Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When your entire life is steeped in white supremacy, equality feels like discrimination.

If you’re pissed about Biden’s speech, he was talking about you.

Don’t expect peaches from an apple tree.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

Today’s GOP: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

He really is that stupid.

Nancy smash is sick of your bullshit.

They traffic in fear. it is their only currency. if we are fearful, they are winning.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

I like you, you’re my kind of trouble.

DeSantis transforms Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

The words do not have to be perfect.

Consistently wrong since 2002

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

A consequence of cucumbers

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

This really is a full service blog.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Take your GOP plan out of the witness protection program.

If you want to see a great running back, keep an eye on South Carolina’s Marcus Lattimore. That kid is a freshman Emmit Smith.

Which sucks, cuz I’m a Clemson fan.

I was much more impressed (and posted in an earlier thread) about JMU (of the 1AA JMU’s) beating “ranked” VaTech.

Va Tech, for whatever reason, is always overrated. I wish they would just stop doing those stupid fucking preseason polls.

Nevertheless, because Va Tech is in the ACC, they will likely be in a semi-big bowl even if they don’t end well, because they have a bunch of fans who “travel well.”

Not sure. They have in the past had a pretty weak conference division and escape relatively unscathed.

I should say VT is not that different from most any big-time football school, fan-wise. But they do seem to get pushed up in the rankings to absurdly high levels based on what I don’t know.

It’s not like there isn’t a great facility just waiting for them to sweep in and renovate. More than likely it’s about money: King County sold their souls to keep the Seahawks and the Mariners which was part of the motivation to tell Bennett to suck an egg when he wanted Key Arena redone to keep the Supersonics in town. No one is gonna sponsor another stadium renovation here for a hella long time.

@Andy K: That wasn’t an inaccurate assessment. When Bennett bought the team he wanted to move them right away and the city fought back saying that he couldn’t just break the lease on Key Arena. He countered with he would only stay if they agreed to a ridiculous renovation cost that the city would have to pay the vast majority of. The court sided with Bennett but said the city had the rights to the franchise name. Which is why they are now the OKC Whatevers. (I’m not being snarky there, I honestly don’t remember their name and I refuse to Google it. The situation was bad blood the whole way around.)

It’s not like there isn’t a great facility just waiting for them to sweep in and renovate.

Actually, it’s exactly like there isn’t a great facility just waiting for an NHL team to sweep in and renovate. Key Arena only seats 10,000 for hockey; the rest of the seats are all obstructed view. The renovation necessary to make it a facility the NHL would be interested in would be more expensive than the one that wasn’t done for the Supersonics.

Gopher fan here. Fortunately, I’m used to losing to Div IAA, or whatever they’re calling them now, teams. We’ve done it three times in the last eight years. Hockey starts next month.

I’d say that was true if Milwaukee hadn’t fallen in love with that team so quickly and passionately, but I think it’ll take a few generations dying off before they let it go. There was no reason for the Braves to leave- the stadium was relatively new, the fans filled it until the last year, after the new ownership (Chicagoans, iirc) announced they were moving to Atlanta the next year…Do you know what F.I.P. stands for, and why the people in Wisconsin use it?

While y’all were gearing up to watch football, there was a bit of a changing of the guard in basketball today. The first game this season was in Oregon… and the Lobos lost 72-0. It was 59-0 at halftime.

The Lobos are losing 38-17 to Texas Tech at home and we are happy about that. With TCU, BYU and Utah left on the conference schedule… it is going to be a long, long year for the Lobos.
