The old ones are getting all full.
And I wanted to give a public thank-you to commentor Asiangrrrl, because I’m really lovin’ Girlyman:

I love vocal harmonies, especially those with a woman’s voice leading the way. And this song just feels “summery” to me.
MattR
Fuck you Antimalware Doctor. I have vanquished you from my laptop (knock on wood).
I did get a minor scare when my AmEx was declined at the gas station today. I thought maybe that virus got me good before I got it. But there were no unknown charges. I think the AmEx computers got confused because my previous purchases seemed to indicate that something from nascar.com must be fraudulent. I can’t believe the other option: that it is so stupid that it got confused by me using my card at the Jersey shore.
The Dangerman
I love vocal harmonies, especially those with a woman’s voice leading the way.
Can I just say Nanci Griffith? Gulf Coast Highway and Tecumseh Valley for harmonies; Time of Inconvenience for her politics…

A quintessential summer song with a beautiful woman’s voice: “Warm Weather,” Pieces of a Dream.
roshan
Brother, can you spare a dime……….for the Kochs?
MattR
@roshan: I don’t think it is fair to criticize Nutting. Yet. He just bought the team in 2007 and they were one of the worst three or four teams in terms of talent throughout their organization. IMO, he has done the right thing and tried to rebuild the organization from the bottom up. Spending an extra $10-15 million each of the past couple years would have gotten them a handful more wins but would not have done anything to help them in the long run. Better to save the money now and use it once your new, young talent reaches the majors. Of course, Nutting could just pocket the profits and refuse to put it back into the team when it really needs it. If that happens I will definitely jump on him for it.
roshan
Marijuana is legal, but where are all the criminals?
MattR
@roshan: @MattR: I should have added the disclaimer that I am sure that some (most?) MLB teams are doing shady things with their finances for a variety of reasons.
Yutsano
@roshan: Well, either HCR benefits as broad a swath of the population as possible or it’s just a giveaway to those brown undeserving folks again. This does need broader coverage though. Paging Rachel Maddow…
asiangrrlMN
Aw, thanks, AL! I adore the Girlyman (though I am somewhat mystified at your characterization of this song), and I want to spread their goodness everywhere I can. Plus, Doris is really cute (long-hair woman), so there is that, too.
@Steeplejack: That would be a good slow stripper jam. It’s on my list.
@Yutsano: I love love love this version of this song. And, the guy with the deep, husky voice…I wouldn’t kick him out of bed (though he looks a bit too much like Matthew McConaughey.
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: Jake Owen? Swarthy single former professional golfer Jake Owen? Did I mention he’s the only single male on that stage? :)
Hi hon. I gots the benefit paperwork today. I finally feel…official.
middlewest
This band had a very Indigo Girls feel to it. Which means you are not qualified to be a supreme court justice. Or something.
Oh, by the way would this be the right thread to introduce some of you to Dessa? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0eQL3BrRqM8
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: Yeah, bay-bee! Him. His voice is yummy. And, congrats on being all official and everything. How does it feel?
P.S. The original version of the song rocks, too.
And just because I can, my current earworm.
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: I thought about putting up a link to the original version because A) it was definitely one of my favorite songs from the 80’s and B) I’m an English horn snob. But I refrained, mostly to emphasize the singers with feminine naughty bits.
It’s starting to hit me that it’s finally happening. I have an office on the 20th floor of a downtown Seattle high rise. I’ll be all officially moved into the condo this weekend. The worm has turned, to borrow a phrase. You may have to ask me tomorrow.
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: It’s all good! Both versions are excellent. And, you’re gonna be living the (literally) high life, indeed. I expect reports, Yutsy.
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: You get Beaker. At least for now.
Or something relating to your current earworm.
That's Master of Accountancy to You, Pal (JMN)
@MattR:
More, just looking at the major league payroll the last few years is misleading. The Pirates have dumped a ton of money into the draft, taking the best player available in the first round (sort of; I’ll get to Tony Sanchez in a minute) and taking a lot of overslot guys in the later rounds, and signing them.
This year, they grabbed two of the best 4-5 pitchers in the entire draft in Jameson Taillon and Stetson Allie. (They got the great names, too.) Mel Rojas Jr. is an interesting kid. There are a couple of other possibilities there, including Nick Kingham.
