Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Dear elected officials: Trump is temporary, dishonor is forever.

So fucking stupid, and still doing a tremendous amount of damage.

Their shamelessness is their super power.

Books are my comfort food!

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

If a good thing happens for a bad reason, it’s still a good thing.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. do not touch it.”

Democracy cannot function without a free press.

Republicans in disarray!

Reality always lies in wait for … Democrats.

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Baby steps, because the Republican Party is full of angry babies.

I would try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

No Kings: Americans standing in the way of bad history saying “Oh, Fuck No!”

At some point, the ability to learn is a factor of character, not IQ.

Fundamental belief of white supremacy: white people are presumed innocent, minorities are presumed guilty.

“Just close your eyes and kiss the girl and go where the tilt-a-whirl takes you.” ~OzarkHillbilly

The low info voters probably won’t even notice or remember by their next lap around the goldfish bowl.

Nothing says ‘pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

Welcome to day five of every-bit-as-bad-as-you-thought-it-would-be.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Trumpflation is an intolerable hardship for every American, and it’s Trump’s fault.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

From commentor Michael (who lives with Lucy):

This is Mr. Ron Swannson. He is a ridiculously friendly stray kitty who followed me home. So, I got him neutered and his shots, and found a neighbor to take him in. He is super-friendly, and apparently now spends all day on his owner’s lap purring. He’s basically the best cat in the world.

***********

(Michael also sent me a pic of him with Ron and Lucy, but my sub-par PaintShop skills won’t let me post it here. Maybe next time…)

    KITTEH!!

That does it. I know he just had a kidlet, but I’m starting a petition drive for ED to get an animal of some sort now. Cat, dog, bird, reptile (turtles are amazingly easy to care for and quite fun), anything. But petless is no way to go through life.

He looks like such a sweetie!

We’re leaving for the airport in three hours; we’ll be gone for two weeks. It’s the first time we’ve both been away since we got the kitten. I am sad.

Has anyone ever taken a cat on a plane?

We’ve got 4 cats (2 “outside” boys and two “inside” girls) that basically adopted us when they were kittens. We lost two great old-timers last year, plus one “neighborhood gent” who used to hang with our gang– a drifter-yet-hanger-on that I named “Yakk” (an acronym for ‘Yet Another Kitty Kat– we have a lot of feral hangers-on at the manse.)

That said, I wanted to pass on a vid from a friend who’s done some serious work for dog rescue, and needs support:

    youtube.com/watch?v=sKmnF3a7fkY

It’s worth watching if you can stand the sight of cute, adoptable puppies just barely saved from being euthed. It’s the first mention I’d seen of a group called “Pilots 4 Paws”– awesome.

The video is great (apart from the sound– hey, it’s an airport) and it was cute enough that 3 local S. Fla. stations ran it on the news.
Result? Nada. No adoptions, no support, not a dime from anyone.
I think the puppies are still available, so if any BJuicer from south Florida sees this and can’t resist, the contact info is in the video.

    Not pet related.

Turn off Fox stickers for free (with shipping)
Order more than 1 for a small donation (5 stickers for $3 and so on, courtesy of colorofchange.org). Put it on your cars, bikes, doors etc. Distribute to your friends and family.

    Bill Gates’ favorite teacher

FORTUNE — Sal Khan, you can count Bill Gates as your newest fan. Gates is a voracious consumer of online education. This past spring a colleague at his small think tank, bgC3, e-mailed him about the nonprofit khanacademy.org, a vast digital trove of free mini-lectures all narrated by Khan, an ebullient, articulate Harvard MBA and former hedge fund manager. Gates replied within minutes. “This guy is amazing,” he wrote. “It is awesome how much he has done with very little in the way of resources.” Gates and his 11-year-old son, Rory, began soaking up videos, from algebra to biology. Then, several weeks ago, at the Aspen Ideas Festival in front of 2,000 people, Gates gave the 33-year-old Khan a shout-out that any entrepreneur would kill for. Ruminating on what he called the “mind-blowing misallocation” of resources away from education, Gates touted the “unbelievable” 10- to 15-minute Khan Academy tutorials “I’ve been using with my kids.” With admiration and surprise, the world’s second-richest person noted that Khan “was a hedge fund guy making lots of money.” Now, Gates said, “I’d say we’ve moved about 160 IQ points from the hedge fund category to the teaching-many-people-in-a-leveraged-way category. It was a good day his wife let him quit his job.” Khan wasn’t even there — he learned of Gates’ praise through a YouTube video. “It was really cool,” Khan says.

@Darkrose: Yes. We have taken the two cats on the plane but only for a move from Colorado to the dreaded east coast. I think you have to tell them ahead of time, and they charge you some sort of pet fee (like $50-$75). You put the pet in a soft carrier under the seat in front of you. You take them out of the bag when you go through security. Then you put them back in the bag when they are deeply terrified of the airport. Well, your cat can be deeply terrified or deeply curious at this point. We had one of each. We got some pills from the vet that they could take before boarding so they would not yowl during the whole ride. Some people oppose drugging your pets for the purpose of travel, but life was much better for us this way. We also bought non-stop tickets.

I can only imagine what that’s like with some of my Big Boys who are also riddled with anxiety. I’ll stop before I get mental stitches.

That is one sweet kitty! Lucky neighbor!

A few months ago, I posted about a friend who was doing a major remodel and blogging about it. The remodel started in October and was supposed to finish in March. The final touches went in mid-July, except for one addition that wasn’t part of the contract. A few days ago, they adopted a four-year-old English cocker spaniel, a rescue of course. They’ve named her Ruby.
