Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

It may be funny to you motherfucker, but it’s not funny to me.

People are complicated. Love is not.

Republicans in disarray!

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

Just because you believe it, that doesn’t make it true.

And we’re all out of bubblegum.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

We’ve had enough carrots to last a lifetime. break out the sticks.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Technically true, but collectively nonsense

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Motto for the House: Flip 5 and lose none.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

It’s time for the GOP to dust off that post-2012 autopsy, completely ignore it, and light the party on fire again.

So SNL will be premiering soon, but it got me to thinking that while SNL is still going fairly strong, I miss MADTV just a little.

when they were on, they were on!

One of my fav skits were the “Lowered Expectations” skits.

I’m reposting this because it’s pretty cool. It got caught in the moderation filter in the last thread and it appears to still be there. From the White House, with minor edits to keep it out of the spam filter (FYWP)
With regards to SSG Salvatore Giunta, the first living recipient of the Medal of Honor since the Viet Nam war. President Obama will award the medal on behalf of Congress at a date to be determined:

Then-E4 Salvatore A. Giunta distinguished himself by acts of gallantry at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a rifle team leader with Company B, 2d Battalion (Airborne), 503d Infantry Regiment during combat operations against an armed enemy in the Korengal Valley, Afghanistan on October 25, 2007.
When an insurgent force ambush split SPC Giunta’s squad into two groups, he exposed himself to enemy fire to pull a comrade back to cover. Later, while engaging the enemy and attempting to link up with the rest of his squad, SPC Giunta noticed two insurgents carrying away a fellow soldier. He immediately engaged the enemy, killing one and wounding the other, and provided medical aid to his wounded comrade while the rest of his squad caught up and provided security. His courage and leadership while under extreme enemy fire were integral to his platoon’s ability defeat an enemy ambush and recover a fellow American paratrooper from enemy hands.

Out of pure, and doubtless misplaced, curiosity, has anyone seen matoko_chan? Was she banned? Did she discover that she was memetically programmed to evolve her own annihilation?

@morzer: I believe matoko_chan is an observant Muslim, probably celebrating Eid al Fitr. Eid mubarak, matoko_chan!

Or she might have been banned.

@SiubhanDuinne: She has claimed to be female so your engendering is accurate. Well, as accurate as it can be on the Internet.

As far as not blogging on Ramadan, Amir-Khalid is also a Muslim (from Indonesia) and he was still posting this month. Maybe she just burnt herself out.

For those of you who are fans of Irish music, Danu has a new record out (not yet released in the US, but you can buy it from the band’s website and get it shipped from Ireland in about a week). It’s called “Seanchas,” and it’s quite good.

So I’m about to go try and write down a recipe from something I’ve thrown together all my life and was taught to make rather than shown a recipe card to follow. Wish me luck, and if I disappear from this venture, to soonergrunt, TAKE YOUR DAMN PAIN MEDS!!

    @Yutsano:

Orange Madeira Cake with citrus icing (Apologies if recipe is strident – I’m buzzed on tea.)

    2 2/3 cup sugar
350 grams (cup and a half) of butter
    Rind of one orange
    8 eggs
    1/2 cup milk
    2 cups of plain flour
    2 teaspoons of baking powder
    A good pinch of salt

Oven – 350 F (180C). You also need a well buttered cake tin, which has then had the inside of the tin covered with baking paper.

Sift your flour, salt and baking powder into a bowl.

In another bowl, beat the butter and the sugar until very creamy. I just bung it in the mixmaster and turn it up. By hand, mix in the orange rind quite well to spread the flavour, then the eggs and the milk. Pour the lot into the flour and mix in gently by hand.

Pour into the tin and cook for about an hour, then test to see how cooked – it will probably need another 10 to 20 minutes in the oven at that stage. Cool in the tin.

    Icing

2 cups icing sugar (what the hell do you lot call it? Confectioner’s sugar?)
Juice of a big lemon, or two limes, or an orange (depending on taste), plus a bit (or a lot) of very finely grated rind.

Icing sugar in bowl, throw in the rind, and then dribble tiny bits of juice in while whisking heartily. When seems to hit a texture you like, stop dribbling and whisking, wait about ten seconds and then re stir to check the texture, then recommence or cease dribbling and whisking as appropriate. When it’s done pour generously over cake.

    Nom. Can’t fail.

@morzer: Her posts were always entertaining except for the racial inferiority of wingnuts thing. There are some thoughts that should not be shared in public.

The GOP senate primary in Delaware is getting crazier by the minute. First we had the NRA endorsing O’Donnell and now it’s Senator DeMintia going all out for her. Are there any Republican women who don’t fit the sexist stereotype of a shrieking, chemically imbalanced virago?

Is that snark? Because about every university in the country has an “old main,” and “we are” came about because of some incident involving their football team and an airplane crash that you might have heard of.

if it’s snark, accept my apologies.

understand the plane crash sentiment and if that gives them a license to make a derivative chant out of the we are penn state chant into their own we are marshall chant then fine. i won’t object. but penn state has the chant since the 50s i believe. was marshall even a school then? if penn state stole it from some other team my apologizes but i am only aware of penn state and marshall doing this chant.

i guess old main is a typical generic college bldg name but it is striking that old main and we are are the two iconic psu things and marshall has them both. does marshall have sticky buns too?

    @Tattoosydney:
    Latkes

(note to the Jewish denziens of BJ: yes this is not a traditional latke recipe. No I don’t care if it is or not. My great-grandmother was the only Jewish woman for miles in Saskatchewan and then Idaho, so she did with what she could get.)

1 medium starchy potato (Yukon gold or Idaho will do)
    1/2 onion
    1 egg
    1/2 cup flour
    Salt and pepper to taste

Grate potato and onion on a box grater into mixing bowl. Add in egg and mix with hand, then add in flour a bit at a time until paste is formed. You may need more or less depending on weather, moisture of egg, sense of humor of FSM that day, whatever. Heat up skillet filled with 1/4 inch (1/2 cm) of oil. Dollop out cakes to whatever serving size you wish, this amount will make four small ones, two larger ones, or feed one gigantor to a pig like me. Cook on one side 10 minutes or until edges of cakes get deep golden brown. Turn and cook on other side five more minutes. Drain on paper towels and season both sides liberally with salt and pepper. Delicious served with applesauce or sour cream. Also an excellent accompaniment for braised bratwurst.

Ah, the grand American tradition of moving to a new country and making do with what you could get there. That’s how the Irish started eating corned beef and cabbage and the Chinese invented chop suey once they got here.

That’s what makes American cuisine great — people trying to make the dishes they remember from the old country with the ingredients they can find in the US.

There’s a theory that male wingnuts who don’t have money or ‘influence’ to make up for their severe shortcomings in other areas hope that Publicly Crazy women will be more… approachable. You know, like Rich Lowrey getting “starbursts” when he thought Palin winked at him over the teevee.