Last year, they got roasted for taking Sanchez. However, they took the money it didn’t take to sign him to get some late round fliers. Of course, Sanchez now looks pretty damned good, so they may have known what they were doing.
I like the things the Huntington regime is doing with the Pirates. The Marlins, on the other hand, really aren’t much more than a criminal enterprise.
Steeplejack
@asiangrrlMN:
Thanks.
Letting you know in advance that my work schedule is f*cked this week. Work 11:00-6:30 tomorrow, then day shifts–day shifts?! WTF?!–Thursday-Saturday. Start at 8:30, get off anywhere between 3:00 and 5:00. Go figure. Then I’m back to a solid diet of closing shifts next week. This is totally inexplicable. They’re just toying with my circadian rhythms.
Speaking of which, need to get to bed soon to transition to the earlier start tomorrow. (Went in at 3:00 today.) Urgh.
Yutsano
@That’s Master of Accountancy to You, Pal (JMN):
FIFY. And FTMFY.
asiangrrlMN
@Steeplejack: Aw, crap. I’m going to miss you. I just emailed my Taiji teacher about good DVDs/books. Will let you know what she says. And, dayshift? WTF? That’s not very nice of them.
@Yutsano: Hee hee. Beaker makes me laugh. And, yeah, I’ve listened to that Andrea Bocelli song more than once (much to my everlasting shame). Here is the adult version of that song.
MattR
@Yutsano: Be careful. That might get you in trouble at school
El Cid
Modo is highly peeved at the White House Oval Office redecoration, whether or not it was paid for by a separate non-profit. The colors and theme so do not meet her approval. It even reminded her that Al Gore was fat and sighed.
asiangrrlMN
@MattR: Um, what? You’re fucking with us, right? That’s really from the Onion, isn’t it? MEEP MEEP MEEP!
@El Cid: Oh my god. I actually read the whole column and–you’re on the virtual couch tonight, buddy. That was obscene.
suzanne
@Yutsano: Yay! Congrats!
I hate summer. I hate being pregnant. I hate Republicans. That is all.
Yutsano
@MattR: MEEP! There I said it big deal you wanna fight about it? :)
@asiangrrlMN: The bitterness, it is strong in that one. And the NYT pays big bucks for that drivel.
suzanne
@El Cid: Jesus fuck. That woman is such a fucking waste of evolution.
asiangrrlMN
@suzanne: Put your feet up and bitch away. There’s plenty to bitch about, especially in politics.
@Yutsano: I know! I don’t get it. She really is a Mean Girl all growed up. So jealous and shrewish.
@suzanne: You are cracking me up! How about Celebrity Death Match between the two? Winner takes on Sarah Palin.
suzanne
I lied. That is NOT all. I also hate that stupid Barry Eisler ad on the left side of the page that I keep clicking on accidentally. I want to beat Barry Eisler to death with Modo. Or vice versa. I ain’t picky.
Yutsano
@suzanne: :: hands the pregnant lady a cool refreshing sweet tea ::
Breathe hon it’s okay. My friend JUST had her 9 months of torture end and she’s ecstatic. It will be worth it, just ask SamKitten.
suzanne
@asiangrrlMN: I don’t wantvto see Sarah Palin in a fight, even a fight to the death. I don’t want her to die even with the small comfort of more publicity and fame whoring. I’d prefer if she just… disappeared, and her corpse was never found, all CIA-style.
asiangrrlMN
@suzanne: I like your newsletter. How might I subscribe? I agree, though. A simple disappearance would be best.
@Yutsano: You are such a good nurturer! Another reason I fake-married you. You will not be on the virtual couch tonight–unlike El Cid.
@MattR: Meep! How about if I promise you there’s some hawt Dodd on Douthat action? Will that do that?
Listening to Funky right now. Me likey. And, used to love? Are you really so fickle?
MattR
@asiangrrlMN: @ Yutsano: Meep meep meep?
And I just can’t see any way for you to get me to read that MoDo column. So instead here is some live music from 1995 from two bands I used to love
suzanne
@Yutsano: Oh, I know. I have a great kid already, so I know the payoff is coming. But I reserve the right to be in a foul-ass mood in the interim, especially when I read shit like Modo bitching about the fucking decorating. I can’t believe that I wasted brain cells reading that. That’s two minutes of my life… gone.
asiangrrlMN
@suzanne: And this would be different from your normal demeanor…how? Rock on with your bitchy self! I can sympathize with the grouchiness, though not the pregnant part.
@MattR: Moe is definitely good stripper music. Ta.
Yutsano
@MattR: We have our vays. Oh yes, we have our vays of making you read dat. MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!
@asiangrrlMN: I agree that Palin shouldn’t just die. The conspiracy theories alone would be insufferable. I’d rather she got lost in a blizzard in the dead of winter outside Wasilla, preferably drunk.
suzanne
