Does this analogy work?
Lets say after years of overeating an not exercising you have a heart attack. You go to the hospital and get Doctor Obama. He starts you on a low fat diet and an exercise plan. Two years later you haven’t really lost any weight and you still feel pretty crummy. So you get a second opinion from Doctor DeMint. He wants to switch you to a new diet and exercise regime: eat all of the fried chicken you want and do no exercise at all.
Of course you go for the new plan. What could go wrong?

Not for nothing, but there has been something that I wanna get off my chest since this morning. This rant became too long, so I divided it into 3 parts.
It’s about the FL senate race, and the candidacy of Kendrick Meek.
Let me first start by saying that I am, for those who don’t know, not a FL voter, so I know my opinion don’t matter a hill of beans, but this morning while listening to the “Tom Joyner Morning Show” (for those who don’t know, the TJMS, is the top rated “urban/African American” syndicated morning radio show in the country, if ya don’t know him look it up) and this weekend for his annual “family reunion” event, the TJMS is in FL. One of the contributors to the TJMS is Roland Martin, many of ya’ll might know him in his role as CNN political contributor, well Roland does a daily commentary & interviews on the TJMS, when many leading politico’s both white, black, Latino, etc, from Sen. Arlen Specter, to RNC Chairman Steele, Newt Gingrich to SC guv Mark Sanford (before the Appalachian trail), and of course he has interviewed the President a number of times.
So anyway, Roland was at the TJMS family reunion this morning, and his guest interview was none other than Congressman Kendrick Meek. It just so happened that I tuned in as Roland was asking Rep Meek, what he thought of the fact the many Dem leader in his state, and in the national party, are directly, or indirectly by their silence endorsing the candidacy of REPULICAN turned Independent Charlie Crist for Senate. Now I’ll admit, that I didn’t get to hear Rep Meek’s answer (I was on my way to work, and didn’t want to clock in late), but it got me to thinking…
Texas Dem
You mean like this?
This is tricky.
They make it look so easy, don’t they?
I got a question for you, Clinton.
You don’t mind if I call you Clinton, do you?
I feel like I know you so well.
The way we have it, on the night of the murders…
…you made a short speech as the bulldozer buried the kids in the dam.
How does Lester tell it?
“Mississippi will be proud of you.
You’ve struck a blow for the white man.”
Is that what you said, Clinton? Hm?
Is that what you said?
It must’ve been you…
…because Clayton Townley and
Ray Stuckey were too smart to be there.
And you was too stupid to think anybody’d remember what you said.
But old Lester, he got a good memory.
I’m sorry.
I haven’t done this for a long time.
Did you make a speech the night that
you beat up your wife, Clinton? Huh?
Did ya?
Did you strike a blow for the white man that night?
You got a stupid smile.
You know that, Pell? Can you see it? Huh? Good!
Did you smile when the bulldozer ran over the black kid’s body? Did ya?!
Did you smile when the bodies were covered over? Did ya?!
Get up here. Come on. Get up!
Did you smile that same stupid smile, huh?!
Did ya?! You…
Did ya smile, Pell? Did ya smile?!
Huh?! Did ya?!
Make no mistake about it, Deputy.
I’ll cut your fuckin’ head off and not give a shit how it reads in the report sheet.
It doesn’t get any better than that…….
lamh32
Okay, I get it that Marc Rubio in the Senate is not gonna be a good thing, but why after the liberal freak-out that the Arlen Spector/Joe Sestak debacle, where people were outright in mutiny over the Obama admin’s “courtship” of Arlen Spector, Republican turned Democrat over “the real Democrat” Joes Sestak why is so acceptable in many of the left blogosphere (Kos esp., Kos was essentially begging Crist to become a Dem and has more times than not openly “courted” Crist possible turn on the front pages of DKOS) to completely ignore and in some cases openly encourage the Meek campaign to not split votes between Crist and Meeks, and therefore “ensuring” a Rubio win. IMHO, I think it the height of hypocrisy.
Now, I’m not and really never was an Arlen Spector fan, but like the case in FL, I’m also not a PA voter, so my opinion on that didn’t really matter either, but wasn’t one of the questions with ARlen’s “conversion” whether are not Arlen could be trusted after re-election to stay a Dem, or to vote with the Dems after he got what he wanted. Well someone needs to tell me how is Crist complete laying down of his truly felt Conserv/Repub principles just to get elected to the Senate, is any different than Arles’ “conversion” to save his “re-election bid”? Also, someone may want to tell me, just as with Arlen, what is it that makes Dems think that Crist will caucus with the Dems if elected. Crist can’t even bring himself to say whether or not he will caucus with Dems, even though his path to victory now lies in the hands of getting Dems in FL to vote for him. And what does it say about someone who can so easily, throw the beliefs they’ve held forever so quickly “under the bus” just to win an election. ..
lamh32
Now, I know that the argument against Meek is that he can’t beat Rubio, and they may be true (though, I contend, that if Crist was out, then Dems would coalesce around Meek, and the fight between Rubio and Meek may have been a fight for the middle and the minority vote…), but that doesn’t make it right the lack of support for Kendrick Meek in the activist blogosphere. Isn’t the whole idea to elect “real” Democrats, why haven’t I seen any “real Dem” post or diaries or whatnot or “money bombs” for Kendrick Meek over at DKOS and such. All I saw was Sestak and Bill Halter money bombs and support diaries. Besides, so what, if Meek may or may not beat Rubio, does that mean that the Meek’s candidacy deserves to damn near be outright ignored by the esteemed activist left? I sure don’t’ recall there being much a chance of victory for that dude from MN who was going against Michele Bachmann in ’08, dude raised what…nearly $500,000 just from Bachmann’s dumb ass comment on Hardball during the election season, and no one other than Minnesotans knew who dude was, yet he raised 1/2 a million for what…certainly not because he had any chance of truly beating Michele Bachmann. It was just the principle of the matter. Shouldn’t the same principle apply to Rep Meek?
Like I said though, I’m not a voter in FL, so my opinion doesn’t amount to a hill of beans, but damn if it doesn’t just piss me off. What’s the point of having a mission statement of “electing better more progressive Democrats, when what you really mean, is “electing better Dems, unless the real/better Dem may not have a chance of winning”? It’s just funny, that the thought of the Obama admin making the same calculation, cause a cataclysmic war in the blogosphere.
I know this rant probably makes no sense, but still, I just had to get it off my chest, and BJ always seems like a good place to rant…lol!

