Random Acts of Bad Campaigning

Here’s Rand Paul basically running away from a local news reporter after doing a Fox News interview at the reporter’s station (at about 1:30). It’s not quite up to the high standard set by Sharron Angle, but it’s still pretty lethal. Rand isn’t running for the office of Senator from Fox News, but he and Angle both act as they are.

The quote from this Newsweek article about Angle running from reporters suggests watching the video while playing yakkety sax.

In mid-June she escaped from local TV reporter Nathan Baca who was determined to press her on the issues she outlined in the primary. The footage shows a blurry, nervous Angle moving very fast toward her car. Yesterday’s video, from another campaign appearance in Reno, is even more stark. As soon as she sees reporters approaching, Angle turns and bolts from a building, without a word spoken. (We recommend setting it to this music.)

I can’t remember any time else where a reporter suggests a soundtrack to their reporting, but I like the idea, a lot. Rand Paul should always be introduced with this.

You see, his wife’s upset about it and he doesn’t feel like he should have to talk about it. So there you go.

The local media was pretty soft on Paul. The Nevada media was a lot more critical of Angle’s runaway act.

I think Paul’s a bozo and I hope to FSM he loses, but he’s absolutely right to not answer questions about this. It’s an anonymous accusation ferchrissakes.

You guys need to show a little bit of intellectual honesty and consistency, methinks.

I bet Rand is probably still ahead in the polls in Ky. I cannot believe this so not ready from primetime maroon is the Senate candidate for the Repubs. I know we talk about the Repubs and how wingnutty they’ve become but still Princess Sarah in 08 followed by Angle and Rand Paul this year. For real??? The stupid really has taken over the GOP. Also too, anybody else get the feeling Rand Paul just sees an opportunity to leech off the Teabaggers and make an easy living off speeches and selling stuff with this name on it?

@mario: Paul already spoke to reporters about it when he denied ever kidnapping anyone. He could have denied the rest of it too but didn’t.

Angle and Paul are betting the local & non-ideological media is irrelevant in 2010. Although it pains me to say, I think they will prove to be 100% accurate wit this gamble. Most people aren’t paying attention and when they do, it is to whatever source has already filtered the content for their viewpoint.

And the racists at his whistle-stop are a plant? For real?

I thought Aqua-Buddhists were more chill. Maybe all that weed is making Paul paranoid.

Sorry, I know that wasn’t “intellectually honest.” I forgot the Objectivists were watching.

    Now I’m feeling paranoid…

This business model of running for office only using FOX News as a media outlet can only work if the Teabagger’s opponent suffers an extreme scandal in the middle of campaigning. Let’s call it Hail Mary electioneering, for lack of a better phrase.

And for these extremists, it’s definitely worth a shot. It’s better than actually campaigning on their stands on the issues.

I can’t help but think that running from the press might help these people.

When your base thinks that the Theory of Relativity is a liberal plot and the banks put a secret number on the back of your Social Security card, you don’t get any points for pandering to reality.

How has Rand been tracking in the polls since all this started?

    @Politically Lost:

I think it’s bullshit to have an anonymous story like this become news.

I tend to agree with you on this. Has anyone else been interviewed who was there at the time? So far, the whole thing is typical of the kind of ambiguous smear job that lacks context and invites everyone who hears about it to insert their own level of outrage. Most voters discount this stuff, but it may peel off some voters and provides a distraction.
