If you want to see a great running back, keep an eye on South Carolina’s Marcus Lattimore. That kid is a freshman Emmit Smith.
Which sucks, cuz I’m a Clemson fan.

Speaking of football, John, does Rosie the piglet have her own Stillers collar for tomorrow?

Liberal Sandlapper
@stockinged: yeah, I saw the whole thing. I’ve been watching him for a couple of years at Byrnes High in the Upstate. That kid is going to be the best running back USC has ever had, including George Rogers. And that’s sayin’ something!
jharp
I sure enjoyed Ohio State.

@fucen tarmal: Holy smokes I thought it was a night game, thanks for the heads up!

Yup. That was fun. OSU has some work to do, though.

And Lattimore? He be a stud. I see another Heisman winner from Carolina sometime in the next couple of years. That was pretty to watch.

Va Tech, for whatever reason, is always overrated. I wish they would just stop doing those stupid fucking preseason polls.
Nevertheless, because Va Tech is in the ACC, they will likely be in a semi-big bowl even if they don’t end well, because they have a bunch of fans who “travel well.”

Not sure. They have in the past had a pretty weak conference division and escape relatively unscathed.
I should say VT is not that different from most any big-time football school, fan-wise. But they do seem to get pushed up in the rankings to absurdly high levels based on what I don’t know.

Lattimore was fantastic today. Had 58 of the Gamecocks 59 yds on that last drive late in the game. A true freshman carrying the team. Wow! Go SoCarolina….

OT, but I was just on TPM and they have a photo from the protests going on in NYC today (on the front page)… and this woman is wearing a tshirt that caught my eye. It says “Waterboarding Instructor”. Is this some kind of wingnut thing I haven’t been aware of until now? Are these people PROUD of wearing shirts that (in my view) glorify and, if I may say so, even encourage torture?
Or am I just misinterpreting the message of the shirt?

Never mind the fact that we hit constant attendance goals for all three of our major sports franchises (football, baseball, and sociaIist football) and the traffic gets snarled for miles when one of the teams is playing. Fortunately there will never be a trifecta sports day, the Sounders play in Seahawks Stadium as well. Ignore the haters.

Seattle is a great sports town, and it’s been screwed out of two franchises. The fans turn out when the teams are mediocre or sucky. Why you don’t have an NHL franchise- other than the Canucks not loving the idea so much- I’ll never know.

@Andy K: I first heard they were considering upgrading the T-birds when I was a junior in college. That was 1997 or so. It’s not like there isn’t a great facility just waiting for them to sweep in and renovate. More than likely it’s about money: King County sold their souls to keep the Seahawks and the Mariners which was part of the motivation to tell Bennett to suck an egg when he wanted Key Arena redone to keep the Supersonics in town. No one is gonna sponsor another stadium renovation here for a hella long time.

@Yutsano:
From what I heard from my friends in Seattle is that once the Sonics were sold, they were assured to move to OKC.
As for an NHL franchise…I can understand why there won’t be a team coming there any time soon, but I can’t figure why you didn’t get a franchise in the late 60s/early 70s, when the league originally expanded.

Yutsano
@Andy K: That wasn’t an inaccurate assessment. When Bennett bought the team he wanted to move them right away and the city fought back saying that he couldn’t just break the lease on Key Arena. He countered with he would only stay if they agreed to a ridiculous renovation cost that the city would have to pay the vast majority of. The court sided with Bennett but said the city had the rights to the franchise name. Which is why they are now the OKC Whatevers. (I’m not being snarky there, I honestly don’t remember their name and I refuse to Google it. The situation was bad blood the whole way around.)

@Yutsano:
Actually, it’s exactly like there isn’t a great facility just waiting for an NHL team to sweep in and renovate. Key Arena only seats 10,000 for hockey; the rest of the seats are all obstructed view. The renovation necessary to make it a facility the NHL would be interested in would be more expensive than the one that wasn’t done for the Supersonics.

@stuckinred: Dakota State was the team they played. The Trojans are an NAIA team with little football tradition. They were so bad back in my day, I played against them a couple of times.

Tell a Cubs fan to get a life because 1969 was 41 years ago and she’ll pop you but good.

Reserve your “greatest run of the day” until you see this 75 yarder by James from Oregon, wow!
Andy K
@stuckinred:
I’d say that was true if Milwaukee hadn’t fallen in love with that team so quickly and passionately, but I think it’ll take a few generations dying off before they let it go. There was no reason for the Braves to leave- the stadium was relatively new, the fans filled it until the last year, after the new ownership (Chicagoans, iirc) announced they were moving to Atlanta the next year…Do you know what F.I.P. stands for, and why the people in Wisconsin use it?
Bill Murray
@That’s Master of Accountancy to You, Pal (JMN): well they are certainly no Central Florida
stuckinred
@Andy K: No, haven’t heard of that. My great county stadium story is, when I was about 5, we went for a night game and went to the zoo during the afternoon. Sometime late in the day we heard the game on the radio! It was a day game and we rushed there just in time for the last inning. My old man was coaching at Wauwatosa at the time.

While y’all were gearing up to watch football, there was a bit of a changing of the guard in basketball today. After watching Kevin Durant lay 38 on Lithuania in the semifinals of the world championships, I’d say there is a sound basis to assert that he–not LeBron and not Kobe–is the best player in the world.

James Madison 21, Virginia Tech 16.

Before anyone complains (except for Virginia Tech fans) can’t match the frustration that UNM (New Mexico) fan have this year.
The first game this season was in Oregon… and the Lobos lost 72-0. It was 59-0 at halftime.
The Lobos are losing 38-17 to Texas Tech at home and we are happy about that. With TCU, BYU and Utah left on the conference schedule… it is going to be a long, long year for the Lobos.