lamh32: People were very nice to Specter back when he was a “moderate Republican” who might or might not vote with us. I expect that if Jim DeMint sent out feelers about possibly becoming a Democrat, people would be nice to him too. At that point, the question is: Will Republican X become a Democrat? Of course Democrats want the answer to be “yes”.
Personally, I thought Obama had to back Specter. He had said he would back when he really needed Specter’s help, and it would be both wrong and dumb to renege. (Dumb because if another Republican wanted to come over, Obama would have no credibility.)
For the rest of us, who had made no such promises, the choice was: Sestak, a real Democrat, or Specter, an opportunist? Easy choice, especially since both seemed equally likely to win. That’s not necessarily true in FL. In FL, if you think Meek won’t win but Crist might, your best outcome is Crist winning and caucusing with Democrats.
Emily L. Hauser/ellaesther
@debbie: It occurs to me that I’ve never watched it so much as once. This weekend would be a good time to do so, I think.

@hilzoy: I have to ask, finally, after often wondering:
You’re hilzoy, hilzoy right? The real hilzoy? Obsidian Wings?
lamh32
@hilzoy:
I hear ya, but what is the point of supporting “real” Dems in states they trend Republican then. FL trends GOP right, so any Dem may have an uphill battle right? What then is the rationale for supporting Dems in states like Texas, or Missours, or Minnesota, or Louisiana, or Arizona, or any of the other states Red states? Wasn’t that the point of the 50 state strategy supporting and attempting to elect Dems even in states where the Dem seems to have no chance. Isn’t that a waste of resources?
morzer
@lamh32:
Florida was trending towards the Democrats in terms of party registration not so long ago. Trends aren’t set in stone – which is why they are trends, and why you need to put up candidates and keep the flame burning, even in Darkest Boehneria.

