Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Take hopelessness and turn it into resilience.

The real work of an opposition party is to hold the people in power accountable.

Second rate reporter says what?

To the privileged, equality seems like oppression.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

The arc of history bends toward the same old fuckery.

When I was faster i was always behind.

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

Cancel the cowardly Times and Post and set up an equivalent monthly donation to ProPublica.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

In after Baud. Damn.

I really should read my own blog.

American history and black history cannot be separated.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

“Perhaps I should have considered other options.” (head-desk)

Rupert, come get your orange boy, you petrified old dinosaur turd.

Be a wild strawberry.

If rights aren’t universal, they are privilege, not rights.

Those who are easily outraged are easily manipulated.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

My cat is in the animal hospital. She’s been vomiting bile for days, won’t eat, and doesn’t appear to have a bowel obstruction. I adopted her from a shelter back in ’02. She was between six and eight then, so is between fourteen to sixteen now. The vet just told me that they are going to do an ultrasound, but she believes the cat likely has pancreatic cancer.

I think I’m going to have to go to the hospital and put her down tonight. I know she’s had a long life and has been treated well for the last eight years. But I’m still in emotional turmoil. I really love this cat.

    Fuck.

Didn’t have a chance to say this in your intro thread E.D., but thanks for posting and braving what will probably be some snark and commentary. But its all in good spirit – we can be snarky but we don’t want you gone. Unless you start letting BOB guest post when you are on vaca sully-style!

I thought there was something wrong with the speakers on my laptop because I kept turning the volume up and couldn’t hear anything.

Yeah, it’s sad and pretty and sleep inducing.

Got anything with a beat and some RAWKIN’ guitars?

    @Punchy:

But, see, they were defending real religions like Christianity and Judiasm, not these fakey scam “religions” like Islam and Hinduism that everyone knows the First Amendment doesn’t apply to. So therefore no hypocrisy at all, QED.

Okay, on to fun stuff. I recently knuckled down and bought a Scooba (robot mopping machine from iRobot) and have been trying it out this week. Went through Hammacher Schlemmer since they offer a lifetime warranty well beyond iRobot’s one-year version.

White tile floors in the kitchen are now actually white, and non-sticky, again. The first day I tried it I had it run 3 times in the kitchen and nook to get all the YUCK. The dirty water tank was a revelation – in a much-worse-than-expected way. We’ll run it every couple of days to maintain things. Just did today’s session and found the dirty tank water was much less, um, thick and zesty. WOOHOO! What’s nice is it always puts clean water on the floor, and sucks up the dirty – unlike mopping with a bucket, you get no sloshing of already crappy slop.

I’m recharging it now to tackle the hardwood floors in the dining room and hallway. For cleaning, we just use vinegar, the enclosed samples of floor cleaner weren’t all that impressive. I have to figure out which of their vacuums will work out best for us, there are so many models to choose from it’s hard to keep it straight, I really like the concept of cleaning more often via robot. It never seems to work out to “often enough” when it’s just down to me alone.

    @Gina:

I’m always tempted by a Roomba, but I know for a fact that this would happen, and one of our cats is a 13-pound Maine Coon mix. Not a good combination. He already broke our printer/scanner by jumping on it.

@Mnemosyne: Nice! So far my 3 cats just flounce off in a huff when Scooba’s going. Of course, that involves some water, so I don’t know if they’d find the dry version more interesting. Mostly they just scoff and stalk off to their favorite windowsill whenever annoying “new things” show up in the house.

I do make sure the Rotties are all cordoned off, since bouncing on and chomping disk-shaped objects is considered super fun by all of mine.

My condolences. That sucks. But it sounds like she’s pretty miserable right now without a promise of improvement, so you’re doing the right thing.

@blahblahgurgleblegblah: I’m sorry. I wish there were something to say that would make it better, but there isn’t. I’ve been where you are, and I’m really sorry.
