Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

The GOP couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

“Everybody’s entitled to be an idiot.”

Let’s finish the job.

Only Democrats have agency, apparently.

After roe, women are no longer free.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

Balloon Juice has never been a refuge for the linguistically delicate.

You can’t love your country only when you win.

Let there be snark.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Not all heroes wear capes.

Usually wrong but never in doubt

The republican caucus is already covering themselves with something, and it’s not glory.

Come on, man.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

T R E 4 5 O N

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Is it irresponsible to speculate? It is irresponsible not to.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Jeff Danziger is still the best political cartoonist in America.

Also, Garry Trudeau is stalking Sarah Palin.

I’d like to go on a side tangent to mention how worthless our Department of Defense is in promoting a fatbody web commenter (who does an incessant amount of internet posting during duty hours) to SFC. You’d think that Our Valiant Warrior Officers would smack the shit out of a chubby DJ and expect real work, instead of enabling him doing conservative posting on the internet.

RIP, Daniel Schorr. One of the things I most remember from listening to NPR when I was younger were his commentaries. Few of today’s journalists are of his caliber. Truly a great career.

Jim Webb may have been preferable to George Allen, but he should have absolutely no support after writing something as stupid as this

I could quote passages from it, but the title suffices to show what sort of bullshit Webb’s spewing: “Diversity and the Myth of White Privilege”.

I really don’t have anything more than contempt for what is left of the conservative movement. It annoys me to no end that I bought into a lot of their bullshit enough to actually be somewhat a part of the movement while I was in law school. Maybe I had scales on my eyes, but I honestly don’t remember them being so fucking insane back then – sure I heard a few people talk, theoretically, about trying to repeal the 17th Amendment but I don’t remember anyone thinking it was anything other than a pipe dream. Now I watch them and am simply disgusted, perhaps that’s what I get for staring into the Wingularity like the Master staring into the Untempered Schism.

@thefncrow: His whole argument seems to be that in the old south they had the white elite, the white trash, and black people, in that order. Now there’s nobody for the white trash to look down on and IT’S NOT FAIR!

Saw “Inception” last night. No review, cause I don’t wanna spoil it, but a few things.

    1. I’ve finally found a Leonardo DiCaprio movie that I actually liked. I’m not a fan, it just kinda freaks me out that he still looks about 25 even though he’s gotta be over 33-35. maybe it just bothers me cause we are ’bout the same age, and I sure don’t look 25!!! Damn me and my love of food.

    2. Joseph Gordon-Levitt steals the show for me. He’s come a long way from “3rd Rock from the Sun” and “Angels in the Outfield”. The other actor named Tom Hardy (google it) was def a scene stealer.

    3. OMG!! Dream fight sequences are da bomb!!!!!! I’ll leave it at that!

Forewarning, the movie is 2hr 30min long. If you have a small bladder, you might want to go before the movie, cause I’m told that if you leave the movie for an extended time, you WILL miss something.

Anyway, I def recommend “Inception”. Next up Angelina Jolie and “Salt”

@thefncrow: granted, he sounds like a tool for obvious reasons. But, I for one wouldn’t mind seeing affirmative action type programs, particularly in the academic world, but based more on socio-economic status than race. A poor white kid growing up in a poor neighborhood is going to face the same problems as a black or Latin kid in those neighborhoods. Basing such things on something as fungible as race seems stupid – I’m half-Cuban, half-gringo; let’s say I have a kid with a girl who is half-Asian and half-black, what race is the kid other than human? Actually, stupid isn’t the right word. It probably made sense in the 1960s when a lot of these programs were first designed. But today? I think relying too much on race or ethnicity is taking the easy way out.

I do this with the phone sometimes:

Vital warning systems on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig were switched off at the time of the explosion in order to spare workers being woken by false alarms, a federal investigation has heard.

Though when I miss a phone call it usually doesn’t result in an environmental disaster. Usually.

@lamh: you didn’t like Catch Me If You Can? That film was the first DiCaprio film I saw where I didn’t think of him as annoying. And whoever thought of the Romeo & Juliet interpretation should be beaten with hard bound versions of the collective works of the Bard.

Speaking of funny things, this sentence from Felix Salmon’s piece on why Obama will appoint Elizabeth Warren to the new financial consumer protection agency made me lol:

Megan McArdle doesn’t like the methodology in [Warren’s] research papers; again, this is not a big deal.

McCardle was having trouble doing long division the other day, you may recall.

    @Mark S.:

Cripes, BP’s (and Deepwater’s) multi-faceted disregard for safety makes them seem more like murderers with each new day. I wonder if they’ve hired Don Blankenship yet?

Of course on the good ol’ Oil Drum comments along the lines of, “Well, it’s either turn them off or endure continual false alarms” are par for the course.

Perhaps a new motto is in order: “Safety: now, more than just an annoying joke.”

I just bought an iPod Touch, so I don’t expect much in the way of my programming homework to get done tonight.

    4:30 can’t come soon enough.

Money has been tight lately, but that’s mostly cause I’ve been helping friends out (which I don’t regret at all). Its just nice to pamper myself for once.

@lamh: Seconded. This movie really makes you work to follow it, but it’s well worth it to see such a meticulous construction.

And after all the levels of the characters’ dream come to a more or less simultaneous end, the movie itself ends. The viewers wake up together from their own shared dream, and leave the theater. Nice touch, that.

And is Ellen Page cute, or what?

I got to take Mr. Keaton to the vet today since he seems to have caught Tunch’s ass boil (though in this case, the boil was on his chin, not his ass). Hooray for the new 10-day antibiotic shot that means I don’t have to try and pill a 13-pound cat who has all his claws! Huzzah!

Then he rubbed his chin so fiercely on his carrier during the 10 minute ride home that I had to mop up blood when I got home. Fun.

    @Mnemosyne:

What is it with cats and boils recently? My cousins’ cat developed a nasty infected boil on her side a few weeks ago. But that kapow antibiotic shot seems to have done the trick. I know the last time she (cat) had an infection, they had to deal with the pills, which was messy and unpleasant for everyone, plus Widget lost her appetite as a side effect. She’s close to 20 years old now, so this is a much easier way to deal with it.