With poll numbers like that, can we stop with the “Obama is leading us straight to hell” lamentations? Or at least slow down a bit?
lamh32
@hilzoy:
Also, I just don’t trust any pol who can so easily give up the “ideals and principles” they seemed to so strongly hold just to win an election. That’s ambition, not some altruistic need to “help your electorate”.
And tell me, what makes what Crist has done less opportunistics than what Spector or Libermann before him has done?
What makes Crist more trustworthy, even though his actions are just as opportunistic?
All I’ll say, is I’m serously hoping that lib supporters of Crist is correct and Crist does caucus with Dems, but if/when he doesn’t I’ll be sure remember these coversations.
Besides, it doesn’t matter how much rhetoric they spout right? It whether they vote yea/nay. Now if Crist truly held those past beliefs, and governed according to them, and how does his essentially, backtracking from those long held same beliefs not make him even more untrustworthy

Omnes Omnibus

@lamh32:
Fail. Go look at our Senators and congressional delegation.
One of the reasons for supporting them is that you very rarely have a situation like Crist, i.e. someone who is very popular in the state and could easily win, who might or might not be a reliable vote for your party, in a situation where no one who is actually of your party can get elected.
And if you think Kendrick Meek would have any possibility of finishing within 10 points of Rubio in a heads up match-up, you’re crazy. Just nuts. That’s probably why the black minority leader of the state legislature officially backed Crist today.
Kendrick Meek has zero chance of becoming the senator from Florida. None. Nada. Zip. The choice is Crist or Rubio.

well what next? Can Crist win with Meek in the race? No. Doesn’t look like Meek plans to drop out and I don’t think he should have to.
BTW, I’m assuming that the FL African Am electorate isn’t really needed to win in this election FL. Cause Meek will have AA Dem voters, as evidenced by the large AA vote in the Dem primary, and if Meek is somehow seen to have been “bullied” out, it won’t surprise me in the least, to see no real AA turnout. But I guess since AA voters never statistically seem to vote in large contigents(sp?) during these mid-term elections, Crist feels he won’t need them (Rubio ain’t gonna get them). Meek may not have support in the “majority” liberal party, but he does has big support in the national AA media & blogs which is can be a major asset factor in Dem elections right?
All I’m saying is that the TJMS reaches alot of voters, and even though this is a FL voter decision, the treatment of Meeks will be national news.

Like I said, if Meek doesn’t drop out, will Crist still win? From the conversations i’ve had about this, I can guess I should just get ready to read and hear alot of blaming of Meek for a Crist loss, and Rubio win.
BTW, how does one get Meek out? If Meek is offered a position in the WH, then I expect to hear the same noise I heard when Sestak was supposedly offered a position in the WH.
We are obviously not gonna agree on this. I still think it’s wrong, and will have repercussions in the African American community nationwide if Meek is seen to have been forced out in anyway.
Are there any states with Senate races in 2012? Maybe Meek should move to one of those states, with Obama on the ballot, he may actually have a chance.
morzer
@lamh32:
I don’t think the African-American community is quite so unrealistic as you suggest. They know that in politics you sometimes have to back the best horse, regardless of other considerations. Why is it “wrong” to do so? And why assume Meek wouldn’t voluntarily quit for the greater good?

@Stooleo:
yes, it is. Thx for the link.
Take THAT, “we’re fucked”ers….!

@Anne Laurie: Well, I used a Splenda analog, but yeah.

@lamh32:
He might; he might not. The difference as that Crist might win if Meek drops out. Meek won’t win if Crist drops out. That’s really what you are going to have to deal with. It’s Crist or Rubio. There’s no scenario I can see that ends up with Senator Kendrick Meek outside of both of his opponents getting hit by asteroids.
Not from me, you won’t. I won’t blame Meek for anything he does at this point, because he’s been screwed. I don’t think he’s been screwed by anyone in particular, just that the universe apparently hates him.
It’s the people who go ahead and vote for Meek without understanding what they’re doing that I’ll blame. If you support Meek, you are helping to elect Marco Rubio. End of story. If you understand that and vote for him anyway, I can agree to disagree, and do so fairly politely. It’s the people who won’t acknowledge the obvious consequences of their actions that I’ll blame.
So what? It was a bullshit charge when made about Sestak, and it would be a bullshit charge when made about Meek. I find it amusing that people who get so fired up insisting that we have to stand up to the teabagging nonsense are all of a sudden going weak kneed at the thought of offending the teabaggers. This charge amounts to just about nothing, both legally and politically.
Again, as long as they take this position with the full knowledge that they are helping Rubio, fine. If they are deluding themselves about it, I don’t have much sympathy.