@asiangrrlMN: Normally I take a certain degree of pleasure at the misfortune of conservative assholes. Like reading Failblog. However, right now I’m too pissy to even snark properly. Blar.
roshan
Have some laughs.
I’ve had a vision and I can’t shake it: Colbert needs to hold a satirical rally in DC.
MattR
@asiangrrlMN: Well, I am not as passionate about music anymore so I don’t know that I love any band these days. And anyhow, the Gibb Droll Band broke up long ago. I do have their album Narrow Mouth Jar on my mp3 player and it gets plenty of play in the rotation. As for moe., they still tour and I am going to see them in October but I am one of those “they were better in the good ole days” people. OTOH, I did see them about 15 times during 1997 so there really was only one way for my devotion to go (if I wanted to keep a job).
I don’t know if I should post a link to their attempt at a rock opera (from that same show). I don’t think I have listened to it in 10 years and I know I’ve never seen video of the handful of times they did it live. I feel like I should screen it before linking it (Fair Warning: it is a six parter).
@asiangrrlMN: Maybe in the privacy of your home but not in a professional establishment. I don’t think they can make money charging $20 for a song when that song is over 10 minutes long :)
And nope, still not gonna go anywhere the NY Times. And I really haven’t in a while other than an occasional Krugman link. Don’t think I have missed anything
asiangrrlMN
@suzanne: I hear ya. Some days, things are just too fucked up to properly snark.
@Yutsano: With Newt Gringrich.
@roshan: That would be hilarious–except, I’m not sure the wingers would get it.
MattR, well, I’m checking it out. I may not listen to the whole thing, though. Eh. Too repetitive.
suzanne
@Yutsano: I dunno. I’d suggest the two-wetsuits-and-a-dildo demise, but most likely a fairly large contingent of conservatives would add that to the spank bank. Maybe if she died on the toilet, Elvis-style.
suzanne
@roshan: Oh Lordy yes.
asiangrrlMN
@MattR: And, it sped up considerably, making it much more difficult to dance to it. How about if I told you that…oh, hell. The column was execrable. No reason for you to read it.
MattR
@asiangrrlMN: Just not much of a sadist at heart, huh?
asiangrrlMN
@MattR: No one should be forced to read MoDo. That is just cold-blooded and heartless. Hey, you in Joisey now? How’s Ellie taking it?
Yutsano
@suzanne: She cannot die until she is completely discredited as a national figure. This also holds for Rush and Glenn as well. Death is fine, but abject humiliation would be a much worse punishment.
BTW did we ever get an over/under pool for how long El Rushbo’s number four was going to last? I give it three years.
MattR
@Yutsano: I honestly can’t think of a single scenario where there would not be conspiracy theories. I am reminded of Dave Chappelle describing the evidence it would take for him to convict R Kelly. (jump three minutes in)
MattR
@asiangrrlMN: So far so good. Kinda wish the place had A/C but it is not bad with the ocean breeze and a bunch of fans. Taking some time off during the day to go to the beach tomorrow. Supposed to be 95 and sunny. Ellie does not mind the house and seems to like the sand, but she hates the ocean. She is terrified of the noise and the water. But I am hoping she will gradually get acclimated, especially if she sees other dogs in it. My sister, her husband and possible a couple of my friends are coming by for the weekend. I just hope we don’t get hit by Earl. (EDIT: I have stayed on the private beach near me and have not yet headed down to the touristy area where they film the show. Probably will over the weekend when I have company)
@Yutsano: Nice. Ellie has done that to me when she greets me after I have been gone for a long time (to her)
Yutsano
@MattR: Snort. Awesome. Now shut up and give me the damn cookie.
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: Meaningless line here so I can blockquote you:
Fixed for you.
@MattR: Oh my. This is hilarious from the get-go.
ETA: When he is on, there isn’t anyone funnier than Chappelle.
@Yutsano: Aaaaaaw! That’s cute, sweet, AND funny!
asiangrrlMN
@MattR: Update eleven-billionty because I could not edit in time, FYWP: Sorry to hear that Ellie isn’t liking the beach so much. Me, I would hate the weather. At any rate, where are the pictures of her and the babes in bikinis?
MattR
@asiangrrlMN: She’ll figure it out. I may just carry her into the light surf with me. No pics since I have been on the beach in the evenings. Kinda hard to be subtle when you are using a flash :) Maybe tomorrow. (EDIT: I did meet three nice 50-somethings drinking on the beach who were taken by Ellie)
@Yutsano: Would fading into obscurity be worse than abject humiliation?
asiangrrlMN
@MattR: Oh, sure. If you want to get all technical and shit. Hm. What should I have for dinner?
I think for Palin, no attention would be the worst punishment of all–so mediocre obscurity it is!
MattR
