the plague. I also do as many direct flights as possible, I HATE switching flights. It’s one of the things I love about Expedia, I can pretty set up my flight plans as I want them.

    I’m trying to decide if this will be epic or massive fail: Meryl Streep as Margaret Thatcher. It’s Meryl so zero doubt she can pull it off, the big issue is Meryl is like 5’9″ and Maggie as I recall was 5’2″ at most. So it might be a bit of a stretch.

    @scav:

    yep there is nothing really and when I arrived (at midnight) the airport was totally empty so hanging out here seemed like not a good idea. This is what happens when you buy a really really cheap flight and then end up having to pay in some other way ;)

    @Yutsano: oh I would have loved to have to stay here in the sushalist paradise. if it was cancelled at least I have acquaintances that can put me up in their communist abode.

    @asiangrrlMN:
    yeah, let’s just say that when you end up at The Thai Royal Hotel at 3 am singing the kareoke version of Peggy Lee’s ‘Fever’ with an improptu chorus by the Koln Fire Brigade (I kid you not) and that is *before* the wedding celebrations have started in earnest, you are in for a crazy weekend.

    @Yutsano: Yeah. It was an unexpected layover, shall we say. Fuck you, Northwest! PDX. I was supposed to leave around two in the afternoon. Didn’t leave until midnight, and I had to change plans at fucking O’hare (first time) around five in the morning. NOT A HAPPY CAMPER! I was wondering where you were. I bet you can’t wait to jet.

    yeah. The night before I sang Dont Cry for me Argentina. Not because I wanted to, but on a dare. I am told there are pictures. I am hoping there aren’t! Joking aside. It was the best wedding ever and a really great way to get to know a little bit of germany. It was my first time there and Koln is beautiful.

    @valdivia: Granted, the pictures I recall seeing of her were standing next to Reagan and he was something around 6’2″, so maybe my perception is off. But he towered over her as I recall.

    when you end up at The Thai Royal Hotel at 3 am singing the kareoke version of Peggy Lee’s ‘Fever’ with an improptu chorus by the Koln Fire Brigade

    I find myself quite intrigued now. And yes Köln is an exceptional city I agree. Granted when I was in Germany I was sick the whole time we stayed in München so all I got to see there was a gorgeous old synagogue (they wouldn’t let us in until they could see our passports then I didn’t dare go beyond the vestibule because I didn’t have my yarmulke with me) and Berlin was just breathtaking beyond belief. But being on the Rhine and getting into trouble there was a great adventure. It helped I speak German too! They LOVED me for that!

    @asiangrrlMN: Well enough to hold a conversation: German and Japanese. Okay enough to not be a complete idiot: French, Italian, and Spanish. Bits and pieces of Hebrew, Russian, and Mandarin. Oh and some Latin as well (choir legacy). I’m seriously considering beefing up the French and the Japanese in the next year or so just for my own purposes.

    When I have my meeting with my head boss on Thursday, I may end up playing the game of brutal honesty. I knew when I took the job I was overqualified for it, but I wanted to go somewhere with the company and they elected to not let me grow with them. So if the choice is to stay stagnant but safe or take the risk and move on, I’m taking the risk. And yeah I realize what I just said there is the total opposite of what happened with me and the Dawg.

    @valdivia: If anything the Germans are more than happy to speak English with you. Case in point: I was at a college student’s home (I was at the time as well) and up until dinner with her boyfriend that night we had been speaking German. Finally in the middle of one of my sentences she put her hand to my face and said “STOP!” I said, “What?” she said (in English) “You’re speaking German.” I said “Yeah.” She said “But we speak English.” Came to understand they both WANTED me to speak English so they could practice with me. It was a really funny moment. That and saying something in German to shopkeepers and them answering me in English. It was a touch on the surreal side but a helluva lot of fun.

    @Yutsano: You are multilingual, indeed. And, go for honesty with your company. Who cares now? I think it’s easier for people to take risks in some areas of their lives, but not others.

    And ahnee loh mudabair ivrit. I transliterate it a bit differently than others do, I go for more of a phonetic style. That and I forgot the word for “much”. :)

    Oh the Germans I met almost seemed reverent over me being Jewish. They take “never forget” to heart very deeply. I think it makes them much more sensitive to the Palestinian issue, and no I’m not trying to thread hijack.

    @asiangrrlMN: I’m never going to let you forget that even after I listed my ethnic background here several times you still thought I was a blond. I shall massively giggle over that for quite some time.

It was in the long walkway between the main terminal and the terminal where the flights from London came in. When I lived in London I commuted to Arlanda for a month or two.

    I’ve been lurking. Yutsano, i’ve got a mild smattering of latin thanks ot my choir days and now from my work as a pharm tech. I’m amused how just a little of it worked across the way. It also helped when i was learning spanish in high school.

    I’m still learning japanese myself. I consider that one my vanity language, since its really not useful beyond my hobbies. Which is listening to a lot of japanese music, watching qiute a bit of the tv shows (anime and non anime nowadays). Now with added forays into South Korea’s tv and radio stuffage.

    @valdivia: I personally blame Southwest Airlines. I HATE the fucking cattle call boarding system. Course I tend to not like them in general. Lowest fares my ass. Three fourths of the time I get a better deal on Alaska and the service puts theirs to shame.

    @valdivia: They are traveling, therefore they must keep moving no matter what. Someone nearly trampled my kid when we were boarding our last flight to the UK, but she let out a RageSqueak, and he backed off.

    Since this is an open thread, I’ll just say that one of the saddest summers of my life was when I was 12, grew eleventy-three inches, and realized that I was too tall to keep doing ballet and gymnastics. Still, to this day, I fantasize.

    @valdivia: Youknow, hopscotch. The kiddie game where you hop around on a grid. they had a big one drawn on the floor at Arlanda. But I haven’t been there in several years.

    @Yutsano: Alaska may have cheap flights, but I prefer pilots that don’t believe that death is preferable to life. That’s why no airline should put religious tracts in the seat backs like Alaska does.

    @MikeJ: As with most things in life, YMMV. Of course Alaska’s home city is Seattle (there’s an irony there, but don’t tell Bible Spice) so that may also have some influence on my choice as well.

    And I just remembered you’re from Seattle and would have known that. I shall now phone my podiatrist and see if he can squeeze me in first thing tomorrow morning.