I got an Xbox because I was tired of buying PC games that I couldn’t run. I have a really good computer and bought Mafia II for the PC and it doesn’t draw very well (that, and the game isn’t a lot of fun, but that’s another story). At least you don’t have to worry about that with Xbox games.

@morzer, et al:
I guess we can just agree to disagree on this.

@lamh32:
Were I Obama, Meek would already have gotten that offer, because the Wingnut Welfare Wurlitzer is gonna bitch regardless. Although not having a Democrat contesting in FL, however futilely, might be considered bad optics?

(And: thanks. ;) )
lamh32: I thought you were asking why people are nicer to Crist than they were to Specter, to which I think the answer is: because he hasn’t switched yet. (And, in Obama’s case: because he gave his word.) — Personally, I support Democrats in races I think they can win, and sometimes Democrats I just think ought to win. (Support in the sense of giving money to, working for, etc., as opposed to just idly thinking nice thoughts about.) I hope Crist does decide to caucus with the Democrats if he wins, but I’m not sending him money on the off chance that he will.
morzer
@lamh32:
The problem is, I am not sure what you actually advocate in this situation. As far as I can see, you want Meek to continue onwards in a hopeless campaign that might put Rubio in the Senate, while hinting darkly about what African Americans will think about it all if he drops out for whatever reason. What precisely do you want everyone to do?
lamh32
@hilzoy:
I appreciate the tenor of your responses hilzoy.
BTW, we agree on this:

@morzer:
It looks as if we are both set in our opinions. It’s obvious that I’m not gonna change your, and you are not gonna change mine.
No point in circling each other all night.
Thx for the discussion.
BTW, I don’t expect anyone to do anything. And I’ll keep my dark hints about the Afr Am communities response to things. I sometimes forget, that what is seen as VIP to the Afr Am is not always as important to the majority.
morzer
@lamh32:
What discussion was that?
morzer
@lamh32:
Right, so we’ve finally got to what you’ve been hinting at: if Kendrick Meek is asked to step aside, this will just be evidence of racism, rather than commonsense politics.
I can certainly see why you didn’t want to be open about that particular opinion.
Mnemosyne
@morzer:
I think that lamh32 is saying that if Meeks is asked to step down, African-American voters in Florida will see it as evidence of racism, and that’s a block of voters that Democrats can’t afford to alienate. Especially not in an election season where Democrats aren’t enthused about voting in the first place.
I’m pretty sure that telling AA voters in Florida, “Well, it’s not racist this time” isn’t going to be very comforting. The Democratic powers-that-be are going to need to do something to fix that perception before the election, and the sooner, the better.
morzer
@Mnemosyne:
Except that the ONLY person to bring race into this so far has been lamh. FFS the senior Florida Senate Democrat, who is African American, has just backed Crist!
Mnemosyne
@morzer:
lamh is reporting what s/he is hearing from his/her AA relatives in Florida being disgruntled about how Meeks is being treated. Don’t shoot the messenger.
morzer
@Mnemosyne:
Lamh says that, sure. What does that mean? Nothing. So one small group wants to make it about race, rather than reality. the polls say Meek is toast. They’ve said that for months now, and if senior African American Democrats are endorsing Crist, it’s mighty hard to find any coherent reason to claim that this is white people sticking it to an African American because of race. I am just sick of trying to debate people who won’t say what they really think, and weasel out of it when you ask them to say what they think should be done, and then try and make it a racial issue for the final cherry on this particular sundae.
Mnemosyne
@morzer:
If that “one small group” doesn’t turn out for Crist because they feel like their guy was forced out, Crist is toast and Rubio wins. Still want to argue that their opinion doesn’t matter?

@lamh32: I just want to back JMN and say that Minnesota is not a red state at all. We are a blue state that has Dems who always split their fucking votes (third party gets 5% – 8% of the vote every election) so we end up with Pawlenty being elected twice with less than fifty percent of the vote. As for Michele Bachmann, her district is weird.
I am not arguing against your bigger point, but I wanted to make this clear.