@asiangrrlMN: I am most definitely the wrong one to ask about food suggestions. I can handle myself around the grill but cooking is not my bag. More to the point, cleaning up after myself when I cook is really not my bag.
(EDIT: And on that note, I gotta get to sleep so that I wake up early enough that I can justify disappearing to the beach for a while)
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: Dinner?
Hmm…any 24 hour Thai places nearby? I’m just thinking pad Thai sounds pretty damn awesome.
@MattR:
This is, for me, the proper place for a man. Especially if it gets him the fuck outta my kitchen while I’m trying to make something dammit! I also wholeheartedly approve of drinking beer or other wasting time pursuits while I’m cooking food. I’m very protective of the kitchen area when I cook.
asiangrrlMN
@MattR: Night! Don’t forget the pics.
Mmmmmm….Homemade apple butter, bitchez.
@Yutsano: This is MN, darling. Only Dennys and such are open twenty-four/seven. And, you always want Thai!
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: Um, you iz a man, remember? And, I want someone who will cook for me so I can drink a
beerdiet pop while watching sports.Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: Well to be fair, Thai noodles do tend to be rice-based, so I was thinking of your tummy’s delicate sensibilities. Although blueberry pancakes have been high on my craving list lately. Hell blueberry anything.
And a slightly twisted anime intro about a group of people who may or may not be totally insane. And no the show doesn’t resolve the issue.
@asiangrrlMN: In 90% of my life this is true. When it comes to the kitchen I’m a shameless raving bitch. Hell I’ve even told my mother to get the hell out of my way while I’m cooking. And it takes all my restraint to not take over when I go to her house. It’s more of a sickness than a disease.
NobodySpecial
I’m just poking my head up to see if it’s safe. The Give Up crowd was out in full force earlier right after the BJ FB draft, and I decided I like my sanity.
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: Aw, this is by the director who recently died. He did another one based on a dream analysis machine used to give people nightmares. I want to see that one first. I have another friend who recommends this series, too (Paranoia Agent. And, you are right. Rice-based is much better than wheat-based. I had tapioca bagels with apple butter and fowl. Plus, a side dish of broccoli and raisins smothered in apple butter. I is now satiated.
@Yutsano: Cool! You can do all the cooking.
@NobodySpecial: As it seems to be just Yutsy and me for the moment, I think you are safe. We are both crazed in our own ways, of course, but quite mellow tonight.
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: Nom nom nom!
BTW looked up gluten-free cookie recipes, gonna try a couple out before distribution. I’ll have a few spare days before I start the new gig (WOOT!!) so I’ll do a shit ton of baking. The cheddar scones I refuse to cheat on though so we’re stuck there.
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: Cool! You are a man with a heart of gold, even if you do turn into a shrew in the kitchen. As for cheddar–I’m right there with you. There just is no substitute.
Yutsano
@asiangrrlMN: It would be as if someone asked me to use margarine in any of my baked goods. I would be appalled. I think there is exactly one recipe I can recall where you have to use margarine instead of butter and I don’t make that any more. So all purpose wheat flour and real white cheddar it is. Possibly Irish if I can swing it.
asiangrrlMN
@Yutsano: Sounds yummy. And, I am outie. Night!
Yutsano
And just because we never get enough silliness in our lives. Although I guess this could be an allegory for the Florida election as well.

Thanks for posting Girlyman. What a great sound.

Oh my goodness, Kathleen Parker sure left a mark today in WaPo…it dudn’t get much better than that…
harlana
jeffrey has yet more puppage? This is not to say that said puppage is not adorable and in pairs no less . . . with said cuteness magnified by ear floppage. Perhaps he is fostering.
Steve M.
Wow. A capo. The last time I listened to music made with a capo, Carter was president and I still hadn’t thrown out the last of my bell-bottoms.

And it is Bradley Klahn, the wild card from Stanford, giving Sam Querrey all that he can handle at Armstrong Stadium as I type these words.
(Mahut failed to qualify in singles but is playing doubles. Isner is on the Grandstand later today)

The funniest paragraph I’ve read in quite a while:
That’s a dangerous presumption, sir…
Read the whole thing; it’s awesome. We should encourage Megan to continue writing about different topics, if only to get to witness her being trounced by new, intelligent people.

Thanks, AL – I love discovering new music (& thanks to asiangrrlMN, too!) this song is incredibly lovely. So lovely, in fact, that I just bought it on iTunes!
